So, I watched the remake of the Planet of the Apes last night, not for the first time I might add, and seriously, what is up with the ending? I genuinely cant/dont get it. Were they high or something? Can someone please explain it to me?

Leo climbs aboard Pericles' pod, which is undamaged, and uses it to travel back in time through the same electromagnetic storm. Leo crashes on what appears to be a futuristic Washington DC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_DC) on Earth in 2029. He looks up to see the Lincoln Memorial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Memorial) is now a monument in honor of General Thade (the statue in this scene is sometimes referred to as "Ape-raham Lincoln"). As a swarm of ape police officers, who are still against humans, descend on Leo, he (and the audience) wonders what has happened to his world.

From a step-by-step position, like the description you just posted, I understand, I just cant understand where they were going with it. I was hoping there would be some sort of explanation.

Just a twist....
In the orginal POTA Taylor (main character)thought he was on another planet. At the end of the film he found The Statue of Liberty buried on a beach and realized that he was on earth the entire time and that humans must have destroyed civilation through war.
POTA 2001 ending was just their way of putting a twist on the ending.
