View Full Version : Movies that did not live up to their great trailers

Ever see a preview/trailer for a movie and imagine it as being the best thing you've seen in a long while? You hype it. Watch the trailer a million times. Can't wait for the film to come out. When it does, you're there at the theater eagerly awaiting for the film to start. You walk out crushed; the film disappointed you...and it didn't help that the trailer made it look much better than it actually was.

Here are a few of mine...

Spider-Man 3
Quantum of Solace
The Strangers

What about you?

Jumper, Hancock to name a few and X3

Great thread... I too have noticed the rather worrying increase in great trailers for terrible movies... I think it may have began with the Matrix Reloaded trailer... I musta watched that trailer 5000 times... Drooling.
We all know how that one turned out... "Systemic anomaly"? euucchhh.

Any of the SW prequels.

X3 was a huge let down compared to the trailer.
I like the Star Wars prequels. When I saw the trailer for The Phantom Menace way back in 1998, I was so pumped. It definitely did not live up to the hype.

the teaser for Superman Returns was amazing. The movie, even though I liked it was weak compared to it.

Yeah Spider-man 3 is a big one.

I'll add Sin City.
I like the movie, I still own it. . . but the trailer itself was just sooo much better than the film.

Even though I don't consider SM3 a bad movie (a disappointment, but not a terrible movie), it did not live up to the trailers at all.

Superman Returns. I straight up almost popped a boner when I watched that trailer, which was eventually destroyed by the actual film. I havent been the same since.

Thanks alot, Bryan Singer. :cmad:

Superman Returns, for sure. Brando's voice over Williams' score with Superman floating out in space was ****ing epic.

Just one more thing that made me want to like Superman.

the sad thing was, the first teaser was so damn good with that track from DJ Shadow.

And honestly, Ryan Reynolds has been suffering ever since then, which is a shame. (though I've heard that the Nines was good)

This is simple. SM3. Oh, my God. One of the best teasers of all time and very good trailers just made this film look to be great. A bad film? Not at all. I think fanboys hate it because they were so damn hyped and it let them down, then dismissing the film completely, failing to reconize anything credible or good about it.

November Rain
12-21-2008, 06:20 AM
but the teasers were simply 'THAT' Good.

The only time a spidey film could get that kinda reaction again would be a teaser for a sinister six movie.

do you imagine how much chaos around the boards they will be if they did that?

What about Babylon A.D.? Just kidding :hehe: I liked the trailer mostly because of the Clint Mansell tune.

crashed for about 6 solid months

it will also be the most underwhelming superhero movie ever. no one can do the six justice on the big screen.

it'll go from like 350 million opening weekend to nothing in 3 days.

I wouldn't say that. It is possible. But frankly, I don't think we'll see the Sinister Six happen. Some of them should be developed and explained, and you have to do that without killing them off.

I like Spidey 3,but I must admit that after seeing those trailers I had such a nerd erection. Seeing the symbiote and Venom was a dream come true!!! I expected this whole dark and twisted film with a huge Spidey vs. Venom battle at the end. After all this time I can honestly say that while I was let down by the final version,I still like the movie alot. So,no way would I call it a major disappointment.

But one trailer that comes to mine is Godzilla(98). Anyone remember that first trailer? God,that was freakin' awesome!!
This museum full of tourists and kids looking at a T-rex skeleton and hearing the guide talk about how it was the largest and most terrifying predator ever to walk the earth. Then, the building falls silent as rumbling shakes the foundation. Suddenly Godzilla's foot comes crashing through the top of the museum and crushes the T-rex as we hear him roar....

Sweet. Too bad the film was a HUGE disappointment.

Agreed, but moreso with Episode I than the other prequels, though I never expected much with Episode II to begin with. I was satisfied (despite Hayden Christenson's acting) with Episode 3.

He's just so good in everything... even if the movie sucks.

I must confess, I loved Definitely Maybe.

I Am Legend

And there's me thinking this was going to the first Will Smith film that didn't suck... :csad:

I actually liked I am Legend, despite the first 15 minutes of the film is just him riding around and doing normal activities.

I'll do just this year & last year

Indiana Jones; And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls

Okay, okay, no TDK fanboys will beat you up in this forum.

Thanks for mentioning Hancock Darkfly, watching it now, decent movie but that twist was crap, and it was way too short.

I watched Hancock and after an hour, I was impressed with the movie. But the twist came, and from the moment Charlize Theron threw Will Smith outside the house, slamming into a Car, the movie took a nosedive. It just got awful after that. That's why whenever its on Starz, I only watch the first hour lol.

The Unborn
Taken - good movie, but I expected so much more
I Am Legend teaser
Daredevil
Smokin' Aces

I know how you feel. Taken wasn't bad, but it was missing a stronger villain, and it felt like Liam Neeson was going through the motions. I felt like it was too easy for Neeson's character and there was never really anything really in his way.

Seeing as how the trailer sucked, the movie itself must've been awful.

The teaser annoyed me so much because they screwed themselves over at the teaser.

Why is her unborn brother a litttle kid? He should've been either a undead baby, an undead fetus (try and imagine in your head), or a undead guy her age.

I just hated the obsession with creepy little girls and boys as villains.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I was so disappointed with Wolverine, even after Gambit was in teaser (for all of 5 seconds). Gambit and Deadpool were the reasons I saw the film, so do not even get me started on Barakapool.

I Liked it, but Terminator Salvation

Judging from the last trailer I should have been saying "best of the year so far", not "I liked it, but should have been better still"

I felt a little screwed over as I Christian Bale was not only lame, but he wasn't even the main focus of the film.

Biggest one for me.

Who knew that the final product would have Jack as druggy as ever, licking rocks and imagining miniature versions of himself in his hair, Tia Dalma grow to gigantic size as some goddess, and the deaths of Governor Swann, James Norrington, and just-introduced Sao Feng? Downright sucked, it did. Only thing I thought was okay was the ending. Sure, it was a little disappointing, but I thought it was the best way to tie off all of the poor decisions they made in the plot earlier. Cutler Beckett's demise was pretty awesome, Jack Sparrow lives to fight another day, and the world will live in fear of the saying "Will Turner's Locker" from now on.

Harry potter and the Half blood prince
I'd like to say that one just because of what I expect from it, despite the preview being pretty cool, but I haven't seen the full movie yet.

ANGER MANAGEMENT. Not that I expected much from a Sandler picture, but there was that brilliant moment in the trailer where the title goes:
WHAT IF YOUR LIFE
WAS IN HIS HANDS?
Cut to Jack Nicholson arch his eyebrows and grinning while the soundtrack comes up with Roger Daltrey going 'YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!' in Won't Get Fooled Again.

NOTHING in the movie lived up to that.
