WASHINGTON -- Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas has died at the age of 73, team president David Montgomery said Monday.

Kalas, who also filled a voiceover role for NFL Films since 1975, was taken to a hospital Monday after passing out in the broadcast booth before Monday's game against the Washington Nationals.

The 73-year-old Kalas, known for his distinctive "Outta here!" call on home runs, was found by the Phillies director of broadcasting at about 12:30 p.m., Montgomery said.

Kalas joined the Phillies in 1971. Before that, he was an original member of the Houston Astros' broadcast team from 1965-70.

In 2002, he received the Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award for his contributions to the game.

That's pretty sad about the Phillies broadcaster. RIP.

Meh. To be honest I don't think he was head hunting at all. It wasn't even really that close. Red Sox have had their share of headhunters over the years, Beckett not so much.

I don't buy that Beckett had no control over where that pitch went. He threw it just off Abreu's head on a pitch that had no impact on the game situation whatsoever. He wasn't doing it to back him off the plate or anything like that. He just got pissed that time was granted and let his pitch fly up and in. Then he has the stones to walk to the plate yelling and screaming at Abreu.

I used to kind of like him in Florida, then had no real problems with him in Boston. But that display honestly made me lose all respect for him.

Btw, why is it that Mets never seemed to be able to score when Johan Santana is on the mound?

In this case, he just ran into a pitcher having just as good a day. He would have got the win if Murphy had caught the ball. The short and simple answer is, it's because he's a Met :o

Good quote from Manuel on Santana: “They normally say he’s a second-half guy. Well, then we’ve got a lot to look forward to.”

I certainly think he had control over the pitch, I just didn't think it was really all that close to cause such a big fuss, that's all. The delay in the time out certainly wasn't Abreu's fault, Beckett was taking his sweet ass time on the mound. I just didn't think it was all that bad compared the antics of one Pedro Martinez and Lowe, nevermind Roger when he was here.

Manny really doesn't have all the wires connected up there.

Dude, that Beckett pitch is on par with that Clemens pitch he threw at Manny that started the Pedro versus Zim cage match back in the day. Nowhere near as bad as they wanted to make it.

On the other hand, Beckett should've been tossed for getting in...well everybody's face.

One thing I was disappointed about was Santana wasn't there (his wife gave birth). Last year at opening day, my dad and I were late and go to our seats just after they announced his name and everyone cheered (I always like seeing that). We did get to see Scott Schoeneweis get booed. Speaking of booing, Heath Bell got booed when they announced him but he laughed and then lifted his cap. Cliff Floyd got cheered a lot.

ughh sad day yesterday for baseball. While I'm not from Philly, I've lived here for 8+ years now and am married to a life-long Phillies fan so I grew quite fond of Kalas over the years. He and Vin Scully were always my favorites in addition to Ernie Harwell.

Tragic news about Fydrich as well. One of my first Halloween costumes when I was 3 or 4 years old when I was growing up in MI was Mark Fydrich. The guy was so insanely popular for like a 3 year span and then just completely flamed out after a knee injury but was still always around the Tigs organization through the years. I sat in a sky box right next to one he was in during the 2006 World Series.

Dead goat found hanging on Wrigley Harry Caray statue.

April 13, 2009
BY MAUREEN O'DONNELL AND ROSE SOBOL Staff Reporters

The Friendly Confines became the Freaky Confines Monday.

There was a Dead goat found hanging on the Wrigley Field Harry Caray statue.

A similar incident occurred in 2007, in what many perceived as a bizarre attempt to lift the notorious Billy Goat curse.

Police said they received a 911 call about the goat around 2:40 a.m. Monday.

The goat was dangling from a rope on one of Caray's outstretched arms, according to Town Hall District police, who took the animal down and disposed of the remains. It was not known how the goat died, police said.

In 2007, police found a skinned, butchered goat attached to the Caray statue at Addison and Sheffield.

A Cubs spokeswoman said club officials didn't know much about Monday's incident. "We won [4-0 over the Colorado Rockies], so that's all that matters," said Dani Holmes.

Police Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti called the find a "deceased goat." Town Hall District Lt. Dragan Lakich said it was his understanding it was just a goat head.

In a multi-ethnic town such as Chicago, "You can get them at any butcher shop," Lakich said.

EDIT: Make that 6 games.

