you'd think they'd have realized that it's not working for them to go out and buy all the best talent rather than building more from within and augmenting with the occasional star free agent, but i guess they're slow learners, plus their youngsters haven't panned out all that well lately.
They tried that. But it didn't happen overnight so they abandoned ship.
They better enjoy their rotation as it is currently constructed. It won't be fun when Burnett and Joba are on the DL.

New York & Los Angeles – FOX Sports launches its 14th season this Saturday, April 11 (4:00 PM ET), once again bringing fans Major League Baseball’s top weekend matchups with regional coverage of the FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK. Week 1 includes a replay of last year’s thrilling ALDS as American League MVP Dustin Pedroia and the Boston Red Sox travel west to face Vladimir Guerrero and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Other action includes the Minnesota Twins taking on the Chicago White Sox, who last season squared off in a one game playoff for the AL Central title, and the Houston Astros visiting the St. Louis Cardinals, opponents in both the ’04 and ’05 NLCS.
This season features a new on-air time and new-look pregame and postgame shows. The pregame originates live from one of the regional games on the FOX SATURDAY GAME OF THE WEEK schedule and is hosted by the versatile Chris Rose. In addition to his wide-ranging work on FSN, Rose has served as pregame, halftime and postgame host for FOX Sports’ Bowl Championship Series coverage and has filled in as a co-host of FOX NFL SUNDAY. In his new role with MLB on FOX, Rose brings fans late-breaking baseball news and notes and sets the scene for the day’s MLB action. Once the game begins, Rose joins the FOX broadcast team on location, serving as a field reporter. This season, FOX Sports’ new broadcast window begins at 4:00 PM ET, with the exception of three weeks when FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK directly precedes NASCAR on FOX race coverage. On those Saturdays, MLB on FOX goes on-air at 3:30 PM ET. (see the schedule above.)
Returning as the MLB on FOX’s lead broadcast team for the 14th straight season are six-time Emmy Award-winning play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and two-time World Series Champion and three-time Emmy Award-winning analyst Tim McCarver. Joining them for the fourth consecutive year as field reporter is Ken Rosenthal. Former Cubs and Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Grace teams with play-by-play announcer Thom Brennaman, while Kenny Albert joins analyst and LA Dodgers all-time home run leader Eric Karros in the booth to comprise MLB on FOX’s other two stellar broadcast teams.

Phillies' starting pitching is not that good; especially without Cole Hamels. Myers sucks, Moyer was lucky last year, Blanton is a 4th starter, and Chan Ho Park...'nuff said.

:cmad: While Moyer, Blanton, Myers, and Park are no CY Young candidates I think they're still a pretty solid rotation.
Myers sucks at times, but is great at others. He needs to use his fastball more instead of trying to get that off speed pitch over....that generally results in BP like Sunday Nights game.

Moyer and Blanton are no better than #3 starters. Park is a 5th starter on a good day. Their rotation is more likely to be worse than the Mets; especially in CBP. Have to see how it plays out.

That's a tough one. Neither rotation is top of the line and both feature some pitchers that can be pretty damn awful. I say toss-up.

Santana > Hamels (barely)
Pelfrey > Myers
Perez and Moyer is a toss up. Moyer is old as hell but Perez can sometimes get pretty crazy yo
If Maine pitches like he did in 07 then > Blanton.
Park and Livan both suck
Spidey-Bat
04-07-2009, 11:52 PM
I'd take Livan over Park simply because he has a better track record. Park was a creation of Dodger Stadium. Other than Livan's 2008 (which he spent in 2 hitters parks), he's been a serviceable 5th starter. However, Park will be replaced by Happ who I would take over Livan. Until then, slight edge to Livan.

That's what happens when you couldn't give a **** about either team. ESPN is famous for it.
The A's are an enigma within a riddle wrapped in a burrito. Last night they can barely manage 3 hits, and tonight they toss up 15. Without Holliday. They just feel like a weird team.

