Any news about the possibility of a third Batman movie is good news!

Considering he's more than likely going to do the screen story like he did with TDK, I sure bloody hope he knows the theme for it. :o

What I found interesting about this was Goyer said he is more interested in the theme of the next film than the actual villain. With any luck that means the next film will once again turn the focus to Batman. Don't get me wrong, I love TDK, and love that they made it more an ensemble piece. But in my opinion the only character more capable of topping the Joker is Batman.

I wonder if this theme/villain is based on the original outline they had back in 2005.

redemption will be the theme I'll bet.

I have faith in what Goyer and Nolan are doing. This franchise has the potential to be one of the only good trilogies. Just end it there though.:brucebat:Redemption is a theme I'd like to see. The events in TDK could really lead to that.

...so he "knows" but he doesn't tell us, that means nothing at all. It's just up in the air right now.

Good. Goyer says they've already talked about a sequel. And they have a theme and villain in mind.

Now I know when Nolan continues to say he isn't thinking about another sequel he's obviously lying.

Not necessarily. I talked about preparing for college in my freshman year of high school; I didn't do any actual thinking about it until two years later. Just because they have idea now doesn't mean that's he's at all concerned with working on it for a long time and that idea might get scrapped immediately when they start doing real work towards the film.

Would be cool to have it as a trilogy and then let it cool off instead of running it into the ground again like the original movies, like Superman and possibly like Spider-man.

TDK's theme was known by the end of Begins, so I don't understand why it's such a big deal. It's either there already for us to take notice of in TDK or they are being big teases.

EXCLUSIVE: David Goyer Says He Knows The Theme For ‘Batman 3’ (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/07/21/exclusive-david-goyer-says-he-knows-the-theme-for-batman-3/)

Whether you agree or not, judging from both fan reaction and near universal critical acclaim, “The Dark Knight” will almost certainly go down as the greatest comic book movie of all-time, with a performance from Heath Ledger that is being hailed as one of the greatest on-screen villains ever.

Now all Christopher Nolan, his brother Jonathan, David Goyer, and an as yet unnamed villain have to do is top it.

“I think that’s the scariest thing – to think, could we come up with a third movie that was as good as the first two? Can we top ourselves?” screenwriter David Goyer asked aloud, almost rhetorically, in a recent conversation with MTV News. “Doing it a third time would be a big proposition.”

Make no mistake about it, though, a third film HAS been discussed, Goyer confessed, revealing that, while nothing is concrete, both a villain and a theme have been bandied about.

“We’ve only talked loosely about it, though, Chris and I,” Goyer said.

Interestingly, it’s the theme, and not the villain, that most interests me, especially given how the latter seems inexorably tied to the former in this new modern Batman universe. (Fear the predominant issue in “Begins” precipitating the introduction of Scarecrow, escalation in “Knight” similarly calling for The Joker.

The fact that Goyer has a theme he wants to keep in mind for a possible “Batman 3” means he also has a direction, a crisis, and, yes, a villain.

So what is it?

“I have one,” Goyer said laughing. “But I’m not going to tell you. Chris is very particular about that.

“I do think, though, that if there’s not a third film – these two movies stand on their own,” he added. “I think it could go either way.”

I wonder when we'll get official word on the third one happening or not.

I wouldn't expect him to give out all the details this early. They could still be negotiating a villian . Goyer might have a different opinion than Nolan.

When filming wrapped up for TDK, Michael Caine said jokingly to Nolan "Great that was fun! What's the next one going to be like?" And very seriously, Nolan replied "Darker. Much Darker."

As much as I'd like to take your word for it...do you have a link?

I think the title will be Batman: Redemption, or Redemption of the Dark Knight.

Something like that. Not Shadow of the Bat.

The villain is going to be The Condiment King as the theme of the film is going be about what it takes to make a sandwich taste right. Even ask Johnny Drama and Ratatat.

Goyer gave us a hint:

"Interestingly, it’s the theme, and not the villain, that most interests me, especially given how the latter seems inexorably tied to the former in this new modern Batman universe. (Fear the predominant issue in “Begins” precipitating the introduction of Scarecrow, escalation in “Knight” similarly calling for The Joker."

It's a vague hint, but a hint. He said the villain will be tied to the theme, fear is predominant in Begins and Scarecrow uses fear, escalation is the theme of TDK and the Joker uses it or is created by it, and obviously we can guess that the theme for Batman 3 will be redemption. So which villain would tie into this idea of redemption? If it turns out Two-face isn't dead maybe his redemption will tie in with Batman's redemption. So maybe he is the villain. It could be someone else, though, because I don't know all of Batman's villains. It could also be someone who would lead to Batman's redemption. So whoever it is will tie into this redemption idea probably.

We are years away from having a finalized batman 3 script, anything that's been discussed at this point can disappear in a moment's notice. Goyer is probably just trying to build the hype machine that will create more buzz to get people to see TDK and look forward to another movie. This "interview" didn't really tell us THAT much which we didn't know already.

Well, hopefully this movie will be out in 3 years so at the most a script will be 1 to 2 years away. I don't want them to rush it, but they spent 3 years making TDK, and it turned out great so 3 years should be enough for Batman 3.

I have a feeling that the 3rd film will disappointing. In their efforts to top TDK they will make some irrational decision. Something maybe along the lines of Batman unmasking himself in public for a greater good. It may be heroic, but it will come off as really forced and way over the top. I just hope Nolan stays for one more and finds the right inspirations.

Considering the only mentioned fear once in TDK and nobody even talked about the Waynes, I doubt they're going to retread the "Batman unmasked" subplot.
