Hey guys.. I have been wondering to this day that there is no pics or any information much about the main baddie Cobra Commander. I would hope to see a pic of him in costume and hopefully they do him right like the raspy voice wearing the face mask of velvet and helmet. Is there any leads or anyone want to know more about him.

I don't think they'll start the real promotion for this film until November. That's when I can see us getting a glimpse of Cobra Commander.

I think Cobra Commander will be kept under wraps for a majority of the marketing very similar to Megatron when Transformers was being promoted.

I've heard
Cobra Comander is Rex, baroness's brother and Duke's best friend. He is a medic, and ends up getting scarred during a war, where Duke should be watching his back. Everyone thinks he's dead, but he continues alive, working for the MARS organization as ''The Doctor'' and slowly brainwashing everyone to serve to his plans. On the ending, he takes control of the organization, renames it as Cobra and becomes it's commander.

Read the exact same thing. There are a few sites out there that claim to have read the shooting script and have done some reviews.
It seems like Rex won't actually become Cobra Commander until the end of the film. He's pulling the strings of the group that the Joes battle but we don't find out who it is until the end. And even then, according to the scrip it's just him in a suit with the Cobra logo saying something like, 'Hail Cobra'. Doesn't put on the hood or the battle mask. Destro doesn't get the mask until the very end of the film, either.

But isnt that destros scottish clan mask? Does he just start wearing it out of spite of J.I. Joe? And wasnt Destro Just an arms dealers that was giving Cobra discounts because he was nailing the baroness ? But as long as they NEVER mention Cobra La ill be happy.

Don't be so quick my friend, apperently it is going to be an all new look for Cobra Commander
Heres the article :
We know Joseph Gordon-Levitt is excited for his role as Cobra Commander (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/06/20/joseph-gordon-levitt-flips-out-over-gi-joe/) in “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra,” but just what exactly can we expect from his take on the iconic character? While viewers of the cartoon know the figure as a more whimsical evildoer, fans of the comic — used to a bombastic terrorist who entombed his own son — are feverishly hoping their version of the Cobra leader is the one that makes it on-screen. Thankfully, it sounds like they’ll get their wish.
“As we see it, he’s a very twisted character,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/07/25/snake-eyes-to-stay-silent-for-gi-joe-movie-promises-films-producer/) exclaimed to MTV News, telling us the key to Cobra Commander lies in his gritty past…and that we’ll see every grimy piece of it. “As the backstory evolves, you discover why his personality .”
While stopping short of drawing parallels between Gordon-Levitt’s PG-13 villain and that of Heath Ledger’s terrifying Joker, di Bonaventura does find one noteworthy comparison. “I thought what was great in ‘The Dark Knight’ was that Heath kept telling you different stories [about his past] so you never knew what it was, and they were all spooky and crazy. [In our film] you get to see it, and you get to understand what’s happened to this guy.”
While the film will draw from the comics for inspiration, di Bonaventura revealed that there’s one aspect from the cartoon that [I]will carry over…the character’s unique voice. While it won’t exactly match the classic high-pitched wail from the show, the producer says Gordon-Levitt will leave his own vocal stamp on Cobra Commander. “He has an interesting voice. He definitely has a take-off on that. I actually found the voice a little weak in the show…I’m sure I’ll get killed for saying that. I don’t know, it always seemed kind of silly. Hopefully we’re going to be a little more menacing.”
And while the character is widely known for his blue mask, don’t expect that to necessarily carry over in whole either. “We’ll see Cobra Commander in the Cobra mask [but] it will not be like the show,” said di Bonaventura, who also promised they aren’t going to the comics for that one either. “I found some of the [mask] aspects a little KKK for me,” he said, “so we tried to steer away from that image. We thought that might be a little much.”
See? No faceplate like the cartoon and no hood like the comics = B.S.!

The whole KKK thing to me is ridiculous, but I guess in today's world there would be some DA that would try to make a connection of it.
But at least if you aren't going to use the hood use the faceplate from the cartoon, which is very cool and something that hasn't really been done with a villain in film that I recall.
Hopefully the changes will be cool and close enough to his counterparts to please

I've always preferred the hood, though why I've never been entirely certain. However, regarding the KKK connections, I can sort of see where they are coming from. That said, what I don't see is the hangup about using it. As I'm not American, I might be missing something but wasn't the KKK getup used in its entirety in Bad Boys 2? Plus, wouldn't making Cobra Commander less likable and a tad bit more offensive be a good thing? I mean, he's the main villain after all.

To quote JGL in his article from IGN:
Gordon-Levitt said fans shouldn't expect the character's voice or costume to be exactly like the comics or cartoon versions. "I think it maintains the spirit of it and all the fun, but it brings the character into three dimensions," he said. "It wouldn't look good if you did an exact replica of the cartoon. You wouldn't want me wearing a skin-tight bright-blue dictator's uniform. It would look silly."
http://movies.ign.com/articles/909/909139p1.html
I don't know why anyone would actually expect the costume to look anything like the cartoon or comics. The only costume in this entire movie that remotely resembles the comics is Snake Eyes, and maybe Baroness. Out of the whole cast?? Why would you think CC would be any different, especially when all the interviews are saying how "different" he looks?
tamron
09-11-2008, 06:38 PM
The classic CC uni is realistic enough. It's just a blue German officer's uniform with a hood on his head.
http://www.sutlers.co.uk/acatalog/Wermacht-General.jpg
I don't see how that's any sillier than those suits they've got the Joes wearing. But whatever. They wanna change it, fine. I'm not really mad about the change, but don't say it's because the costume is unrealistic. However, somthing tells me I will disappointed in what they change him to, with them emphasizing CC turning into a "creature."

