There are two HUGE reasons this movie is getting so much hype.

1. It is directed AND written by a guy who might be the world's best film maker...ever. He has never made a bad film, and only puts out a movie every 5 to 10 years because of how much he puts into each and every film he makes.

2. This film apparently cost half a BILLION dollars. Half a billion! It would be one thing if half a billion dollars was given to a crappy film maker, or even an average film maker to make a film. It is a completely different story when it is given to James "fricken" Cameron.

How the crap is it generic? It certainly has taken some ideas from the pages of history. But then again most great sci-fi movies do. I'd be amazed if you can name me one movie that has anything like this.

The storys protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms, some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Navi, a sentient humanoid race that are more physically capable than humans, although considered primitive. Standing three meters tall, with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Navi live in harmony with their unspoiled world. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Navi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence. Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Navi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies that are controlled by a human "driver" through a technology that links the driver's mind to their Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. IMAX theaters play films on an eight-story screen in crystal clear quality and laser-aligned sound. The final product will be a more effective and immersive experience. The 15 minute screening was enough to show me that the film, visually, in IMAX 3D will be quite a memorable experience. But, hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion.:up:

While IMAX and 3D can be gimmicks, they account for a better, more fun film experience -- look at TDK. As for Avatar, from the footage I've seen, its use of 3D is second to none. Each object on-screen is like a layer that all extend out of the screen and the scene will play out in front of you in the most immersive way that's possible. With the new 3D, motion-capture technology and use of CGI -- it will all make an incredibly fun film, visually. Not to sound condescending, but there's nothing wrong with people wanting a more fun film experience.
