I saw Wanted at a pre-screening today (June 11th) in NYC at the Loews on 84th and Broadway. We were told this was the first screening for the film in the country.
I didn't read the comic.
I know nothing about the comic.
Don't ask me how it compares.
I can, however, tell you one thing...THIS MOVIE ROCKS. HARD. Seriously, it was a damn entertaining film, full of crazy crap and awesomeness. That's how I describe WANTED: pure awesomeness.
Ask away.

So is there a twist of some sort?

I bet they are really bad guys aren't they....
how are the other four heads of the assasin clans around the world protrayed?

Yes, there is a twist, though I realized it the moment Terrence Stamp showed up.
Other four heads of the assassin clans? That wasn't in the movie, sorry.

So, how would you review Wanted? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

how long was it?
how would you rate it against the other blocbusters of this summer?
is most of the good stuff in the trailer, or are there plenty of surprises?

I'd say it's maybe an hour and a half, perhaps a bit longer.
It was such a fun movie, with plenty of "OH!" moments. Though some of the best stuff is glimpsed at in the trailer, you need to see the whole scene to see how awesome it actually is.
I was just as much entertained with Iron Man as I was with Wanted. Though they are a bit different, they were both incredibly fun films.
If I had to pinpoint one particular element that made Wanted stand out (other than the fantastic action sequences), it would be Wesley Gibson's voiceover. I don't want to ruin it, but it's great.
I'd definitely rate Wanted a 9/10.

how much screen time does Morgan Freeman get?
how was McAvoy and Jolie's performance?

The closing scene in the comic has really nice and pretty much insulting (to the reader) monologue.
It's about how the person reading the comic is just a loser like Wesley used to be and the last shot is of Wesley's face with the caption addressed to the reader "Here's my face as I'm ****ing you right in the ass!".
Is there anything like this with the ending of the movie?
Compi716
06-12-2008, 04:46 PM
All the performances were damn good. Morgan Freeman has a fine amount of screentime, I suppose. Certainly more than Lucius Fox.
The ending monologue is VERY similar to that, Nidopal, although not exact. It's the same message, though.

Wow... comparing "Wanted" to "Iron Man" - that's high praise! That's EXACTLY what I was hoping to hear; I really, really want this movie to live up to the promise of that red band trailer!
How did the special effects and stunts in the movie hold up? "Matrix"-level of coolness, or do they fall flat? I love what I've seen of them in the trailers so far (like that guy getting nailed with the computer keyboard, and the keys spelling "F--- YOU" in mid-air); I'm hoping they hold to that level throughout the movie?
Compi716
06-12-2008, 08:14 PM
The SFX were damn good, and there was only one moment where I thought, "well, that's CGI."
I would like to clarify one thing: I think Iron Man is a better movie, though Wanted is just as entertaining. I feel that Iron Man has something that, for me, just hits closer to home.
That said, Wanted is still KICKASS.

So are the performances believable or over-the-top?
I know you havent read the comic, BUT...
Does the name 'Mister Rictus' pop up anywhere? =)

1) Any female nudity? :o
2) How many action sequences were there?
3) Did all the exciting parts get spoiled in the trailers already?

Is wesley a bit evil like the comics when he learns what he can do.

Performances are very good. Not over the top (at least I think so).
I can't recall any mention of a Mister Rictus.
Female nudity? Jolie's ass.
I really wasn't counting the action sequences. Enough is the answer I'm going to give.
The trailers haven't spoiled the movie, don't worry.
Oh yeah, Wesley starts to get a bit of a dark side (but only a bit).

Thanks for the comments so far - it's been fascinating!
Something else I'm curious about - the new red band trailer had a quick shot of an ATM telling Wesley "you're an *********"; I thought it was hilarious. :woot: It's the first time we've seen any sign of HUMOR in any of the trailers. It actually had me a bit worried with the earlier trailers, because although the action is awesome, I don't want to lose that wry humor that Mark Millar has sprinkled in his work. Does the film have more of that sense of humor to it, or is it serious all the way through? And if it does have that Millar style of humor, does it work for the film? I'd hate to think of this thing becoming some sort of goofy joke-fest... it's a tough line to walk!
Compi716
06-13-2008, 06:47 PM
The movie is hilarious! If you liked that bit with the ATM, you'll love the rest of the comedy. I'd say there was just as much dry humor as there was action.
Though that may be pushing it.

