View Full Version : Post Your Favourite Thor Pictures

Here's a thread inspired by the "Post Your Favourite Green Lantern Pictures" thread over on the DC boards. Like with that thread, I'd imagine this could be moved over to the Thor boards when they go up, should it prove popular enough to justify it.
I'll start the ball rolling with arguably my favourite Thor picture, drawn by Marko Djurdjevic:

That was one beautiful cover Coipiel drew for Thor #10. And I loved that Thor/Iron Man battle (if you can call that mauling a battle), with the above image just perfectly encapsulating how screwed Iron Man is at that moment.

Gotta kick it old-school for all you Thor newbs:
Awesome transformation sketch by John Romita, Jr. and inked by Tim Townsend:

One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite arcs by Walt Simonson:

Thor, one of the only beings to ever exert his will over the Destroyer armor rather than being consumed by mindless rage while using it:

Cover says it all: "Alone against the Celestials!"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/thecorpulent1/Thor/thor-388.jpg
Great cover featuring most of the major Asgardians by Steve Epting, from the last arc of Thor's previous series:

Thor with his faithful goats, Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder:

Pretty sweet classic Thor pic by Mike Deodato (and I usually don't even like Deodato's work):

I'm sure I have the issue with this scene in it, I recognise the art. I did buy the first few issues of the original "Heroes Return" Thor reboot, though at the time I was too young to really appreciate it, I think.

Those first few issues were great. I especially liked the team-up with Namor. It lost its way a bit after the big fight with Thanos in #25, but it got back on course in the 40s after Odin died and Thor ascended to the throne.
Anyway, Thor totally fights his friends a lot and, for some reason, artists love to capture it in really tight close-ups:

This one's not a close-up, but it's still a great pic by the incomparable John Buscema:

Thor's had a variety of costumes over the years. There's the classic Kirby costume, of course, which we have plenty of pics of already, and then...
the Simonson armor:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/thecorpulent1/Thor/thor-382.jpg
the Godpack costume:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/thecorpulent1/Thor/thorcostume-3.jpg
Deodato's ugly bare-chested costume:

Deodato's uglier S&M costume:

the King Thor armor, drawn by Alan Davis here:

the updated Simonson armor by Andrea DiVito:

and, finally, the new costume, drawn by the late, great Mike Wieringo here:

Beta Ray Bill's first issue:

... and an homage-tastic cover with Bloodaxe during the Masterson period:

Thor and Bill hanging out:

In honor of the upcoming Pet Avengers... THE ORIGINAL FROG OF THUNDER!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/thecorpulent1/Thor/frogsofcentralpark4.jpg
And a personal favorite of mine and most other Simonson-era Thor fans, the last stand of Skurge, the Executioner:

Looking at that costume gallery, I have to say that out of them all, its Thor's current costume that's my favourite.
And I really need to read that issue with Skurge's last stand. It's in the God-Size Special, but I never got round to really looking at it.

If you're planning to read earlier Thor stuff now that you're becoming a fan of the character, hold off and read it with the rest of the arc in the Simonson trades. It's a great story and Skurge's sacrifice means all the more knowing his motivations and getting a feel for who he was before.

One of my favorite parts of Jurgens' King Thor Saga in Thor's second series. Spider-Man is in awe of Thor after Thor teleports a nuclear explosion--not the nukes themselves, mind you, the actual nuclear explosion after they've detonated--away, keeping Asgard and, by extension, New York City, which it was floating over at the time, safe.

Yes. The Buscema brothers in particular have done some great work with Thor. I prefer John's, but Sal's time wasn't half-bad. He's part of why Eric Masterson wasn't a total waste as Thor's fill-in.

I don't know, that must be Deodato's thing because he did the same thing with Ares. He's admitted character design is one of his weaknesses. That Thor pic looks so badass though that it doesn't even matter. It's just so good.

