Cripes. I remember when bowl games were looked at as rewards for a good season. Now, they're practically a matter of fact follow up on the season and just a transparent tool of revenue generation. "Hooray! We're 6-6!"

Boise State linebacker Derrell Acrey took a moment from the postgame fiesta and declared that one day his Broncos weren’t going to play in just any BCS bowl. They were going to play in the BCS bowl.

The question I have is...who loses by having more bowls?
Seems to me it's a victimless crime. It gives low level college football teams the chance to end their seasons on a higher note, provides revenue for the schools, gives each respective fan base something to go to and provides more football to watch.
If you aren't interested in Florida Atlantic playing Rice, don't watch.

They may have a hard time stopping it.
If Boise goes undefeated next year, sweeping Virginia Tech and Oregon State, and walks into the Post Season 23-0 - it would be REALLY hard to keep them out.
Also, when you take into consideration that Boise State will likely end this year ranked 3rd or 4th, return 20 starters and now have 2 BCS Bowl Titles in 4 years - they are going to have to in the top 5 next year to start the season.
Also, this year was bad for Boise because we had 5 undefeated teams. That likely won't happen again next year.

Technically the only bowl game that isn't needless is the National Championship game.
What's the purpose of the Fiesta Bowl? To pit two college football team into an interesting match up so that football fans can watch and enjoy (while the Schools and Bowl Sponsors make millions).
Whats the purpose of the Yankee Bowl? To pit two college football teams against each other in an interesting match up so that football fans can watch and enjoy (while the Schools and Bowl Sponsors make millions).

No, their purpose is that of all bowl games; to further foster the spirit of good sportsmanship and healthy athletic competition. Money is no concern. This is simply a way to get these fine, focused student-athletes a venue to display their talents. It's a well-deserved and befitting reward to those teams that yield magnificent seasons. :barf:
It's a furtherance of the sham that it college football's postseason and it chafes my Hanes to see it perpetuated.
Other than being subjected to the continued bile of the involved politics, no, it's not 'hurting' anyone. However, that does nothing to settle my stomach. Just add another 20 or so bowl games and be done with it. 3-8? Hey, come play in the QWERTY/Home Base Keys Bowl.

Yet there is a simple, symbolic and time efficient way for Obama to make a statement against the exclusion and confusion of the Bowl Championship Series. When it comes time to invite the winner of Thursday’s BCS championship game – either Alabama or Texas – for the traditional trip to the White House, he can ask for the 14-0 Boise State Broncos to come also.

This game is exactly why we need a playoff. We needed a playoff before this so called "1" vs "2" matchup, but this game is a mess. We wait an entire month with these kids not playing, and they get out of game rhythm and shape to an extent. This makes things like McCoy getting hurt more likely to happen! Plus, all those early horrible mistakes both teams were making.
This is the worst year for the BCS ever. The system needs changed. End of story.

StorminNorman

Message Boarders typically flock to proven names.
I ask you, if you were Tuberville would you chose USF, knowing that: you would be the most decorated coach in your conference, in the most talented state (for recruits) n the conference, meaning that you have no reason not to be confident in believing you would be a perennial BCS Bowl team.
Or
Texas Tech where you would be competing against Bob Stoops, Mack Brown and Bo Pelini in a second tier program in-conference team?

I could see names such as Chris Peterson, Kirk Ferentz, Gary Patterson, Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian come up at USC. Also like for the usual suspects: Tommy Tuberville (if he does not get the Texas Tech job) and Phil Fulmer.
StorminNorman

