a nice paycheck will do that.....

The individual stars signed on knowing that they would not be the center of attention. "These kinds of events require sacrifices from the talent," Mischer said. "Nobody will be coming here and being paid what they're normally paid, or bringing their glam squads or their entourages."

And what's your point? It's no different than past Presidents. Obama is spending approximately the same amount that Bush spent on his second Inaugural ($150-160 million). Bush spent $115 million on security alone. Obama's Inauguration is not "change we can believe in." It is more of the same. It's not shocking though. He's been triangulating out the ass during the Presdiential campaign. But it's also unfair to single him out as if he's doing something worse than other Presidents when he really isn't. Bill Clinton had 13 Inaugural balls. Obama is scheduled to have 10, the same amount as Reagan and both Bushes.

The $150 million, that is being put out there for 2009 is for the celebration itself. They have not included the front end celebrations of the train, and concert yesterday.

Kel, incorrect. The 2005 Inauguration cost roughly $157 million, not $115 million. $42 million of it was raised from private donations by Bush. The other $115 million were tax dollars from Maryland, Virginia, and the rest of the country. The estimated private donations for Obama are around $45 million, which leaves, once again, $115 million in tax dollars from Maryland, Virginia, and the rest of the country.

OBAMA: POLITICIAN, POP ICON, OR BOTH?
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/01/19/obama-politician-pop-icon-or-both/

In a framed photo for sale at one of the many souvenir shops in Washington, Barack Obama looks more like a movie star than a politician as he exits a vehicle in a black suit, red tie and sunglasses.

The caption of the image, showcased in the front window of the store, reads, "Presidential Cool."

"He's a man of the people," said Vicki Starcher, who traveled from Norfolk, Virginia, to help set up the temporary store during the inauguration.

"I think the difference is with Obama, he has so much of the younger backing, BET … and the hip-hop community," co-worker Jasmine Robinson chimed in.

Ebony magazine listed Obama was as one of the "Top 25 Coolest Brothers of All Time," alongside Tupac Shakur, Muhammad Ali, Jay-Z and Marvin Gaye.

The memorabilia decorating the streets of Washington and the images on magazine covers are a symbol that, to much of America, Obama is more than just the next president. He's also cool.

Cool enough to attraction millions to the Capitol; cool enough to have designers release a special line of inaugural items; and cool enough to have stars such as Beyonce, U2 and Stevie Wonder perform at a free concert to kick of the inaugural events.

That is including ALL days, we do not have those numbers yet for this year. $115.5 for the day of.

Some have private donorship for this year around $50 - 60 million.....we won't have a true cost for awhile.

Whatever the cost, its too much, and really not needed.....people were having this same discussion in 2005. The cost of these things is just too much.

There are some sources that have this year's party will cost 4x that of 2005......so who knows.....

SECRET SERVICE 'COUNTER-SNIPERS' TO BE OUT IN FORCE
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/01/19/secret-service-countersnipers-hunt-for-real-snipers/

Look up at any presidential event and you're likely to see them: men dressed in black, armed to the teeth, looking back.

It's no secret; they're with the Secret Service.

On Tuesday at the inauguration, members of the U.S. Secret Service's elite countersniper unit will be out in force, taking roof-top positions along Pennsylvania Avenue and elsewhere as the presidential motorcade glides past throngs of people for the swearing in of Barack Obama.

The Secret Service doesn't mind you knowing they are up there. In fact, their mere presence at the inauguration has a deterrent effect, they say.

But they are mum about many other details, including how many teams will be deployed, how long they work and about their custom firearms.

Unit commander Lt. Bernard Hall jokingly calls the weapon a JAR — "Just Another Rifle."

Since the unit formed in 1971, the unit has never had to fire a JAR to safeguard a person they are assigned to protect.

"When you look at that parade on the day of the inauguration, every building that we will pass by … has been surveyed, and that is done by the Countersniper Team," said Secret Service director Mark Sullivan. "They will be familiar with every building; they will be familiar with every potential threat."

