http://www.latinoreview.com/images/upload/newspic4789.jpg Paul Rudd headlines alongside Jason Segel in next year’s comedy I Love You, Man. Greg Moton (Paul Rudd) is getting married and has to find a best man for his wedding when he realizes he has no male friends. After going on a series of man dates with the likes of Jon Favreau as Barry and Lou Ferrigno who plays himself, Paul settles on Jason Segel (Not sure about his character's name yet). But was he the best choice?

Paul takes a few minutes out of his busy shooting day to talk about the film and how surfers wanted to kick his ass because of the way he portrayed them in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Who knew surfers were so serious?

It looks like you can really play the bass guitar.

Paul Rudd: I can’t, I can play a couple of those songs though, I tried to learn “Limelight” on bass and “Tom Sawyer”, and I figured out the very basic… oh god, he’s such a media whore, you know what I mean?

Looks like you guys are having fun.

Paul Rudd: Actually I’ve never met him.

He hangs around.

Paul Rudd: I was trying to formulate some other twisted joke, but I’ll go back to the bass playing, yeah, I tried to get that “Limelight”, it’s not a really kind of generic way of playing, I could do enough to get the calluses going anyway.

Are you a fan of “Rush”?

Paul Rudd: I do like “Rush”, yeah, when I was a kid they scared me a little bit because I saw the video of “Tom Sawyer” and Geddy Lee just had his hair hanging down, there were certain guys like Rick Nielson of “Cheap Trick” also that I was just kind of freaked out by them.

I was scared by “REO Speedwagon”, that dude with the big fro.

Paul Rudd: Kevin Cronin.

Yeah, he always scared me.

Paul Rudd: Yeah, and now he’s got like short, gray hair.

Yes he does.

Paul Rudd: Kind of frightening, like a young Tom Skerritt.

Who was horrifying.

Paul Rudd: He puts the Scare in Skerritt. Yeah, there were those musicians that really rattled me, and then “Tom Sawyer”, I was like “Why is it called “Tom Sawyer, it just sounds so dark and evil,” and then I got a little older and then I kind of went through this phase where I bought “Moving Pictures”, that record, and then I was like “Red Barchetta”, that’s where it’s at, and I went through a little “Rush” phase and then I got totally of course kind of into them years ago, and kind of like “The Spirit of the Radio” I would play it in my car really loud, so I was really nervous to meet them anyway.

Did you have scenes against them, or are they just playing on stage?

Paul Rudd: No, they’re in the movie and we didn’t have any scenes where I engaged with them, I was just a fan dancing in the show, but I got to meet them, and Jason and I actually interviewed them and I was nervous and like, “How do you interview “Rush”?” They seem also to be really a band that has shied away, they’ve really lived the words of “Limelight”, living in the limelight, it’s surreal and they can’t pretend that a stranger is a long waited friend, I just kept thinking that when I was trying to buddy up to them, but they were very funny and very friendly, and big fans of “Team America”.

I was going to say, did you see their “Trailer Park Boys” episode where they kidnapped them?

Paul Rudd: No.

It’s a Canadian show.

Paul Rudd: Yeah, I know that show.

They kidnap one of the guitar players, it’s pretty funny, I just watched it the other day.

Paul Rudd: They’re really funny guys like they were very nice and yeah, they were really cool, and I don’t know how the topic of “South Park” and “Team America” came up, “Team America” and they all went crazy and started talking, and quoting it, and it was just really weird to be exchanging “Team America” quotes with Neil Peart.

So are you and Segel man pals the same way your characters are?

Paul Rudd: Yeah, I think we get along pretty well, we will do these little extended bits and runs that no one will ever enjoy except us, that’s outside of the movie, hopefully not just in the movie, probably a few, but yeah, we get on pretty well.

You’ve done movies with him before.

Paul Rudd: Yeah, this is our third one, the first one was “Knocked Up” and that was actually where I met him and we didn’t really have a lot of stuff to do in that movie, “Sarah Marshall” there was a lot more, and that was also really fun besides the location and where it was shot, I mean that was truly like, “You guys just say whatever you want,” and so I think that we really started laughing and kind of really clicking on that movie and I was really excited that he was doing this movie.

Can I ask you a question about being in Hawaii? I was just there for the junket for that and the surf instructor said that if they ever see you that they were going to beat you up because they were upset about your portrayal of him in that film.

Paul Rudd: Oh yes, yeah, I thought that they would beat me up for my ability to surf.

No, they said they saw it and were really disappointed that you played him like a stoner dude.

