Gonna have to disagree with you there about Rourke. You're right for sure, it did mirror Rourke's career and his life more then we like to think, but he became the Ram and put a level of intensity to that role that most actors only strive for.
Penn did a good job, as he always does, but that is it. I really have a hard time believing that someone can look at those two roles and subjectively say Penn was better.
I respect who Penn played and the message he was trying to convey, but if he wins, he'll win only because he played that.
Or someone really hates Mickey Rourke
You're absolutly right.

His daughter and Michelle Williams should be accepting.
I think the family had to accept because Williams wasn't a spouse and his daughter isn't old enough to sign for the Oscar... so pretty much the family is accepting for his daughter.

Um..if you haven't noticed, the whole Oscar show has been a huge religion standpoint...under belly sided of course, but it's there. Don't knock Maher, he's just making it stand out...but the ugly underbelly of religion has been lurking around the Oscars all night.

So far the only surprise has been Penelope Cruz. I'm glad she won and am glad Benjamin Button got some love in make-up. But Slumdog taking cinematography over Dark Knight (the first feature to use IMAX cameras) felt like bandwagon voting for the movie. Oh well. Nice to see Ledger nominated.
Hugh Jackman has been really good. I liked the duets he had with Hathaway and Beyoncé, as well as his dig at TDK fanboys. His final plug for Wolverine was also really funny. Nice to see him shutting the critics up.

The Dark Knight revolutionized Cinematography with its amazing use of IMAX Technology. If you don't believe TDK deserved the cinematography award...you shouldn't be on this forum. These incredibly massive and epic shots throughout the movie, leave me wondering WHY THE **** didn't Wally get what he so rightfully deserved. O YEAH! because its a comic book movie. f****** academy pricks.

The Wrestler in general is getting the big snub for sure. No noms for Best Director, Best Song, Best Pic. I mean what the ****. Seriously, it should've replaced The Reader in that slot in Best Pic.

Wow. I'm still a little surprised that Slumdog did this the whole season. I thought the season would be more unpredictable than this at first. It's an awesome movie, but there are a few things it has won that are pretty arguable. Wall-E should have at least three oscars right now instead of one.

Oh, ********. Slumdog is a good movie and it is well made, but it's nowhere near as good as people are drooling all over it. I can think of several movies off the top of my head that are more deserving then this. It's got nothing to do with it being universally loved. It's the fact that some of us just don't think it's that damn good.

For such a big year of gigantic blockbuster movies, it sure seems like popular films were given the cold shoulder. '08 is the most fun I have had at the movies in a very long time, and yet this is such a boring awards show.
Maybe I should have given a little more regard to MTV or Golden Globes

I agree....The Departed was overrated, plotwise, script-wise....although its the film that got Scorcese his due Oscar.
I think Slumdog was an entertaining "Disney-like" film....an escapist Hollywood, little cliche fantasy with an international flavor...and I thought it was exciting..nice music. Good film. I don't think its competition this year was much better than.
