Suprised we don't already have a thread (or we do and i just haven't looked :csad:) on the greatest, in my opinion, band in the world! :D Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie have almost 50 years in the business and they're still rocking better than ever.
Anybody lucky enough to have seen them live?

might work better in the Music and Books forum :)

They are, along with The Beatles, the greatest and most important band in rock and roll, and completely define the raw, raunchy, rebellious attitude rock and roll was founded upon.
And yes, I've seen them live, twice. Best ****ing live band in the world.
Can't really pick a favorite, but "Brown Sugar" would probably come close if I had to choose.

Can't You Hear Me Knocking has one of the sickest guitar parts I have ever heard. Another golden song from Sticky Fingers is the simply titled, 'I Got The Blues'. Proves why Jagger is one of the best rock and roll singers of all time, thanks to his broad sense of styles and the way he can pull them off.
Another great, odd little song they did is from Between The Buttons. 'Something Happened To Me Yesterday'. Great 'duet' between Keith and Mick....really strange tune.

And very well said Aekhyron...that's the same with most big bands. Sure, the hits are the most accessable, but not nearly the most interesting.

Yeah, but if a poll were to be made including "Fingerprint File," "All Down The Line," "All About You," (one of The Human Riff's best vocals), "Connection," "She Was Hot," "B**ch," "One Hit (To The Body)," (which is notable for some searing guitar work by Jimmy Page), "When The Whip Comes Down," and other great obscure Stones numbers, then people would go WTF and complain that all the hits were missing.

Isn't that why it wasn't released for so long, because The Stones didn't like the fact that they were overshadowed?

yeah, they were well aware that the who kicked their ass on their own turf, so to speak. they were a bit too embarrassed to release it.
Silly Stones--they made a lot of stuff to be embarrassed of later on

I'm going to pick Sympathy for the Devil, but Shattered is a very close second. Btw, how can the "ode to NY" song not be on the list?! It's too good to be classified as "Others", dammit! :cmad: :csad:

I know that it'll be a LONG list if you were to put ALL their songs on the poll for they DO have plenty of awesome ones. But still... no SHATTERED?! You're getting an infraction for that, mister! :cmad: :oldrazz:

I saw them in 2006 and I was amazed. The energy that they have on stage still is better than most bands half their age. One of the best shows I've ever been to.

I wanted to see them when they were in Seattle last year but I couldn't get the tickets. I've watched a couple of their concerts on the screen and the energy looks amazing! That's just incredible coming from a band whose members are over 60 years of age!

The Stones were the first band i ever got into, i dug out my bro and sisters old record player when i was 15(only one speaker working), and found 'Beggars Banquet' was one of their records they's left behind. I put it on and 'sympathy for teh devil' was the 1st track, i remembered it from a movie i saw when i was a lot younger aclled 'The Jericho mile' about a prisoner who wanted to get released to run in the olympics. I was hooked from then on, got recordings of compilations from a friend and then the following xmas got my 1st stereo with 'Exile on Main st'(my brother's choice for me, he bought me the stereo) and 'Goats head soup'(my choice).
I'd rank my fav stones albums thusly:
1. Exile on Main street
2. Beggars Banquet
3. Sticky fingers
4. Let it bleed
5. Goat's Head soup
6. Their Satanic Majesties Request
7. The Rolling stones(1st album)
8. Aftermath(have not heard this in many years, had my copy stolen)
I have things like 'Black and Blue' and 'Steel Wheels' but only rank a couple of songs from them, 'Beast of Burden'; 'Waiting on a Friend'; 'I can always hear you sigh'; 'Slipping Away'.
I've heard 'Emotional Rescue' but have only liked about two songs from it, I've always been meaning to get ahold of 'Some Girls', heard it a couple of times at my friends house, sounds like their last classic album.
'Undercover of the night' is one helluva track and the last song they did that I think holds up to their 60's and early 70s work.
There is a Stones concert film someone sent me last year that is amazing, 'Ladies and Gentlemen..The Rolling Stones', that for some reason was only ever released on home video in Australia. It covers songs from 'Exile' 'Sticky Fingers', 'Let it bleed' and some early ones, truly the Stones at their peak. Mick Taylor's slide guitar playing on 'All Down the Line' has to be seen to be believed, it's a shame Richards and Jagger didn't give him enough credit on songs or else he would've hung around longer.
I never get tired of listening to 'Exile', i listen to it all the time.