Paul Rudd: Well I think that’s where people really have to have a suspension of disbelief that a surf instructor might actually smoke weed.

Well no, they came and found the rest of the cast and were bugging them, it was kind of fun, I didn’t know if you knew about that.

Paul Rudd: Are you kidding?

No, I’m not kidding, they came and they were like, “Is Paul Rudd here? We’re really upset about this.

Paul Rudd: Wow, well I’m glad I didn’t make the junket.

The nice thing about your character in “Knocked Up” is that your character has no idea that he hates you, or why he hates you because he’s into your wife.

Paul Rudd: Yeah, he’s way into my wife in that movie, that is quintessential Jason Segel that he could just do that creepy stare that lasts a little too long, and it could be very funny, but also unsettling, and he would do that with Leslie Mann in that movie and then he would look at me like probably these surfer guys that wanted to kill me.

Is there some of that in this, is he kind of playing that?

Paul Rudd: He’s created a completely unique character in this movie, I mean the one thing I like about both of our characters is that we’re both guys, but we wear our hearts on our sleeves, and he has no problem acting in ways that might not be considered stereotypically macho, and he knows how to pronounce aoli, as do I, and I think that says it all.

Do you think this movie is going to start a trend with mandates?

Paul Rudd: Probably not, does that happen, there is friend finder, just finding male companionship, those might be different sites than I’m thinking of.

You could try them and get back to us.

Paul Rudd: I will, give me your email addresses and I’ll send you updates on Man dates.

Craigslist is pretty good for that too.

Paul Rudd: It is? You’re starting to reveal something here, I’ve never been to Craigslist or Myspace.

Facebook? I hear Facebook is better, but I’m with you on Myspace.

Paul Rudd: I’m really behind on this, everybody I know has these pages, and I’ve tried to, but I don’t have a password so I can’t get on, I don’t have an account.

So why doesn’t he have any guy friends?

Paul Rudd: Jason?

Your character, well or Jason, I’m assuming your character, but if Jason doesn’t, you can share.

Paul Rudd: Sorry I was just zoning out.

Guy friends, why doesn’t he have any?

Paul Rudd: Jason does, I don’t.

Why don’t you have guy friends?

Paul Rudd: I’ve always been kind of a girlfriend guy, not that I’m particularly weird or anything, it’s just that I’ve always been in long relationships and now that I’m kind of in my mid thirties, it’s really exactly said, I don’t even know how old I am, well post college, I have a career and now I’m getting engaged, and during this engagement, Rashida Jones, who plays my fiancée, you know calls all of her friends that are going to be bridesmaids, and I’m not calling anybody to tell them the news, my parents are sleeping, I’ll tell them tomorrow, I don’t really have any close friends that I would share this news with, and so she says, “Why not,” and I said, “I don’t know, I guess I just kind of put all of my energy into my relationships,” and so that’s kind of how it happens that I realize for the first time, I never thought I was missing anything, and so then I have to try because I think she’s weirded out by it, so I have to go out and try to find some friends.

Is there a Vegas sequence somewhere in this?

Paul Rudd: This might be the only movie I’ve done that doesn’t have a Vegas sequence.

And ironically Jon Favreau is in this.

Paul Rudd: I know, that’s true, I think the whole thing takes place in Southern California.

You’re doing some voiceover work for “Monsters and Aliens”, are you done with that, have you started yet?

Paul Rudd: Yeah, I’ve worked on it a little bit and I have a little more to do, I don’t have that much to do in it, but it’s the first time I’ve ever done anything like that, it’s been really cool to see how they do all of that, I’m excited, I don’t know who I want to win yet, the monsters, or the aliens.

Adam McKay recently mentioned something about wanting to get an “Anchorman 2” going, I don’t know if he was joking or not, serious.

Paul Rudd: I saw that, I think that it would be awesome, I would be in there for sure, and I emailed him afterwards, I think he was serious, I don’t think there’s a script or anything like that, I don’t know if there’s been any ideas, and it was so fun to do and I saw him recently and we were just talking about what a blast that was, so hopefully.

That film was kind of ground zero for what is going on now with of a lot of Judd, the freedom to make the kind of films he’s making, and for a lot of you guys, it just kind of exposed you to a wider audience so now you can kind of mix and match and do these kind of all star comedy ensembles.

