NewYorkSpider's Stanley Cup Final Prediction(made this back in September). Prediction (http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=12860695&postcount=247)
Playoff Pool
When doing your picks PM me. Just first round only.
I'll need winners of each game, how many games it takes and the winner of each series.
Ex. Anaheim in 6. 1.) Ducks 2.) Ducks 3.) Stars 4.) Stars 5.) Ducks 6.) Ducks
Points System (Gonna try to explain this the best I can.)
2 points for picking each individual win.
4 points for picking the correct series. (So if you get two games wrong, but still pick the correct winner in the number of games you predicted, I'll still give you 4 points.)
6 points for picking everything correctly. (Meaning each game picked right and the correct winner of the series.)

I was going to send a PM, but I might as well make my stupidity public...
Do you just want the first round picks as mentioned above (who wins in how many games and mention which games they won), or do you want picks from the first round all the way to the Finals?

The Flyers/Caps should be an interesting series. Both teams are hot going in. Yeah, The Caps have Ovechkin and Huet is playing great. But I see the Flyers veteran leadership and physical play prevailing. And Biron has been playing great too. I see them winning this series in 6.
here is my take on the caps.
in the last 17 games they played a total of 3 playoff teams (4 games) and lost 2 of those games. over this 7 game streak to end the season they beat up on a combination of the panthers twice, lightning twice, hurricanes twice and the thrashers, not really the streak the flyers had against teams battling to win their divisions. i am not going to take anything away from this team, they won when they had to, but i feel like they have not REALLY been tested since the 19th of march in a loss to the blackhawks.

Tonight is the night we find out which team gets the opportunity to draft highly sought-after prospect Steven Stamkos.
Versus, TSN and TSN.ca will have live coverage of the NHL Draft Lottery tonight at 8pm et/5pm pt.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have a 25% chance of winning the lottery and almost a 50/50 shot at drafting first overall. The Los Angeles Kings have the second best chance in the lottery at 18.8%, followed by Atlanta (14.2%), St. Louis (10.7%) and the New York Islanders (8.1%).
These five teams are the only ones with a chance of winning the lottery and making the first selection. Should any of the other nine teams have luck on their side, they would only be able to move up four spots.
Stamkos is currently leading his Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs. He has scored 11 goals in seven games thus far as the Sting battle the Kitchener Rangers in the second round.
In the regular season, the Unionville, Ontario native scored 58 goals and added 47 assists for 105 points, good enough for fifth in league scoring. He also played a big role in Team Canada's gold-medal performance at the World Junior Hockey Championship.
Last season, Stamkos scored 42 goals and added 50 assists for 92 points with the Sting in his rookie campaign.
The Lightning could certainly use the services of Stamkos to play behind Vincent Lecavalier since centre Brad Richards was dealt to the Dallas Stars at the trade deadline. Richards struggled to find wingers with chemistry so more help may be needed.
Should the Kings win the lottery, Stamkos would join a franchise on the upswing. Despite a tough year, the Kings boast some young talent at centre with Anze Kopitar, Michael Cammalleri and Patrick O'Sullivan. If the Kings are happy with their stable of centres, they could entertain a deal to move down and take one of the solid defencemen available.
It would be a dream come true for Thrashers' GM and head coach Don Waddell if he could step up to the podium in June and announce Stamkos' name. Atlanta has some good young talent but there is an immediate need down the middle. This season, Eric Perrin led all centres in scoring with 12 goals and 45 points. Bryan Little is a rising star and Stamkos would solidify the position for years to come.
The Blues seem to be on the right track but top centres Keith Tkachuk and Andy McDonald are not getting any younger. The transition to the NHL would be made much easier for Stamkos if his wingers were 43-goal man Brad Boyes and Paul Kariya.
The Islanders need scoring and Stamkos could fill the void. Centre Mike Comrie led the team in scoring this season with just 21 goals and 49 points. Bill Guerin led the team in goals with 23.
Other propects expected to be drafted early in June include OHL standout defencemen Drew Doughty of the Guelph Storm, Alex Pietrangelo of the Niagara IceDogs and Zach Bogosian of the Peterborough Petes.