US-tour in 2009!?
THEY’VE got a combined age of 258 but the hardest working band in rock ’n’ roll aren’t sitting at home in their tartan slippers.
The Rolling Stones are dusting off their guitars for a tour later this year.
Mick and Keith, both 65, *Ronnie, 61, and Charlie, 67, are set for a multi-million-pound pay day by going on the road again.
And Ronnie Wood is keen on the idea so he can earn some cash to offset what looks to be a costly divorce from wife Jo.
The OAP rockers have drawn up plans for the American tour, which can now go ahead after a proposed Faces reunion fell by the wayside.
Ronnie was all set to perform with his old band, headed by Rod Stewart, later this year but those plans have been canned.
A source close to the band said: “There is this offer for a US tour on the table. It’s a good offer.
“They may be well into their 60s but the lads can still out-rock most of the bands around today.
“They live well. Mick is a very healthy eater and Keith only has organic meals. They are in great shape for their ages. They live for performing so they will relish being back on the road. It’s what they first got in the game to do.”
The band has performed hundreds of concerts with 38 tours across the globe in the past 46 years. The source continued: “Now that the Faces reunion seems to be off, Ronnie is free to perform with the Stones.
“Keith is particularly close to Ronnie and told him it would be a great way for him to get back on his feet, both personally and *financially, after all that’s happened over the past several months.”
The source added: “It will be great motivation for Ronnie because he loves playing live. The gigs will go down a storm I’m sure.”
It has emerged Ronnie is facing financial difficulties after spending his £2.5million share from the Stones’ 2007 Bigger Bang tour.
He has also sacked his manager Jamie, his stepson, who is the son of estranged wife Jo. Jamie handled all of Ronnie’s affairs.
Ronnie has been living it up in LA with 20-year-old toygirl lover Ekaterina Ivanova.http://www.express.co.uk/features/view/83297/Veteran-Stones-all-set-to-hit-the-road-again
I'm so going to see this! :p

^Yeah, it gets overlooked and slagged off I think because of the impression they were trying to do their own Sgt Pepper. Hey, I think Jagger was(and according to one Keith Richards book I read, the Victor Bockris one, that was exactly what was going on, Richards regretting Jagger had ever been introduced to acid), but that didn't stop some great songs and riffs appearing on it, even the Bill Wyman song is pretty good. Citadel is a great one, love that riff, I play that and '2000 light years' sometimes through one channel so you don't get the vocals, they sound great as instrumentals.
About the only one I can live without is 'sing this song all together pt2 , see what happens', it's a bit of a bongo led filler instrumental, one for the very stoned, Jagger even has that cheesey intro line' where's that joint?', just in case you were wondering what mood to set for that one.
Also, I think critics were impatient waiting on the Stones doing a definitively great album, that came next with 'Beggars Banquet'.

For some reason I love "Sing This All Together Pt. 2." The album itself holds an interesting place in their catalogue, for sure. "She's A Rainbow" is one of their best lighter songs. A great single from that time that would've not been out of place on that album was "We Love You," which featured Lennon and McCartney on backup vocals. In fact, I think that song and "Dandelion" both originated from the same sessions as the album. "2000 Light Years From Home" is also awesome, especially Brian's use of mellotron. It also, surprisingly worked well live, as it was played on the 1989 Steel Wheels tour.

Outside of Paint It Black The Stones did absolutely nothing for me until about a year ago. Started listening to a few bands that were influenced by them, and when I went back and re-listened to Aftermath they finally clicked for me. Aftermath,Let It Bleed, Beggar's Banquet, and Their Satanic Majesties Second Request are all amazing records.
As for favorite song... Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man, Mother's Little Helper, Gimme Shelter, and She's a Rainbow are all up there for me.

Yeah, you're right, I'm sure I read 'We Love You' almost made it onto the album.
'She's a Rainbow' is one of fav Stones songs, always get a rush when that gets played.
I'll have to hear that live version of '2000 light years sometime, thanks for the heads up on that, didn't know they did that then.
Ah, yeah, I still like 'STATprt2', I can go for long jams like that, I suppose I was just thinking that the critics at the time wouldn't have went for it so much as they waiting for a definitive Stones album at the time and wanted strong songs, no more messing about with covers or jams like the long one on 'Aftermath'.
