Is this thread serious? :csad:

To answer the question:
I'd do anything for love as long as it benefits me. I guess that means, I'd do anything for me? Love is me, me is love? I love me.

I answered. What's your verdict?

I answered. What's your verdict?

My verdict is that I do not get to speak to you enough, we have similar ideals about love. That it should be all for me me me.

I like you

But what's "that"?

Well, if we're going theorize on what Meatloaf meant when he said, "I would anything for love, but I won't do that", I'd have to say that "that", the one thing he would not do, is stop loving.

Interesting.

Based on the statistics thus far, I think it would be safe to say that most people would do anything for love, but they wouldn't do that. Statistically speaking, of course.

O mush! I'm allergic to mush. :csad:

He'll not stop loving or he'll not stop loving her? The former is good, the latter... I think that should depend on the circumstance.

Do you enjoy it when men treat you badly?

meatloaf actually meant he'd be faithful and never lie and . . . agh, who cares anyway??

Of course not. If the love of my life dies... I'll not stop loving him. But if treats me like crap, he'll be out the door before he can even say the first letter of my name.

The way I see it, if she loves you, she'd not want to put your life in danger. Unless the bridge isn't high at all or that there's no danger involved in you jumping off from it.

The Question
04-22-2008, 08:31 AM
Reaserch is a beautiful thing....

Perceived ambiguity of "that"

Each verse comprises two things that he would do for love, followed by one thing that he would not do. It is that latter part of each verse that is the "that" of the title. However, some people misunderstand the lyrics, claiming that the singer never identifies what the "that" is which he is unwilling to do.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_%28But_I_Won%27t_Do_Tha t%29#cite_note-7) Steinman predicted this confusion during production.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_%28But_I_Won%27t_Do_Tha t%29#cite_note-autobiog-8) An early episode of the VH1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VH1) program Pop-up Video (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop-up_Video) made this claim at the end of the song's video: "Exactly what Meat Loaf won't do for love remains a mystery to this day."[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_%28But_I_Won%27t_Do_Tha t%29#cite_note-popup-9) A reviewer writing for All Music Guide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Music_Guide) also misunderstood the lyric, commenting that "The lyrics build suspense by portraying a romance-consumed lover who pledges to do anything in the name of love except "that," a mysterious thing that he will not specify."[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_%28But_I_Won%27t_Do_Tha t%29#cite_note-amg-5) While the reviewer concludes that the mystery is revealed during the closing stages of the song, it is not observed that "that" is revealed in every chorus throughout.
Although some people assume that "that" is an exophoric reference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exophora) to a sex act,[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_%28But_I_Won%27t_Do_Tha t%29#cite_note-msodvd-10) it is actually an anaphoric reference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaphora_%28linguistics%29) to the varying activities and feelings that are specified as antecedents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antecedent) in the lyric that the singer says that he won't do.

"I'll never forget the way you feel right now ..."
"I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight ..."
"I'll never do it better than I do it with you ..."
"I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life ..."In addition, the female vocalist identifies two other things that the lead singer denies that he will do: "You'll see that it's time to move on" and "You'll be screwing around." To both of these, the lead singer emphatically responds, "I won't do that! No, I won't do that!"
Meat Loaf says that the question "what is 'that'?" is one of the most popular questions he is asked.[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_%28But_I_Won%27t_Do_Tha t%29#cite_note-msodvd-10) In his 1998 VH1 Storytellers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VH1_Storytellers) special, he even explained it on stage using a blackboard and a pointing stick. In a 1993 promotional interview, Steinman states that the definition of "that" is fully revealed in the song in each of the several verses in which it is mentioned.
It's sort of is a little puzzle and I guess it goes by - but they're all great things. 'I won't stop doing beautiful things and I won't do bad things.' It's very noble. I'm very proud of that song because it's very much like out of the world of Excalibur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excalibur). To me, it's like Sir Lancelot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Lancelot) or something - very noble and chivalrous. That's my favorite song on the record - it's very ambitious.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_%28But_I_Won%27t_Do_Tha t%29#cite_note-bat2intdvd-js-11)[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_%28But_I_Won%27t_Do_Tha t%29#cite_note-12)
