Wow, they were smokin at the damn rookie camp? Damn. Talk about idiots.

Yes, but with WOMEN! Seriously though...you have to be an idiot to even THINK about smoking on a team run by freakin' Pat Riley. He's getting a fine, a possible suspension, and a cozy spot on Riles' ****list. Way to go, Chalmers.

the only thing good that Oklahoma City has for them is Kevin Durant and I highly doubt he will want to wear those colors for more then five years. In five years, Durant will end up in Los Angeles, Philly, New York, Chicago or Brooklyn.

Lakers G Bryant opts against surgery

LOS ANGELES (TICKER) —Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant has decided not to have surgery on his right pinkie finger.

The NBA’s reigning MVP, Bryant announced Tuesday on his web site, kb24.com, that he opted against surgery when he learned that it could keep him sidelined for 12 weeks.

“When the doctors told me recovery from a procedure could be 12 weeks, I just decided now was not the time to have surgery,” Bryant said.

Bryant, 30, played in all 82 games and averaged 28.3 points last season despite suffering ligament damage in the pinkie against the New Jersey Nets on February 5. The Lakers reached the NBA Finals, losing to the Boston Celtics in six games.

“I’ve always felt that I can still focus and play at a high level even though various injuries,” Bryant said. “That’s just part of the game.”

Offseason surgery was recommended, but Bryant postponed the operation to play in the Beijing Olympics, where he helped lead the United States to the gold medal.

“I am just really excited and looking forward to be being there with the guys when camp opens in a few weeks,” Bryant said.

The Lakers open camp on September 27 and host the Portland Trail Blazers in their season opener on October 28.

so what time is good for surgery, kobe?

I could kind of understand Kobe for opting to wait for it. Its important he sets the tone for his team......and this is coming from a guy who can't stand Kobe, but I respect his game. Plus the surgery isn't necessary per say.
Anyway, I'm so waiting for Randolph to be traded and Marbury to be bought out. I GUARANTEE the Knicks will make the playoffs. Even though Curry is a fat arse crybaby, with Darko behind him, it might push him to work hard. I actually think Darko would thrive under Dantoni and under the right circumstances.

I was hoping Kobe would take the surgery, because I don't think it's that important for him to miss the pre-season anyway. And surgery will prevent that injury from getting worse down the line. However, I guess Kobe has heard from the specialists and concluded that the injury isn't too detrimental that he needs surgery right away, so he is putting it off. I hope he makes the right decision.

I think Steve Kerr saw the Suns' window is closing fast, so he made a desperate shot at a championship last season (and also to get rid of the trouble-maker Marion). But after they got ousted in the playoff, this trade has became a bust for Suns.

Funny how Go Web Go is saying he's glad the Heat got rid of him when they did when Shaq is the main reason they won the 2006 championship. Without Shaq relating to the team and making guys like Wade, Williams, Walker, and Haslem better they wouldn't have won in 2006.

So give Shaq some credit and stop ripping on him. Those who are bashing him would look stupid if he led Phoenix to a championship. Regardless of how ANYONE feels about Shaq personally, there's no denying that he commands double to triple teams that open up other players.

Oh stop. You think I don't know how big a role Shaq played throughout their title run 2 years ago? I know you remember quite well. Yes, the Heat would not have gotten over the hump without him. That's a no-brainer, though it was Wade who ultimately put the team on his back. What I said is that I'm glad they got rid of him when they did . Between his constant injuries and his falling out with Pat Riley, it was pretty apparent that he was becoming more of a detriment to the team than a help - especially when they were way out of the playoff picture so early in the season. If there was the option to move him, why wouldn't I want it to happen, even with his previous contributions to the team?

I don't hate the guy and I'm sure as hell not ripping him. I don't know where you pulled that out from. I'll be forever grateful for that banner hanging up at the AAA, but the future wasn't about him and the rest of his bulky $60 million deal. It's about Wade, and now, Beasley. :word:

And seriously, D-Wade is the reason why the Heat won that title, even Shaq has said so.

While I still have my beliefs that the officials made certain calls in favor of Miami, at the end of the day we lost the games and the championship. We have no one to blame but ourselves in that situation. Fair is fair.

