Taken 2: Taken Again?
Fox said to be developing sequel to sleeper hit.
by Jim Vejvoda
March 11, 2009 - Given that Taken has so far raked in $192 million worldwide ($119 mil of that from the U.S. alone) and is still in the top five releases at the domestic box office in its sixth week of release, it really shouldn't come as a surprise that 20th Century Fox would like to be taken again.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the studio is already developing a sequel to Taken, with the original film's screenwriter, Robert Mark Kamen, set to script the follow-up.
The paper adds that veteran scribe Kamen is also scripting an Americanized remake of the Luc Besson-produced French thriller District B13.
No word yet if star Liam Neeson or director Pierre Morel, who also helmed District B13, will be re-Taken or if Fox will move in a new direction with the sequel.
The only way i can see a Taken follow up work is if it's a prequel.
btw This time around Fox is the one developing the movie , so you have to wonder just how hard or soft PG-13 they want the movie to be . The first movie was developed by Luc Besson and later Fox got the rights for the Us release. I think they are the ones who pushed for the Pg-13 cut ( what's new :whatever:) but the movie was a massive success.
I just hope they film the movie as an R rated flick and release it that way. Cause aside from the US , all other countries ( well the european market) got the R rated cut to see.

Not surprised these days since its rare for those bastards to have a hit these days, so any hit in their minds usually equate a successful sequel.

Taken is quite a phenomenen,
it is still in the top three after being out in the US for so long!!
and considering it was already released on DVD elsewhere, its quite mind boggling how this movie keeps raking in the dosh!!
I say bring on the sequel, but allow them the same freedoms they had when filming this one.
If FOX wants to butcher it to PG-13 for US Audiences, thats up to them,
but for the rest of us internationally, they should leave it uncut!!

Taken was not produced by Fox, its distributors. It was produced by Europa Corp. in a joint venture with M6 and Studio Canal, etc. The picture came out in Europe before America. Heaven help us if Fox thinks they can milk that idea so quickly.
I finally watched it this week and it's the best action flick I've seen in a long time. I enjoyed the action more than Dark Knight. I don't know why some people criticized the skills of Bryan Mills. He did get some help and he followed good clues. He wasn't Jason Bourne, he was veteran spy with a fiery determination. Why wasn't he easily caught by the corrupt French authorities? It's because they were corrupt as Mills realized. Why else wasn't action taken against the Albanian gang?
Was it surprising there was corruption in France and so much human trafficking? No. Unlike Hostel the problem is more much like that. Heck, last year three thousand women were estimated to have been trafficked throughout America into sex slavery. The corruption in France might be exaggerated but not impossible. Since Luc Besson helped co-write this I don't see why anybody should find it anti-French. In the famous Bourne saga the C.I.A. are murderous conspirators. That doesn't make it anti-American. And let's not forget the David Mamet film Spartan. Great dialogue, great cast. The daughter of U.S. government official is sold into sex slavery. The U.S. government covers it up. No red flags there, boys. It was still a kick ass film.
The Arabs were another stereotype that was exaggerated. But did anybody ask who the other bidders were? Greek? Italian? British? No, they just focus on the Arab who probably wasn't going to bid on the heroes daughter. I'll be glad when these stereotypes disappear. But for now, it was okay with me, and not as offensive as others have been. None of them even shouted "Allah Akbar" then BOOM!

I saw the "European" cut and it is an amazing movie. But I don't know if I would want a sequel or a prequel. To me, it's one of those movies that stands alone.

Yeah, I don't get either how Fox could be developing the sequel. They didn't make the movie, just distributed in some countries. Unless they've now bought the sequel rights from the original production companies? Weird stuff, man.
I don't know how I feel about the sequel anyway. Not everything needs a sequel. Commando never got a sequel (though Die Hard was first developed as a Commando 2). Cobra never got a sequel.
Maybe it would work as a prequel. Like matrix_ghost suggested.

If Fox is developing it, it's going to be compromised watered down crap. Maybe they will give Neeson Laser Eyes?
I'm so sick of how its trendy to hate Fox. Sure, they **** some movies up...but its not always entirely their fault. The creative team holds just as much blame. If they get Besson and Neeson back, I'm sure it could be good. A sequel could work, but not a direct sequel. I'd rather see Kim go off to college and Brian just get back in the spy game. Maybe get assigned to take down another slaver syndicate. The plot can be simplistic. It was Neeson's performance and the action that made this movie. Plus it was a breath of fresh air in the midst of non-stop over the top, big budget action movies (which usually involve people in superhero costumes as of late). I'd see a sequel.

