Who's going to be available?

Cassel? Pats aren't going to allow him to go to the Jets.
Leftwitch? He's a back up quarterback and too prone to being injured.
Stafford? Jets are too high up on the draft and would have to give up quite a bit to score that.
Garcia? I think his QB rating was better than Favre did this year.

Maybe they can get Culpepper from Detroit on some kind of discount.

Hmmm... yeah, Cassel would be a good fit for the Jets but it won't happen because of the division rivalry with New England. Leftwich is a good QB, but I don't see them taking him... I think that they'll want a bigger name and even though Byron put up solid numbers this year, it was only in two games.

Rice only had 15 catches for 141 yards last season . What's "fantastic" about that?

By last season I meant to 2007; guess I am still in 2008 mode. As a rookie he lead the team in touchdowns. At 6'4 with good hands. He's fast with up's. He's a decent #2 behind Berrian on a team thats obviousy run 1st. And is he incredibly young, a 22 year old 2 year wide out.

I think Jeff Garcia is probably the best option. Give him a 1-year deal, and next year either try to get a QB from a very good QB draft class, or go for Cassel (who'd probably leave the Pats once Brady is healthy once again).

Favre was jealous of all the attention A-Rod was getting. He had to make some sort of an announcement on something. In July he will be sick of the attention being paid to MLB, the NBA Playoffs and the Stanley Cup Finals and will have his agent inform the Jets he wants to come back. Then the 24 hour watch will start all over again.

Either that or he will sign endorsement deals with every major company in America ensuring he is always on one channel or another at every waking moment of the day.

My prediction: Favre will be out of retirement within 6 months and playing for Detroit. After leading the Lions to a 5-11 comeback season, he'll retire again. 6 months after that, he'll come out of retirement to QB for Cleveland, leading them to a 4-12 season, ending with his retirement. 6 months later, Favre will join the Arena Football League, which will be reinstated by that time. He will start his own team, The Green Bay Favres. He will lead the team to a 1-13 season, and will retire thereafter. 6 months later...

LAKELAND, FL- Football hero-turned-restaurateur Freddie Mitchell is under investigation after what law enforcement sources say was a package of marijuana was delivered Thursday to his Lakeland business.

Mitchell says the cops are looking at the wrong guy.

"This is a case of mistaken identity," Mitchell told The Ledger Monday.

Mitchell, 30, was briefly handcuffed Thursday but not arrested.

His lawyer, John Liguori, said Lakeland police botched the investigation when they prematurely took Mitchell into custody at his restaurant, Brothers Bar-B-Q, before confirming he was the intended recipient of the FedEx package.

Lakeland police won't confirm that the package contained marijuana, and Mitchell said he was told by the officers who detained him only that it was "dope.''

However, three law enforcement officials familiar with the case told The Ledger the package contained about seven pounds of marijuana.

"This was a case of celebrity hunting," Liguori said. "They got all excited, and they jumped the gun."

Mitchell, a former Kathleen High football standout, played for UCLA and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Lakeland police aren't commenting on the details of the case.

"We have an active investigation - no one has been charged at this point," said LPD spokesman Jack Gillen.

As for "celebrity hunting," Gillen said, that's not how the department does things.

"We treat everyone alike, we don't show favoritism to anyone," he said. "When this investigation runs its course, the facts will be made thoroughly known to the public."

The three law enforcement sources said a package, thought to have been sent from Texas via FedEx, was "hit on" at some point by a drug-sniffing dog and Lakeland police were notified.

The package was delivered to Mitchell's grandmother, who does not live with Mitchell.

Mitchell said his grandmother is 90 years old and "takes memory pills."

The grandmother, according to both Mitchell and the law enforcement sources, told the delivery driver the package wasn't hers and she suggested it was probably intended for Mitchell.

Liguori said Mitchell's grandmother was given a FedEx phone number for Mitchell to claim the package, and he called the number. Mitchell said the package was delivered to him at Brothers, where he frequently gets packages of restaurant supplies.

Mitchell said he didn't know what was in the package - and still doesn't other than the reference to "dope'' made by police officers.

The critical moment in the whole scenario came when Mitchell, inside the restaurant during what he said was a lunch rush, was told he had a FedEx package to sign for in the parking lot. He went outside and signed.

As soon as he did, Mitchell said, "police were everywhere."

"I asked what was inside the package and they said 'dope.'" Mitchell said.

