Johns has been hinting that he'll get around to it in JSA for a while. It looks like her origin may tie into Gemworld and other magical stuff now, but while Atlan may have raised her, his relationship to her is not what she thought it was. It's pretty confusing right now but Johns'll get to it eventually. He likes to foreshadow way in advance and leave things on the back burner before he suddenly devotes a 3-issue arc to it.

Power Girl's origin will be based on a panel back in a Superman comic back in the 60's and it'll involve some 5th rate loser villian that hasn't been used for years. I may like his writing, but it's distinct.

In All-Star Comics #58 that decision was made :p
I also think they should just stick with the Kryptonian origin. Everything else feels like B.S.

Sothat would make her a leftover from pre-Crisis Earth-2? So what? That's what she is. At least that way they'd throw pre-Crisis fans a bone.

Here's what I was told on another forum by a guy who seemed to know what he was talking about...

Wally Wood was PG's original artist, back in the mid-70s when he was picking up a regular paycheck from DC for doing comics like the short revival of All-Star. For his own amusement, every time he drew Power Girl he made her breasts larger, waiting for the day an editor would tell him to stop, but they never did. (Whether it's because they liked the art or just weren't paying attention is a matter of conjecture.) He was pretty unhappy personally (and sick, IIRC) at the time, and wound up committing suicide in 1981. Ever since, the other artists at DC have carried on the tradition of making her the bustiest heroine in mainstream comics. Just your daily comics trivia factoid.dw

The best part is whenever someone in the comics makes a remark, and she gets all offended/it goes completely over her head.

She wears a costume on which, at the spot where every other hero says "Here is where I will place the symbol that will forever define and identify me to the public at large," she has a big ol' titty-window, and then she's like, "what? You mean people are noticing my boobies? Preposterous!"

There's noticing, there's staring and then there's ogling. I think that PG is subject to the latter two more than anything and it's why she reacts the way she does.

I'm saying that her proportions, plus her costume, ( A highcut Unitard with no underware underneath and a large hole exposing her breasts.), plus her inability to understand why Hetro MEN react to having that much female flying around,

Would in the normal world we live in produce a LOT of men willing to risk death and dismemberment to lay at least a hand on her.

Also in our world,.. have enough men unable to look at her above her neck,.. AND MOST WOMEN would change what they were wearing.

Sorry,..
You caught the tail end of a feeling generated by an argument I had with a woman who wanted to know why men can't talk to her face when she wears her "justifiable Rape" clothing?

**** or blouse with no bra, Thong and a short short skirt, all on hose and highheels.

She can silence every man in the room either in waves, (She walks past a group,.. they stop and stare,..), or all at once, (Dropped a pencil and bent at the waist to pick it up.)

The argument ended badly,.. I called her a tease that wants to get men hot and bothered w/o paying the concequences.

What else, in Virtue and Vice she was taken over buy the deadly sin Lust and gave Supes a tounge bath. So,... She shares Superman's vulnerability to Magic?

TheCorpulent1
12-27-2004, 02:50 PM
It's not so much a vulnerability to magic as it is a vulnerability to the specifics of that magic. Crimson Avenger's guns never miss and can penetrate anything. They're tools of vengeance or something. So if you lined up Power Girl, Supergirl, Superboy, and Superman all in a line and fired one of the Crimson Avenger's bullets at them, it'd cut through all of them like butter. Super-durability just doesn't apply to the gun's enchantment.

Some super-strong, super-durable biker dude had a crush on her in JSA. They fought and he kept asking her out and saying she could use a man like him and he worships her, etc. Then she kicked his ass and flew away and he went back to the drawing board to get stronger and tougher to impress her the next time. That was kind of a funny issue. :)

3. Did her uniform make it thru the fight, (She apparently doesn't have the forcefield thing going for her like Superman.)
Any pictures of THAT fight on the hype somewhere?
1. It was pretty easy. The guy was barely even fighting her, he just wanted to impress her.
2. The guy attacked her at a press conference she was giving by herself, if I remember correctly. The fight didn't seem to take that long.
3. Her uniform didn't make it through completely. Her cape was torn off and I think a sleeve was gone by the end of it.

No pictures that I know of, but I'll see if I can find the comic in a week or so, when I'm reunited with my comics. :)

That was actually a really badass fight, so all of the, uh, comedy in it. The crane... :D

http://www.superherohype.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=470 She recently got shot up pretty bad by the new Crimson Avenger along with Wild Cat. Magic guns and all. Wild Cat lost about 4 lives in that fight. What else, in Virtue and Vice she was taken over buy the deadly sin Lust and gave Supes a tounge bath. And her Atlantian origins have been thrown out the window and now we have no idea were she comes from. Again. Other than that she's just been a good little soldier with the JSA.

Depending on the artist and the cut of the costume,.. PG wears underwear or not,.. you'll NEVER see a cameltoe in a comic even though it's almost impossible for a woman to wear what she does w/o drawls and not show such.

I think it makes women too uncomfortable to have such pointed out and it would be yet another reason for her to change her costume to a big burlap sack.

Maybe because it looks like Power Girl and the rest of the JSA are about to throw down for no good reason? I like Amanda Conner's art. It's cartoony and fun, but she still manages to put some good detail into her facial expressions. Kevin Maguire she is not, but she's still got more expression in those faces than most comic artists put.

