The Official Indie Music Thread

I think that there needs to be somewhere for people to discover less mainstream but still AMAZING bands. I'm sure that there are a ton of people who like 'obscure' bands like me. Even if you don't, it's honestly worth it to check some out. You may not like all of my recommendations but there is definitely something for everyone.

When I say alternative, I mean a very large array of different music styles.

I'll start with a few good bands for everyone to check out/discuss:

Arcade Fire
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/allisonmb/2744679.jpg?t=1231526639
Arcade Fire is an orchestral rock band which formed in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The band is known for their live performances and their use of a large number of musical instruments; in addition to the guitar, drums, and bass guitar, the band's members also play instruments such as the piano, violin, and viola. Arcade Fire were featured on the April 4, 2005 cover of Time Magazine’s Canadian edition, and hailed as a band who “helped put Canadian music on the world map”.

Crystal Castles
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/allisonmb/16067033.jpg?t=1231527102
Probably the most 'alternative' band I'm going to post today, Crystal Castles are a Toronto based duo consisting of multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. Crystal Castles' music is easily recognized by their heavy use of samples and distorted female vocals. Their musical style has been described as having "ferocious, asphyxiating sheets of warped two-dimensional Gameboy glitches and bruising drum bombast pierce [the] skull with sheer shrill force, burrowing deep into the brain like a fever"
MZGzT4aslTo

Regina Spektor
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/allisonmb/397417.jpg?t=1231527704
For fans of Feist or for simply fans of beautiful voices and piano, Regina Spektor is exactly what the doctor ordered. Spektor's musical style has drawn many comparisons to fellow singer-pianists Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, as well as the vocal stylings of Björk. Spektor possesses a broad vocal range and uses the full extent of it. She also explores a variety of different and somewhat unorthodox vocal techniques.

Shout Out Louds
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/allisonmb/308397.jpg?t=1231528143
Shout Out Louds are an alternative indie rock band from Stockholm, Sweden. Often thought of as 'pop in it's truest form', Shout Out Louds put ''Pop Bands" on the radio to shame. If you like Coldplay, you'll definitely approve of this super-fun and amazingly talented band.
3XDFdXy8-0c

Tokyo Police Club
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/allisonmb/371591.jpg?t=1231529081
A Canadian post punk indie powerhouse, Tokyo Police Club has generated a ton of buzz over the past while. With various high profile appearances under their belt, including a guest spot on Ugly Betty, Tokyo Police Club is definitely a band to keep your eye on. They've been compared to Born Ruffians and Bloc Party, but they offer something of their own as well and it's not to be looked over.
767XpOvT5FU

Final Fantasy
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/allisonmb/49895.jpg?t=1231529549
Owen Pallett is a solo violinist who has also toured with the above mentioned Arcade Fire. He is the sole member of the band Final Fantasy, and no, I don't mean the game. Pallett has been noted for his live performances, wherein he plays the violin into a sampler controlled by foot pedals, which then loops back one or more of the previously played musical phrases as he plays additional parts simultaneously, a technique also used by other musicians such as Feist.
NB05Lt3VbNg

Well that's all I feel like doing for now but everyone please check these bands out and I would LOVE to hear some of your opinions and own recommendations- I'm always looking for new bands to check out!

And of course, I will be posting more in the future.

I take it to mean non-mainstream

well, i'd have two issues with that:

1. labels should describe the music in some way. if it means "non-mainstream" then that doesnt describe the music, just its status in the general public.

2. alternative IS the mainstream. the biggest "rock" radio stations in the country (please note rock being in quotations) feature "alternative rock" (why would anyone want an alternative to rock anyways?). its just a poor genre label, a lazy one.

but whatever, its just semantics i guess. im not really into the music anyways, so...but i guess it can bug me when good bands get lumped under these lazy and irresponsible labels.

Star

It's true. It would also be lazy to lump them all into 'pop and rock' though? I don't know, it's really hard.

It's true. It would also be lazy to lump them all into 'pop and rock' though? I don't know, it's really hard.

no, i think pop and rock are perfectly acceptable labels, more so rock. i mean, rock and roll is a sound. you hear the sound and its like, yeah thats rock and roll. pop music, a sub-genre of rock, can admittedly be a bit more vague. obviously, it meant popular music, which can mean anything. but i think it came to have a sound attached to it. pop may have originally been short for popular...but it came to just be pop....the 3 minute upbeat song that has....pop. ha ha. it makes sense to me.

i mean, if you really wanted to, you could really call out and question any genre label. but most are rather suitable and are at least an attempt to describe the sound of the music. i just dont see that in labels such as "alternative" and "indie".

Cmill216
01-09-2009, 07:48 PM
I just think alternative is such an incredibly broad term. What is it an alternative to? You can have alternative rock, alternative pop, alternative hip hop, etc. But that still doesn't really describe the music all that well.

Take Crystal Castles. I've listened to some of their stuff before. If I had to describe their music, I wouldn't describe it as alternative. I'd describe it as something along the lines of electronic rock. To some, even that might not do their sound justice. But I think it's better than labeling anything that doesn't fall under a simplistic, corporate label as "alternative".

One man's alternative music, is another man's pop music.

thats like saying one man's roast beef sandwich is another mans vanilla ice cream with sprinkles. i mean, i guess music labels arent quite as definitive, but still. generally, most music can be pretty clearly defined. i think now a days most people are just too lazy to properly define the music, and i really think thats because they dont have the musical knowledge to adequately define it.

a lot of people today claim to love music, and im not really calling that into question. but i think more people who make that claim should have a better working knowledge of music's history, and appreciation for it. not that they need to love it all or anything like that, nor be any expert, but just have some sort understanding and appreciation and knowing where things came from. i have great respect when people do that. i try to do that myself, and always try to dig deeper for a greater understanding of it all. its helped me have a greater appreciation for music and enjoy it more. but sometimes i do wonder how many people really know where their favorite music and bands came from? do they care to know? i dunno. maybe i'm the dick. ha.

I liked the first too albums the most. The last two have been okay.

alternative is just a broad term for slightly left field music in America.
In the UK we use indie even though most of the bands are on major labels and have different sounds. From Coldplay to The Strokes they all go under the banner term of indie over here.

I suppose this could be the indie music thread? Or does that not work either?

And I would highly recomend Metric (http://www.myspace.com/metricband), The Arkells (http://www.myspace.com/arkellsmusic), Ted Leo (http://www.myspace.com/tedleo), and Stars (http://www.myspace.com/stars). There are quite a few more, but I'll think of them later.

I've heard through the grapevine that Emily Haines has been struggling with some drug problems, so sometimes at concerts she comes off badly. The last time I saw them was at a McMaster frosh week concert and they were pretty good. However, they ended their set early because the idiot frosh didn't seem to be huge fans of Metric.

And Stars has become my favourite band. I'm so mad I missed their Olympic Island gig with Death Cab :cmad:!

For any LA fans out there, LA radio station Indie 103.1 is now dead, and heading to online only.

The sad thing is that the ON AIR DJs got laid off. I just hope that Steve Jones (of the Sex Pistols) gets a new home.

My take on it is that I felt like it was coming since November; there was a huge shift in the programing (Henry Rollins getting moved to Saturdays, cancellation of the niche shows). Also, the tracks are more 'mainstream' as well. I don't know what to think.

BUT MUSIC IS NOT DEAD. FAR FROM IT. But it'll be hard to be online only because there are so many other sites other than Indie. And without the talent, now what?

That's what happened with Radio 3 too! Except the DJ's kept their jobs (as far as I know) since the CBC is technically a government job so they can't fire people at thier own discretion. But it used to be a show within a CBC radio station and then it all got moved to the web. What a sad state of affairs. I guess the only good part about being on the web is that the can be a lot more free in terms of content.

I just listen to a radio show online for 103.1 (I guess they're keeping the station's dials). Ever since the station went off air, it was just all music (like the old days with no DJ) but he actually went on with his show.

It seems like some of the DJs (like the metal rock host and Henry Rollins) are coming back to do their shows..for free because they believe in company so much. And I guess they're trying to adjust to the online format, which means more freedom. But now the problem is accessibility. It has been mentioned that internet is easier to get now and hopefully, it'll be open to anyone with a tuner (like an iphone has one)

Franz Ferdinand's third album is out next week. I've already heard it, and to be honest, it's their best yet.

The Night Marchers are a great new band. It's basically the Hot Snakes lineup, with Gar Wood moving from bass to guitar and a new kid taking over on bass. If you're a fan of singer/songwriter/guitarist John Reis' previous bands, Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes or the Sultans, you should definitely check this out. It's got the swagger of RFTC with the thick chords of Hot Snakes, but a little more rock and roll than post-hardcore. I highly recommend their debut album "See You In Magic". I've seen them twice already and they're just a really fun band to catch live.

It definitely harks back to their "wall of sound", fuzzed out Source Tags & Codes days, but it's not as good.

Better than So Divided, and probably on par, IMO with Worlds Apart.

Isis Unveiled is a great f'ng song.

A couple of bands I've been listening to lately are The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Jay Reatard. The Pains play really poppy shoegazer rock and Jay Reatard plays spazzy pop-punk (with acoustic guitars layered over crunchy hooks and keyboards) that is insanely catchy. I recommend them both. You should be able to find them on MySpace.

I got a chance to listen to an advance copy of the new Metric record. I'm pretty sure it's leaked online, as well.

Metric fans should be EXTREMELY pleased with this album. It's a little less electro happy, and more guitar driven. But it picks right back up where Live It Out left off.

"Help, I'm Alive" , "Gold Guns Girls", and "Gimme Sympathy" are amazing.

I had never heard of either of these bands prior to seeing them open a show in '07, but they've been in heavy rotation on my end since then:

Fair To Midland - embedding was disabled, so here's a link to one of their songs. The studio stuff isn't so easy to find on the Tube, but if you're interested in looking them up elsewhere, "Walls of Jericho" is another good song by them.

REALLY? I can't believe anyone actually likes that album... one time through and the album is completely disappointing. Metric is clearly making a bid for fame, and going about it in the most boring way possible. Fantasies is tired and forgettable. Really bad.

The only song I can deal with is "Stadium Love", and even that song is CLEARLY just them wishing they were huge so they can have a whole stadium ranting along with them

I'm all for bands getting more popular and I do believe Metric deserves this, but their album is such a pathetically obvious attempt to get more mainstream that it makes me cringe.

I saw them in concert a few months ago and I was already aware that they were wishing to be bigger, because they performed a lot of the new songs, and it was like they lost their soul

Not cool, Haines.

Fantasies review from All Music:

http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:a9fixzq0ldhe

Metric's third full-length album, Fantasies, is a glossy, slick, and so-clean-you-could-eat-off-it slice of modern rock that may scare off some of the band's early fans due to the unrepentant commercial nature of the album.

Anyone who isn't repelled by the band's professionalism and ambition to sound perfect will find it to be quite good. You can't begrudge them taking a shot at the big time, especially when the result is as good as this. And it's not like they are doing anything radically different here; it just sounds freshly painted and shorn of any defects.

In other words, it sounds just like an album by one of the bands that inspire them, finely tuned machines like the Cars, Garbage, Blondie, and Missing Persons. Or conversely, they sound sort of how you'd imagine the ideal Idol contestant's album would sound -- huge with an excess of glittering and hooks.

Indeed, most of the songs on Fantasies wouldn't sound out of place on a Kelly Clarkson record; they are finely crafted, totally focused, and powerful pop songs that blend '80s new wave, '90s alt-rock, and timeless pop songcraft into compact pop nuggets.

If "Sick Muse" were given a push on radio, it could easily be a big smash for the band. The hand-waving chorus, the pulverizing drumming, and the smooth-as-glass production are perfect for the airwaves.

Quite a few others sound like they too should be blasting out of car radios on summer streets; the laser beam-tight "Gold Guns Girls," the shimmering "Front Row," and the propulsive "Gimme Sympathy" all fit this bill perfectly.

The few ballads that dot the album like frozen teardrops betray none of the warm introspection that Emily Haines brought to her solo albums; her singer/songwriter demons sound like they've been exorcised once and for all here. Instead, they sound big enough to reach the back row of a stadium, as does the whole album. That Metric title a song "Stadium Love" gives you a clue to the ambition of the band.

There's nothing small or careful about Fantasies -- it's a full-on bid for pop glory and it's a smashing success.

This is the British band's debut on legendary indie label 4AD and they remind me a lot of The Ladybug Transistor or some of the quieter, fuzzed-out Yo La Tengo songs from the "Painful" or "I Can Hear a Heart Beating..." albums. Really mellow, catchy, beautiful songs full of atmosphere and subtle effects.

I would kind of compare the voice too Death Cab for Cutie or Belle and Sebastian but instrumentaly like Los Campesinos.

I love the independant mucisians; their songs are so much less cliche than most of the mainstream stuff.

For example, Dala, one of my favorite bands EVER, have a song about driving to Winnipeg (which, apparently, some people do do, for whatever reason :P )

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead used to be so much more than "generic indie". Whatever that even means.

Built to Spill's new album, There is No Enemy is absolutely fantastic.

Listen, all of you. Listen!

Sarcasm was the key to my comment.

I used to like Metric, but this new song they got on the radio gets on my nerves. I've seen Bloc Party twice live and they're really good. Recently, I've been listening to the genius of Sparklehorse, Dinosaur Jr. , Spoon, Pinback, Bon Iver, Tiny Vipers and Monsters of Folk

I officially  you for this, not enough people realise just how good Bon Iver is. I mean For 'Emma, Forever Ago' is one of the most beautiful (and heartbreaking) albums ever made.

Bon Iver is indeed legendary. Re:Stacks is my fave song.

That's so weird, I am actually listening to Re: Stacks right now, but I've gotta admit I actually prefer Flume, I may not understand the lyrics, but the passion it's sung with means that doesn't even matter. It's kind of like when you see people crying whilst listening to whale song.

I should've guessed. It's just that Trail of Dead have had their share of mediocrity in their career, so I could see it as a serious comment.

Strongly recommend these guys. BC Orientering and Camilo (The Magician) are standouts. I think they still have the free download of the week on iTunes.

EDIT: and this band. http://www.myspace.com/heyrosetta.