But the absence of gunfire — a welcome absence in this line of work — doesn't mean they have never identified or mitigated a threat, Sullivan says.

This whole thing just makes me so nervous! Do you guys think that he'll get out of the car and walk a portion of the parade route? Or remain in the car the whole time?

redfirebird2008
01-19-2009, 11:42 AM
There are some sources that have this year's party will cost 4x that of 2005......so who knows.....

That's because it's misleading, irresponsible and partisan attacks. The comparison is $160 million to $40 million. The problem with that is they aren't including the tax money spent for Bush's. They're only talking about the private donations. You can't get any more misleading than taking tax expenditures out of one but including them in the other. In order to spend 4 times as much as Bush, Obama would have to spend $620+ million.

alittle bit of history....

No president walked until Jimmy Carter, since Carter all have walked except Reagan (which was strange, since loved going into the crowds), in his 2nd parade he did get out at the end.

So as much as it has become tradition, I just don't think its a good idea.

Some idiot on the Politico messageboards yesterday kept saying he couldn't wait until President Biden is sworn in. I've been debating whether or not I should tip off the feds or dismiss it as some loser on a messageboard, but the fact that people are even joking about it makes me nervous as hell. It's admirable that Obama wants to shake hands and speak to large crowds but I really hope he cools off on the large crowds until 2011.

The jokes are pretty despicable. I remember earlier this summer I was sitting in a board room and my Republican co-workers were talking about the election. One of them was complaining that the RNC sent him a letter with really presumptious language about him donating to their organization. He kind of had the attitude that they need to stop biting the hand that feeds them. Apparently the letter came across pretty arrogant to him. Anyway, another guy randomly chimed in with a joke that "Obama will be alright if he gets a bulletproof vest..." and he laughed at his own joke. The guy who was complaining about the RNC quickly scolded him and told him not to even joke about it because the Secret Service takes it seriously.

Perhaps in the future we should change the January 20th rule to "the Saturday closest to January 20th." Seems ridiculous that it's happening in the middle of the week. Or even better, get rid of the celebration altogether and simply have the swearing-in in the Oval Office.

Technically he is getting to work. CNN has an article that says 20 of his senior staff are going in vans to the White House as soon as he is sworn in to start working. But symbolically he's not getting to work because he will be partying even if his staff is working.

But if you put in your vacation time well in advance, they can't let you go for that. If you slack off and put it in a week before, then they can.

That's why I request my vacation time after I come back from my vacation. I took my vacation last year the last week of July. 2 weeks later, I put in a request for the same week in July '09. That way I know for sure I have that time off and it gives my boss more than enough notice.

He resisted a bulletproof vest until he was nominated despite the Secret Service's insistence on it. From my understanding, he first wore one at the Democratic Convention and has been using it ever since.

Speaking of this, I think it is idiotic that they enacted a law in 1997 that says no former President will having protection beyond 10 years, starting with George W. Bush. Anyone think Obama will be an exception to the rule? For crying out loud, he can't even go to public events including that concert yesterday without bulletproof glass around him.

Nah, it's Preston Hollow, I lived right down the road. They are nice homes, yes....but alot of retired people live there. They have homes that run from millions all the way down to $200,000 homes......his home is very modest......In comparison to River Oaks area here in Houston where his dad lives.....this is upper middle class, extreme high end.

It's a ranch style home, not a mansion by any means. Several neighborhoods are a part of this area, and it would just be for their neighborhood....The gate will be built (If the Dallas city council votes for it, which they will) at the road that meets the main road, its not all the way around the neighborhood. Hell, take a few earmarks off of any bill, and that would pay for it. lol

WALL STREET'S INAUGURATION RALLY
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/01/19/wall-streets-inauguration-rally/

Optimism about Barack Obama's first 100 days as president is running high, but Wall Street's post-inaugural celebration may well be short-lived.

"I think there's going to be something of an Obama honeymoon for a few weeks," said Terry L. Morris, senior equity manager at National Penn Investor Trust. "But I think there's still a lot of pessimism out there about the economy."

