Coaching great Pete Newell dies...http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=ap-obit-newell&prov=ap&type=lgns

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP)—Pete Newell, the Hall of Fame basketball coach who won an NCAA championship and Olympic gold medal and later tutored some of the game’s greatest big men, died Monday. He was 93.

His death was confirmed by the University of California, the school Newell coached to a national title in 1959. Newell, who had been living near San Diego, had a serious lung operation in 2005.

Newell coached for 14 years at San Francisco, Michigan State and California before doctors advised him to give it up because of the emotional toll. His final coaching job came in the 1960 Olympics, when he took a U.S. team led by Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and Jerry Lucas to a gold medal in Rome.

Newell later returned to prominence with his famous “big men” camps. He instructed some of the game’s greatest stars, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Shaquille O’Neal and Ralph Sampson.

Bah. I saw the Duke v. Carolina game. I have come to the conclusion that Duke is probably the most hated ACC team nationwide, but for those schools that actually live here or people who breathe the rivalry and ACC basketball, nothing is more obnoxious and annoying than a condescending Carolina fan. Duke wins a lot, but the term ABC is synonymous with "Anyone But Carolina" in this state. It looks like no one has the ability to stand in their way to win the ACC tournament and that is too bad. I have my doubts how their defense (or lack thereof) will help them in the tournament when they have to play teams like UCONN or Oklahoma.

BTW, I too saw the Duke/Carolina rivalry HBO documentary. Always fascinating and provides for great entertainment to watch the two teams. Albeit, the doc. felt a little biased towards Chapel Hill, which leads into my earlier theory.

LegendaryCaleb

03-12-2009, 08:12 AM
I didn't keep watching after the WVU-ND game. Harangody deserved the game ball last night, over every other player on both teams combined. I was pulling hard for him last night. I still wanted my Mountaineers to win, but I really wanted ND to have at least a shot at winning.

I've got an even bigger night tonight. I'm gonna be switching back and forth like a madman between ESPN and ESPN2 for the NC State game and the backyard brawl. Personally, I think State has a better shot against Maryland than WVU has against Pitt. In the end, I think both teams will go home tonight. It's been so frustrating watching the Wolfpack and the Mountaineers shoot themselves in the foot time and time again this season.

Also... UNC playing in their home state is a freaking crime.

I don't think it does. I like watching all the game... most have been pretty boring. I miss the buzzer beaters and the major upsets.

Upsets? Dude, three different 12 seeds knocked off a 5; Cleveland State (13), who hasn't been in the Dance since the late 90's, beat Wake Forest (4); 10 seeds like Michigan, Maryland and USC won and Dayton prevailed as an 11 seed. What do you want? A 16 over a 1?

Gonzaga and Western Kentucky just had the last basket scored with 0.9 seconds on the clock. Yesterday's Tennessee/Oklahoma State game had the winning shot with 7 seconds left and ended on a missed 3. On top of that, two games went to OT with a few others (Ohio State/Siena, UCLA/VCU, Purdue/Washington, Marquette/Utah State) being decided by two points or less. Duke/Texas was in doubt until about 10-15 seconds left. By mentioning buzzer beaters, I imagine that, overall, you're referencing exciting finishes. There have been plenty.

If you find yourself not interested in this year's tourney, it's certainly your prerogative. However, citing a lack of upsets or down-to-the-wire finishes doesn't really fly.

Also... UNC playing in their home state is a freaking crime.
It was the same for Duke and Ohio State. Villanova played in their home city. Two or three years ago, UCLA didn't play a postseason game (conference tournament, included) outside of California until the Final Four. It happens.

Meh... those aren't really upsets. It has been a pretty boring tourney overall.

Yea. But mostly it's Duke and North Carolina. There should be a rule put in place that teams can't play in their home state. Those two school play in North Carolina almost every year. It's a crime.

