For everyone snatching up a Blu-Ray copy of "The Dark Knight" there will be a Live Community Screening of the film on December 18th in which the first 100,000 participants will be able to chat with Director Christopher Nolan while watching the movie.

The link above is to register for the event.

in which case Fan boys will complain and piss him off to the point that he doesn't come back.

Oh yeah, this will be just great.

PS: Can someone tape this or transcribe it (i don't know how it works) and post it online for those of us without blu-ray?

I fully agree with Anjow...about the morons who will most likely ask him stupid questions.

I seriously wonder how much WB paid him to do this. Since he seems to have integrity and a level of seriousness to his work and how he approaches it...I don't see him as the type to freely volunteer for a gimmick like this.

From most reports, when he does an appearance like that year at WW when they showed the first footage of TDK, he didn't really seem like he wanted to be there.

If any fanboys honestly complain all he has to do is say well you know I could always call Schumacher back. Other than that as long as he's not surrounded by idiots it should be interesting to see what people ask him about the movie.

it'll be heath heath heath covo.

I'm not hating on Ledger or anything, but that's 99% of what people are gonna ask him.

Most of which will be reporters swindling their way in trying to get a sound bite from him.

So how exactly does this work? You register the day you get the Blu-Ray and the first 100,000 get to be on the live chat on Dec. 18?

CFE
12-03-2008, 02:47 PM
Well the site linked in the OP is where you can register right now, using your BDLive information.

Then you pick up your Blu-Ray copy and, if you were one of the first 100,000, you're in. Just pop in the Blu-Ray with your BDLive account up and ready to go (I'm assuming, I'm not on BDLive) and you'll be good to go.

I agree I going to try to get into the community screening but I fear there will be stupid people who say things like OMG this movie rocks. Or other things that add no value to the event. I had a similar experience when AOL used to have actors from up comming movies come on and chat with fans. I remember the blade 2 chat with welsley snipes it sucked.I don't even know if that was really him. And fans asked stupid questions and got kicked from the chat it was just not fun lol. Anyway If anyone wants to add me in case we all get into the event my BD-Live id is mr. para-normal. Add me!!!

A list of the most annoying questions Nolan will encounter on that session:

- OMG Mr. Nolan! I'm your biggest fan!!
- I hate the new Batsuit! Why did you change it??
- Why isn't there a director's cut?
- Why don't you have any deleted scenes of the Joker on the DVD?
- Why aren't there any extended scenes and/or outtakes on the DVD?
- Why did you include so little behind the scenes material on the DVD?
- Will there be a re-release in the future with more extras?
- Will there be another release of the movie with a different cut?
- Did The Joker mouth 'six'?
- Why didn't you include any extra features about Heath Ledger?
- About Heath Ledger...
- Are you going to do a third movie?
- Are you going to cast Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin and Angelina Jolie as Catwoman in a third movie??
- If you use Riddler, are you going to cast Johnny Depp??

I wonder if there is something that will filter these stupid questions out so Nolan doesn't have to deal with the obvious and moronic questions.

I registered but I doubt I'll be able to participate in the chat. The questions listed before would definitely not be the ones I'd ask but I'd like get more insight on what he was hoping to achieve with certain scenes. After reading his article describing the interrogation scene, it made me curious what he envisioned for the rest of the film.

Got this off of Aint it Cool:

Went to the Dark Knight Blu Ray release event with Chris Nolan last night.
It was a great time and thought I'd send you guys my write-up. If you use it, call me LoquaciousMuse and link to my blog, All Things Fangirl (http://www.allthingsfangirl.blogspot.com (http://www.allthingsfangirl.blogspot.com/)).
Before tonight I had never even HEARD of BD Live. Apparently it's Xbox Live for Blu-Ray? If you have a BD Live enabled Blu Ray player or a PS3, then you can connect to the internet and partake in the potential awesomeness. The Dark Knight is Warner Brothers' first foray into this format and it's shaping up to be reason alone to invest in a Blu-Ray Player.
First of all, it comes with tons of content, waiting to be streamed for free- the newest Warner's trailers, episodes of Warner Premiere Motion Comics (Mad Love! Shadow of Ra's al Ghul!) and more. And because everything is streaming, you can get to the content faster and it doesn't take up any hard drive space. One of my favorite features of TDK BD Live is the commentary option. With a computer & webcam, you can record YOURSELF giving commentary for the whole movie or just a scene here, a scene there. Then, when people go on BD Live, they can select your commentary to watch with the film. Now, it's doubtful that I would ever watch a stranger's commentary, but a friend's? Certainly. Maybe even someone famous? A blogger, a writer, a director, an actor, a critic, a technician - people not involved with the film who would have no business doing commentary for the dvd, but would have an interesting perspective, making their thoughts available to the general public? Yes, I'm into that.
Also available is partaking in live text commentary - a bunch of people watching the movie at the same time, texting or typing their thoughts as the film goes on. So a whole group of friends, all in different parts of the world, could watch The Dark Knight together and read each other's commentary.
And you heard it here first - on December 18th, Chris Nolan is doing a live commentary with 100,000 Dark Knight Blu Ray owners. He will host the screening and answer questions as it goes on. With 100,000 people, it will most likely get a little crazy and who knows if Chris Nolan will tell me how exactly the Jim Gordan thing works (trying to keep this post spoiler free...), but it still sounds pretty damn cool to me. In Nolan's words, "It'll be interesting to see what it's like...the potential of it is very exciting." (Note: It had previously been announced that at some point Nolan would do a commentary, but only tonight was the date of this chat confirmed)
After learning all about BD Live and again wishing I had lots and lots money to spend on Blu Ray players and Blu Ray discs and giant HD televisions, we got to spend a half hour with Chris Nolan. Here are some highlights from the discussion.
-It was "a shock" to Nolan & his team that TDK was so successful i.e. is the 2nd highest grossing film of all time
-He really studied how to approach a sequel - what works versus what doesn't. His goal was to "provide a new experience, stretch in all directions" He wanted to delve deeper into the characters, both old & new and stage the action and story on a "grander scale", using an "operatic sensibility"
-He wanted the film to connect to what we as an audience are concerned about. What would impact us, what would excite us. In the end he realized he was tapping into his own "fear of anarchy" and that the Joker was a "distillation of that force"
-In his approach to the entire franchise, Nolan wanted to use a great ensemble a la Richard Donner in Superman. Get a cast that is wholly talented, all of whom bring a lot to the table. This was the mindset in casting Batman Begins & was carried through to Dark Knight
-In reference to Heath Ledger, he had "Something to express that was very much in line with the character in the script. It just meshed"
-Compared the home Blu-Ray version of Dark Knight to the big screen IMAX version and said that the advent of Blu-Ray is a vast improvement technically and important for the translation of IMAX to home video. Now people at home can see the difference between shooting in IMAX and shooting in 35mm in a way that even audiences who saw TDK with a 35mm projection didn't get to experience. Blu Ray points out the "grain structure" and "focus anomalies" and will actually expand in size the same way the IMAX print did, all of which are important for optimal TDK viewing.
-Drew inspiration from Frank Miller's work in the 80s - more serious, more contemporary
-If he made a third film, it would be for no reason but the continuation of story. He is currently looking into where the story would go and if it needs to go there. He maintained that it's very hard to make a movie of this scale (and specified he wasn't asking for our sympathy, drawing a laugh from the crowd) - it's two hard years and you gotta love it. One of his biggest fears is getting halfway through making a film and realizing it's unnecessary and he doesn't want to make it anymore. If there is a third story that needs to be told, there will be a third film, but nothing is set in stone or a given.
-There is no 3 hour cut anywhere - no deleted scenes. He, John Nolan & David Goyer would cut scenes before they ever made it to the screen in what Nolan calls an "aggressive editorial approach." Their criteria was that every scene needs three reasons to be in the film or it's out. This made for a difficult time in the editing suite as every single scene was essential and could not be removed.
-The music ended up playing a huge role in pacing and storytelling
-Shooting in IMAX is about "clarity" and "sharpness" not being big. It's about providing a "sense of the screen disappearing."
-He was shocked that no one ever tried to work with action films in IMAX before & would love to shoot a film entirely in IMAX. The problem with this? An IMAX camera is very noisy, SO noisy in fact that all the dialogue in every IMAX scene had to be looped in post - a feat more difficult for the younger generation of actors, who have less ADR experience. Would ideally like to shoot a hybrid film where all MOS scenes are IMAX are all scenes with dialogue are 65mm.
-When translating a story to a screenplay, the first question he asks himself is "What is the point of view?" For Memento, the protagonist couldn't remember what had happened right before, therefore telling the story backwards seemed a natural device. In TDK, there are many characters and a gradual rise in tension, so linear works best.
-The videos shot by the Joker were in fact shot and mostly directed by Heath Ledger. For the first video, Wally Pfister came in and checked the lights, the sound guys set up a few extra mics, everyone hid around the corner and they let Heath play. Ledger had been planning to direct and was an incredible collaborator with a great mind. Nolan trusted him implicitly. Ledger's work on the first video was so fantastic that Nolan wasn't even there for the second video shoot with Anthony Michael Hall. He gave Ledger the camera and said "do whatever you want." Apparently every take Ledger did was different, but always in line with the story and always fantastic. Where are those on the dvd, Mr. Nolan?!!
-Something was mentioned about scanning 8k...I couldn't follow the technical speak. Which is sad for me.
-He studied English Lit in school and is a self taught director. Started playing around with a camera at age 7 or 8. Believes in the Kubrick school of thought that the best way to learn how to make a movie is to make one.
He then bid us goodbye and a screening of Dark Knight began. Have I mentioned I really love that movie?
Also an important bit of information - Missed TDK in IMAX the first time around? The Dark Knight is being re-released on January 23rd in IMAX theaters across the country. If you haven't seen it yet, I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and buy your IMAX tickets the moment they go on sale.

