MJ's best season was '96-'97; what was he: 32? Kobe still has several really good years ahead. The body is in its prime from 28-33. If he stays healthy, this year should treat him kindly. I don't think he'll win another MVP though.

By doing what a lot of premiere shooters do: over-shoot. He might have been taking between 500 and 1,000 shots per day in addition to his normal practice workouts. That takes it's toll on the shooting wrist.

Has there ever been a upcoming season prediction thread in here, maybe a poll on a Yahoo site through here where we can make early predictions for Rookie of the Year, Champs, Biggest Turnaround, etc. That'd be pretty fun.
Zephyr Alexian
10-21-2008, 11:00 PM
We could do predictions. I haven't fully narrowed mine down yet, but what I have so far:
MVP: I'm going to go out on a short limb and say Amare Stoudemire. If Phoenix can win fifty games or more, he'll have a shot. If voters start going according to the 'Steve Nash' rules of team record, then KG or Kobe will probably win because I see the Celtics and Lakers winning the most games again in their respective conferences. I think both will come up just short of 60.
Eastern Conference Finals: I think it will be Detroit vs. Cleavland. During last years Eastern Conference finals, Chauncey wasn't at full strength and Rip was hurt. If they're healthy, they'll play Lebron and co. (I think Boston's season will be injury plagued and I have a feeling that they will get bounced in the 1st or 2nd round. KG will play hard every night, but I'm not so sure that Ray Allen will. Depending on which Rondo shows up, they could score 80 or triple digits. At least their defense won't fall off, but teams with a lot of offensive weapons are going to give them fits. . . or just Lebron by himself. The Celtics better get home court advantage all the way through. They don't want to see Detroit, Cleavland, or possibly even Orlando 4 times in a series.)
Western Conference Finals: Young blood vs. the old man. Hornets vs. Lakers. That could go either way. Both teams can push the tempo and also run a half-court set. If this series happens, Chris Paul is going to abuse Derek Fisher, but I don't think the Hornets front line can check Gasol. Bynum: I don't know what he'll do. Kobe's self-explanatory. Odom may not even be there, especially if Ariza keeps playing in the regular season like he is now. I know this is a 7-game series. Winner is probably the one with home court. I'm picking the Lake Show because a fan can hope.:)
Finals: Cleavland vs Lakers: Unfortunately, I think that Lebron will get his first ring at Kobe's expense, but I hope not.
Rookie of the Year: Hmm, offensive skill sets seem to win this more than defensive ability. I don't see Oden getting it because McMillan already labeled him as a defensive presence with clean up duty and limited offensive touches. I think Rudy Fernandez has a great shot, and he's not a popular pick so I'll take him.
Defensive Player of the Year: Ron Artest. If the team stays healthy, this guy is going to have a comeback year. He's still a shut-down defender and he's physical.
All Star Selections:
West
G - Chris Paul
G - Kobe Bryant
F - Dirk Nowitzski
F - Amare Stoudemire
C - Tim Duncan <unless they move him back to forward again.
East
G - Chauncey Billups
G - Dwayne Wade
F - Lebron James
F - Elton Brand - barring injury
C - Dwight Howard
I don't feel like mentioning every reserve, but some I feel with get the nod are KG, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, Gasol, Brandon Roy, Baron Davis, Rip Hamilton, Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler, and maybe some surpries like Jose Calderone and TJ Ford.
All Star MVP - Chris Paul
That's it for now. I doubt half of this list is accurate because I think that injury is going to affect it and there are going to be some serious shockers coming out of both conferences. It will be fun to watch.

I guess he'll be considered that if he gets another ring or so. Most of the all-time greats have multiple appearances, even if they don't win every time. The greatest example of that is the NBA logo. Jerry West only has one championship, but Russell and company are responsible for that. He plays through pain, so you have to give him that.

Bryant leaves preseason game with knee injury
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Kobe Bryant hyperextended his right knee in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' exhibition game Tuesday night.
Bryant, who scored four points in 14 minutes against the Charlotte Bobcats, did not come out with the team for the second half. The Lakers announced Bryant will be re-examined Wednesday.
Bryant did not speak with reporters after Los Angeles' 102-98 victory.
"I didn't even ask him about the injury," coach Phil Jackson said. "The trainer said he hyperextended his knee somewhat. We'll see what it's like (Wednesday), then go from there."
Bryant injured his knee jumping for a rebound with 3:08 left in the first half. The reigning NBA MVP limped off the court favoring his right leg. He motioned to the bench to come out and Jackson called a 20-second timeout.
I hope it's not serious.