You could see Buzz Williams (what I imagine, given his anger) cursing at the official, with his hand cupped over his mouth, as to avoid a tech. He got off the court pretty fast too; just barely shook hands with the other coach. Can't really blame him. That was a tough way to lose.

Looking back at it, I really liked what I saw from Michigan. They pulled the minor upset in the first round, after just scraping into the field. Held strong against Oklahoma for the most part too. I think Beilein has it going in the right direction.

Lawson gutted out a clutch standing against LSU to help ice that Carolina victory in the 2nd half against LSU. He should be good to go come the Gonzaga game.

As a Pitt fan, they continue to scare me. The upside is that they are battle-tested from all the close games. As long as they stay in for the first 3 quarters, they can go all the way.

Though I'm certainly no basketball expert, I'm applying the mentality the Steelers have had for their last 2 Super Bowl wins. It's all about finding a way to win.

Florida coach Billy Donovan will not be a candidate for the Kentucky job or any jobs that come open.

“In response to the rumors circulating about my interest in other jobs, I wanted to address this as quickly as possible," Donovan said in a statement. "I am committed to the University of Florida and look forward to continuing to build our program here."

Kentucky is leaving a bad taste in my mouth....IMO Tubby Smith got canned because he was the wrong color and the PTB at UK wanted to seem "fair", and Gillespie didn't want to play the political game, which might have flown if they were any good and actually got into the tournament this year

Couple things here....

Tubby didn't get canned. He left! He wasn't forced out. He left.

Also, people didn't like him because he wasn't beating the ranked teams. He didn't recruit. He didn't get back to a Final Four and it was the longest drought in team history. He had the most double digit loss season. It had NOTHING to do with the color of his skin. He was handed the best program in college basketball and ran it into the ground.

Now. Gillespie was a tool. He was a total d*** to his players. Told Miller to walk from the stadium to the hotel... made Stevenson eat a whole box of Pop Tarts to fatten him up.... made another player sit in a stall because he didnt want to look at him and that is where s*** belonged. Half the players were going to transfer at the end of the season. He was banging every broad in the city and feel a sleep EEEEEEEERRRRR passed out drunk in his car one to many times. He was a embarrassment to the state and the university. I didn't want his ESPN over hyped arse two years ago. I wanted Cal. It was worth the wait.

The Trojans will always run second to UCLA in LA. It's a football school. If you can bring decent recruits there, you can clean up at Arizona (contending for conference and national titles). If he's pedaling that story to his recruits now, he's lying through his bloody teeth and the recruits are morons for believing it.

However, I'll set aside a good portion of my cynicism and just interpret the demand for a 24-hour turnaround on the decision as a dealbreaker ...although, it still seems like a no-brainer if you're not averse to a high expectation/high reward situation. Arizona went beneath itself by even talking to Floyd IMO.

Congrats to UNC on winning the title. They're a fun team to watch. Loaded with talent. I hear they're going hard after high school recruit John Wall, aka Tywon Lawson but 4-5 inches taller. Lawson has incredible speed, agility, and shotmaking ability but Wall can do all the same things and he's taller. If they get Wall, they have a decent shot to get back to the Final Four. Lawson was hands down the MVP of their team. If the team is a Ferrari, he's the V12 engine. They'll struggle without a PG who has that kind of playmaking ability, but Wall would instantly fill the gap left by Lawson's jump to the NBA. They are going to be LOADED in the frontcourt though. Deon Thompson, Ed Davis, Tyler Zeller, John Henson (5-star recruit), and the Wear twins (each 4-star recruits). 6 guys that are all at least 6 foot 8 and every one of them is skilled as hell.

Mister J
04-07-2009, 10:57 PM

Where are you seeing those projections? I saw one that had Lawson in the top 12. I personally think he's the best player in college basketball (better than Griffin) and I don't give a damn how short he is. 5-11 isn't short enough to hurt you when you can blow by defenders the way he can.