Someone phoned Liguori for Mitchell. He wasn't arrested. Police would not say whose name was on the package. Liguori said he didn't know whose name was on it, but said he couldn't imagine that it was Freddie Mitchell's name.

"If Freddie's name were on it," Liguori said, "he'd be sitting in jail."

"First Down Freddie Mitchell" had a variety of nicknames when he played football, including FredEX. He was a star wide receiver for Kathleen High. At UCLA, he caught passes and dated starlets.

In Philadelphia, despite some good years, he lost his job for what he described on MySpace.com as "running my mouth."

Mitchell said he was reluctant to say anything bad about the LPD because the police "are doing a great job in the community."

The Jets will still own his rights and there was a provision with Green Bay that if the Jet traded Favre to Minnesota, the Jets would owe Green Bay their 1st round pick.

One of the best things about being a Dolfan is knowing that the Jets will at somepoint screw their entire franchise up. Be it really bad coaches, horrible draft picks, trading away some of their future for an aging QB with a bum throwing shoulder. I bet they didn't spend all that money last year on Faneca, Pace, etc. etc.

Bulger has become injury prone. Plus his stats aren't as good as they used to be. He's not the same QB he was 3-4 years ago. He's lost his touch. The Jets trading for him is a HUGE risk, IMO. I think they'll stick with Clemens or give Brett Ratliff a shot.

CARDS WON’T BUDGE ON BOLDIN?
Posted by Mike Florio on February 11, 2009, 8:47 a.m. EST
Though the Arizona Cardinals apparently are willing to give receiver Anquan Boldin a new contract that better reflects his value in light of the current market, we’re hearing scuttlebutt from folks familiar with the organization’s thinking that the team will not budge on Boldin’s renewed request to be traded.
The thinking is that, because the Cardinals hold his rights for two more seasons, they can keep him around for 2009 and then consider trading him in 2010, the final year of his contract.
Boldin has made it clear that he wants out. But, as a practical matter, he has no leverage.
As Terrell Owens learned nearly four years ago in Philly, being chronically disruptive might eventually work, but only after losing a significant chunk of bonus money and becoming a local villain. As Chad Johnson learned last year, failing to show up will require repayment of plenty of money that has already been received and/or spent.
In the current economy and with an uncapped year looming, NFL teams likely won’t be quick to give up their contractual rights, especially when those rights are extremely favorable to the team in question.
It’s a fairly simple situation. Boldin voluntarily signed a contract binding him to the Cardinals through 2010. He agreed to accept a salary of $2.75 million this year and $3 million next year. No language was included to adjust his pay to reflect the contracts subsequently given to players like Larry Fitzgerald.
We think there’s still a chance that the Cardinals will squat on Boldin for the next two seasons, slap him with the franchise tag in February 2011, and trade him thereafter.
Though Boldin might not like any of it, he can do nothing to force his way out of the situation.

I highly doubt the Eagles would get rid of McNabb. Especially with them getting to the NFC Championship game. As far as the Jets go in terms of QB, they could sign a vetran like Jeff Garcia to be Clemens/Ratliff's backup. I doubt he would want to serve as a backup, but if things don't go well with the other two, he's in a position to run the team. Another option is too take one in the draft. Yeah, I think Favre (despite Jets giving him a chance to be a starting QB) really wanted to play in Green Bay or Minnesota, and ultimately he doesn't feel like coming back to New York and play another year. So he decided to retire for real this time.

Falcons to trade the contract rights to Michael Vick.. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/falcons/stories/2009/02/13/atlanta_falcons_michael_vick.html?cxntlid=homepage _tab_newstab

The Falcons are seeking to trade the rights to imprisoned and suspended quarterback Michael Vick.

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said the team is preparing to trade Vick’s contractual rights in an interview that appeared on the team’s website on Friday.

“With regards to Michael Vick, we’ve decided to seek a trade of his contractual rights to another NFL club,” Dimitroff told the website. “We took a number of steps in the 2008 season, including using our first pick to draft a quarterback. We feel a trade is the best move for the Falcons, and it’s also in the best interest of Michael. This has been a really unique situation from a variety of standpoints and because we will actively be involved in a trade situation, I don’t envision our organization speaking any more about this subject publicly until it’s reached a resolution.”

Vick is currently in federal prison on felony charges related to dogfighting and is scheduled to be released in July.

