This was such a great issue. The Vision was once my favorite Avenger...he's been screwed up a lot over the past few years, but at least we still have great storylines, such as this one; "Even An Android Can Cry", when the team accepts him and offers him membership.

Sidenote; i love the tension between Cap and Iron Man on the final page. This theme was actually explored for several issues during this era, culminating when the two heroes actually come to blows. An unfortunate preview of sorts to Civil War, many years later...

Hitch is my fav avengers artist of all time as well. My second fav, (VERY close second) is McNiven. His work at the beginning of New Avengers was outstanding.

Loved his art for the Wrecker vs some of the NA. Great stuff.

I remember when this one first came out, & around that same time frame he produced a JLA piece that was such a stark contrast. Here we see the Avengers are cast in such a dark depiction, with Spider-Man-a widely mistrusted, somewhat creepy hero-in the forefront. They all look like they're in attack mode & it looks a little scary. But the JLA

are seen nice & bright, rallying around the beloved Superman, looking nice & noble as if to suggest that now that they're here, everything's gonna be alright. It got me to thinking; the way he sees them is probably how the public would see them. The name "Avengers" sounds a little ominous; like they're out to hurt or punish. Then you look at their roster. They've got former criminals, former spies, monsters, mutants, the aforementioned Spidey, a foreign dignitary who only joined up so he could spy on them. It's funny how Marvel takes all the conventions of superheroes & continually flips them.

Buscema would be my pic - although come to think of it, he's also my favourite Namor and Thor artist too. Perez gets a nod (obviously) and Byrne gets a mention too (but for his West Coast work).

EDIT: Ooops - forgot about Neal Adams and Rich Buckler. Oh, and Bob Hall's Avengers work in 'Emperor Doom' made a lasting impression on me, even though it was a one-shot.

Not a real fan of Mad - always struck me as a 'style over substance' type artist, more concerned with producing a dynamic splash page than a decent storytelling narrative. There's no doubt he can embue his work with an amazing sense of energy and it can look pretty cool but really that's all there is to it for me.
