Mr. Mxyzptlk robbed him of his powers by using some magically created red Kryptonite during the Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite storyline. he lost them again during the Final Night storyline when the sun was extinguished by the Sun-Eater, and most recently he lost them at the end of Infinite Crisis and didn't get them back until the One Year Later storyline Up, Up and Away!.