Lord Stanley's cup is San Jose's to lose. They've got the talent, but do they have the will?
that depends on their big name players putting up big name numbers, which they havent in the past. marleau and thornton have not had standout performances in the post-season and that, imo, has been their demise in the past.
but i think this year will be different. San Jose will win the Cup, but their biggest test will be when and if they meet Anaheim. If its not the Sharks, its the Ducks.

this year is a very deep draft.
im hoping LA gets the 1st pick, because with O'Sullivan, Cammalleri, Kopitar and Brown they dont really need another prospect forward and would be more inclined to trade down as their is a wealth of blueliners in this draft.
any other team that gets the #1 pick is probably gonna take Stamkos, he is just too good of a talent to pass up.
another pick to watch out for is Nikita Filatov. yes, he is russian, which may see him drop in the draft but he definitely has the talent to be a top 10, possibly top 5 pick. kyle beach and mikkel boedker are also top flight talents.
will be a good draft this year.

Tampa got the first pick. Almost four years (three seasons) after winning the Stanley Cup they wind up as the worst team in the league.
LA finished second. The Toronto media will have plenty of speculation and rumours that TO will try and trade up to the 2nd pick this year since the team even sucks at rebuilding.

But I read this
Locally, Comcast SportsNet has announced that it will carry Games 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7 - all of the games not on NBC. As for Versus, it will be blacked out in the Philadelphia area.
So the local station would carry and game not on VS or NBC,

Look at thier regular season meetings. I believe the Wild beat the Avs at Colorado once. Other than that, the home team one every contest. It doesn't guarantee anything in the playoffs, but thats how I'm approaching the series.

Jason Reitman, Adam Beach to blog during NHL playoffs
Last Updated: Wednesday, April 9, 2008 | 3:36 PM ET
Canadian director Jason Reitman and actors Adam Beach and Thomas Cavanagh are among the celebrities who will blog about hockey during this year's playoffs.
The National Hockey League has lined up more than a dozen celebrity fans to write about their favourite team or their love of hockey on the NHL website.
Jason Reitman, shown at the Academy Awards on Feb. 24, will blog about hockey for the NHL. Jason Reitman, shown at the Academy Awards on Feb. 24, will blog about hockey for the NHL.
(Kevork Djansezian/Associated Press)
Adam Beach, a Canadian actor who plays the role of Det. Chester Lake on NBC's hit show Law & Order: SVU, will be following the Ottawa Senators in playoff action.
Thomas Cavanagh, the Ottawa-born actor who starred in the comedy Ed, also will be following the Senators, who open the playoffs Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Reitman, who earned an Oscar nomination for his film Juno, is a Canucks fan who was left disappointed when the team failed to make the playoffs.
"So what I decided is that I'm going to write a kind of mythical blog about what the Canucks and [L.A.] Kings would be doing had they still been in," he said.
Reitman, 30, has directed commercials for the NHL and served on its entertainment advisory board.
A native Canadian who grew up in Los Angeles, he said he's followed hockey closely for seven years.
"I'd come to really love the game and I was just a little upset because I felt there was more of an opportunity for particularly Americans to know about the game and follow the game," he said.
The bloggers are meant to be "irreverent and candid" about their team and their love for hockey, said NHL spokeswoman Bernadette Mansur.
This is the second year the NHL has recruited TV, music and film stars to blog during the playoffs.
Other celebrity bloggers for 2008:
* Rob Mariano, a reality TV star from Survivor, following the Boston Bruins.
* Kevin Smith, director of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, following the New Jersey Devils.
* David Boreanz, star of Bones, following the Philadelphia Flyers.
* Syd Butler, bassist for Les Savy Fav, following the Washington Capitals.
* Dierks Bentley, country singer, following the Nashville Predators.
* Thorsten Kaye, of soap All My Children, following the Detroit Red Wings.