TORONTO (AP)—Beer and alcohol sales were banned at the Tigers-Blue Jays game Tuesday night, a day after their season opener was delayed when unruly fans littered the field with baseballs and debris.
The clubhouses were cleared of booze, too, after the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario suspended the liquor license at Rogers Centre for three dates because of past infractions.
The panel cited five broken rules at baseball and football games and concerts dating to the Canadian Football League championship game in 2007. The stadium will also be dry on April 21 when Toronto plays Texas, and for a CFL game on Aug. 1.
Both affected baseball games fell on dates when the price of upper deck seats was cut to $4, a promotion called “Messin’ With Recession.” The ban covers everything from concessions, vendors and restaurants to the beer refrigerators in both locker rooms.
Signs posted Tuesday at stadium entrances listed five reasons for the license suspension: permitting drunkenness, permitting the use of narcotics, selling and serving to apparent minors, failure to request approved identification and permitting illegal liquor on the premises.
The Blue Jays’ 12-5 win Monday was delayed nine minutes in the eighth inning when fans threw two baseballs in the direction of Detroit left fielder Josh Anderson and tossed a handful of paper planes and empty beer cups onto the field.
Anderson was pleased to hear alcohol would not be sold Tuesday.
“That’s good,” he said. “These people can’t handle it.”
Mario Coutinho, vice president for stadium operations and security, said the three dry dates were jointly selected in talks between stadium staff and the alcohol commission.
“We proposed some dates that were suitable to their criteria,” Coutinho said. “They came with ‘X’ number dates of suspension and we suggested some proposed dates based on the events that we’ve had in the past.”
Fans who want to exchange their tickets for the affected dates will be allowed to, subject to availability.
Last season, the Blue Jays halted alcohol sales in the upper deck for three games in May and June after fans brawled in the stands, leading to almost 100 ejections.
On Tuesday, the team increased security by checking bags and patting down fans in a bid to stop alcohol from being smuggled into the stadium.
Tuesday’s ban meant little to Tigers manager Jim Leyland.
“That has no bearing on me,” Leyland said. “I don’t drink beer, particularly not during the game.”
Beer should be banned at all major league games, IMO. But of course it's all about the $$$.
Leyland may not drink but he smokes. He has a cigarette between every inning.

I remember the Cubs were gonna ban beer during the playoffs last season(or was it if they got to the World Series?). Most stadiums have plastic cups when giving out beer. PNC Park did when I went there in '07.

I would agree that both are 3's. Myers is the key. If he can find is location and stop with the constant off speed pitches then are rotation moves up a notch...that's a big if though.
Yeah, Happ will be the five but I think they wanted to give Park a shot first, plus he had the better spring. Happ can help out in the bullpen till JC returns.

Mets success or failure is going to hinge in large part on guys like Pelfrey and Perez having decent seasons.
I like Pelfrey. I have him as a breakout guy this year and drafted him in fantasy leagues accordingly (well ones where I actually made the draft thst is.) Ollie Perez on the other hand, scares the bejeesus out of me.

I can understand taking the cap at a hockey or basketball game. The players are constantly moving across the ice/court and could slip on them an injure themselves.
But at baseball games, you first have to be really strong to throw them and even if you do, no one is going to trip on it. Even if it landed on the basepaths, they can quickly remove it.
At Citi Field, the vendor with soda took caps but I saw some people walking around with their caps on their bottle.
Like Immortalfire, I try to remember to bring some.

I understand the idea of not wanting people to chuck them on the playing surface, but if you are doing that you shouldn't be at the game in the first place. A person can just as easily throw a penny on the ice and do just as much damage.
I just try and drink beer anyway. No hassle with a cap with that.

His first gaffe was an error charged to Reyes.
For those who don't know what he did, Phillips was stealing, Encarnacion grounded out to Wright. Wright threw to Delgado. Delgado stepped off the bag and went forward to throw at 3B b/c Phillips ran past 2B to try to get to 3B. The score was 9-7 so that run meant nothing.

It's not much different than Wagner. Wagner would throw more strikes but he'd get ahead of guys 0-2, then they'd foul off pitches and then he'd throw a couple sliders in the dirt that they'd have to jump out of. Then he'd hang one and they'd hit it.