But for anyone to say that it was Wade alone is crazy. Wade played great games, made great shots, and proved he wanted it more. But at the end of the day if it wasn't for Shaq making guys like Wade, Haslem, Williams, and Walker better players they wouldn't have won the championship. Just like if it wasn't for Shaq Kobe wouldn't have three rings to his name either.

Shaq isn't the Shaq of 2000 anymore, that is a fact. But there's no denying that he still contributes and is still dominant at what he does. He still commands double to triple teams because he can get an easy bucket for his team. I'd feel more comfortable with Shaq in the low block than Shaq at the free throw line that's for sure.

@Mister J- Just because you're a mod now doesn't mean you can insult me or throw out sarcastic remarks at me now either. You're not better fan or bigger fan than me.

But as for the 2006 championships? I'm over it. Dallas lost the games. I still believe that there are certain instances of the game that are fixed for the more popular teams. But at the end of the day teams play to win and Dallas didn't play to win. What's done has been done for the last two years and Miami is the one with the championship banner not Dallas.

Of course that's all Miami Heat fans have now is to rely on the past since they haven't succeeded after 2006. :yay:

Ah the old injury excuse? You didn't make the playoffs, we did. We lost in the first round yes. But I'll take a championship loss and two playoff exits over not actually making it to the playoffs or even be considered.

But the bottom line is much like Miami we have nothing to celebrate over either. We don't have a championship, received two first round exits, and so forth. I'm not bragging. If all you have to make yourself feel better is the past then so be it.

Perhaps nominally ...and then it's a reach.

Two first round exits followed by a Finals loss, being led by the most talented player in the league, is still reason to be optimistic and look forward to the season. A Finals meltdown followed by two first round exits, led by a former MVP who clearly doesn't have the mental toughness to lead a team to a title, is simply cause to say "Oh ****. Not again." in response to the upcoming season. :funny:

Is it really an excuse when it's true?

Wade missed 51 games in 06-07, Shaq missed 40, but that has nothing to do with last year. It's only a fun fact.

07-08? Wade missed another 51, Shaq only played in 33 before they shipped him to Phoenix - throw in another 50 missed by Haslem, 25 by Mourning, and fill those empty roster spots with a bunch of NBDL players. Are you seriously expecting a playoff appearance? :whatever:

I am also once again curious how the mid-season trades of last year will turn out this year. Now they have a full season to work out the kinks. Also curiouis about the impact that D-Tone will have on the Knicks. Wouldn't mind seeing them get some respect back.

Wow.

More surgery for Agent Zer0, ey? And he signed a how-many million dollar contract this year? My goodness.

Arenas to Miss Camp, Season's First Month After Surgery

Gilbert Arenas confirmed that he underwent a surgical procedure this morning that "cleaned out some debris" in his left knee. Arenas, who has undergone two surgeries to repair the left knee in the last two seasons, has been limited during the rehab process all summer and said he has planned all along on not participating in training camp or the preseason.

Arenas, who signed a six-year, $111 million contract this summer, said he plans on returning to game action sometime in early December which would mean that he'd miss at least the season's first month. The Wizards open the regular season Oct. 29 at home against New Jersey and play a total of 14 games in October and November.

"I just had some floating debris in there that was slowing me down," said Arenas, who seemed to be in good spirits. "It was irritating the knee so we decided to go in there and clean it out. This should actually allow me to come back faster."

Arenas was limited to 13 regular season games last season and missed the final eight regular season games and the playoffs the previous season after tearing the left meniscus in the knee during a game against Charlotte on April 4, 2007.

I've been on vacation and just flew back into town late last night so I'm still in the process of fleshing this all out. I can't yet tell you whether or to what extent president Ernie Grunfeld and coach Eddie Jordan were prepared for all of this.

We do know that the team has two point guards on the current roster - Antonio Daniels and Dee Brown - and has precious little space underneath the luxury tax threshold. It would appear, as of right now, that the Wizards will go into the season with this group and wait for Arenas to get healthy.

More later.

I agree, but was just making the point that I'd like to see them contend for a championship. It's going to be extremely hard for them to duplicate or top what they did last season with the Lakers now having Pau for an entire season and Artest being traded to Houston - and that's without mentioning the usual suspects like San Antone and Phoenix - though I think the Hornets are better than the Suns. There's no shortage of competition.