No hood or face shield = :down
I was hoping we'd get both, but it turns out we're getting niether all because someone though the hood was too KKK-esque, and they apparently want as little to do with the cartoon as possible so that means no helmet. The KKK wears pointed, phallic hoods. Cobra Commander's hood is smooth and rounded off, closely fitting to the shape of his head. I don't get why peole have to get all politically correct over stuff so trivial-- but then again, "politically correct" has been the theme of this entire production, which sometimes makes me wonder why they even wanted to make a GI Joe movie in the first place.

Because they know that the GI Joe name, coupled with decent marketing, could allow them to turn a profit, regardless of the film's quality.

He doesn’t wear anything that would symbolize him as the COBRA COMMANDER WE KNOW.... He wears a face mask to cover up his scarred face which also gives him oxygen.... The last time you see him in the movie.. He tells Destro to call him COMMANDER... Destro then says, "Yes, Commander"... Destro does this also because he is now being controlled by the nano-mites which actually seem really cool....
Also, "THE DOCTOR" aka Cobra Commander's lines in the movie if they are st8 out of the script are really well written and remind me a lot of the way he talks in the cartoon. Like he says " AND FROM NOW ON I'll BE ON A FIRST NAME BASIS WITH YOU, DESTRO "
But he will not be in any uniform until the second one... This movie ends basically with what its called THE RISE OF COBRA, how the movie ends you will understand that Cobra Commander has the world by the balls....
Zartan isnt in the script a lot, but by the end plays a MAJOR role....

The studios are afraid to take chances. The excuses they give in interviews are bull. Kids and adults watched the cartoons, and I never heard one complaint about Cobra Commander's hood from anyone. So I don't know why they can't use it. The hood and face plate are trademarks of his. Terrorists nowadays wear hoods, and Cobra Commander is a terrorist who wears a hood. The whole KKK thing is an excuse not to use the hood because of politics, that's all. The KKK has nothing to do with it. Politics are always involved when it comes to Military films, or movies of the like.
It worries me that they say he doesn't wear anything that would symbolize him as the Cobra Commander we know. I really didn't want to hear that. It makes me wonder why even bother making a 'JOE' film, if the characters are unrecognizable as the JOES we know. I mean Ripcord's a black guy now, Breaker looks Arab, and no face plate or hood for Cobra Commander. Anybody else worried?
tamron
12-21-2008, 05:31 PM
Definitely worried. But Hasbro is all behind this. They want to update the property to appeal to younger kids, not pander to the RAH fans they already have in pocket. And it's not like it's the first time (Sigma 6). All I can hope at this point is that the movie will be true to G.I. Joe in spirit and tone if not in its storyline details.

No faceplate and no hood. From the sound of the story and wardrobe changes, they are trying to reinvent the character completely. Wonderfull. We should just take GI-JOE out of the title here and name it something different. That way, when it flops, it wont bring the entire franchise down with it.

If the first time we saw Darth Vader was when he was a whiny little kid like the one in Phantom of Menace, I doubt he'd be as popular or as iconic as he is today. CC with no hood or faceplate is a stupid, stupid decision. But then again, I guess they know that they have a crappy movie on their hands, that's why we haven't had even a sneak trailer, only a few promo shots of the movie.

Destro's shadowy, masked boss. Levitt signed on because he was given pictures of Cobra Commander and decided it would be fun to play a larger-than-life villain. Levitt is a friend of Tatum and they co-starred in Stop-Loss and Havoc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havoc_(film)). His casting provided extra incentive for Tatum to join the film. USA Today (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_Today) reported Levitt is playing "multiple roles". Like Quaid, Levitt filmed all his scenes in California. Levitt described his vocal performance as being half reminiscent of Chris Latta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Collins)'s voice for the 1980s cartoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.I._Joe:_A_Real_American_Hero_(1985_TV_series)), but also half his own ideas, because he felt rendering it fully would sound ridiculous. He will wear a new mask, as the crew found the original too reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan), and prosthetic makeup underneath the mask.[23] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.I._Joe:_The_Rise_of_Cobra#cite_note-bjacks-22)[24] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.I._Joe:_The_Rise_of_Cobra#cite_note-23)

My friend has a pic of Cobra Commander's mask, and showed it to me yesterday. he deleted it though. he looked like he had some kind of gas mask on (no, not Kroenen style) and 2 metal cigar looking things poking out of the sides. no Cobra logo, and it had a HUGE neck with wires everywhere. he looked like a cyborg, or like one of those borg dudes from Star Trek, but way worse looking. i don't know if it was real, but he said he took the pic while they were filming in Chicago. i hope to god it's not real. it looked so bad, even Sommers could NOT screw his mask THAT bad.
What's this all about. WE ALL KNOW YOU DON'T GET TO SEE COBRA COMMANDER in this movie...you get to see The Doctor. I don't care how he looks as long as in the end, something more Commander related appears. That's all, wait till the movie comes out. Jezz.
We've all seen pics of the doctor and it looks like Darth Vader with hair, no helmet and no mask, just the gas mask. And I'm fine with it. That's not the Commander, ok? This is just what happened To Heath's Joker.

Like I said, my friend said he took it while they were filming. He becomes CC at the end of the movie, so he might wear a mask. He swore on his life that was the real design. Plus he's not really the kind to lie, esspecially since he's a G.I. Joe fan.
