I don't know about the darkest, but Gone Baby Gone is up there for me. TDK is probably the most intense film I've seen this year. Blade Runner is dark for its day. Also, the general disposition of every 'out for their own personal gain' character in the Maltese Falcon makes it one of those kind for me. Full Metal Jacket is like that. I can't group them into any order, but those are some I can think of off the top of my head.

I know that Cannibal Holocaust is as nasty as you can possibly get, but how is it really a dark film? The movie even seemed like an actual documentary, so that alone ends it for me classifying it as dark.

No Country for Old Men. The ending is so dark that people were mad at it because it just....ended. No resolution. The bad guy gets away, one hero dies and the other gives up.

Depends. It's a film you have to pay attention to to understand the true horror that's happening otherwise it's just some crazy old bat rambling on about eating babies and stuff.

I'd say some of the darkest films are the ones that pose alot of questions without giving clear answers. A good example is "Gone Baby Gone".

Now I haven't seen that film but any script writer or director that has the hero losing or the main character/title role die and the villian winning is really brave and a quality writer/filmmaker if they can make it work within the story. It is so different, unexpected and not cliched if you will.

Alien 3 is pretty dark, right off the bat. It kills off 3 main characters in the opening sequence and it just gets worse from there. Ripley's forced to start all over again in a hostile prison environment with alien loose again. The one friend she does make gets killed and then she finds out that she is carrying the next Queen Alien. She's then decides to kill herself to save mankind, but has to make a very difficult decision when she is presented with a way out at the end of the film.

One of the darkest films I've ever seen is also one of my all time favorites:Der Untergang(The Downfall).
That movie was so good that you actually felt like you were in the bunker with Adolf Hitler and his friends and followers. It was a claustrophobic atmosphere and depressing. Although Hitler was evil and you certainly don't cheer for him,he was also human and you kind of felt for him as his world crumbled down around him. You also had the "suicide" of the Goebbels children and the chaos and death that lead up to the end of the war.
Some of the darkest films I've seen that haven't been mentioned yet:
The Chaser (Korean film - really good)
The Crow
Manhunter (the first Hannibal Lecter movie)
The Girl Next Door (based on the Jack Ketchum novel)
Pet Sematary (the book is darker)
Mulholland Dr.
Brick

I'm surprised no one has mentioned 'The Descent'. The movie itself was the first I recall to have scared the $#&% out of me, so badly, that I was actually leaning my head into the pillow, as I shut off the TV. An intense, disturbing horror movie, other horror movies should take note from this one, because this is truly scary.

The Omen
Devil's Advocate
Se7en
The Dark Knight
Batman Returns
Carnal Knowledge
The Shining

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (People will probably go WTF on this one, but the ending is possibly the darkest things ever put on film. It's even creepier in the extended version when they sing "Superheroes.")

Mature Content, of course. What is the difference? If something is geared toward adults shouldn't it have mature content? If a peice of art is commercialized does it stop being a peice of art?

Well i would've liked it if you you more specific in what you wanted to see as darkest movies. In terms of mature content i think flicks like The dark Knight and the latest Harry Potter movies pale in comparison to Old Boy.
I see people here posting movies like TDK , Batman Returns and The Mist as their darkest movies but really is the dark knight darker then se7en. Or the shining . Or requiem for a dream .
There are certain flicks that are dark from the start and continue to go deeper in that area. Se7en starts off as a movie about a serial killer and eventually goes into horrific images of people enduring the 7 sins .
We are talking about the darkest movies we've seen. That pretty limits us to truly psychotic stuff like 8 MM , Oldboy etc.

I think that these types of threads tell us a lot about each other and a lot about how we view movies differently. There is a reason why people post such movies. The Dark Knight is darker than Se7en, Oldboy is a critique on a persons psyche, showing the fruitlessness of vengeful action. The Dark Knight not only shows this fruitlessness in a different way, but it calls into question every human institution, rule, and dogma. In Se7en, people endure the 7 deadly sins, but it never really goes far beyond that. The point of the nameless killer was to show how the sins have corrupted us all even the selfrightuous cop.
It all depends on how we veiw these movies as dark, and that is why these threads interest me.

Good pick. That ending is pretty damn sad. I've only seen that flick once, but I thought it was brilliant, I need to check it out again.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Yeah, another good pick. Except for the fact that pretty much the whole movie is about a person who can't escape death, the whole Black Lodge mythology that is shown to us makes you realize (but only after thinking and analyzing and reading up on it for a week) that there are no really good spirits around, except for maybe The Giant. Evil is so much stronger. That's some grim ****.