He's been my favorite comic artist since I was a little kid reading PAD's Hulk with Deodato on pencils. Take it from a Hulk fan, he does one of the top 3 Hulks of all time, easily. Keown, Gary Frank, and Deodato are the best Hulk artists ever, and his art was 100% better during Bruce Jones' run on the Hulk.
And his work on T-Bolts and now on Dark Avengers is just the best he's ever been.
Speaking of Gary Frank, Hulk, and Thor...

Yeah, but it's by the same guys who've brought us the last few DTV movies, so I'm not particularly enthused. I mean, it's great exposure for Thor and I'm glad it's getting made, I just don't think I'll wind up enjoying it too much.

Thor Son of Asgard was awesome. I heard that due to its popularity they were going to continue it. LIARS!
Son of Asgard > Smallville.
I heard that and ignored that Son of Asgard was a take off of Smallville becasue TALES OF ASGARD was around YEARS before Smallville and Tales of Asgard was alot like Son of Asgard which you'll find out in a couple months with the reprints if you are familar with it.
Marvel really needs to start a Tales of Asgard series FROM the mini coming out.

I get the feeling that the Tales of Asgard reprints are Marvel's way of feeling out whether there's a real market for a new Tales series after the success of the Ages of Thunder one-shots. I hope I'm right about that and that whoever winds up on a new ToA series takes some inspiration from the Son of Asgard series.

Tales of Asgard is not the same thing as Son of Asgard.
They're very similar. Tales of Asgard features tales of various characters from throughout Asgard's history, including Thor and the rest of the current series' main characters in their younger years. Son of Asgard just stripped away the other stuff and focused solely on them. So it's like a more focused subset of Tales of Asgard.

Want to a funny story that will bring a tear to your eye?
Of course you do. You're still reading this. So I get a call from an Art Director friend of mine on Saturday as I was preparing to get my place ready for the Fedor/Arlovski fight. He asked me if I could submit a last minute design for the Thor movie that Marvel is doing.
Over course I was thrilled. They needed it Monday morning. Fine, whatever! They could of needed it in a few hours and I would of complied. It's Thor! Hell, I did design work for [link] Superhero, the Movie - I was waiting for a REAL superhero movie to come along!
Anyway, I factored in a few things. Like creating a suit that could successfully pad an actor and give him some heroic bulk, etc. I also knew that the colors had to be a bit more subdued than the Kirby comic book. And sadly, I had to come up with something that wouldn't look ridiculous on. A tall order.
So, I did what I could and enjoyed every minute of it. I managed about 65% of what I envisioned. Generally that's a decent success when it comes to applying your vision to paper.
I even incorporated the marks on Thor's plates into his logo...
Here's the sad part. I turned it in and that's when the AD mentioned it was a design for the ANIMATED movie. I just assumed it was for the Live Action film I've heard buzz about... Clearly I need to learn to ask more questions...! Assumption is the mother of all... what's the word I'm looking for?
Hell, at least I got to design a Thor costume, right?

They should time warp him into the present 616 asap.
TheCorpulent1
02-26-2009, 09:22 PM
He's the god of strength, but that's not the belt of strength. He is stronger than classic Thor, though. He was almost as strong as Thor in that period, when Thor had gotten much stronger thanks to actually learning more about how to use the Odinpower.
I'd like to see him again, but I wouldn't really want him to hang around the 616 universe indefinitely. He's too much like Thor. His whole purpose as a character was to act as a foil to show just how far Thor had fallen in this grim future.
Vanguard07
02-26-2009, 09:26 PM
I'm sure they could easilly find a worthwhile place for him in the 616 though. Make him young, brash and inexperienced and have him apprentice with Herc for a while.
Vartha

TheCorpulent1
02-27-2009, 09:34 AM
I certainly wouldn't be averse to it. Maybe Magni will come back to resolve this whole throne dispute. As the son of Thor, he has more claim to the throne than Balder, since Thor was the appointed heir to Odin and the line would only go through Balder if Thor were incapacitated and he had no heirs of his own.
Anyway, here's a cool scene featuring Tarene from back in her pre-Designate days, when she was just a scared young woman confronted by a giant, purple psycho:

I liked how Thor didn't give a s*** about whatever authority Iron Man thought he had and Iron Man essentially 'compromised' by completely acquiescing to Thor while trying to save face with some diplomatic babble. Basically, the conversation broke down to:
Thor: Leave me and my people alone or I will f*** your s*** up even worse than I've just done.
Iron Man: Yes, sir. But can I call Asgard a sovereign territory to save face a little bit in front of all the other mortals?