Paul Rudd: Yeah, it was really the most incredible thing to be a part of that, and it changed my life for sure, these last few years all these movies I’ve worked on have stemmed from that really, that crew, and also they’ve been a lot of fun, I’ve never worked, since “Anchorman”, it seems like on working with Judd, there’s a way of making them that’s different than anything I’d ever worked on up to that point, and creatively it’s fulfilling in ways that other things aren’t, and I’m just blown away by how funny all those guys are, to sit and listen to McKay and Will Ferrell talk is so intimidating because it’s so crazy and funny and smart.

What’s next?

Paul Rudd: I have no idea.

One day at a time.

Paul Rudd: We finish this in a couple weeks I think and then I don’t know, there’s talk of this strike, so we’ll see if that actually happens, I hope not, but I kind of wanted to take a little time off, I feel I was kind of overdue, I worked on a movie last year that we’re gonna do about a week of reshoots on, to add some additional scenes for it and that comes out, I have no idea when.

Is that the David Wains film?

Paul Rudd: Yeah, it’s with David, the working title is “Little Big Men”, I don’t think that that’ll be the actual title of the movie, I don’t think the title has really been decided.

I remember that film being set up at first Luke Greenfield was going to direct and it went through several permutations.

Paul Rudd: It went through several, yeah, a lot, I think even before Luke Greenfield was involved, and then it was several writers and then I wrote a version of it, and then David came on and we worked on a version of it together, and so it was kind of constantly changing and yet actually I think at the end of the day it turned out pretty well, we had a screening of it, and seen where it’s at right now, I think everyone feels pretty good about it, so hopefully it’ll work out.

I Love You, Man releases in 2009.

It's also cool to see how big he's gotten thinking back to seeing him in that small role in Dead Man On Campus.Rush also makes a cameo in it.

Plus he was one of the best friends in the movie slackers. I caught the end on tv before.

I guess one of the perks of being in Apatow's group.

Any one love the special station Segel had in this? :o:grin:

I saw it tonight. After missing Forgetting Sarah Marshall in theaters, I couldn't resist Rudd and Seigel's latest team up and I am happy I saw it. Absolutely hillarious. Best comedy I've seen in some time. One thing I loved about this movie, is that like in Forgetting Sarah Marshall where our leads were hillarious, the supporting cast was amazing as well. Be it JK Simmons and Andy Samberg talking about Simmons being an honorary gay person, Rashida Jones' subdued reactions as her fiancee slowly turns into a crazy person, John Faverau's abrassive dick head character, or even some of the smaller roles like Ferrigno, the old man, and the gay guy who kept calling Rudd a whore...every character in this movie gets a chance to shine and they all prove to be very funny actors with very funny writing to back them up. Just an amazing comedic experience.

I agree about Superbad, I just didn't like that movie(though the Seth Rogen parts were good). Never saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall(there just was no appeal for me). I Love You Man seems like it(as in, no appeal to me). And I've enjoyed plenty of Apatow crew's stuff(Anchorman, 40YOV, Pineapple Express), but Superbad has made me be more selective about just plunking down my money for their films.

2. You think Paul Rudd is hilarious
3. You think Siegel was the best part of Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I Love You, Man is flat out comedy bliss. So many laughs with Rudd showing a whole different side of him, he's really great in this. Every actor completely owns their roles too, Jason Segel being the prime example.

The jerk station, the s*** giant, the hulk out, Thomas Lennon's character, Badass cardigans, slappin' da bass, d-bag favreau, this movie utterly owns.

The quest to find a best friend begins for Peter Klaven(Paul Rudd) in I Love You, Man when he proposes to his very cute girlfriend Zooey(Rashida Jones). He discovers he doesnt even have a guy friend to stand up as his best man.Sure he has associates he fences with and theres Tevin(Rob Huebel) his co worker but he's a jerk.Plus he doesnt want to become one of those clingy husbands. His brother Robbie(Andy Samberg)hooks him up with some dudes from the gym, that leads to some hilarious montages for us but not for Peter.Zooey's friends try to hook him up with their spouses but that fails too. Finally he meets Sydney Fife(Jason Segel) at open house viewing for Lou Ferrigno's home.Sydney is honest and fun and they hit it off famously. But they spend so much time together it starts to effect his relationship and his job.
I Love You, Man is laugh out loud funny for the most part.Rudd is great especially when he's trying to be hip and cool to impress and Segel's deadpan honesty about life and being bro's adds to the fun too.ILYM is also helped by good comedy turns from,Jaime Pressly,Jon Favreau,Jane Curtin, and
J.K. Simmons.

