View Full Version : On this thread movement.

What, precisely, was the point? Was the idea to move threads that are not explicitly geared towards spoilers? If so, it was a mistake, because there is absolutely no chance of enforcing such a policy consistently: the spoiler section will always contain threads that do not contain spoilers. The logical policy is that spoilers may be posted in that section, not that each topic should be about spoilers, because the former is simply less complicated and easier to enforce.

Moreover, how exactly is this thread movement reconciled with the fact that some of these threads (such as the Trailer 3 thread) are absolutely saturated with spoilers?

I just can't figure out the reasoning behind this.

Spoiler section has never been cluttered with too many threads whatsoever, I can almost say the same with Non-Spoilers. J, you've always done an amazing job with that, and I've even PM'ed you about it, but to me this huge and unnecessary overhaul seems to have your name on it, no offense, and doesn't seem necessary. And it's more than the lounge really, it's a handful of them. Please take consideration in giving thought to what the fans and the regular users are wishing for.

It's a simple clean up procedure, it's no big deal that you have to scroll down. The move was to make room for more spoiler specific topics in spoilers and put the topics that have no spoilers in them in here to spread the activity and make access to threads easier. As it was topics were hitting page 2 in a matter of hours in the spoiler section. I can't believe the ridiculous drama you guys are having over posting in a separate section.

Well that's understandable due to those reasons; but to be fair, the Lounge has always taken place in the spoiler forum. Infact, it's a deal to where that at times all the spoilers/info./ect. all starts up in there; now I'm not gonna make this all dramatic and such, but why move a thread that's gonna start spoilers and everything in a non-spoiler section? No offense intended, but do you understand what I'm saying friend? :yay:

As I said, the spoilers section will always contain non-spoiler discussion, and it will be impossible to enforce the philosophy consistently. It makes more sense to have the spoiler section used for free discussion (spoilers and non-spoilers both), while the non-spoiler section for restricted discussion (which is to say no spoilers). It's less complicated, enforceable, and simply more conducive to free discussion.

If clutter was the issue, a better solution would have been the merging and deletion of redundant or useless threads, rather than moving well-trafficked and popular threads over here, especially when those thread contain spoilers.

I can understand that, but I don't think it was a matter of getting scared; there thousands, hell maybe millions of members here who talk about off topic things. And since we're in such high numbers, I'd probably guess that it would be easier to have multiple off topic sections, correct? My main point is that the problem was the spoiler section was gettin' crowded and needed to be put somewhere else that happended to be less packed; thing is the problem wasn't prevented, it just got moved over here. So wouldn't that just make the non-spoiler section just as crowded? I know it's only one thread, but if you know the Lounge just as well as I do, you'd understand how packed it can get. :cwink: Now if I'm comprehending the matter the wrong way, would you please indulge me a little further? More or less messy than moving spoilers into the non-spoiler section? Also, I would think a little mess is preferable to the problems of this policy, as I've explained them.

it really is not an issue for you or anyone else to use this section and it's staying as it is.
This doesn't follow: you explained that one of the reasons for the move was because threads were being pushed to the second page of the Spoilers section in a matter of hours. So, it is an issue for users to be forced to use the second page, but not an issue for them to use a second section?

As I said, the issue isn't that we have to come to another section, but that the policy is simply unrealistic and not conducive to free discussion.

It's Sir but Hunter will do. :cwink: In the past community has served for ppl that want to talk about off topic stuff, a year or two back an X3 off topic thread was allowed and since then each major section was allowed a lounge, the purpose of which was to chat about off topic things not related to the movie in question by fans that didn't wish to venture into community.

The idea wasn't to prevent the amount of threads that are being made, the idea was to spread them out and ease the clutter in spoilers, the lounge was one that got moved b/c it is not meant to contain spoilers.

Just so it is seen, I posted this in the Lounge in response to Mister J:

Very well, J. I respect you and I think you do a fine job moderating. I just warn you now: at some point, spoilers will probably find their way in here. I'm not saying it's going be me... but it will probably happen in some way from someone. I've read all the posts by you, Hunter and the gang... and I understand your stance. Still, I don't see why we couldn't just allow it in the Spoilers where it's always been. Little tidbits always make their way in here, simply because of the anything-goes spirit. Most of them are unintentional, but they happen.

I think I speak for most when I say we would like the Lounge in the Spoilers forum. I don't expect you to adhere to this. Just saying. Thank you for not taking action against any of us. Keep the request in mind, is all.

Well Hunter :cwink:, I know that it's usually ment to be off topic and such, but ya know, there's always gonna be the people who are gonna spread spoilers down to pretty much every single thread in the entire SHH forum. My main point is that, sure members are gonna talk about off topic stuff and you need to spread up the clusters of spoilers in all. Moving them to a section nobody visit does not seem to make them more accessible than having them on the second page of the section everybody visits. I understand that you think this will increase activity here, but the more likely scenario is that these threads will simply die, and the corresponding discussions will find their way into threads in the spoiler section. This is one of the "enforceability" problems I keep mentioning.

It's true. No matter what you put in here, people are gonna go where the action is. They want what everyone else outside of the Hype doesn't have: the dirt. I've always seen Non-Spoilers as the minority - and that's fine. Not EVERYONE wants to be spoiled. But the Spoilers is where everyone goes.

And when a new trailer debuts or pictures leak or whatever - those threads get EXTREMELY cluttered. The pages move too fast. You're on a new one every minute. So where do we pick up the slack at? Where do we bring the conversation where the n00bs and lurkers won't go? THE LOUNGE. Spoilers. Are. Inevitable. I can't stress this enough. Same goes for threads like manips. Trailer #3 was moved back already: good move.

Some people are getting the full number of viewable threads in both sections. I'm guessing your viewing options are setup differently. If you could, from your User Control Panel, selecting --> Edit Options --> Thread Display Options --> Default Thread Age Cut Off, should allow you to see more threads. Mine is set to 'show all threads'; about 50 pages and 20 pages in the respective forums. Does that tend to the matter?