We're already soft in the post and getting killed on the offensive glass. Udonis is going to be a bit overpaid to be a backup to Beasley at the 4 (sooner, rather than later), but the man still has good value.

While Tinsley would be the best PG on the roster, he's a 30-year old, injury-prone, headcase with no outside shot. That's not worth taking on 21M over the next 3 years and getting rid of a guy like Haslem. I'll take my chances with the Banks/Chalmers/Quinn combo instead. If they want to move Haslem, they can do better in the exchange.

I wouldn't do it straight up, but if the Pacers took Marcus Banks (which is apparently the only way the Heat would do the deal) I don't know...frees up a lot more cap space. At the same time, Haslem's PJ Brown V2 - he's tough on the boards and a good defender. I'd hate to see him go.

There's no doubt that Arenas, Butler and Jamison are one of the NBA's top trios when healthy, but you can't tell me you think those 3 are capable of leading Washington to a title, or even getting them out of the East. Yes, they're a "nice" team. They can win up to 40-45 (50 is pushing it) games and put up a fight for a division title, but as long as the Celtics and Pistons are around (even on the decline, boths teams are better) - not to mention LeBron, and to a lesser extent the Magic, and the Heat - the Wizards are going to have a tough time getting out of the first round, let alone make it out of the conference.

That's why I said they shouldn't have broken the bank for Arenas or re-sign Jamison for what they did. They should have chosen one or the other, but instead are now handcuffed to both players and really don't have anyone on the roster now that can help get them over the hump (other than Butler) AND won't be able to sign any players that can potentially get them deep into the playoffs. They should have waited for guys like Amare, Boozer, even Wade or LeBron to hit the market in a season or 2 and make a run at them. In the mean time, a Butler/Jamison or Butler/Arenas combo would have kept them in the same spot they have been for the past 3 seasons or so.

Good points, yes. I think the decision to keep both those guys boiled down to Washington's desire to keep Arenas, who said he would leave if they didn't re-sign Jamison. And I guess the Wizards would rather take their chances with Arenas/Butler/Jamison over the long haul than with Butler and a bunch of nobodies, holding out that one of the free-agent studs in 2010 would choose D.C. instead of New York, New Jersey, or any of the other teams that are dumping salary like crazy. Even the Grizzlies and Timberwolves are trying to unload.

I don't expect Jamison to finish his contract in D.C., though. They'll trade him eventually. Arenas would be harder to move, given the size of his contract, but we learned in February that hefty contracts (Shaq) aren't necessarily immovable.

True dat, true dat. I just think the Wizards were too quick to re-sign Arenas. It was obviously now or never, but the guy was coming off a major knee injury that caused him to miss the majority of the season and is now going to miss the beginning of next season because of another surgery on the same knee. Not good.

I hope this true! Get that clown out of NY! Marbury, Wade, Beasley and Marion......SOUNDS ok. But it won't happen. Riley won't deal with a knucklehead like Marbury. Plus Wade can't play with him. The only team I can see Marbury going to is Detroit becuase the veterans there won't let his negative "force" mess with them, though I don't see it happening. Dude is probably done in the NBA.

With him gone, the Knicks will win 40 games this year. :o

"Ugh" is right. I just don't get some of these idiot millionaire athletes, man. They can potentially end their careers, or worse, by riding these bikes - or in this moron's case - a freakin' moped. Look what happened to Jay Williams. Done. Kellen Winslow ended his season a few years ago by attempting to play stuntman in an empty parking lot. Ben Roethlisberger was lucky he wasn't killed when he was thrown from his crotch rocket.

There are quite a few teams throughout sports that forbid players from these kind of activities (the Warriors being one of them) and have the ability to TERMINATE their deals, which of course, is unheard of because winning is the only thing that matters in the end (and I get that.) These guys essentially just walk away with lighter pockets, but when you've just signed a new $67 million contract like Ellis just did than a 50 or 75K fine is chump change.

Radmonovic was hurt a few years back after he just signed with the Lakers. Remember that? He was fine $500,000. Hardly chump change. Sure it won't break Monte, but if they fine him anywhere close to that (which they should) that would basically be like docking him one full pay check.

