Why Are You Crouching Spock?

I think the person most relieved that Bush is leaving office today, is Bush himself. He looks giddy, to just get the hell out of dodge.

Recon in the long run history will be kinder to him than present day, opinion wise

Especially in a job of that pressure...

I imagine MOST people would want out at that time

You got that right. I would run off the podium after the next Pres was sworn in with both middle fingers in the air.

Thomas Jefferson wouldn't recognize the Political Landscape that exists today, and probably would be disgusted by it.

Sure he would, being a Republican, he would be disgusted with his party and the amount of control the government has, but how would he feel about the equality, the liberty that Americans now enjoy, that the founders have shed blood and tears for.

Sure there are a lot of things wrong now, but still I am sure they had no idea what a great nation they were building with not only 13 but 50 states, all united as one nation and now with a president who in his time weren't even regarded as human beings. That's an amazing thing. In that I believe Jefferson and many founding fathers would be proud.

Umm... Thomas Jefferson wasn't a Republican. Abe Lincoln was the First Republican President.

He wouldn't think that Americans HAVE Liberties, he may be happy with the fact that Slavery has ended, and that the Democratic Processes still works, but he would be ashamed by the General Ignorance of the People of this Country, he would be disgusted by the Money Hungry Bail Out wanting Corporations, and the Money Hundry Welfare wanting Individuals. He would be disgusted by the Power the Federal Government has over the Individual, and the unwillingness of that Government to relieve the People of Unfair Taxation. Did you know that the Average American works from January 1 to May 1st Just to pay his taxes for that year? Thats 120 Days a year and Growing. Did you know that the American People Revolted against Great Britian over 15 Days of work a year! As a person who has been critical of Obama's speech making skills on account that if you hear one, you've heard them all, I've gotta say that this was a downright fantastic one.

It actually didn't sound like all of the previous Obama speeches that resorted to slogans and what not, it actually sounded like an original speech. And the original speech itself was great as well. Obama sounded like the leader we need. He sounded inspirational. He sounded as if he can deliver what he promises.

I wasn't watching it. I was only listening. I read that he was reciting it from memory instead of from an index card. The cadence he used was awkward. He did a long pause after he said Obama's name, so Obama went ahead and began reciting his name. Then Roberts left out "of the United States" when talking about the office of the President. That was a major flub. Obama is a pretty big fan of history, so I'm sure that threw him off just as much as it threw me off listening to it. I've been watching YouTube's of Reagan's, Clinton's, and Bush's inaugurals recently and every single time the Chief Justice stated the full title of the President. Roberts butchered it.

When Bush got in the helicopter, people in my office were yelling "SHUT THE DOOR! GO! LEAVE!!!!!!"

I'm with Excel, it's bittersweet. I could not stand him as President, but as a person he does seem like a decent man.

Roberts butchered it.

frankly...who cares...I probably would have been drooling up there

Support for the LGBT Community
"While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect." -- Barack Obama, June 1, 2007

Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: In 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported and made up more than 15 percent of such crimes. President Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, President Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law.
Fight Workplace Discrimination: President Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees' domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. The President also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.
Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage: President Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.
Repeal Don't Ask-Don't Tell: President Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation. Additionally, more than 300 language experts have been fired under this policy, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. The President will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.
Expand Adoption Rights: President Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. He thinks that a child will benefit from a healthy and loving home, whether the parents are gay or not.
Promote AIDS Prevention: In the first year of his presidency, President Obama will develop and begin to implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities. The President will support common sense approaches including age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception, combating infection within our prison population through education and contraception, and distributing contraceptives through our public health system. The President also supports lifting the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. President Obama has also been willing to confront the stigma -- too often tied to homophobia -- that continues to surround HIV/AIDS.
Empower Women to Prevent HIV/AIDS: In the United States, the percentage of women diagnosed with AIDS has quadrupled over the last 20 years. Today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. President Obama introduced the Microbicide Development Act, which will accelerate the development of products that empower women in the battle against AIDS. Microbicides are a class of products currently under development that women apply topically to prevent transmission of HIV and other infections.
Since the LGBT community has been lambasting Obama lately (implying that he's somehow a homophobe), perhaps they should stop sweating the small stuff and realize that he is going to do more than any President has ever done to advance their cause.

"The shows were pre-taped several months ago to accommodate air time because the inauguration is an all day event", says an executive. "It's a shame that many of the performances leaked. So what next? Thinking hateful things becoming considered hate crimes?

How about someone, in the heat of the moment says "I'm gonna kick that ******'s ass". Is that considered a conspiracy to commit a hate crime?

The market's drop continues, now from the 150s to the 200s

BTW I disturbed with this part:

"Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control - and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart - not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good."
This is one of the most assine things I have ever heard.

So what should we do now? Punish the prosperous - take the money from them for the "common good"? Favor the unsuccessful (aka banking bailout), because they soooo obviously know how to use it more efficiently?

Without getting cliche, who watches the watchmen? Barry wants to remake the constitution on top of which. Jezzz louis... :whatever:

Yes, Michelle's father died before they got married. I remember this because Obama wrote about it in his second book. He made a promise at her dad's funeral to take care of Michelle. He wrote in his book that he realized they had already become a family even though they weren't married yet. They didn't have Malia until 6 years into their marriage. Obama's father, meanwhile, died in 1982.

BREAKING NEWS!

SENATOR KENNEDY COLLAPSED DUE TO A SEIZURE THAT LAST 'SEVERAL MINUTES'.

SENATOR BYRD WAS ALSO REMOVED FROM THE LUNCHEON AFTER BEING OVERCOME WITH EMOTION BY WHAT HAPPENED TO SENATOR KENNEDY.

:csad:

Okay. That explains why I was hearing mixed reports about whether it was Ted Kennedy or Robert Byrd that was taken out on a stretcher. This is shocking.

I missed the inauguration too because I'm at work, but I've been reading the articles online to keep a tab on the ceremony, and it is funny to me that Chief Justice Roberts screwed up the swear-in. At least Obama was aware of that error and didn't recite the words until Roberts corrected them later. Gonna Youtube Obama's inauguration speech later since I heard good things about it.

He didn't have any lines in it that were instantly "historic" so to speak, but depending on his Presidency, they could turn out to be viewed that way. His line against the terrorists was powerful but eloquent. If he catches Bin Laden, people will remember that line forever. If his policies can start to dig us out of the economic gutter, his line about choosing hope instead of fear will be remembered forever. But if he sucks as President (50/50 toss up at this point), those lines won't be as meaningful.

Even so How can you do worse than Bush:whatever: You re already deep in the cave all you can do right now is go up.

One thing I m worried about is that the people have way to much high expectation. I think what Obama is trying to make the people understand is that he is not the savior. He needs the peolpe to make sacrafice, and I dont know if the people are ready for that...I hope cause Usa is in deep S***.

He didnt do it..
The market is simply reacting to him.

Now if you believe that is direct blame...then fine, Obama is guilty.
If not...then its not

I want the US to succeed, because I am subject to it also.

But in his benefit, the market tends to dip on new presidents