It's not "trendy" to look at a track record. However, it apparently is "trendy" to defend Fox.
*Looks at what they did to the Deadpool character*
No matter how obviously they fall short, miss the point, and re-justify criticism of their decisions.

Because it wasn't an American movie. I think that is, and has always been, the main reason for foreign remakes in Hollywood.
I mean, Frank Oz's fantastic British film Death at a Funeral came out in 2007, and Hollywood is already remaking it. With all black cast. But yeah, I don't need to watch it. Just makes me angry.

I enjoyed Taken quite a bit, and while I'd certainly watch a sequel, I don't think it's needed.

It'll be like Death Wish where a sequel doesn't need to happen.
Taken is their most successful film since... when? Horton Hears A Who?

Death Wish 3 was by far the worst piece of trash I HAVE EVER SEEN. Hands down. But back on the topic, I'm totally 100% against the remake of District B13. There's no reason to remake it, it's fun, creative and eye candy. And works really well in the french background. I'm apalled at how hollywood just has to have their own version of a film or to "american-ize" it. A Taken sequel sounds very poor IMO, but if they open a great story again maybe it'd be fun. Probably not though....

I saw the R-rated cut and I loved the hell out of this movie. The only way I'd want a continuation of the story in any way is if Neeson is involved.
Movie like this doesn't need another film, but I loved the character so much I wouldn't mind.

How is it trendy to hate Fox? Their record speaks for themselves. As for the creative team statement? I do agree they hold quite a bit of the blame for not sticking to their guns and allowing their product to be watered down.
But at the same time, Fox holds the larger blame for alienating directors, writers, and producers with their iron fist ways and their desire to dumb the material down for the masses.

Did Taken really have a great story though? It was fairly basic. See my response to PWN3R for more elaboration though.

Exactly! That is what made the movie, Neeson and the character. The plot doesn't need to be elaborate or brilliant. It just has to be a run of the mill action movie. The action simply needs to be good and we need more of Neeson and the character he established. In my opinion the Brian character is what made the movie good. He was an amazingly fun character to watch. I'd watch basically any adventure they put him in as he is one of the more unique action heroes we've seen in recent years in Neeson is just brilliant as him.

But maybe you should blame the masses. Is Fox really wrong for dumbing down the plots? They are a business, after all. Their job is to make money. Perhaps the people who are seeing these movies are really who is to blame.

I think Taken was so sucessful because if it's premise and a sequel would have to be a worthy scenario to lure people back.
I don't want B-13 being "americanized" . I'm looking forward to the sequel later this year.

I'd see a sequel. The first kicked all kinds of ass, even if the second is little ore than more of the same, i would still be enough for me. This is the kind of movie where all i wanted was to have fun, and i did so if they can carry that over into a second, bring it on.

There's a very cheeky gin on my face right now.
I'd be all up for a sequel as long as it's made by Luc Besson's team and only distributed via Fox. And the rest of the world gets the international cut again.

Why do a sequel to this?
What's going to happen? Is his daughter going to get kidnapped AGAIN?

Undoubtably, 'Fox' will cut off that line to: "I will find you, and will k-!", Rothman announces ban of all verbal/physical-threats in 'Fox' features.

I don't see the point in a sequel. The first was decent at best, and not particularly suited to a follow-up. If Neeson is gonna do another one, they better find themselves a much better script and lose the half-assed Bourne-cam.

Hmm. I think Taken 2 would be great if Jean Claude ended up being a rotten scum bag all along and also maybe this Lenore can be the next one to be taken. It can start off with her and her new man going on a trip but with him dying before she is taken, what do you guys think?? Ohh,and a great way to make it very personal is to also reveal that Jean Claud well screwed Bryan's daughter.

Meh. I don't get the hype over this film.
I saw it when it came out in the cinema here, months ago and it was alright (in parts), but that's it. Nothing special. Just your standard action stuff for the most part. I have not bought the DVD.
I don't really get why it's taken off like it has in the States.