Vick has a lucrative contract that runs to 2013 and calls for him to receive a base salary of $9 million and a bonus of $6.43 million in 2009. The remainder of the contract is worth $45.11 million, with another possible $3 million in Pro Bowl bonuses.

Vick is currently under indefinite suspension from the league. Dimitroff said he had not heard from the NFL about a timeline for Vick’s reinstatement once he is released from prison.

Rooney's 'Steeler Way' brings six Super Bowl titles to Pittsburgh
By Peter King | Special to NFL.com

Editor's note: The following story originally appeared in Sports Illustrated's commemorative book honoring the Super Bowl XLIII champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

I've covered the NFL for a quarter century now. One tends to get jaded after a while, doing the same thing, seeing the same people (or at least the same kinds of athletic, fabulously wealthy people) playing the same game. Then I got a chance to be around the Pittsburgh Steelers for five days as the Pro Football Writers of America pool reporter during the run-up to the team's sixth Super Bowl victory.

The players make fun of the owner. The players make fun of the coach. The coach makes fun of everyone. There is no grass-is-greener-elsewhere syndrome; they all know this is where the grass is greenest: At the confluence of the Three Rivers.

These people are focused on enjoying their lives. They are not looking for the next gig. In those five days I never once heard players talking about making more money somewhere else. No coaches were sidling up to writers hoping to get their names thrown into some higher-paying college or NFL ring.

These people are grateful for what they have. They are happy.

I'll tell you a story. At practice on the Thursday before the game it began pouring, and most of us on hand had no rain gear. There was a sliver of protection -- a narrow area underneath a broad light pole -- and I found myself getting as thin as I could when the rain was at its heaviest. It was the same idea that wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Nate Washington and running backs Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore had. We were snuggled up tight to the pole, and Holmes and Parker started talking about the jumping ability of tigers. Holmes thought a tiger could jump the eight-foot fence ringing the adjacent field where the Steelers were practicing. Parker thought a tiger couldn't jump that high. They argued and laughed about how silly an argument it was, and the other players joined in with their opinions. "A tiger is all-powerful!" Holmes yelled. "Got springs in its legs! Of course it can jump that little fence!"

Meanwhile, out on the field, Hines Ward was walking to the sideline and saw the 76-year-old owner and patriarch of the team, Dan Rooney, his head protected from the rain by only a white towel that draped back over his neck. Keep in mind that Dan Rooney is one of the few remaining owners from the old guard of the NFL. A man such as this is to be respected.

"Hey, Mr. Rooney," Ward called out, looking mischievous. "You with the Taliban?"

Rooney smiled. I half expected him to give Ward a hotfoot when he wasn't looking, or an exploding cigar. Later in the week Rooney talked about the Steeler Way. Sometimes it's the Comedy Central Way. Everyone's an equal-opportunity target, all in the name of good fun and chemistry. "It's so marvelous," Rooney said. "It's the way we do things here."

At 6:30 on the morning after the Steelers' 27-23 Super Bowl victory over Arizona, Jerome Bettis walked into the lobby of his hotel in Tampa. He was just back from a night of celebrating with the guys. Who would know better about the Steeler Way than the Bus? So I asked him what he thought.

"It all goes back to Mr. Rooney," he said. "He sets the table so that everyone wants to come to work and do their best. He's the boss, but it's not like he's a boss. You want to play for him. I saw [Cardinals defensive tackle] Darnell Dockett tonight, and he was like, 'What is it about the Steelers? What do you have that's different from everywhere else?' And it's Mr. Rooney and the atmosphere he creates."

That atmosphere, dating back 40 years -- to when Rooney hired Chuck Noll and everyone in the organization finally got on the same page, where they remain today -- is at the center of Pittsburgh's winning six Super Bowls in the last 35 seasons. (No other team has won more than five.) Imagine players dying to stay in a slumping Rust Belt city with a smaller population than Aurora, Colo. Good players, like Hines Ward. "I never want to play anywhere else," said Ward, knocking on the door of Hall of Fame contention. "I will play in Pittsburgh my whole career, God willing."