John Wall is being projected as the #1 pick in the 2010 draft. He's already said he will only go to college for one year. UNC has a 4-star point guard signed for the 2010 class and they currently have 4-star freshman Larry Drew. If they get Wall for one year, that would give Drew another year to develop. From what I saw this year, he's got pretty good speed (nowhere near Lawson but I would say he's similar to Heinrich at KU for Roy Williams), but of course he's a typical freshman who makes a ton of mistakes.

His recruiting is probably better than it's ever been. And it's going to keep getting better thanks to his latest championship. UNC is known as one of the best feeder schools for the NBA. I can't count the number of "can't miss" prospects who went to Duke and flamed out. Greg Paulus ended up on the friggin' bench and look at how Lawson turned out. Is Josh McRoberts even playing for Duke anymore? He was the #1 overall recruit a few years ago and he flamed out. Even the great Duke players flaked out in the NBA, such as Jason Williams or Laettner (he had a good career but he was nowhere near the star everyone thought he'd be). UNC has had the likes of Jamison, Stackhouse, Carter, Jordan, Worthy, Perkins, et al. They have a ton of prestige and mixing that with Roy Williams' coaching style, it creates a recruiting juggernaut especially in an era where the top level recruits are looking for a program that can hone their skills for the NBA. Williams certainly gives his players a good chance to show off every night with that 90+ points per game that they average by running up and down the floor on every possession.

The only program that will be able to keep up with him over the next decade from a recruiting standpoint is possibly Calipari at Kentucky.

Mister J

McRoberts is toling away somewhere on the Pacers' bench. He had bust written all over him. And you're right, as great as the college dynamic is between the two schools, Duke can't think about touching Carolina when it comes to the next level.

It's getting to the point where even the college dynamic isn't close. Hansbrough beat Duke all 4 years at Cameron Indoor. You never would have seen that back in the 90's for the likes of Stackhouse. I think Coach K's recruiting evaluation is slipping. He keeps bringing in really highly rated players that don't even pan out at the college level, never mind the NBA. Carolina seems to have had a really good run of recruits that have panned out at least at the college level, even if their height limits them in the NBA (May, McCants, Hansbrough, Ellington, Lawson, etc.). Every one of those guys were 5-star players and they all turned out great at the college level. Seems like Duke has had a ton of 5-star guys come through there lately that have flopped.

redfirebird2008
04-07-2009, 11:36 PM
Hell, when you think about it...UNC has had 4-star players that have turned out a lot better than some of Duke's most highly acclaimed 5-star recruits. Danny Green was a 4-star player and he was an integral part of them winning the title while Greg Paulus ended up on Duke's bench by the end of his career. Deon Thompson was a 4-star player and he's turned out far better than McRoberts.

Every one of those guys were 5-star players and they all turned out great at the college level. Seems like Duke has had a ton of 5-star guys come through there lately that have flopped.

That's because they aren't really 5 star players. They become five star players after the commit to Dook. True story.

Cousins just committed to UK. Hopefully, Wall will do the same. I think he was a Memphis lean before Cal came to UK so hopefully he comes here. Cal has been on him for a while... UNC is just now knocking at his door.

Yes, he was leaning towards Memphis. His mother apparently likes UNC and so did he when he was a kid. But his high school coach apparently has a grudge against Williams because Williams ignored one of his past players, so he tried to prevent the recruitment. But Williams went around the coach and is talking directly to Wall. Either way he's one and done regardless of where he goes. Duke is also trying to get him, but I don't think they have a shot in hell after UNC won a title and has proven an ability to get players ready for the NBA. It's bound to be down to Kentucky and UNC for Wall at this point.

Speaking of Kentucky, Meeks really surprised me with his intent to declare, even without hiring an agent. The same goes for the guys who decomitted. I'd be salivating for a chance to play under Calipari .