He was probably thinking that he and Thor were friends and Thor would understand that Tony did what he thought was right. Or maybe, since he didn't know about Don Blake's new status, he thought that Thor had just returned and maybe he could explain things before Thor found out about Clor.
Either way, he was wrong and it was lovely to watch. :)

I love that issue. Do you remember the one ish about 4-5 years ago where they squared off against each other and Thor nearly killed him? Cap was smart enough to get out of the way I recall.
That was probably around the time when I started to dislike Stark considerably.
Yep, "Standoff." One of the best parts of the King Thor saga. So good, in fact, that I made a wallpaper out of its covers (which is sadly too small for my current desktop):

Yeah, Loki's basically the Zeus of the Asgardians as far as spreading his seed goes. There was an arc in Amazing Spider-Man during JMS' run that revealed he's got a few demigod kids running around on Earth, too.

The Question

Really?!
Yup. In the case of Slepnir, there was a wild (and mystical) stallion running around Asgard and ****ing **** up. Everyone, from Thor to Balder to Odin himself, tried to tame the beast, and they all failed. Then Loki stepped in to save the day, and was able to calm the Stallion down long enough to be captured by turning into a female horse and ****ing it. Of course, Loki got preggers and produced Slepnir, the magical eight legged horse that Odin rides. Ew.

The version I knew was the one Ages of Thunder was based on.
Loki changed into the mare to lure the Frost Giant's horse away as in the comic so the giant couldn't finish the wall. Well in the myth, Loki ended up getting chased by the stallion and a few months later returned with Slepnir in tow and he handed Slepnir over to Odin.

Nope THAT Ramore, is the Regining arcs.
Odin Removes Thor's Humanity, Jake Olsen, and shortly after Odin dies killing Surtur, Thor becomes Lord of Asgard, moves Asgard ABOVE New York City, then we attack Asgard it falls on NYC killing thousands.
Hundreds of years later after Thor tries to improove life on Earth, the last superheroes try to stop Thor from doing what he's doing because he lacks the Humanity to UNDERSTAND the human way of thinking. Wolverine Slices into Thor's arm, Thor looses the arm as Magni is yet a baby.
Magni Grows up, Basically reasoning with Thor and Thor sets things straight by going back into the past and fixing one certain event, which in turn erases, that furture he just came from.

It's an alternate future timeline that split off from the main Marvel universe's timeline. In both, Thor brings Asgard (the city) to float over Manhattan, much the same way the new Asgard is floating over that empty field in Oklahoma now. Only, you know, it's Manhattan, so people care a bit more in that case. Thor's humanity gets separated from him in the form of Jake Olsen, who gets killed when a cabal of corporate leaders destroy Asgard and, as a result, Manhattan. Thor, unencumbered by his humanity, kills the cabal and rebuilds New York in his own image as New Asgard, installs Loki as his chief of security, and marries the Enchantress. Over the years, he kills most of the other superheroes still around, losing an arm and an eye to Wolverine's claws in the process, Balder betrays him and is killed by Loki, and then he refashions pretty much all of North America (possibly the world, but I can't remember exactly how far his kingdom expanded) into a utopia.
But, like most utopias, it turns out to have a dark side--humans are treated as second-class citizens under Loki's security forces. Ultimately, this alien god-killer guy called Desak comes to Earth, merges with the Destroyer, and kills most of the remaining gods in Asgard. Thor, after being confronted by his son Magni, who's as noble as Thor used to be and hates what his father's become, is shown the error of his ways. He destroys the Destroyer/Desak and uses the Odinforce, along with some help from the future version of Tarene, to go back in time to before Jake Olsen is killed and re-merge him and the younger Thor. He also imparts his memories of his timeline into his younger, complete self so that he'll never make those same mistakes again. Thor, now armed with the knowledge of where his actions could lead, sends Asgard back to its own dimension before the cabal's raid brings it crashing down on Manhattan and the normal Marvel timeline is restored.
But we know from Kang, Exiles, Captain Britain, and various other time-traveling/dimension-hopping characters and stories that every Marvel timeline still exists somewhere out in the Omniverse, so it's still very possible that the Reigning's version of Magni could come back some day. :)