Regardless of its easy-going charm and engaging characters, I think what struck me most powerfully while watching the new Paul Rudd and Jason Segel bro-mance I Love You, Man is just how flippin’ blessed I am to have such a dependable cadre of oddball male friends. I mean, I don’t drink or “party”, hate sports, boast a number of amusing/troubling irrational hang-ups and am completely unable to reciprocate elaborate handshakes. In all honesty, it’s a wonder I don’t spend every night of my life on the couch watching X-Files DVDs with my cat...

But enough about me already, I Love You, Man features everybody’s favourite non-threateningly handsome leading man Mr. Rudd as Peter Klaven, a slightly up-tight Californian real estate agent. Well-liked and amiable, Peter’s low-key demeanour may have hooked him a gorgeous, thoughtful fiancé in the endearingly named Zooey (The Office star Rashida Jones), but it’s also led to a so-so professional life (he’s struggling to find a buyer for Lou “The Incredible Hulk” Ferrigno’s posh residence) and a dearth of male BFFs. After an epiphany-inducing dinner with his quirky parents (former Conehead Jane Curtin and Spider-Man’s J.K. Simmons) and popular gay brother Robbie (SNL favourite Andy Samberg) our prissy protagonist dedicates himself to finding a new man-friend and, fingers crossed, a best man.

After a truly catastrophic collection of hideously uncomfortable man-dates, with characters ranging from a banshee-voiced soccer fanatic to an eighty-five year old chess enthusiast, Peter inadvertently winds up being introduced to a prospective pal, named Syndey Fife, at an open house for the Ferrigno estate. Played by Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s Jason Segel, Syndey is a slovenly genial giant of a man-child, obsessed with Mexican food, masturbation and the rock band Rush. Despite a disturbing early number of accidental social faux pa’s by Peter, the duo quickly grows inseparable, much to the increasing concern of patient bride-to-be Zooey. As the wedding plans slowly begin to spiral out of control, and his new friendship is put to the ultimate test, Peter is forced to find a balance between his two quickly colliding universes.

While I Love You, Man won’t win any trophies for originality - other than a potential MTV Movie Awards moon-man, that is – the film is ultimately carried on the shoulders of its two attractively charismatic leads. The always winning Rudd, whose previous starring vehicle Role Models was an unexpected comedic winner, continues to demonstrate his brilliant affinity for white male neuroticism, making simple public acts, such as leaving a voice-mail for a potential pal or coming up with a cool nick-name, into mini masterpieces of anxiety-soaked embarrassment. He may not have the over-the-top magnetism of a Ben Stiller or Will Ferrell but, for my money, Rudd is probably the most consistently stellar actor working in comedy today.

Fortunately he finds a great match in Jason Segel, who impressed with Sarah Marshall, but really comes into his own here. His Sydney walks a fine line between shaggy lovability and unbearable neediness, but Segel never wavers, displaying not only a sharp capacity for comic timing, but also a stunning level of emotional truth and heart-warming sincerity. Syndey is a truly original creation and deserves mention among classic funny-film foils such as John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Walter Mattheu in The Odd Couple. Further, based on the actor’s work here, I would not be surprised to one day see him making the jump to a booming career in dramatic character work.

Director John Hamburg, who helmed the semi-decent Along Came Polly, does his best Judd Apatow impersonation in presenting this modern day dude-love story, with fairly robust results. The laughs, while rarely uproarious, are consistent and clever. Any movie that features references to Chocolat, Andre the Giant and former Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat is all right by me. However, I Love You, Man falters significantly, unlike the Apatow oeuvre, in regards to its astronomically gifted supporting cast. While Rashida Jones is uniformly strong, making Zooey a surprisingly plausible three-dimensional love interest, and John Favreau and Jaime Pressly kill as a dysfunctional couple in the Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? mould, the majority of the team players are forced to battle it out for pretty meagre scraps. Why cast J.K. Simmons and Jane Curtin as a married couple and then ignore them? An odd and unfortunate choice, indeed.

In spite of some regrettable creative decisions though, I’m not for a second going to dissuade you from checking out this predominantly successful feel-good trip into the juvenile heart of male camaraderie. I suspect that men will find I Love, You, Man frighteningly relatable and entertaining, while female audience members are almost guaranteed to laugh, when not nodding knowingly to one another. Love may be too strong a word, but I have no problem saying that I really, really liked this Man.

Just a one disc DVD, it's packed with decent features.

Commentary with Rudd and Segel
17 minute making of
22 minutes of alternate lines (some hilarious ones by Favreau)
12 minutes of extended scenes
3 minutes of deleted scenes
12 minute gag reel