I'm ok with them being able to do some things. But come on riding a motorcycle is just asking to get hurt, like you said look at all of the other guys that have been hurt so far riding them.

I mean some contracts are a bit over board. Skydiving and other clauses. Sure you can get hurt skydiving, but worst thing that happens is you die. So really nothing you can do about that.

But there is one athlete that did take heed of his choices.

Several years back Zo had a custome austin martin built for him (I think it was a martin) it was all decked out and was a high end sports car. But then one of his friends either was hurt or died in a car wreck so he thought about it and returned it to the dealer (I think right when it was finished for him, I'm not even sure he drove it once.)

Nah, Kobe isn't Michael, but nobody will ever be MJ.

Thank you. Finally someone. I know we are all prisoners of the moment but it seems even respected journalists are acting like they never watched MJ play pre-first retirement. Getting all caught up in the Kobe hype this year (not that he isn't a phenomenal player) and people already crowning Lebron as king when he hasn't done or won ****ing ****!

There may one day ( I hope it happens) come a player that will surpass MJ as the greatest ever. Hell I mean look at who came before him. Wilt, Russell, Monroe, Dr. J, Bird and then Magic along with others.

But the reason that it is going to be even hard for players to do now is that they have no heart. They do not play balls out, they don't love the game the way they used to. They love their money and fame.

This is why I give Kobe so much props. Despite all of the **** that has gone on with him off and on the court when it's game time he is still a killer. As ice cold as we have seen since MJ and Miller. That is because the most important thing to him when he plays is that he is the best.

He says that he doesn't want to be MJ and he will never be the best player, just the best Kobe. But that's a damn lie and you can see it. He wants to be the best, he wants to dethrone MJ. He won't but he is trying as hard as he can and has come as close to MJ as we have seen yet.

As for the rest, there are some sprinkled here and there that do love the game and do care but the rest don't, not as much. The level of play is lower, different rules make it harder for defenses to play hard nose physical ball making it easier for offensive players and they aren't even as good as the offensive players of old. Overall the quality is down and so it will be even harder for someone to be on MJ's level.

None of these soft ass pussy kids would even get out of their hotel suite if they had a tummy ache or the sniffles. MJ played with the flu, was dehydrated and had a 101 fever. Sure some might have been exaggerated but he was no where near 100%. And what did he do? Put them on his back.

Championship series, MJ finds a way to win no matter what.

Yes...I'm happy that he got us to the playoffs finally, but we need a change. He is not big on young players and The Warriors are almost as young as it comes in the league. He needs to give them more opportunities to prove themselves.

Otherwise they are definitely not going to make the playoffs in an even deeper West.

Well, aside from the fact that I'm a Lakers fan, I do think Lakers have a good shot at repeating as WC champ. It does hinges on whether Kobe's pinky is indeed okay without the surgery, and whether Byrum can come back 100% and continue to improve. Oh, and I hope both Pasol and Odom can learn how not to disappear during the big games.

In his prime, he was a bad man. I definitely agree with you about the work ethic of most players nowadays. The fundamentals are slowly degrading because players only seem to work on a few things as opposed to developing skill sets.

Yeah it was. A very satisfying one to watch. :csad:Speak for yourself; one of my best friends is a huge KG fan, so I was happy for her in that regard, but that one hurt. When we fell behind by six points in the 2nd quarter, I knew it was over. There D smothered Kobe and made Gasol look especially charminesque.:csad::o

This came out of nowhere:

LOS ANGELES -- Jason Williams announced his retirement Friday, ending his 10-year NBA career less than two months after signing with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Williams, who helped the Miami Heat to the NBA title in 2006, averaged 11.4 points, 6.3 assists and shot 39.6 percent from the floor in 679 games.

The point guard was drafted seventh overall pick in 1998 out of Florida by the Sacramento Kings and averaged 12.8 points and six assists as a rookie.

Williams joined the Memphis Grizzlies three years later, and in 2001-02 averaged 14.8 points and eight assists. In four seasons with the Grizzlies, Williams became the club's career assists leader.

He played for the Heat from 2005-2008, and started all 23 playoff games in Miami's title run. He signed with the Clippers on Aug. 7.

So long, J-Will. Thanks for your one good year here which helped lead Miami to a title. ;)