I picked the Flyers though they won't survive with Hatcher on the ice or the refs. Ovechkin will be doing triple axels around him....(and the whole team probably anyway). For once the past two games, they (Flyers) actually played like a team/good. But it'd be nice if they won the round. I'd like to work past this month.
I always have good faith in the good ol' Wings but I can't decide on my fave for the East in the finals.

I AM SO FRUSTRATED!
Finally, the NHL playoffs begin and... I don't have OLN anymore. DAMN! No games on ESPN or NBC either, DOUBLE DAMN!
At least I have good 'ole CBC, they'll have a game or two almost every night during the opening round. Just won't be able to flip from game to game this year I guess. Unless... does anyone know if their will be any games broadcast on the internet?

Hatcher is actually out until Sunday i believe, i agree he'll struggle with the speed of The Caps but his veteran presence and physicality is a MUST have if the Flyers want to win this series. They will need both Hatcher and Smith back healthy by the end of the series if they want to win.

I'm still shocked that a lot of people aren't giving the Flyers a chance. Yeah, the Caps have Ovechkin, Huet, and that one good defensmen. Federov too, but he's not the same player. Last time I checked the Flyers have 7 guys with 20+ goals, the second best powerplay in the league, and a physical game that can win them games. Plus, the Capitals played 4 games against teams that were playoff teams since March 10. yeah, they won the games, but I don't they were tested. The Flyers had to play teams like the Devils, Penguins, and Rangers down the stretch. Yes, I'm a Flyers fan, yes I want them to win, but I really think they're going to win this series. Flyers in 6.

The Flyers do have 7 guys with 20+ goals and the 2nd best PP in the league, but I am concerned that within the intensity in the playoffs some of the goons on the team will hinder the talent by taking stupid penalties.
I'm not underestimating the Flyers, but the Caps have much better goaltending with Huet and I believe that being in his first playoffs, Ovechkin will be revved up.
I don't blame you for wanting your team to win, but looking at the Caps as just the team with "Ovechkin, Huet, and that one good defensmen" is looking at them with Orange colored glasses. At least in my hope for the Stars to win, I look at Anaheim as the cheapshotting, dirty players they are, haha. :oldrazz:
I would say good luck, but I am rooting for Ovechkin.....sorry.

I'm not saying the Caps are a bad team. They just haven't convinced me. Who have they played in the last 20 games to get to this point? They only played 4 games against teams who are in the playoffs and they lost 3 of those games. They haven't been tested. They got no playoff experience, which does play a role, and I think Ovechkin is going to need a lot more help against the Flyers. But I don't if his team can step it up to his level. I'm being realistic, not just saying all this stuff because I'm a Flyers fan. If the Flyers play a smart physical game against these guys, they should have no problem. And look out for Mike Richards. And how many goons do you think the Flyers have? They have one guy and that's Riley Cote. All those suspensions happened in the beginning of the year and they haven't had an incident since November. They've learned their lesson.

I'm so pissed at the Flyers right now. That was their game to lose and of course they lost. After having such an amazing second period, they flat out were terrible in the third. How does that happen? They let the Caps do whatever the hell they wanted int he offensive zone and weren't able to sustain any offensive pressure in that period. Granted the Caps played very good defense in that 3rd period. But man, they fell asleep. And a quick question, because I don't know the rule on it. Should the ref stopped the game when Thoreson was hit with that puck and was obviously showing no sign of being able to continue during that play? I just need someone to clarify it for me.

Ok, the Flyers have a tendency, ok like all the time, let the other team skate all over them. They never play their man and EVERYONE is ALWAYS focused on who has the puck. Wayne Gretzky has said before, "Go to where the puck WILL be, not where it is". Another problem is the sissy passing that becomes so predictable (I didn't notice it last night which was nice).
And according to either Jim Jackson or Coatsey, the ref will only blow the whistle if it's an upper body injury. But it's up to them really if they want to blow it or not whether upper or lower body. And they should have. I was beyond irked and knew the second he hit the ice a goal was going to be scored.
The Caps won with a beautiful assist from the refs.