The Question

That's the mythological version, by the way. Loki wasn't involved in the birth of the Marvel version of Sleipnir. ;)
Poo. Loki got toned down in the comics from the original version a lot, both in terms of cutting out a lot of the ****ed up yet insanely awesome **** from the myths like his being a baby-mama, but also a very long trend of just making him a one dimensionally evil villain that's only been rectified in the past eight years or so. There's a whole tradition in Norse mythology that depicts Loki actually being much more effective when it comes to helping humans than even Thor (as well as just as sincere), as he would actually solve difficult problems by thinking his way through them, instead of smashing things and assuming the day has been saved. He just also went very dark and killed Balder for revenge after Odin banished his children, and then went crazy and destroyed the world after Odin killed his two other children and bound him to a rock with his son's intestines with snake venom dripping into his eyes as punishment.

TheCorpulent1
02-27-2009, 06:22 PM
Yeah, although in that case Olsen literally was Thor's humanity made human. The real Jake Olsen's spirit had moved on to Heaven in an earlier comic--an annual, I think. Seems like a similar deal with Blake now having his own personality even though he was never technically a person.
I need to read more Thor. He's a character that I love and I've pretty much immensely enjoyed every single one of his stories that I've read but just glancing through this thread I feel so intimidated.
It's like any character with a super-long history, really. Just pick an era and give it a try. The Simonson trades are always a great place to start, or you could go for the Jurgens run if you want something a bit more modern. The King Thor stuff is thankfully all in trades, from the Death of Odin right through the Reigning, but the earlier Jurgens stuff is sort of chopped up in smaller trades or not collected at all.

As Skrull Hank said about Clor/Ragnarok after Clor killed Foster, it lacked the Human "anchor" so they had to adjust Clor because of that.
Odin PLANNED to get Thor the way he is. With EACH Ragnarok Odin "improoved" Thor.

I love that Coipel's integrated fur into so many of the Asgardians' designs. It's such an obvious thing to put on them, yet so few costumes over the years have had it.
Speaking of costumes, let's look at some more. I posted most of Thor's important ones already. Here are some of his usually-purple-clad best friend, god of light, and second-best warrior in all of Asgard (or maybe third or fourth; it's never clear between him, Brunnhilde, and Sif), Balder:
As a boy in Son of Asgard (again):

Simonson's take:

Another take from an era of the comics I haven't read yet myself, so this one looks weird to me:

Coipel's redesign, which I absolutely love:

And, just for kicks, Loki killing Balder's punk ass in the dystopian future of The Reigning:

One of my all time fave Fan art pieces. It was posted on the Thor boards about a year ago and I still don't know who drew it.

The Thor/Iron Man tensions continue. And long may they continue...

And this is one of those great "A picture's worth a thousand words" moments, neatly summing up Thor's entire view on post-Civil War Tony Stark:

This is one of my son's favorite Thor issues. Anytime Stark gets bit##ed he's happy, he hates comic book Stark but loves Thor.

That's the beauty of having kids. You can teach em to love what you love. Hate what you hate. Until they get to the teenage years...then he's likely to go Hulk fanboy just to spite you. :(

Isn't Sega making the Thor game?
After what they did to Iron Man and Hulk, I wouldn't get to excited about that...

It doesn't really matter. The exception of a few, all Superhero based video games suck.
