Talk of a lounge was brought up some time ago, then Matt tried with his "John Roberts is a Terminator" thread, but it didn't go over so well... so here goes a second attempt at a bonafide Politics lounge, complete with a lounge-like title, which I'm sure sucks (but don't they all? :csad:)
So... let the lounging commence...
Good morning. I love the title!
They do look alike I tells you! And when the Supreme Court rules 5 to 4 that Skynet launching our own warheads at us is not a violation of the Constitution you're gonna be sorry! :cmad:

That will be the Supreme Court ruling which causes a Terminator invasion.
We don't need to worry as much of the Terminators Invasion as much as the Fragglerock invasion. Them buggers are harder to kill.

Some of the script inserts were amusing to say the least, especially when Bush refers to Karl Rove as "turdblossom" and asks Bush Sr. to fight him "mano a mano."
HAH, TurdBlossom. Someone needs that as a new Screenname.

Governor Strickland is doing a great job so far SB! He is very well like across the state!
(Not many people liked Taft.)
I hated the way Taft drove business away from Ohio by increasing State Corporate Tax Rates and wouldn't budge when Toyota wanted to open a plant there. He increased taxed on Cigarettes, and wanted to increase taxes on cigars just because it would be "fair" to the neighboring states with higher Tobacco Taxes. It's Crap!

Taft was a jackass, yes.
We just finished reading about the dawn of The Progressive Era in American History, quite possibly my favorite era in American history. Teddy Roosevelt was, I think, one of our most admirable presidents, aside from the complete screwjob that was The Panama Canal.
I also credit McKinley for paving the way for Vietnam and Iraq by completely abandoning our policy of isolation and getting us involved in that pointless Spanish American war.

I would only consider a judge an "activist" if they create law out of thin air or on shaky legal grounds to fit their own personal beliefs on what the law should be. I'm not for gay marriage, but if this ban violated the California Constitution, then it deserved to be overturned. I consider what the Supreme Court did in Kelo v. City of New London to be an activist ruling--I still don't understand how they could have ruled that way.
If I had to define it for most people, though, I would tend to believe that "an activist judge is someone who makes a ruling I don't like." :woot:

I can clearly see my wife doing this to me.
The Libertarian in me says that people should be free to do anything, ANYTHING, they want without any form of Government intervention until it harms any other person, physically or financially, through force or fraud or neglect. If two gay guys want to be married, it doesn't take away from my rights as an individual at all. It doesn't affect my relationship with any one, and will not affect a single thing inside my home. What it does do, is insure that if I want to do something in my home, whatever I want it to be within reason, I will not be forced by Government to stop. I see the overturning of the Ban a win for Freedom, and a win for the Rule of Law.
And to answer Marx, I try to say FairTax ATLEAST twice per thread. That's two. :)

No one can blame you for that Norm. As Jman said, I would probably be the same way if it were certain other politicians.
Senator Kennedy did apparently suffer a seizure this morning, not a stroke. The doctor says that he is in "no immediate danger."
"He is undergoing a battery of tests at Massachusetts General Hospital to determine the cause of the seizure. Sen. Kennedy is resting comfortably, and it is unlikely we will know anything more for the next 48 hours," a statement from his office said.

He would have been defeated by Bush because he was a liberal elitist in the same boat as Dukakis and Mondale.

Since this could go in the McCain thread...the Obama thread...AND the Clinton thread...I figured I would just post it in here.
Republican John McCain leads Barack Obama in two presidential swing states, as some of Hillary Clinton's core supporters shun the Democratic front-runner, polls showed Thursday.
The Quinnipiac University surveys had McCain up 45 to 41 percent on the Illinois senator in Florida, the epicenter of the 2000 recount drama, which also helped President George W. Bush back to the White House in 2004.
In Ohio, another vital battleground that narrowly went for Bush last time around, McCain leads Obama 44 percent to 40 percent.
Obama however leads McCain in Pennsylvania, by 46 to 40 percent. The state is a must-win for Democrats eyeing the White House.
The poll also appeared to bolster Clinton's arguments that she and not Obama is the best bet for Democrats to take on McCain in states likely to shape the outcome in November's general election.
She led Arizona Senator McCain in all three states, in which she also won in primary votes against Obama. The former first lady led 48 to 41 percent in both Florida and Ohio and by 50-37 percent in Pennsylvania.

I got an A on the NYS Math test and an A in University Stats. While I'm no math expert, I can certainly figure out when the math is there, and when it isn't. The math doesn't work for Clinton, so she needs to get out and let Obama do his thing.
I think Hillary would be the best candidate in the fall, but there are other candidates whom I have supported in primary elections who have not been able to fight in the general election. It happens all the time, and she's no different.
(of course, she annoyed me over a month ago with her gun-toting, whiskey guzzling housewife with a GED masquerade she pulled in PA, so I tried to remain neutral until a candidate was declared... and while I briefly floated with voting for McCain a while back, I quickly realized how flawed that idea was... this election has been pretty interesting...)