Also, according to Washington (AP), Thoresen might have to have a testicle removed from blocking the shot in the groin. Once they finally got him back to the locker room, the swelling was so bad, they had to rush him to the hospital.

So are people still on the Capitals bandwagon? The Flyers have pretty much dominated the series, except for one period in game 1. Biron has by far been the best goalie in this series and Huet looks lost out there. The Caps are only getting offense out of Green and the 4th line and Flyers have pretty much kept Ovechkin in check and have limited his shots on goal in all three games. He only has one goal, which was a big one in game 1, but that's it. But Timonen got hurt last night, so who knows what's happening with that. But Hatcher stepped it up tonight and played well for his first game back from a broken leg. The Flyers are doing pretty much what I expect them to do to the Caps and it's working. I don't see them losing this series and they should go up 3-1 after tomorrow night. The Caps are lucky this isn't a 3-0 series lead. Oh yeah, how about Danny Briere? He's got 6 points with 4 goals and 2 assists. He's definitely stepped it up and Prospal is having a great series too.

Wednesday, April 16
12:12 p.m.
After being re-evaluated today, Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen declared himself fit to play on Thursday when the Flyers take on the Capitals in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals (7:00 p.m., Comcast SportsNet).
Timonen left last night's 6-3 win over the Capitals in Game 3 late in the second period and did not return, after suffering an upper body injury when he was pushed into the net by Washington’s Brooks Laich.
"It's not that bad. I'm ready to go tomorrow," said the all-star defenseman.

Yeah, but they didn't because the Flyers absolutely dominated them in that second OT. And yes, they finished close to the standings but the Caps played some poor teams down the stretch and are in a very weak division. The Flyers are in one of the most competitive divisions in the league and still finished 7-1-1 down the stretch. The Caps are good, but aren't on the same level with the Flyers. And remember, this series could be over if the Flyers could hold a 2 goal lead in the final period of game 1, but they didn't. They should end this series on Saturday.

MURRAY'S PLANS FOR SENS DON'T INCLUDE EMERY
TSN.CA 4/18/2008 12:55:26 PM
According to Ottawa Senators General Manager and head coach Bryan Murray, Ray Emery's tenure in the Nation's capital is likely over.
The Senator's top brass met with the media Friday to wrap up what turned out to be a disappointing season. When the subject of Emery was raised, Murray made his position clear.
"My plan is not to have him back," Murray told reporters.
Team owner Eugene Melnyk, who was part of the press conference refused to comment on the Emery situation.
This comes one day after Emery discussed his season with the media and stated that it was not his fault the team was eliminated from the post season. Emery also disputed the idea that he was a locker room “cancer”.
Although the Cayuga, Ontario native admits the season did not go the way that he wanted, he said he hopes to be a part of the team next year.
A buyout might be the most logical option for the Senators regarding their much maligned keeper. Emery is still owed two years and $6.75 million on the contract he signed last off-season after helping lead the Senators to the Stanley Cup final.
As TSN Hockey Analyst Bob McKenzie pointed out in his column on Thursday, the Senators caught a bit of a break because Emery does not turn 26 years old until September 28. That means that the team is obliged to pay him one-third of his remaining salary, not the two-thirds amount that is paid out to players who are 26 or older at the time of the buyout.
If the Sens are going to buy Emery out, the first window opens June 15, or 48 hours after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup final. That window closes on June 30. For teams that have salary arbitration cases, there's a second window that opens after the last salary arbitration award, later in the summer.
Regardless of how the Emery situation plays, this could be a very different looking Senators team next year as forwards Shean Donovan, Chris Kelly, Cory Stillman, Randy Robitaille and Martin Lapointe, along with blueliners Wade Redden, Mike Commodore and Luke Richardson will all be unrestricted free agents come July 1st.
In addition, Antoine Vermette, Brian McGrattan and Andrej Meszaros will all be restricted free agents and will likely be looking for raises.
"Times change and organizations change and players shift around quite a bit. That's the nature of it," said Redden.
I liked what was said yesterday on OTR, bringing in Pat Burns as coach and Adam Foote on defense. Redden has got to go, they lucked out with the Emery buyout.

