"A young man's wish to remain standing in death has been fulfilled. Through a special embalming treatment, Angel Pantoja Medina, left, remained upright in a corner at his mother's home in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for his three-day wake. Here, family members bid goodbye to the 24-year-old Monday."

I would **** my pants if I saw a dead corpse standing upright at a wake. Literally, I would **** them.

Looks like the family couldent afford a Coffin, so they brainstormed really quickly.
R.I.P. to who ever died.

When I die, I want to have a Mozart styled funeral where they just shove me in a burlap sack and throw me in my plot.
P.S. How'd the kid die in the first place?

I know it seems really weird, but the practice is quite common in latin culture. The body of a loved one will be brought home, and usually sat in a chair. The family pays their last respects. They may leave flowers with the body, hold the hand of the deceased and pray, etc.
Personally I think the whole idea of embalming a body just so it can be preserved for a week is weird, but thats just me.

It's creepy to me, but if it was the guy's dying wish and the family and his friends are ok with it, guess I really have no right ot say anything against it. It just reminds me not to ask for anything special for my funeral, guess I should cross Carrot top telling jokes with my corpse as a prop off my list....

It'd be really, really creepy, if that corpse, due to gravity, assumed a new position, such as leaning forward.
Especially if you approached it with the intent of paying it some respect.

Why does this pic scream "YA'LL BETTA RECONIZE!"?
When I die I want to be stuffed, like an animal, and passed down from generation to generation - kinda like a family heirloom. Then, I want wiring run from the top of my head and through my body and out my... err... hose. A light bulb inserted in the top of my head with my... uh... unit as the switch for a handy floor lamp. Now THAT is a stroke of genius!
That or I want to be launched into deep space like Spock in Star Trek.
TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!!

Let me ask you something.
If you grew up in that culture that accepts and encourages that kind of tradition, would you still find it disturbing and 'wrong'?
Do you think their reactions would be the same, or different, upon hearing of how we 'do our way'?

That's kind creepy. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to get something quick to drink in the kitchen and, like, your dead relative is just propped up in the corner flexing.I'd scream like a 6 year old girl.

If its was part of my culture, I would not find it weird. Whats weird to one culture is normal to another, and vice versa. I live in Texas where we have a very large Hispanic population and I have heard of this practice.
In modern developed nations we are very removed from death and dying. We aren't used to seeing dead bodies, so there is an element of shock.
I think there might be a conflict of interest for immigrant and their children. There is a desire to adapt, but there is also a desire to hold on to tradition.

The only thing that bugs me is the amount of makeup on the corpse. I realize he's Puerto Rican, but damn they made him like 10 shades darker.