BTW, Kaiser...LOL at your comment about Duke's "5-star" players. I think you're probably right. I'm convinced similar crap goes on in football too. We (Texas Tech) had a QB named Chris Todd who our coach Mike Leach offered and he was a 1-star recruit at the time Leach offered him. Leach used to be the OU offensive coordinator and Stoops has paid pretty close attention to Leach's scholarship offers through the years because Leach is a great talent evaluator. Anyway, as soon as Leach offered, Stoops turned around and offered Todd a schollie in hopes of stealing him from underneath us. Instantly, literally overnight Todd's rating went from 1 to 3 stars. Absolutely hilarious.

It was pretty funny too because Stoops used negative recruiting against us as an attempt to get Todd. He promised Todd that Tech would never beat OU in the next 4 years. Well sure enough, we beat them in 2005, which was Todd's freshman year if I remember right. I remember seeing Todd mock Stoops on the field after the game. Held up his index finger, "That's one." LOL. He ended up transferring to Auburn because he realized he was going to be sitting behind Graham Harrell.

I think Wall comes here because we don't have a PG.... we would literally be THE man. The one and only.

I think Meeks comes back. This is just a chance for him to do some workouts or whatever is allowed to be done so his eligibility isn't lost and get some feedback from NBA scouts so he knows what to work on for next years draft.

The one and only PG but definitely not the only good player. Kentucky has some big time talent with Meeks already there and also their incoming recruiting class, which will likely include the top guys who previously committed to Memphis.

It all depends on which situation he feels would work best for him. Calipari would definitely give him a great chance to polish his skills, but we've seen that Williams' system can also give elite level PG's a huge stage to showcase their talent. All things being equal, I would think Kentucky would be the more logical choice since Calipari has been actively recruiting him the entire time rather than at the last minute. But if he wants to be near his mom, then that brings UNC firmly into the picture.

I don't know, Kaiser. I'm having a hard time seeing Meeks not being 1st round. If he gets drafted, he locks himself into that position (and salary scale). Whatever improvement he gains if he comes back won't be putting more $$$ in his pocket. I do see your point on the feedback though. I'm thinking he might be able to gather that and still have time to undeclare and preserve his eligibility.

I should note that, outside of work earlier today, I've been pretty much inebriated since Carolina won last night. My recollection of Draft eligibility/NCAA rules might be a bit off right now.

Someone on CPs said that Cal was the only coach to send a one and done PG to the NBA. I think that helps out UK...

X Henry is supposedly going to Kansas.... Cousins just committed. I'm not sure of any others... so that leaves Wall.

If anyone can steal Wall from UNC... which I don't like saying that because UNC is coming late to the party so they would be stealing them from Duke or UK... then its Coach Cal.

UNC is definitely the potential stealer in this instance rather than the victim. They didn't have any contact with him up until April 3rd or so. I really think Duke has no shot in hell against the likes of Calipari and UNC. Both of those systems have proven far more NBA-driven than Duke's "penetrate and jack the 3-ball" system.

Floyd gave cash to Mayo handler (http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news;_ylt=AuxkR77eQHw_yuQ8tE3MdtQ5nYcB?slug=ys-floyd051209&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)

LOS ANGELES – USC men’s basketball coach Tim Floyd made a direct cash payment to a man who helped deliver O.J. Mayo to the Trojans program, according to Louis Johnson, a former member of Mayo’s inner circle.

Johnson, a one-time Mayo confidant, has told both NCAA investigators and federal authorities – including the FBI, IRS and U.S. Attorney’s Office – that Floyd gave at least $1,000 in cash to Rodney Guillory, a man who allegedly lavished Mayo with improper benefits while the guard starred for the Trojans.

Such an act would constitute a major NCAA violation for USC, which is the subject of an ongoing three-year investigation into alleged improprieties in both the football and men’s basketball programs.

I wish I could be surprised by this, but everything about Mayo's 'recruitment' screamed that probation looms.

Let the hammer come down. He'll wish he'd taken the Arizona job then. :hehe:
