AFI’s 100 Heroes and Villains Battle Tournament

The Hype crowned The Shawshank Redemption the greatest American film of the last 100 years. Now it is time to find the greatest hero and villain from film. Kindly Atticus Finch and the evil and twisted Hannibal Lecter hold the top spots on thier respective lists. Can they hold on, or will Hype favourites from some of the biggest blockbuster films of all time knock the two down? Or will an unexpected hero and villain reign supreme? Only this battle will tell!

The heroes and villians will face off in their respective groups. The lowest seeded hero/villian will face the highest seeded hero/villian, and this will continue throughout the tournament. In the case of odd numbered rounds, a three way battle will take place between the three lowest seeded heroes/villains. When the Hype's Greatest Hero and Villian are decided they will face off in a battle to determine who the greatest one is.

Updated scores will appear in this post throughout the duration of the tournament. Please check here to see how your favourite characters are faring.

RULES

Players may vote once per individual battle
The winning film will be determined by having at least 8 votes with a margin of victory of 2 within a 72 hour period (from the beginning of the battle)
If there is no clear winner by the end of the 72 hour period, a sudden death match will be announced. Once sudden death is announced by either War Party or myself, the first three votes in will determine the winner. All players are open to vote in sudden death even if they have voted already in the battle except the organizers and those mentioned in rule #4
To make sure no one creates accounts to throw the tourney, you may only participate in this tournament if you have at least 50 posts OR have been registered at the Hype for at least a week. Players who do not meet these requirements will not have their votes counted.
The organizers of this tournament reserve the right to tweak the rules when there is need.Lastly we would like to remind you all to play respectfully. This should be a really fun tournament with some heated battles.

Good luck!

While I guess I understand the cultural value and significance of Finch's character, it's not like he lost out to an unworthy opponent. I mean, after all, Maximus is the main character of a 5-Oscar winning film (including Best Picture).

Well To Kill a Mocking Bird had serious competition with Lawrence of Arabia but Peck still walked away with best Actor on what is probably one of the greatest fictional characters ever. Gladiator had no where near that kind of competition.

Atticus Finch will always be number one hero. Lets face it, Maximus won because he was good with a sword.

They are similarities & Joss Whedon has noted those but he didn't base his character on Han Solo, & anyway Capt.Mal is 10x cooler & is the side of Han Solo you never see in Star Wars (the small time smuggling, etc) & don't get me started on depth for no matter how good Star Wars is (which is very) honestly it doesn't really have much character depth or not in Han Solo's character anyway but that's just my opinion.

Eh, I watched Serenity and I wasn't overly impressed by Captain Malcom. I almost felt he was a poor man's Han Solo. And I felt Empire gave a lot of character depth to the main characters.

You really need to see the tv show Firefly if you haven't already, I saw Serenity & thought it was refreshing & very good but when I saw Firefly you realize how much better it is than Serenity & the characters are so rich & hot (the girls anyway:D) & unique.

Eh, I liked Angel, Buffy, etc. But I never understood the "Whedon" worship. Especially his recurring themes, let's put a strong powered female in this one, and someone of a different sexual orientation, or and let's say in 20 words what we can say in 5 words.

Yeah, his stuff is entertaining, I'm just not overly moved by his work.

Personally I haven't seen more than 15 episodes of Buffy or Angel, I only worship him for Firefly/Serenity I just don't see Buffy or Angel as being that interesting, Vampire slaying no thanks, Sci-fi Western which isn't about blowing up **** YES PLEASE, maybe one day I'll watch'em but for now my only obsessions lie in Batman, Firefly/Serenity, & Summer Glau :D