Bulls guard Larry Hughes dislocates shoulder
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Chicago Bulls guard Larry Hughes left Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a dislocated right shoulder.
Hughes left the game with 3:16 to play in the third quarter and did not return after getting his arm caught under Minnesota forward Mike Miller as the two dove for a loose ball. Hughes was leading Chicago with 21 points when he left.
Hughes, averaging 13 points per game in the preseason, is fighting for playing time in a crowded backcourt featuring Kirk Hinrich, Ben Gordon and No. 1 draft pick Derrick Rose.

If most of his nights are like that, then he'll have a serious shot. The Southwest Division will be the toughest in the NBA this year.
The Hornets, Mavericks, Spurs, and Rockets all won 50 games last year and all are contenders this year.(:chuckles: maybe not Dallas, but they can steal some precious regular season games away.)
CP3 has a great shot at winning it.
LastSunrise1981
10-23-2008, 12:23 PM
Ah, people are counting out Dallas once again? What is it with everyone on this board and their hatred of Dallas? Dallas will definitely be in the playoffs this year.
But I'm also a realist and I'm not going to expect some mindblowing change that will automatically guarantee us a championship. It's going to take us awhile to adjust to Carlisle's system, but with a training camp with him under our belts and us actually having camp with Kidd this time around, things should go a lot better for us.
No doubt it'll be a tough year. Houston improved, New Orleans is going to be there, Los Angeles(Lakers) will be tough, Phoenix will be there, and so will San Antonio. But that's why you play the games. I am looking forward to our season and it'll be watching every game.
LastSunrise1981
10-23-2008, 12:26 PM
As far as the MVP is concerned? It's going to come down to Kobe and CP3 more than likely. I do like Chris Paul though. He reminds me a lot of Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe. His game is very similar to both players and as far as I can tell he has no weaknesses.
He has a great all-around game and he's the main reason Dallas went home early again last year. There's simply no stopping him because he can shoot, handle the ball, pass, and even when he shoots you have the feeling it's going to go in, mainly because I rarely see him miss and when he misses it still looks good.
As a Dallas fan I'd like to see us go all the way this year, but if we don't I think it'll be Los Angeles/New Orleans in the WCF.
Zephyr Alexian
10-23-2008, 01:05 PM
CP3's weakness is iso-post defense. A team has to upset or at least attempt to upset his offensive flow by making him work defensively. Not easy because he's an exceptional athlete who doesn't seem to tire easily.
Dallas should make it to the post-season if everyone is healthy, but the division is so packed, they'll be fighting for a low seed playoff birth. Legitimately and barring a major injury to another team's superstar or franchise player, New Orleans, San Antonio will probably have better records.(only one of those has to have a better record to immediately bump your seeding down to 5th) Houston is a variable in my mind, but if they play defense the way they did last year, they'll probably jump ahead too.
Your squad is still nice. They do need to make sure that Howard and Nowitzski stay healthy. The latter, you guys definitely need.
I think this season will be more competitive than the last. So many good teams. So many story lines.
I want to see another Chris Paul/Deron Williams game. One where both are at their best. That should be a sight. Also opening night with the Celtics vs. the Cavs. :)

In fairness, he had a really good year. The only problem was that a lot of it had to do with the style of Eddie Jordan's free flowing offense. It created easy shot opportunities for him. He's a fairly good mid-range shooter.
When he went to Cleavland, he encountered a team that runs its entire offense through Lebron and looks helpless and anemic when he was not in there. Hughes isn't the guy who consistently creates off of the dribble. . . . unless you want to
A - have him start the streaky slumps
B - have him get some freak injury he's known to have . . . annually
C - give the other team a chance, since he's a good defensive player who refuses to be efficient offensively and play team defense . . .at the same time.:csad:

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — For the third consecutive season, Cavaliers forward LeBron James was predicted by the league’s general managers to win the Most Valuable Player award in an NBA.com (http://nba.com/) survey.
James garnered 56 percent of the votes by the GMs. Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, the reigning MVP, finished second in the balloting with 37 percent of the vote, followed by Hornets guard Chris Paul with 7 percent.
The GMs also picked James as the best small forward in the league.
The Lakers were selected to defeat Boston for the NBA championship.

Shaun Livingston made it back on the court tonight. 5 points and a few assits in garbage time. Good for him considering many people thought he was done for good.
Im Glad he's finally back on the court. I wish nothing for the best for him even though he's not a clipper anymore...

