And so, with the new year upon us, millions of Americans are about to either subject themselves to the hassle of doing their own taxes by hand, a lesser hassle of buying tax software and doing it themselves, or they are going to pay someone to do it for them.
Which one are you?
For me, there's no way I'm going to pay someone else to do my taxes for me. And, I'll be danged if I'm going to buy software that tells me something I already 1) know or 2) know how to find out. I'll do my taxes by hand.
After all, I don't have "CPA" at the end of my name for nothing, you know. :cwink:
I hate the IRS. May a Pox be on their House.

We already have a FairTax thread :o

Jman, this isn't about the FairTax, this is about the Current Tax Code.
Why do you always have to bring up the FairTax in every thread you are in? :o

You did pay the Government, you just paid them enough to get them off your back for one more year.
Do you have Income Tax Withdrawn from your Paychecks? You paid them then, it's a Falacy that if you don't owe anything more, that you didn't pay anything at all. tsk, tsk.

You mean you've never had to write a check to the IRS because your tax liability was greater than your withholding? Or, is it because your tax liability was actually $0 (and you received a full refund from the IRS)? There's a big difference betwixt the two.
I've had to pay a lot the last 2 years, hopefully this year it's corrected and I paid just enough to get some back, or even. I hate the IRS.

Well of course I am not a moron, I know I am paying taxes throughout the the year, that's why I said I don't want to pay any more taxes.
I suppose I should have been clearer and said I have never had to pay any taxes to the Government when I did my taxes but I didn't think it was necessary. People are nitpicky today.

I used to use tax preparation software. When I was singing in my blues band, however, the taxes started to become a little more complex so I found a good CPA. He saved me a couple grand more than what TurboTax was telling me my returns would be for that same year. I've used him ever since and he's always made it more than worth the $120 it costs to have my taxes prepared.

Attention lower-income Hypesters:
From the IRS Website:
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program
The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $42,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing. To locate the nearest VITA site, call 1-800-829-1040.
When I was in college, I did an internship as a VITA preparer at a community credit union. It's a good service. If you can't really afford software or a paid tax professional, you should definitely consider it.
More information on the VITA service and what you need to bring with you to have your taxes done can be found here:
Free Tax Return Preparation For You by Volunteers (http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=107626,00.html)

Were is the option for "Not going to do it, hope I don't get caught."?
18% of the "Taypayers" in this country don't file. 1% of all 141 million Taxpayers ever get audited. You chances of not getting caught are very high.
Though, if you don't pay taxes, I pick up your Slack, and THAT pisses me off. :cmad: So don't do it!

Are you in a non-state-income-tax state and itemizing your deductions?
If so, you generally have three options for deducting your state and local sales taxes:
1. If you saved your receipts for the year, you can use the total of those sales taxes paid for your deduction.
2. You can use the deduction tables starting on page A-11 of the instructions for Schedules A and B (found here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040sa.pdf )
3. You can use the sales tax calculator found here: http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=152421,00.html
My advice: Check all three (or at least numbers 2 and 3) and see which one allows for the largest deduction. For me, that was the sales tax calculator.

Tax season honestly makes me feel like a friggin idiot. As much as I try to read up on taxes, I feel like I just don't understand it. I had to call my state comptroller with a question about a form today, and even when he asked me basic questions such as, "did you itemize your deductions for federal taxes in 2007?" I felt like he was speaking a foreign language. This will be my first year actually having to pay when I file my taxes because before I was in college and could just apply for my refund...so it should be an interesting process. Ugh :csad:

With the FairTax, you would never need to pay someone to do your taxes again, AND you never even need to file. It's so simple and easy to understand the Actual Bill is only 128 Pages long. Our current Tax Code is over 70,000 Pages long.
Or in Pelosi Math: It's over 20 Millions Pages long!!!