Okay, fair enough. Just remembered back when you were more defending Hilary and thought Bizarro Spice had arrived. :o
And yes, it is interesting...in the same way rubber-necking is interesting. It's times like this that Spider's Rant on Voting in Transmetropolitan rings true in my head.
They need new anchorwomen on MSNBC.
Contessa Brewer is the dumbest person I've ever seen in front of the camera. She always shouts "Oh... my... GOD! Look at that!" whenever a 'shocking' video, picture, etc. appears on the network. Not only that, she's always shouting at the top of her lungs; her voice sounds like a razor blade being dragged across a chalkboard; and her biases are never hidden.
Then there's another one, who acts as if MSNBC is "Access Hollywood."

No, see, Heath Ledger managed to bring gay rights to America with his captivating and all-too-accurate portrayal of homosexuality in the rural west. He moved an entire generation, helped start pro-gay riots all across the country, and his performance caused politicians to change their minds about homosexuality in America. Because of Heath Ledger, we can now marry in Massachusetts, and his death caused the California Supreme Court to re-evaluate its stance on gay marriage. He's a true hero.

The funny thing is, the rest of the world has pretty much forgotten about his death. And after The Dark Knight is released, people off these forums will truly forget him. That's why I don't understand why people are calling him the "James Dean" of our generation.

So, I thought I'd inform you all that I will be away from the forum a lot in the coming months, as I will be doing some traveling out West.
From May 30 (this Friday) through June 6, I will be in Phoenix, AZ, saying goodbye to a friend before she heads to Israel for a year.
From June 23 until July 27, I will be in the middle of New Mexico's desert, doing a really kooky "team building" program... but I get paid for it, so it will be worth it...
So, that's why I'll be gone. Since I'll be in the middle of the damn desert (kind of) in July, I don't expect to get access to the internet all that much... but I do get Saturdays off, and I will probably trek into Albuquerque as we are about an hour and a half away from the city, so if I do manage to get access to the internet, I'll try to pop in... I'm not taking my laptop with me to AZ either, so you'll have to survive without me next week.

Asked during a question-and-answer session at the National Press Club about the fact that a search of his family tree found he is a distant relative of Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential front-runner, Cheney said the two politicians were unlikely to hold a family reunion.
He said that the Cheney line on his father's side of the family dates to 1630's, and a Cheney family line on his mother's side dates to the 1650's.
"So, I had Cheneys on both sides of the family — and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney cracked. After pausing for laughter from the crowd, Cheney added, "You can say those things when you're not running for re-election."

No, my "permanent" residence is at home with my family in New York.
My school residence is in DC. New Mexico was work-related, Arizona was for pleasure, and so was Connecticut a couple months ago. My travels have exhausted me, to say the least.

I think we should continue discussing this matter here, since lazur hijacked the other thread to insult other members.
anyway....In all of this, I'm reminded about how little the media covered David Vitter's "DC Madame" sex scandal. In fact, I don't remember anyone really lashing out at him at all. Which is sad, since he not only had sex with a prostitute, but was an absolute hypocrite considering he was one of the proponents of impeaching Clinton for being "immoral."
Yet, for some reason, John Edwards deserves to be crucified for his actions. I'm not defending him by any means, but I do find it to be an interesting double standard.

I bowed out of that thread for those very same reasons. The conversation quickly went downhill. I don't enjoy getting caught up in negative and insulting conversations.

There's a huge double-standard over fidelity in Washington from both sides of the aisle. It's stupid to me, but I guess these guys look for whatever political weapon they can. It always amazes me when the guys with the biggest torches and nooses that are trying to destroy the guys who get caught having affairs wind up getting caught doing basically the same thing a year or three down the line. It's completely poor judgment and a lack of commitment and even...morals (Lord I hate that word...so loaded)...and definitely poor character for these guys to have these affairs and sex scandals. There are so many of these guys just praying one of their current or past conquests doesn't blow the whistle on them because they know they'll get absolutely crucified in public for it. And yet they not only continue to do these things but they also tend to lead the charge on witch hunts of people from the opposite party that get caught in their own affairs. It's stupid and contributes to the continued divide in partisan politics. Was the guy who got caught having the affair stupid for it? Absolutely. But I do think the issue tends to get blown way out of proportion for what it is and takes the focus away from the real things that need to get done by our government.

That's exactly it, Jag. Edwards has been out of office for four years, and while he did run for President last year, this scandal in no way reflects the kind of work he did as a politician. It does reflect poorly on his character and shows that he is not the greatest purveyor of judgment (but I never considered him to be the epitome of morality). However, when you look at the political work he did in and out of office, I think it's a shame that people are going to overlook that just because he had an affair.
I am glad he's not the Democratic nominee for President, simply because this scandal would deride him. But, he's not in a position to be President or VP in any future administration, so I don't see why this is just as important as the war between Georgia and Russia or the Beijing Olympics.