Okay, so I read 'Wanted' over the weekend.
While I enjoy both the movie and the book equally, I can't help but KNOW that, had the adapted the comic faithfully, the movie would have been SO much better.
But it's still good. A word to the die-hard fans: don't expect an exact translation. The concept is there, but the execution is quite different.

Awesome! That's great news!
Since the film's marketing department seems to really be banking on Angelina Jolie, how would you say "Wanted" stacks up to her other action movies, like "Tomb Raider" or "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"?

1) I didn't like the book, i found Wesley a repulsive and unrelatable character. Is McAvoy's Wesley likable ? does he come of as a regular guy in over his head but still in the end decent ?
2) Are there any sustained gunfights like the lobby scene from The Matrix ?

Yes, and on a related side note: That shot of her back all naked and wet seen in the early teaser poster... does she walk around for most of the movie like that? Because that would be awesome. :oldrazz:
Angelina Jolie is sooooo hot... I'm glad she's doing movies like this, instead of just the animated stuff where we don't get to enjoy the eye candy. :woot:

1. How was Morgan Freeman in the film? Did he have a reasonably large role?
2. Sort of the same question.. was Angelina Jolie believable as Fox?
Thanks for doing this!

Jolie was very good and VERY sexy. I liked her character a lot, and I really liked the fact that she didn't overshadow Wesley. He IS the main character, no matter what the TV spots make it out to be.
Wesley is a very likeable guy. He's the everyman who's in waaaaay over is head.
Morgan Freeman. How can he not be awesome?
The gunfights are amazing. That's all I will say about them, because they need to be seen. You'll see.

Just in case somebody asks, let me discuss the music for a moment.
To be honest, I can't exactly recall the theme. It wasn't particularly memorable. That said, it was still very good, and flowed with the movie exceptionally well.

You know, one of the things that some people have been complaining about is the supposed lack of "realism", saying things like "Oh, it's impossible to curve a bullet" and stuff like that. On the other hand, I say these are supposed to be super-powered assassins, or so it seems in the trailers - these aren't skills that just anyone can get trained to do. I mean, they make a big deal out of Wesley being the son of the world's greatest assassin, which would imply some sort of genetic or hereditary ability; it's not like they just grabbed a guy off the street.
So, my question is - am I right? Is there anything in the movie about Wesley and the other assassins having abilities above and beyond "normal" people, or is there no explanation in the film for WHY these assassins are able to do this kind of stuff?

You are right, MightyGuy. It's said right when Wesley is brought to the Fraternity that he is one of the few people alive who can perform these feats. It's explained, though you're not going to walk out of theater wondering if people can actually do that. Just go into the theater to be entertained.

Awesome; I guess that kind of puts the whole "this isn't real" argument to bed, if they're supposed to be superpowers. Thanks!
Oh, by the way - who the heck is Terence Stamp in the movie? I was stoked when I saw his name attached to the film, but I can't for the life of me figure out what kind of role he's playing. It must be something of interest, since he recently mentioned in an interview that he's supposed to be in the sequel as well? I'm hoping it's a cool role... and that, preferably, he insists on people kneeling before Zod. :woot:

Ah, General Zod. I didn't even know he was in the movie until he showed up, and then I was like, "ZOD?!"
Stamp plays a guy who is basically the assistant of Wesley's real father (not the one who is killed at the beginning of the film). Together they let Wesley know how corrupt the Fraternity is.

Ah, very cool - that would help explain how he's going to have a bigger role in the "Wanted" sequel, if he's sort of a "voice of guidance" for Wesley or something. Gotta love having Zod back in a comic book movie! :woot:

The "Loom of Destiny" tells them. Morgan Freeman can read the weaving code. The "Loom of Destiny" says, "Hey, dude; Momar Kadafi is a jerk... go get 'em." Kind of weird.

I just watched this last night. To me, it's CSI meets The Matrix. I loved the plot twist, but I could have done without the slow motion blood trails.