I can still see the ignorant 'fanboys' who refuse to accept the truth and still come at Nolan with 'But-!' I'm just happy to hear it straight from his mouth.

Aside from the usual questions being answered, I love the tidbits he mentioned especially of having Ledger run away with a camera for those Joker scenes when he makes threats at Gotham! You can definitely feel how Ledger embodied the role in the footage.

Well they say that people will be able to record their own commentaries via BD Live and they will be uploaded for other people to view (i.e. you can listen to a complete stranger's thoughts and opinions on TDK) so hopefully Warner will upload Nolan's finished commentary to this system too.

I hope they do. :(

I find it interesting that Nolan stopped doing commentaries; his first three films all had commentaries, but none since. It's disappointing because he's a very insightful guy.

TDK is the first bluray disc I've bought, so I'm kind of confused. I signed up on the WB site, put my disc in, and clicked on BD-Live but it said it was loading for about 20 minutes and then the loading icon went away but the screen didn't change. My internet connection says its ok and I was able to download an update to my player two days ago, so why can't I access BD-Live on the disc? Is anyone else having this problem? And for someone who's already used BD-Live how long does it usually take to access and what should come up on the screen?

I got accepted and I'm in Canada. Maybe it's just for North Americans.

I'm in Canada too, and when I originally registered I was hit with that same error message.

So I simply changed my IP address and used a U.S. postal code to register, since the website can identify your location and reject the user based on their IP address country of origin.

Sneaky? Absolutely, but that's how I watch TV show streams from American network websites.

Still worried myself. Can't hear the commentaries at all. Spent 35+ minutes on the phone today with Samsung trying to fix it. They have no idea. I just hope it's not the same situation tonight.

I'm a little worried too. Last night I could access the BD-Live stuff, but couldn't get a commentary going.

One thing I'm trying is a new 8 GB SD card, and will format it in the player.
(May not make any difference whatsoever...)

Only thing the Samsung rep mentioned is that it COULD be a buffering/internet speed issue. In that my connection might not be fast enough to stream something of that size. Sucks anyway.

