Was a new retelling of Superman's origins necessary?

So this is the revamp we were due like back in 2004...freaking 4-5 years late, at that, and right in time for FC's conclusion.

Anything that washes away Birthright is OK in my book. To have it done by Johns and Frank is awesome, though.

Finally a worthy origin for Superman! This is going to kick all kinds of ass!

This will be something special definitely. Although I was thinking, I'd like to see Morrison write Superman's origin. He's already written the Omega, how about the Alpha? But I'm just as happy with this team.

It sounds promising. And I love that they are keeping the crystal Fortress of Solitude, and Jor-El and Lara also remind me a lot of their movie versions.
I think Frank is a great artist, I really like his art, but I have a problem with the way he draws faces, though. Superman's face, in particular, seems creepy sometimes. :csad: And they all look so much alike, like siblings most of the time. Plus, as much as I love Chris Reeve, I wish Superman looked more like you know, comics Superman and less than Reeve. Oh, well. I hope the writing rocks.
And PLEASE, please, make this so good that they don't have to do another origin story in a long time.

I'm def. gonna be getting this. Johns is the best Superman writer we've gotten in years.

I couldn't disagree more. Frank's art on Superman is the best in the characters history. And no flesh and blood person exemplified Superman more than Christopher Reeve. I love that Frank draws him as Reeve, because when I think of Superman I see Chris Reeve. But to each his own I guess!

I love the adult Superman he draws, a lot. But his versions of a younger Clark Kent are kind of creepy.

Same here. I'd prefer Morrison writing this, but Johns has been doing a good job and I'm looking forward to it.

What was wrong with Birthright?!Where do I begin... soul vision, Kal as a vegetarian, it's just not the origin that Superman needs. Johns is here to fix that little problem!

I think there were bigger problem with Birthright than Clark being a vegetarian. And I don't think making Clark a vegetarian IS a problem anyway.
The story was fine and exciting but I think all the concepts it was playing with ... mmm, no. I think the so-called "definitive" origin for Superman is J.Byrne's. I think it only needs to be updated. That's all.

I'm glad Johns is finally making an attempt to sort out what this post-Infinity Crisis Superman's origin is suppose to be. It looks like it's just a rehash of the Mort Weisinger Silver Age version mixed with Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie.

I'm curious if Clark and Lex's friendship in Smallville will remain intact in this new origin. That was one of the things that I did like in Birthright; was that they restored Clark and Lex's friendship. Anyway, I can't wait for this to come out!:woot:

To answer the stupid question in the initial post: ABSOLUTELY.
We long-time fans have wanted a clean origin for years. I rejoiced when I heard Johns would be on Superman, and the work he's done has been classic, the best I've ever seen the comic.
Secret Origins will be a classic retelling of Superman's origin that will finally blend elements from various media (the good ones, mind you) into a new, timeless origin for the greatest comic book hero of all.
I can't wait.

I can't wait. We are on the same page, Zombie Supes! I'm ready for the definite origin as only Johns can tell it!:woot:
What is this, the third origin for Superman since the Crisis? Geezus.
Ah well, I trust Johns to write a good beginning for him. I liked Man Of Steel and hated Birthright, so I'm hoping it incorporates more of the former than the latter.
I'm really looking forward to it but call me crazy the flashback scenes in Action #850 made me hope Renato Guedes could do this with Johns. I like Frank a lot I think he draws one of the best Superman's ever. But his young Clark Kent is seriously scary looking like the kid is possesed or something he's just creepy. Superboy looks like a flat chested short haired female gymnast at a cos play expo, yikes.