The Sens need to rehaul their team a bit. And getting rid of Emery is the first step. Honestly, they should've gotten rid of him a few months back when his troubles first popped up. That would've saved a lot of headaches for the team.
Sens are definitely one shaky franchise. Amazing that a team can go from the Stanley Cup Finals to where they are now.

It seems to happen quite frequently with teams that make it to the Stanley Cup finals. Look at the Oilers. In the 2005-06 year, they were one game away from winning the Stanley Cup. The very next year, they were in the bottom 10 in the NHL.
Hell, look at the Ducks this year. They're one game away from being eliminated in the first round as well.
I'm not talking about lacking playoff success after having making it to the Final. I'm referring to how Ottawa had a solid Franchise that looked to be on their way to a Stanley Cup in the near future, and now they're in so much disarray that it's beyond a comprehension. Their goaltending is awful, their leadership is questionable, their salary situation is problematic, injuries are taking their toll, the coaching and team bonds are non-existent, etc...
Eric Draven
04-18-2008, 04:45 PM
The Oilers were in a whole bunch of disarray just after make the finals as well. We just lost an all-star defenseman. There was apparently a mass exodux of players leaving as well. Very shortly afterwards, the heart and soul player was traded. Not to mention the team was voted as one of the places players would least like to go. And this was in less than a year span of making the finals.
The Ducks might be in some disarray as well if Burke does end up leaving Anaheim for Toronto as rumored and if Niedermayer or Selanne actually retire and Perry gets a huge contract offer from another team.

The Devils' new arena had the 3rd highest ticket prices in the league during the regular season so I'm betting that trend continued. They were at the bottom of attendance this year even with a new arena due to years of boring trap hockey and the high cost of seeing a game. Die hard Rangers fans scooped them up to see "Fatso" and the Devils get eliminated.
I just hope we get a series that goes to seven games.
Entertaining game, but man they need better ice in the Verizon Center.

That's kind of weird because everytime I watched a Devils game, the arena would be empty/somewhat full the regular season and then somehow sell out during playoffs. I guess I shouldn't be shocked. They should have just hired Caps "fans" for the game:p
It was kind of embarassing even though I only like 2 players on the Devils.
I do nottttt want a Game 7, but the paranoid side of me thinks that's what NHL wants. It better be clinched Monday by the end of the 3rd. My nerves can't handle more OT's LOL.

A lot of series are going the distance it seems. Detroit, San Jose, and Montreal were all picked to win their respective series in four or five. There's a strong possibility they'll all go seven, and possibly with a few upsets along the way.

The Arrogant Ducks of Anaheim are eliminated! Pronger crushes any chance of his team tying the game by taking a stupid penalty. But that's not new, he's done that all series. Laughed when he was called and enjoyed hearing Larry David's "Pret-tay, pret-tay, pret-tay good." line for Modano's goal.

I said to my not so confident Habs fan professor before the playoffs started, that this could be the year the Bruins would upset the Habs. After the last two encounters where the Habs upset the Bruins plus the dominance the Canadiens have had, it would be their turn for a mammoth upset. But I picked the Habs to sweep and actually don't mind this version of the Canadiens like in previous seasons. At least in the off season they'll have a better time of recruiting free agents.
Game 7 History
The Canadiens and Bruins have meet six times in a Game 7 situation, with Montreal prevailing four times and Boston twice.
2004 - MTL 2, BOS 0
1994 - BOS 5, MTL 3
1991 - BOS 2, MTL 1
1979 - MTL 5, BOS 4 (OT)
1971 - MTL 4, BOS 2
1952 - MTL 3, BOS 1
Home teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs have a Game 7 record of 76-44 (.633) in all rounds, and a record of 25-17 (.595) in the preliminary or first round.