Since 1932, stocks, as measured by the S&P 500, have gained an average of 1.6 percent in the first 100 days of a new president's term regardless of the party.

The S&P 500 has gained 0.9 percent on average under a Republican president and 2.2 percent under a Democrat like Obama, according to research by Standard & Poor's chief investment strategist Sam Stovall.

While a gain is a gain, a 2.2 percent rise following a year in which the S&P 500 lost 38 percent - and saw its worst year since the 1930s - does not suggest the rallying cry of a new bull market.

In fact, Wall Street could very well see the same market reaction that briefly followed both the November election and the start to 2009, said
Joe Arnold, wealth manager at Dawson Wealth Management.

"Both times, the optimism had an emotional effect on the stock market for a few days or weeks," said Dawson. "But then the happiness wore off and people returned to the reality that we are still in this crisis and we don't know when it's going to end."

Similar to the first 100 days, stocks tend to perform better for the rest of the year when the Democrats are in power, according to S&P. In the subsequent eight months, stocks on average lose 7.7 percent under
Republicans and gain 4.8 percent under Democrats going back to 1932.

"Election year history favors a Democratic president, but nothing is certain in this world except death, taxes and volatility - of share prices and emotion," wrote Sam Stovall, S&P's chief investment strategist in a recent note.

I think true change comes from a change in mindset....not necessarily about change in faces.... IMO, if the people were efficient, effective, and proven.....why would you change that, for the sake of change?

And a city of civility. Bitter partisanship is one of the things the public is sick of. We are all Americans. What the hell is wrong with having civil disagreements rather than this insane need by the extremes of both sides to demonize other Americans?

And I really do think that if he's transparent in how he governs, that will be a pretty big change. The last two administrations seemed to be kind of secretive.

I agree. There's a college professor on another board I read who was commenting that he's never seen his students so excited about a new president who now want to get involved in things that they weren't six months ago. He said it was a sense of community that he hasn't seen since JFK took office when he was a kid, and that he's praying that it doesn't end the same way it did for him.

Honestly, I think he's just going to be a fairly average president. But if him being there inspires people to get involved in their communities, or inspires someone to reach heights they didn't think they could reach until they saw him do it and realized that they could too, then I see nothing wrong with all of this.

CHENEY WILL APPEAR IN WHEELCHAIR FOR INAUGURATION
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/19/cheney-in-wheelchair-for-_n_159255.html

Vice President Dick Cheney pulled a muscle in his back while moving boxes and will be in a wheelchair for Tuesday's inauguration ceremony.

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said Cheney was helping to move into his new home outside Washington in McLean, Va., when he injured his back.

His doctor recommended that he needed a wheelchair for the next couple of days.

Perino said that Cheney is OK otherwise.

"The vice president is looking forward to being there for tomorrow's historic inaugural activities."

AS THOUSANDS CROWD DC'S METRO SYSTEM, WOMAN HIT BY TRAIN
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/01/20/as-thousands-crowd-dcs-metro-system-woman-hit-by-a-train/

A woman was hit by a train at the Gallery Place-Chinatown stop at 9: 25 am by a red line train headed towards Glenmont. “Reports are that the person is still alive but we don’t have any indication as to how badly hurt they are,” said Metro spokesman Doug Karas.

He did not know how she ended up on the tracks, and he had no reports yet as to what happened to cause the accident.

Right now, red line trains are stopping at Judiciary Square and Farragut North, and turning around. Red line trains are not stopping at Gallery Place and Metro Center, the two downtown stations that serve as the hubs of Washington's Metro system.

So apparently Hillary isn't going to be confirmed by the Senate today because of the jerkoff Senator from my state, John Cornyn. He is forcing it to go to roll call despite the fact that she received a 15-1 vote during her confirmation hearing. Talk about partisan politics. If this guy ever wants to run for President (I've heard he does), he better be prepared to have this bite him in the ass.