No, all you should have to do is select whomevers commentary you want to watch/listen to, and it should automatically do so. Can you even access the commentary selection page, like can you see David Goyer's image/commentary file?

Axtech

Every time I try watching a commentary on there, the buffering is terrible. Like 20 seconds of viewing vs. 1 minute of buffering. I've given up on it entirely. I don't know if WB's servers are really slow or if my PS3's Internet connection is too slow. It shouldn't be though. I have a 8 Mbps cable connection.

Nope. I just selected a commentary, and after about 30 to 50 seconds the movie started to play with the commentary going just fine.

Bats
12-18-2008, 07:39 PM
I can access the commentary page no problem. When I select Goyer's, for example, it'll start playing (movie audio is fine), where I can see him fine. But there's no audio. And after 20-30 seconds, he starts skipping. Not sure if I remember the other commentaries skipping but I can't hear any of them.

no it is, I believe he meant that it showed Fox was taking them in a new direction, thus a new building

I don't think he intended it to be the same one (I hope not). What I THINK he meant was that Fox made some changes to the company which included a new building/location.

Anyone know if the questions being asked are live or previously submitted?

I sent mine in last week and redid earlier today. None have shown up yet.

I makes sense that they moved it though, since its so close to the end of BB, the parking in from of Wayne Tower must still be under construction.

On whether he kept any props from the film: Nolan kept a majority of the masks from the bank heist, as well as the slate (he does that for all of his movies).

On what his first love was - directing or writing: "My first love was directing. I started writing in order to have material to direct. I now enjoy both."

Is he going to make a thrid one and if he is who is going to be the villian and who does he consider to play the role

Yeah. He referred to it as a slate.

Now I've missed the chat. Thankfully by the sounds of it this live chat is not that great. At least I can play Drakes' Fortune now.

To be fair, there could have been a lot more dumber questions. My only complaint besides technical issues are that the questions are bland. I think with really dumb questions it would be more exciting but in a bad way.

Just throwing this out there: I'm using a PS3 and I was watching it just fine.

I say was because I decided to stop it a while ago. I found myself not watching the movie because I wanted to keep up with the Q&A. But really, it was like reading an extremely long, boring, and unprofessional interview. Not something I wanted to do for the next 2+ hours.

Q: I love the sky hook what made you come up with the idea?
A: We were looking for a surprising end to the action scene. And one that would suggest Bruce Wayne's ability to access international resources.

Q: Were the building interiors shot in Hong Kong?
A: The building interiors were shot in London. Other than the lobby of the building, which was shot in Hong Kong.

Q: How awesome was it to be the first director of a Batman movie to feature a hero that could finally turn his head?
A: It was very exciting to see Batman finally turn his head. This was the end result of years of research.

The car chase was the most technically challenging; his favorite was the interrogation scene between Bats/Joker.

On the grand scale of the film: It is difficult balancing so many characters. the key thing is to not lose focus on the forward momentum of the narrative

Q: Are you your own worst critic?
A: No, Rex Reed has that honor. (LOL good one Nolan)

The ending scene is Nolan's favorite, and was pleased at how it turned out.

Q: Did the joker use a real video camera for the video tape?
A: Yes. The video was shot by Heath using a camcorder.

Q: Do you have a favorite Batman story from the comics?
A: Year One and Long Halloween.

Q: How do you feel about the casting rumors for the third film?
A: it is always amazing to see how much interest and enthusiasm there is for these characters. that's the reason we are able to make these films on such a grand scale.

Q: How was it working with Sen. Leahy?
A: It was a lot of fun working with Senator Leahy. He was a very gracious performer.

Q: Where did you get your inspiration for the assassination sequences? Where the judge and comissioner were killed?
A: The assassination sequences, I think now that I look at them, finished are very influenced by the Godfather films.

Nolan confirms again that the mannerisms weren't in the script for the most part. Heath so deserves that damn Oscar it's not even funny. The voice and mannerisms were entirely his creation.