PS: Is it just me or does it look like Power Girl's wearing tighty-whiteys?

Tropico
04-19-2005, 10:02 PM
They look like they're about to throw up. Look at Hawkgirl's posture, it looks like she's going to fall from one moment to another. And those ARE tighty-whiteys, WILDCAT'S tighty-whitey's; that's why he's so angry. And, I love PG (look at my avatar), but it looks like her eyes are rolling up into her head instead of looking up to us because of the perspective.

TheCorpulent1
04-19-2005, 10:20 PM
I think Hawkgirl's posture is fine, considering she's visibly struggling to hold people back while they push against her. Power Girl's eyes are focused a little too high, but I don't really mind that. The rest of her face more than makes up for it with its expressiveness. Dr. Mid-Nite's expressions in the preview page at Newsarama are even better. Exaggerated, but still capable of conveying what they need to. I like it.

Whoa! Chill! This is a riff Corp and I have, don't read too much into it. I like PG's character a lot IN SPITE of the way she's drawn. A lot of people, and writers, don't get the character; hence the stupid way that she's portrayed occassionally. In an issue of JSA she explains why she's the way that she is in regards to asserting herself and looking the way she does. The character gets what a lot of women like that go through, she looks like that and dresses that way so she MUST be a slut and an air head; shows how shallow ans insecure a lot people can be. That's what I like about the character, she's not what she looks like. My avatar is intentional in pointing out the only thing readers (including female readers) see about the character, which is a shame.

Born into the Asgardian gods, Amora studied under the mighty sorceress Karnilla, who ultimately expelled her for being too undisciplined. Amora went on to study under many other Asgardian mages, often seducing them to learn their secrets. By the time she reached adulthood, Amora was a powerful sorceress, famous for her beauty and infamous for her heartless scheming. An early alliance with the warrior goddess Brunnhilde the Valkyrie ended with Amora trapping Brunnhilde's soul, using the Valkyrie's vacated form as a shell for herself and various pawns to inhabit over the centuries that followed. Brunnhilde would eventually return, becoming one of Amora's bitterest enemies.

Amora's longest-serving pawn was Skurge, the Executioner. Skurge was madly in love with Amora, who granted him just enough affection to ensure his loyalty. The two pursued many schemes together, often coming into conflict with the thunder god Thor and his mortal comrades, the Avengers. When Skurge eventually sacrificed his life aiding Thor in an heroic rescue mission. Amora mourned him with a genuine grief that surprised everyone, including the Enchantress herself.

Pardoned in recent years after helping defend Asgard against Surtur, Amora has had an on-and-off romantic link with her longtime foe Thor, to whom she was drawn even more strongly after he inherited the throne of Asgard. As Thor's ally, advisor and sometime lover, Amora has been a prominent figure in Thor's Asgard. Sadly, Amora was among the many Asgardians apparently slain when Thor's brother Loki led a revolt in fulfillment of the Ragnarok prophecies. Whether she will rise again remains to be seen.

And on that day, the comic gods nodded in approval.

Wally Wood's the MAN!

Check out the real origin of Power Girl.

From Joe Rubenstein:

"I was Wally Woods assistant when I was a kid. I have a signed and attached sealed diploma from the Wally Wood School of Comic Art and Applied Psychology. I helped "pencil" and ink the last two SALLY FORTH and CANNON strips. Woody told me that when he got the first layout pages of ALL STAR SQUADRON ( ? ),by the great Rick Estrada,Woody said "See this female character(P G)? I m going to make her breasts bigger each issue till someone says something and stops me." Issue # 10 some editor looked up and said " WHAAAT !!"

I don't have a scanner, but, shes like Captain Marvel. Just a kid who says the magic words and turns into a full grown, super powered, babe. But, just because she looks like she's an adult, doesn't mean she's an adult. Much like the whole Cap'n Marvel, Star Girl thing in JSA.

So Mary would be about 16. If they're not twins, I'd expect her to be about 14.

She has FOUR ORIGINS!!!!
Supermans Cousin

Atlantian Uber-Girl from the far Past

Supergurls Clone (TV only)

Superman's descendant from the 30th Century. (Which explains the power flucuation.)

She is part of a group of heroes who the writers can't make up their minds.

(smile)
That's why a lot of us talk about her,.. She's a contradiction.

Consider,...And try not to be offended:

Imagine if Superman wore a "bannana Sling", Wife beater Tshirt with a big red S on it with a cape that doubled as a pervs cloak?

Now imagine if he was "packing" in direct proportion to what Powergirl waves in the face of criminals.

How could a comic be read w/o a reader wondering how he can go through doors and windows without it getting caught,...
In the comics ANY woman who talked to him would have trouble keeping their eyes above his belly button,...

The female superhero/villian commuities would start making plans,.....

DC is unrealistic to say that a Boyscout like Supes, or a Moral supportist like Batman, or even a feminist like Wonderwoman wouldn't tell her to go put more clothes on.

sigh.

But yeah, I totally agree. I just figured I'd add my own words just because everybody else did. And it's the hip thing to do. But yeah, I know that if there was a character like that guy, there would sure be a lot more complaining. lol

But yeah, DC makes very...unbelievable characters, despite them already being extremely fictitious as they stand. No joke. The bustier just provides like NO protection. The only part of her normal costume that makes sense at all is the gauntlets. Calling the bikini part armor at all is just... Bleh...
