I just wanna say how refreshing it is to see a prominent African American supervillain. Most human supervillains, from the X-Men's rogues to Batman's have been caucasian. The Batman reinvented Clayface with Ethan Bennet; you're typical green-eyed black man who would go on to sPend most of his screen time as an amorphous gray blob. Then, for little reason, they found a way to return him to normal and give his powers to a white dude. What the hell?
There were also a few on the earlier, more progressive series "Static Shock" including one who could turn into shadowy dark matter, one who could elongate himself and a Jamaican with powerful leg muscles. Now, it has been suggested that these powers just played off of black stereotypes, but that was really the last thing that came to mind as I saw Static fight crime and crack jokes with his brilliant whitebread partner.
Well, it's been a long road but we finally come to Tombstone. Sure, his complexion's whiter than chalkdust, his teeth are filed down like a cannibal's and his body guards look like rejects from an exploitation flick BUT isn't that progress? In a weird backwards way, I mean?
That Tombstone is one bad mother.

Tombstone is so badass! I really liked his original appearance, but they added more to him in this show and made him much more awesome! So, I'm really looking foward to him returning in season 2 nad being involved in the "Gang War".

They gave Tombstone a Mr. Freeze style revamp. That should be enough incentive to love the character.

According to Wiki, he was originally voiced by Kieth David but then they got The Batman's Joker, Kevin Michael Richardson to do it. So if you ever need a guy to voice albino...

yea big man aka ssm tombstone that we are lead to believe(i would like if it ends up being foswell down the road as big man) Greg said in an interview or that podcast kieth was hired in episode one but then was cast in some theater thing in nyc and wasnt able to go back and forth from nyc to la were they record the show so he was replaced.

I just love when they take a minor character from the comics and transform him or her into a major role that fits into the overall scheme of the show. It was a brilliant way to use this character. No Kingpin, no problem. Tombstone was the next best thing and they have made me a fan of him.

I wonder how he does with the ladies...
Don Yoyo
06-21-2008, 08:40 AM
You could think that his appearance (the theeth especially) might give him problems with the ladies... even I would be only mildly surprised if Tombstone turned out to be married with one or two children :woot: With them visiting him one day when Peter (as Spider-Man) is in his office with the usual "threats" :cwink:
Another thing : what do you think Tombstone was working on when Spidey came in his office in Nature VS Nurture? Some anti-Spidey project perharps? Or is he writing something about him? Or is it attempting to get the rights for the exploitation of Spider-Man's image, like the Kingpin had in Ultimate Spider-Man?

You know what? If Sam Raimi decides he wants to introduce a crime boss into the movie series, and what with Kingpin tied up at FOX, i can see Tombstone stepping in quite nicely, especially with his ties to the Joe Robertson character...

In the Gang War, I wonder how much butt Tombstone will kick? If you ask me, I think he'll be taking on alot of guys, depending on which Gang War they're using.
Don Yoyo
06-21-2008, 03:56 PM
Hum, if Tombstone has to kick butts himself, then it should mean that things are going very badly for him  If Gang War there is and that Tombstone's concurrent has super-powered people under him, the Big Man will need more firepower than what he already has... I definitely think that Ox and Fancy Dan are gonna receive some improvements in season 2, just like their leader, Montana. Preferably something to increase even more their "natural" skills and abilities : agility, speed and reflexes for Fancy Dan, brute strength and endurance for Ox.

Its possible or gang war will be about other mob characters rising to more power. We will just have to wait and see where they go with the gang war storyline they are going to do.

Indeed, and if they do go with a fighting Gang War, then I think it would be so cool to have Ock, Hammerhead, and Big Man involved. Ock and Hammerhead had quite a few confrontations in the comics.

Yea my guess if they have the rose they probably cant use the richard fisk version cause kingpin is offlimits and i would think then his whole family would be too. So they likely would have to use one of the other people who used the rose identity.

That Tombstone is one bad mother.
Tombstone was a character that I hated. a lot, because of the 90's series. I just couldn't see that character on screen.
but SSM made it for me. I love every frickin second with Tombstone in it. his experience, his acts, his badasseness and specially his voice. it all makes him so damn awesome.
Spectacular Tombstone is one of my favorites, now.

I agree. I did like him in the 90's series, but he has a lot more better character now. It's also cool that they made him literally the "Big Man". In the 90's, Kingpin was always the big man character, I like this change, it's different, and it feels good. I still hope Kingpin comes in somewhere, it'd work for the whole "gang war" idea.

No problem. Still, Tombstone is cool, but I have one question (take in mind I've never really followed him in the comics) but what's with Tombstone being grey? I know the sense out of it (grey like a tombstone) but wasn't he always normal?

In the comics, I understood he is a black albinos, so a really milk-white skin. And the pointed teeth, he made them himself to scare his foes (he was working as an enforcer).
In SSM, I suspect he is a mutant, with a mixture of mutations both "real" (being an albinos) and "comic" (super strength, speed and reflexes, with an uncanny resistance to physical damage... and the pointed teeth).
Speaking of Tombstone, I really like how he can defend himself when he;s about to get hurt. He's not afraid to kick some butt.
I think that's why Hammerhead respects him so much, because he is a leader but can still defend himself if the need arises (I think any of his foes would think that being the head, all wealthy and out of the field, Tombstone is weak... big mistake! Just the one Spider-Man did).

I'm going by memory, so forgive if I mess up a few lines, but the conversation went mostly like this:
Hammerhead: Goblin. I know you're out there.
Goblin: Out there! In here! Everywhere! This will soon be my town Hammy and I could use a good right-hand flattop.
Hammerhead: Not gonna happen. You think I'm afraid of some goofball dressed for Halloween? Can't be afraid of whatcha don't respect and I've only respect one man enough to fear.
Goblin: The Big Man! Alias: L. Thompson Lincoln! See I've already peeked under his mask.
Hammerhead: Lincoln is the mask! The Big Man's Tombstone cause that's all that's left when you cross him.
Goblin: Well if that's true, then a man like you must surely have acquired...LIFE INSURANCE!

Wow, you're right on it... I mean I wouldn't have expected it since Tombstone risked his life to save Hammerhead (or atleast the portable jump drive that has evidence of what he really does that Gobby made up)
I must retread what has been said already, it is so nice to see a black villain who is more than some hired muscle. Most of Spidey's rouges are Caucasian males (in the 60's it would have probably have been a bad idea to make them anything else, so does make sense). A lot of Static's villains were black, but a majority of them were just superpowered street thugs. So it is exciting to see such a change in status of villainy. Plus, his Mr. Freeze style revamp is so good I was hoping that they would play against the comics for once and Foswell wasn't the Big Man. It's not everyday you see an black albino crime boss. By the looks of it Molten Man (Mark Allan [Raxton in comics]) is going to be Puerto Rican. I really want to see how Mr. Lincoln's empire will crumble with the upcomming gang war. I loved everytime he appeared on screen...his first confrontation with Spidey was so cool...Lonnie's kind of quick...
Once again, sorry to bump such an old topic...