You know what wins in football? Team first. Against the Cardinals, Ward showed how. Ward went to Holmes the day of the game and told him, in essence: It might not be my day because of how my knee's feeling today, and players become stars by excelling on days like Super Sunday. Ward knew the guy he'd taken under his wing was ready to fly. Holmes, when the game got very big in the final three minutes, went to Ben Roethlisberger and told him, in essence: I'm your guy, and I want to make the big plays today, and you can trust me. And Roethlisberger, being chased all over the place, believed Holmes and got him the ball four times on the biggest drive of their lives. Ward gave it up to Holmes. Holmes let Roethlisberger know he was ready for the hot lights. Holmes proved it, catching the most acrobatic winning touchdown in crunch time in Super Bowl history. Afterward I caught Ward unashamedly, unabashedly crying.

"I can't help it," he told me, walking through the tunnel from the field after the game. Tears streaked his eye black, and his mouth was curled in a tortured frown. "I am just so happy right now." "You look like you're just leaving a funeral," I said.

"No," he said. "All the work I put in -- we put in -- paid off. I am so proud of Santonio. So proud. It's a great thing about this team. It's such a team."

After games, win or lose, Rooney walks from locker to locker, thanking players for their contributions. One former Steeler, Sean Morey, a special-teamer, now plays for Arizona and told me the week before the game: "I remember playing for that. That gesture by Mr. Rooney meant more than anything." After the win over Arizona in the Super Bowl, Rooney got to defensive end Aaron Smith's locker. Rooney stuck out his hand. Smith didn't shake it. He hugged Rooney instead. "I'm happy you got your sixth, sir," Smith said. "I'm just happy I could be a part of giving you something you deserve so much. We're lucky to have you for an owner."

Steeler Nation is lucky too.

Jacobs’ franchise tag a rarity for Giants
When the New York Giants slapped their franchise tag on running back Brandon Jacobs Friday, it was a rarity for the team.
Only two times in franchise history has the team used its franchise tag. The first was offensive tackle Jumbo Elliott in 1993, and the second was Jacobs on Friday. The franchise tag means Jacobs will earn $6.621 million next season.
It speaks to Jacobs’ ability and the Giants’ meticulousness that this is only the second time the team has used its franchise tag.
Now the Giants’ free-agent focus shifts to their other free-agent running back, Derrick Ward, who will be free to sign with another team on Feb. 27.

If your a Restricted FA, I believe The Giants would only have the right to match. A team probably could offer him a pretty high contract that The Giants might not match. With Franchising, The Giants would now have the chance to match, and if not receive Two 1st round picks if he signs elsewhere.

Goodell has no business suspending Mike Vick when he returns to the league - he has been out of the league two years and he has served his punishment in jail.

Vick was mobile, and little else.

Not entirely true, the guy did win games. Atlanta's franchise was successful under Vick. If I am an NFL owner, I grab Vick.

wiegeabo
02-17-2009, 12:49 PM
Agreed. Vick was a threat with Atlanta. Even if he wasn't the most accurate or best quarterback, he had an arm on him. Plus, his speed made him hard to sack. And if they covered his receivers, he had the legs to effectively run the ball , keeping the defense honest and off-balance.

Now, if two years in prison didn't totally screw up his game, and he's allowed to play, he could be a good pickup for a rebuilding team to build around.

I love Hanson and I'm glad he'll be with us until the end. Although part of me feels for him that he had to spend his whole career as a Lion. He's a class act all around and deserves better.

The Eagles are reportedly concentrating on extending Donovan McNabb's contract and seem confident that a deal can be worked out.
McNabb wants added security to ensure that there will be no quarterback controversy in the near future, and the Eagles don't have much of a choice but to cater to him. They're obviously not ready to turn the team over to Kevin Kolb.

Personally, Center, ILB, NT and Cb is what i'm looking for. We need a #1 WR, but with the way Henning wants to run the offense (power running game w/two tight end sets) Ginn, Camarillo, and Bess are sufficient enough until Henne takes over at QB from Pennington.

No way. You're not going to be a top tier team in the NFL with Greg freakin' Camarillo or Devon Bess as your #1 WR. As nice a season as they both had, they're nothing more than complimentary 2 & 3. Miami struggled in games because they had no one that was open, no one to get the ball to. Fasano & Martin at TE are good, but again, you need more than a couple of good TE's & decent WR's to win games. You can't wait until Henne takes over to upgrade. That's something that needs to be done, like, now.

On the eve of the deadline to place the franchise tag on Peppers, a person close to the player said Wednesday that the impending free agent wants to play for the Dallas Cowboys or three other unnamed teams, two of them in the NFC.