NEW YORK (AP) - Boston pitcher Josh Beckett has been suspended for six games and fined by Major League Baseball, which determined he intentionally threw a pitch near the head of the Los Angeles Angels' Bobby Abreu last week.

If Beckett appeals, any penalties would be delayed until after a hearing.

Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher was suspended for one game and fined, and he was to serve the penalty Tuesday night. In addition, Watson fined Angels manager Mike Scioscia and players Torii Hunter and Justin Speier.

Other than the rotunda and this one place called the 'Ebbets Club', there's nothing else that's Dodger related. They do have some Brooklyn Dodger stuff in the store but it's 99% Mets.

If you sit in your seat and look around at the stadium, there isn't much that says Mets but that was the case in Shea, too.

To me, it looked like Beckett was in his delivery as the ump called time and just lost control of the ball. The ump should not call time when the pitcher isn't looking towards home plate (Beckett was facing 2B and only turned to the plate to start his delivery).

If you want to play it that way, Beckett is more than old enough not to play some bush league bull**** and then go stomping towards the plate screaming at the guy he just headhunted for no reason.

And Scioscia did order his players and coaches off the field. Since when has that ever worked in the history of baseball? He only got pissed when Beckett started screaming again and the umps began tossing Angels.

Scioscia didn't come out and be an idiot. His team was defending Abreu, and then he ordered them to clear the field. Beckett instigated the benches clearing by stomping towards home plate. Then, when it was over and done with, Beckett approached Scioscia and started the whole thing again.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4067947

Beckett's pitch sailed over Abreu's head, leading to both benches clearing in the first-inning incident. Scoscia remained on the field while his players returned to the dugout, then was approached by Beckett. The teams returned to the field, pushing and shoving ensued, and Hunter, Hatcher and Speier were ejected.

Even if you go with the theory that he wasn't headhunting (which I don't) his actions deserved a suspension.

It was a little dramatic if you ask me. I've seen guys actually get it near the head and just trot towards first base. This ball sailed well over his head and the whole Angels bench goes apehouse. Seems like leftover emotion from what happened with the tragic death of one of their players more then anything. I mean if Beckett wanted to hit Abreu in the head or even dust him off, he would have done it. That wasn't really all that close at all.

Also, tomorrow is Jackie Robinson Day. ALL 330 players will wear 42. Honestly, this is getting out of hand. It was fine 2 years ago when 1 person per team wore it. I thought having some teams have everyone wear it was too much last year. Now they do this? I hope this is the last of it. But I guess selling 330 "player worn 42 jerseys" makes the MLB a lot of money. I'm sure Jackie would be very happy to see MLB milking his legacy to make some extra cash on some merc.

Staying healthy in order to succeed goes without saying, and I'm with you on the shakey bullpen (though they've looked great the last few games), but I don't buy in to the "starters are too young" argument that people throw out. The seats I had at Opening Day were valued at $27 (of course my dad didn't pay that price). While you lost the LF corner (unlike most people, I don't ***** and moan about the blindspots. 99% of the action occurs on the diamond anyway), they were good seats. I recall reading the average ticket price was around $35 at Citi Field. It was around $76 at Yankee Stadium.

I really doubt that it's less than $100 at Wrigley Field while $500 for a comparable seat at Citi Field or New Yankee stadium.

I find your lack of faith disturbing...but yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they drop a game this weekend. They're not going to remain on this hot streak all year, though now is a good time to build on it with the Nationals and Pirates coming up.

I mean, the Marlins are notorious for laying eggs versus bad teams.:csad:

Mets win their first 1-0 game since June 2007. Santana pitched 7 scoreless innings; Mets were shutout until bottom 7th when they got a runner to 3rd on an error. Reyes hit a line drive that knocked the pitchers glove off that brought in the run. Putz pitched a perfect 8th, then K-Rod gave up a leadoff hit. Got Fielder to whiff. The game ended on a strikeout-throw 'em out DP.

He's pitched well with the Mets. He had 2 bad outings but those were after Adenhart got killed so I doubt he was still over it mentally to pitch well. He hasn't pitched in a few days so if the Angels got him back, he'd be fresh.

If the Mets want to keep him, they could send a player to essential trade for O'Day. I don't think they'd trade a starter; at least a good, young one. Depends on how desperate the Angels are.

Kingfish