Isiah Thomas hospitalized after sleeping pill overdose

PURCHASE — Former New York Knicks coach and NBA legend Isiah Thomas has been admitted to White Plains Hospital after taking an overdose of prescription sleeping pills, police said yesterday.
An ambulance crew went to Thomas’ Purchase home early this morning on what a police radio report indicated was a possible overdose.
Harrison Police Chief David Hall refused to discuss details the case, saying only that his officers did respond to Thomas’ home, but another police source told LoHud.com and The Journal News that Thomas has in fact been admitted to the hospital.
“I’m not going to confirm or deny this,” Hall said. “Were we there? Yes. But I’m not going to tell you who it is. The person in question apparently took too many sleeping pills and was taken to the hospital. That’s all I’m going to say about it.”
The call came in just after midnight. A police dispatcher mentioned a 46-year-old male at the Azalea Circle home. Thomas is 47.
A woman who answered an intercom at his Purchase home today refused to comment on Thomas’ well-being, whereabouts or anything else.
“Isiah Thomas spoke with members of the New York Knicks organization and is OK,” the team said in a statement. “He is dealing with a family matter and we will have no further comment. He has asked that we respect his privacy, and we will.”
The Knicks played their final preseason game last night at Madison Square Garden, but players and team officials there had little more to offer.
“He has spoken to some people, I don’t even know who they are, and basically, he has some kind of a family issue, and he’s asked that we respect their privacy which I intend to do,” said Donnie Walsh, who succeeded Thomas as team president. “But I have not spoken to him directly. I don’t know anything about anything other than what I’m hearing around the building. That’s it.”
New coach Mike D’Antoni said he doesn’t know Thomas well but was surprised by the news and wishes Thomas well.
Knicks guard Jamal Crawford also was taken aback.
“It came out of left field but I don’t really know enough about it to really get into it,” Crawford said. “I just hope him and his family are OK.”
One neighbor in the quiet, upscale Purchase neighborhood, where Thomas purchased a home for $4.075 million in 2004, said she was asleep and heard nothing. Attempts to speak to other neighbors were unsuccessful.
Thomas was hired as team president on Dec. 22, 2003 and immediately began making drastic roster changes, increasing the league’s heftiest payroll. None of the moves restored credibility, and the Knicks never won more than 39 games during his four seasons in charge.
He was responsible for acquiring controversial playmaker Stephon Marbury and mercurial coach Larry Brown. Both moves backfired famously.
Thomas was ordered to the sidelines by Knicks owner James Dolan after the 2004-05 season, and compiled a 56-108 record as coach.
As training camp was opening last October, a jury found Thomas and Madison Square Garden sexually harassed former Madison Square Garden marketing executive Anucha Brown Sanders. The issue was settled for $11.5 million three months later.
Last season, the Knicks began 2-1, but a feud between Thomas and Marbury contributed to an eight-game losing streak. The organization never recovered. After the Knicks went 23-59, Thomas was replaced by Walsh as team president and D’Antoni as coach.
He’s under contract for three more seasons and is owed $18 million.
Thomas continues to work for the Knicks as a consultant. He spent time in Europe in the spring scouting, but has not had any contact with the current players or coaches.

I think we'll do a lot better than what people are expecting. I don't think we'll miss the playoffs altogether though. But it's possible we could be one of those late entries like we were last year. However, I think under Carlisle it'll take some time for us to adjust to his new system and I believe we'll see improvement since we've had a training camp with Kidd running he offense.
Overall I'm optimistic but I am going to be realistic. I'd love for us to make it to the championship and I'm rooting for us, but it's going to take time and we're not going to see massive improvement over night.

I agree. I think the two teams that will come out of the West will be Lakers and Hornets, and I don't think Spurs (who is getting longer in the tooth) will be able to compete down the stretch against the younger Los Angeles and New Orleans teams. As for the East, Celtics is certainly the favorite, since LeBron can't do it by himself even if he has a monster year.

They think adding Ben Wallace, Delonte West, and Wally Sczerbiak is going to help relieve that pressure from him but it doesn't. They're inconsistent and can't be relied on when it comes to making shots, making plays, and so forth.

KG had an off shooting night as well. I don't think Ray Allen is washed up, if anything he's always been streaky at best. Yet when he gets hot he's impossible to stop and he can definitely be utilized with Boston still.
As for Rondo? He has a bright future ahead of him. If he get play under control, cut down the turnovers, and learn to control himself when he's looking to pass or drive to the lane he'll be a dangerous player. I like Rondo because he hustles, he's quick, plays pretty good defense, and there's no quit in him. To me he's like a young Wade and I'd love to see them go at it this year.

the lakers played surprisingly great defense, but i can't tell if it'll last, especially with the blazers looking so poor (overrated by everyone in the pre-season?); i think it's clear though the lakers are the class of the west with probably the rockets and maybe hornets.

i don't see the celtics being challenged for the eastern crown by anyone outside the 76ers in the east. the cavs are overrated (being picked to the win finals by some on espn? please!) and lbj is still too one dimensional offensively (no outside shot, terrible free throws).