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Vikings are on the verge of acquiring Sage Rosenfels from the Texans in exchange for a fourth-round pick.

This trade was nearly made last year, but Houston balked when the Vikes offered only a third-round choice. The Texans wanted a second-rounder. Rosenfels, 31 in March, would immediately become the favorite to start in Minnesota if the deal is completed. The aggressive passer is considered a strong fit for the West Coast offense coach Brad Childress runs. Feb. 23 - 1:22 pm et

He had a few good years, but he wasn't great. He did a fine enough job right up until they brought in AJ Feeley, whos only highlight in a Dolphin uniform was his painful reaction to a slap on the ass.

McNabb finally does what he shoulda have done a long time ago.

Donovan McNabb has grown tired of the Eagles' shenanigans (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Donovan-McNabb-has-grown-tired-of-the-Eagles-sh?urn=nfl,143565)
For the longest time, the story has been that the Philadelphia Eagles (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/phi/) might not want Donovan McNabb (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4650/) anymore. But guess what, Eagles? Donovan McNabb might not want you anymore.

That's the word from ESPN's Michael Smith (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3929063), who reports that McNabb and the Eagles had a long sit-down last week. McNabb, according to Smith, has indicated that he might not be willing to talk contract extension until he sees what Philadelphia does to upgrade their receiving corps and offensive line. Here's a snippet:
Although McNabb wants to remain in Philadelphia, if the Eagles aren't successful in significantly upgrading an offense that needs help at wide receiver, running back and offensive tackle (veterans Jon Runyan (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/3666/) and Tra Thomas (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4276/) are free agents beginning Friday), not only may McNabb drop his request for a new contract, he may consider going as far as to ask the Eagles to trade him.
How do you like those apples, Eagles organization? You can show Donovan McNabb some love by signing a receiver a little better than Hank Baskett (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8010/), or you can go into next season with your precious little Kevin Kolb (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8290/) under center. Donovan McNabb won't be pushed around anymore!

And it's hard to blame him. It seems like the guy to has to defend his own presence every year, even when the organization's given him a grand total of one good receiver in nine years, and zero good receivers who weren't team-dividing distractions. So if he wants to make the Eagles sweat a little bit now that he's got the chance, I'm all for it.

As for any potential free agent receivers that the Eagles may talk to, there really aren't many out there. There's T.J. Houshmandzadeh (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5652/), and then a big drop-off to a group of guys who aren't any better than what the Eagles have now. Unless they're willing to go the trade route, it's Houshmandzadeh or nothing. And he just got some handy new negotiating leverage.

Good for McNabb and good for Phily. Its about time he did this. This is as close to sticking it to the retarded fans who boo him that he will ever get. If they dislike him so much, lets see how good they are without him. Everybody knows McNabb will get the last laugh either way (Kolb will be terrible; McNabb with a good wo would be mvp esque) so he mide as well get it in Phily.

Love the guy, but he's been a mouthpiece for this organization for years.

With that said, with the $42 Million that is reported we have under the cap. They should be able to get him weapons...They can't screw up this offseason.

That's right - especially since TJ's putting himself out there by saying he used the game against Philly as an audition, wouldn't mind playing with McNabb, so on & so forth. Philly can't drop the ball this offseason as you said.

A few years too late McNabb.

Not really, they do listen to him. Last year he whined and they responded by adding Asante and offering Moss 4 years at 10 million a year, by far his best offer. With Randy Moss Phily prob. wins the 13-14 regular season games and McNabb is probably MVP with over 4000 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Obviously Moss took the smaller deal to stay a Pat which is ebyind Reids control and probably why you didn't hear McNabb whining about not adding anybody last off season (outside of DeSean), but the point is they played ball and went after the wr. Now you have the premiere free agent wide out saying he wants to be an Eagle, and he just happens to be literally a perfect fit on the field and in the locker for the Eagles. McNabb, who is the Eagles offense, putting public pressure on them to go after the guy is in the best interest of everybody involved with Philadelphia football.

If they can sign Housh, draft an offensive tackle and either Wells or McCoy in the 1st round, the Philadelphia Eagles with McNabb at the hlm will be a show to watch next year on offense.

Theres no drop off in McNabb passing ability; that is the same as it was when he was 25. He cant make as many plays with his feet, but if with Housh and amore devleoped DeSean Jackson as his wr, McNabb will have no trouble topping 30-35 touchdown passes next season.