As for possible replacements for Pete Carroll? I expect the names of Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian to be brought up as well as the usual suspects: Terry Bowden, Tommy Tuberville, Phil Fulmer
If I was USC, Chris Peterson would be MY number one choice. I don't think it will happen, mainly because I think Peterson likes being in Boise. He could have made a lot more money somewhere else if he wanted to, but he choose to sign a new five year contract just a few weeks ago. I think this is a man who is content with the money he is making and loves being where he is. Boise is a passion to him, not a launching pad.
Looking at the Pete Carroll coaching tree, Kiffin and Sarkisian are the two obvious names. If I was USC, Sarkisian would be my 1b to Peterson's 1a. You would have the perfect heir apparent to Carroll who now had a good (not great) year at Washington.
What's very interesting is that Jake Locker has announced he would not leave for the NFL this year. A big part of that was Steve Sarkisian. If Carroll does leave for Seattle, it will take some time (they have to interview a minority coach). Then, once Carroll is gone, the USC head coaching search will take sometime. If Sarkisian decides to leave Washington for USC after January 15th, Jake Locker will not be able to enter the NFL draft.
I don't think Kiffin will leave Tennessee, but it's certainly possible. I am not sure USC would want Kiffin though. Unlike Tennessee (who spent the decade as the third wheel in the SEC East with lagging recruiting) they don't need the circus Kiffin has (masterfully) orchestrated in Knoxville.
The Dark Horse from the Pete Carroll coaching tree is Nick Holt. He was LB's coach for Carroll 01-03, he went on to be Head Coach for Idaho (5-18 in two years), decided to leave Idaho after being offered a position with the St. Louis Rams as DL Coach but before signing a contract, the Rams were outbid by Pete Carroll. He was USC's defensive coordinator before last year when Sarkisian gave him a raise to fill the same role at Washington. I don't think Holt is a big enough profile to fill Carroll's shoes - but if USC wants to maintain consistency after Carroll, he could be an option.
Outside of the Carroll coaching tree, Tuberville is good enough to coach USC - but I don't know if he has the personality to mesh well with the culture over there.
I don't think Fulmer is a good fit there either (I would kinda be surprised if he coached anywhere after Tennessee) and Tommy Bowden isn't qualified to write a letter to USC about the job.
Kirk Ferentz would be a VERY interesting choice. He has routinely been a college coach mentioned for an NFL job, his Orange Bowl win certainly helps him. I think he would be a good fit.
John Fox is another coach I think could work for USC. He only has one year left in Carolina and his future is very shaky there.
Looking at other NFL coaches with questionable futures, Jack Del Rio is a former USC star. I am sure the Jaguars would LOVE a chance to get rid of Del Rio without having to pay him 15 million dollars. He is a quality coach in a bad situation who out performed his talent in 2009. If I was USC, he would be high on my list.

I really hate the fact that Carroll is leaving USC, but I guess the huge guaranteed money offered by Paul Allen is too good to pass up, not to mention that he'll get some front office control over there. Besides, it's the NFC West, so even though Seahawks probably won't win the division, they'll be somewhat competitive. Even if this doesn't work out, Carroll will have enough to retire after 60, or go back to NCAA where many colleges will be vying for his service. It's a win-win for Carroll, although USC obviously loses out. In addition to Carroll, they will need to fill several coordinators' jobs since some of them will leave with Carroll to Seattle, and now the freshman recruits may or may not all sign with USC.

Del Rio has apparently passes on USC, indicating USC may be in massive trouble from the NCAA's report.

That and he'd apparently be walking away from $15million if he left Jacksonville. I think I'd stay too.
I was having lunch today in a restaurant owed by a somewhat prominent Alabama alum (and retired Dolphin d-lineman) and overhead snippets of one side of a conversation one of the local sports radio hosts was having. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out which school they were talking about, but he was saying his sources are rumoring the next coach will have heavy Alabama ties. I'm thinking it was probably South Florida they were speaking of, and while he wouldn't say a name it wouldn't shock me if Mike Shula was interested in that position.

So yeah, ESPN is reporting that Lane Kiffin is headed to USC. He's taking Monte and Ed Orgeron with him as well.

He's giving Bobby Petrino a run for "most coaching jobs in a timespan."
Still waiting for a "Bobby Petrino to Tennessee" rumor to surface.

Sources say Orgeron telling UT enrollees not to go to class
http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2010/jan/13/sources-say-orgeron-telling-ut-enrollees-not-to/
Former Tennessee recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron has contacted multiple UT mid-term enrollees and encouraged them not to attend class today so that they can easily leave UT and enroll at Southern California, multiple sources told the News Sentinel.
Orgeron, who joined USC's staff when Lane Kiffin was hired as coach on Tuesday, did not immediately return a text message from the News Sentinel seeking comment.
By attending class today, the nine mid-term enrollees, who have been at UT since Monday, would have to follow strict transfer rules, which include sitting out a year.
It is unclear how many, or which, prospects Orgeron contacted.

I glanced at the TN message boards, they are in nuclear meltdown mode. Dan Wetzel's article (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news;_ylt=AmrlmHchNiY2B0GBCoxU9kE5nYcB?slug=dw-kiffinusc011210&prov=yhoo&type=lgns) lists his favorite topic titles...
5. Glad I only named my dog Kiffin.
4. Al Davis wasn’t as crazy as we all thought.
3. Pat Summitt is more of a man than Lane Kiffin.
2. It’s like getting a divorce from a stripper!
1. Layla can stay.

Yep, and burned mattresses, and spray painted profanities and such.
Reports are his players kept interrupting him during the meeting where he told them.
And it seems some folks were quite ticked off because he crapped all over UT's traditions.

From all I see I'd think the folks in TN would be glad to get rid of this clown.
My favorite quote from it all
But everything wasn't bad at Tennessee.
For instance, there was Lane's dad, Monte, the team's defensive coordinator.
"Monte was loved by everyone," says (Vols senior center Josh) McNeil. "He was a great guy, a great football coach, but a better guy."
McNeil pauses for a moment, thinks.
"He and Lane had absolutely nothing in common."