The Bulls pick up a nice win, but it was against the Bucks sooo....yeah. Boston up next that there is the test. So far liking what I see. I think Miami, & Chicago are going to surprise people this year.

Are you talking about the Cavaliers who went to the finals in '06 and the Cavaliers that took the soon to be NBA champions to 7 games in the Conference Semifinals? For LeBron James to carry the Cavs that far with the cast and support he has his remarkable. They're not a spectacular team, but they still have the capability of making it deep in the playoffs.
Who picked them to win the finals? I've only seen people saying they will make the finals, not win it.

Bill Simmons. Which is shocking since he is such a homer. I would have figured he was tasking the Celts all the way. But he may just be trying not to jinx them. He's like that.

They said Oden was limping during the game against the Lakers. I wonder if it's just in his head and he's afraid of injuring the knee again? I hope it's not too serious for him.
I wonder why the knee would be bothering him still though? He had all season to rehab it and rest it. Hopefully he didn't mess it up during practice or something.

I don't think it's fair to call Oden a bust. This is his actual first NBA game and it's going to take him awhile to adjust to being a professional. Even Yao struggled during his first and second year, he didn't start maturing and playing better until the third and fourth year of his career.
It's wise to give Oden time and let him adjust.

And tonight begins the Oklahoma City Thunder.........
They better be a much improved team by year three, or else Kevin Durant will be looking for a way out of Oklahoma City. All they need to do by 2010-2011 is to either improve or win, and Durant stays. If they are still terrible by that time, Durant will want out of there, and Oklahoma City becomes another Memphis.
The size of the NBA market doesn't matter as long as you win. Look at Chris Paul and Deron Williams. They both signed extensions with New Orleans and Utah respectively, because both teams are winning. San Antonio is also a perfect example of this.
All The Thunder needs to do is to win by year three. The first two years can be a transition period, in that it's okay to be terrible, but in year two, they need to show slight improvement from year one. They win in year three, Durant will more then likely do what Paul and Williams have done and sign an extension to stay.
Those jerseys may be ugly and the logo may be awful, but if they start winning by 2010-2011, none of that is going to matter.

Lakers is off to a good start, and I think they played last night's game with a chip on their shoulders. Probably due to all the criticisms of them being soft against the Celts in the Finals.

I don't :cmad:
Crawford was ridiculous in the 1st quarter. Miami's rebounded surprisingly well and having Haslem start at center hasn't been as big of an issue as it will be against other teams.

Aside from a few forced outside shots, Beasley didn't look bad in the first half. However, in the second half, he might as well have been invisible.
Chalmers was more than a surprise. I hope he learns to take more control of the offense as the season goes. Too much all-around freewheeling out there.
Good grief, the defense was bad. I'm still trying to figure out why no one bothers with that Crawford guy when these teams play.
Marbury is such a crab. When the Knicks were icing the game at the line, he was standing alongside other players who were cheering with his arms folded and an entirely disinterested look on his face. That shot has got to pop up in someone's blog tomorrow. :down

Another impressive win by the Lakers. Even though Clippers might not turn out to be an elite team and there were without Marcus Camby, Lakers' defense came through again by limiting Clips to 38% shooting. Right now Odom comes off the bench and that really strengthen their 2nd unit, and makes Lakers a much deeper team. It's a long season but I'm very optimistic about this Lakers team, and I hope they will stay healthy throughout the season.

Report: Bynum agrees to four-year extension worth $58 million (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3673083)
The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension with center Andrew Bynum worth about $58 million, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
The deal would keep Bynum under contract with the Lakers through the 2012-13 season, according to the report. The first three years of the deal are reportedly worth nearly $42 million, with a team option fourth year for about $16 million.
Bynum, who will earn $2.8 million this season, showed significant improvement for the Lakers in 2007-08 before being lost for about half of the season and the playoffs to an injury. His healthy return is one reason many observers are touting the Lakers as a favorite to return to the NBA Finals and win the championship.

Dallas seems to playing very well under Carlisle. We're down by 3 against Houston and I'm going to say that this game will down to the wire tonight. It's also nice to see Nowitzki, Howard, and Terry drive more rather than relying on jump shots.
Although there was an instance where Dirk was close enough to dunk it and chose to try and lay it in. But overall I'm liking what I see from Dallas at the moment.
Artest is going to help Houston in a major way too. He provides another scoring option and he's a defensive pest, which will help Houston's team defense and he'll be a huge help if he keeps his head on straight and they go into the playoffs. A defensive presence like him was missed whenever Houston made it to the playoffs.
Yao's playing better and better. It's only a matter of time before he has a breakout year too.