Angels Starting Pitcher Killed After Ball Game
TMZ has learned Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton, California early this morning -- hours after he pitched in a game last night.
Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart and three others were riding in to hit a light pole. Three of the four people in the Mitsubishi were killed in the crash: Nick, another man and a woman.
Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run. The suspect is currently being treated for injuries in a local hospital.
We're told one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization.
Nick was 22 years old.
This is awful. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

MLB Net Adds Live Saturday Games
By Jon Lafayette
MLB Network said it is adding a package of live Saturday evening games
to its broadcast schedule, doubling the number of games it will carry
in its first season.
The first Saturday night game will air April 11 and feature the Los
Angeles Dodgers at the Arizona Diamondbacks.
MLB Network previously had a package of 26 Thursday night game
telecasts.
Adding these Saturday night games will allow us to further our
commitment to showcase all 30 Major League clubs at the national
level, said Tony Petitti, president and CEO of MLB Network. Having
two national games each week will also help us augment our already
robust MLB Tonight studio programming.

Intent is irrelevant if you kill someone with a car while drunk regardless of your license status. It's codified into the laws. It's a statutory crime, same as being an adult and having sex with someone under the age of 16. It doesnt matter what you thought you were doing or what you intended to do. If you;re over the legal limit driving a car, and that car is the proximate cause of someone dying then you're ****ed.

They need to get rid of Mitch Williams. They showed the Mets' highlights and he whined about Reyes' handshakes twice.
He also made the most brilliant analysis; Wright snagged a line drive and dove to double up the runner on 3rd and Williams said "He is a a baseball player!" No ****ing ****.

Sloppy game defensively in Florida, but the pitchers are on point. Marlins on top 2-0 through 7.

I don't think he did actually. Sure Johnson gave up a run and two more hits but when it came down to get an out after giving up a double or an error he did it. Santana did not.

I shouldn't even bother, but I've been going to Marlins games since day one. Through the good times and the bad. I'm sorry that I don't think a pitcher that lost the game performed better. Santana was damn near perfect today, I'll give him credit. But Josh Johnson showed incredible composure and maturity today and ultimately, that's what got them the win. With all those big hitters in the the Mets line-up, it's a pretty big feat to keep them to one run IMO.

Marlins do this every year... their SP keeps them a float.... they have some decent young players that drive in runs. But the bullpen just implodes in the most inopportune, critical junctures of the season, and they never got over that hump since 2003. If they can stay healthy they'll be in it, but unless they make a move the bullpen will keep them out of the playoffs.

Because other than 6 position players and 3 pitchers, they are a completely different team. It's also a new season.

Yeah, it's a new season so what are we basing them being a good team on exactly? Like I said, the Mets will probably make the playoffs and the Marlins won't, but right now, they're only a good team on paper. I fully expect them to cut loose soon however.

Rehabing New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez is back in Florida and was stepping out this weekend in Miami with Bethenny Frankel, one of the reality stars of "The Real Housewives of New York City," according to the New York Daily News.
Alex Rodriguez and the sexy chef shared an intimate dinner on Friday night at a local restaurant, a spy told the Daily News. Rodriguez dropped off Frankel at the Fontainebleau Hotel around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Word is the third baseman was due to make reservations for another dinner with Frankel Saturday night.
A source told The News' Gatecrasher column last month that Frankel and A-Rod hooked up "three months ago" but that, after quickly rounding the bases, "A-Rod cut it off."

I wiki'd this chick and she was on Martha Stewart's Apprentice; she was hideous. Jeez, A-Rod has awful taste in women. Isn't there some young, 20-something model he can hook up with? If Brady can get Giselle there's no reason A-Rod can't get someone just as good looking.

Kalas passes out, taken to hospital
Philadelphia Daily News
Daily News Staff Report
WASHINGTON - Legendary Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas has been taken by ambulance to a Washington area hospital after he was found passed out in the press box at Nationals Park.
Team president David Montgomery said Kalas, 73, was found at about 12:30 p.m. by Rob Brooks, the Phillies' director of broadcasting. Emergency medical personnel were called and took Kalas to George Washington University Hospital.
Team president David Montgomery characterized the situation as "serious," but did not have any further information.
The Phillies' announcers were brought to the team's clubhouse at about 1 p.m., and they and the players were told about Kalas.
He missed most of spring training after undergoing surgery in early February. The team declined to provide specifics of the surgery at that time, saying only that it was a "minor medical procedure" and that there was no reason for concern. It is unknown if that is related to the current situation.
Kalas has broadcast Phillies games since 1971. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 as the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award. He is entering the final season of a 3-year contract that he signed in December 2006.
