Marvel has released an adjusted release schedule for its upcoming slate of films, confirming a May 2011 release for Spider-Man 4, and changed dates for Thor, Captain America and The Avengers.
As the press release below reads, the new dates push Thor and The Avengers back a year each, allowing for more production time. The move of The Avengers also clears up the question of how it and Captain America could be in production at the same time while (presumably) starring the same actor as Captain America. It should be noted too, that moving The Avengers release to 2012 takes it out of direct opening weekend competition (http://www.newsarama.com/film/020925-Green-Lantern-film.html) with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Marvel's press release reads:
Paving the way for the production and release of its multi-character superhero film, THE AVENGERS, Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: MVL), announced today an adjusted release pipeline for its self-produced feature film properties that reflects the first time individual Super Hero characters and story arcs will be inter-woven and culminate in a multi-character motion picture. Separately, Marvel Studios confirmed today that Sony Pictures Entertainment will release SPIDER-MAN 4 on May 6, 2011. Additionally, Marvel Studios has revised the release dates for THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA as part of its release strategy for an uninterrupted road to THE AVENGERS, now debuting May 4, 2012.
A Marvel character-based film will now launch the summer box office season for three years in a row, from 2010 through 2012.
“This new schedule strongly sequences Marvel’s movie debut dates, big screen character introductions and momentum. It maximizes the visibility of our single character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character THE AVENGERS film in 2012,” said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios.
Sony Pictures’ and Marvel Studios’ SPIDER-MAN 4 is slated for May 6, 2011. To date, all three motion pictures in the phenomenally successful SPIDER-MAN franchise have generated nearly $2.5 billion worldwide theatrically.
Below is Marvel Studios’ 2010-2012 updated release schedule for its slate of self-produced and financed feature films:
Marvel Studios Feature Film Pipeline
Film/Character - Prior Release Date - Current Release Date
IRON MAN 2 - May 7, 2010 - May 7, 2010
THOR - July 16, 2010 - June 17, 2011
THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA - May 6, 2011 - July 22, 2011
THE AVENGERS - July 15, 2011 - May 4, 2012
The release date for IRON MAN 2 remains unchanged. IRON MAN 2 is the sequel to the blockbuster film, IRON MAN, which has grossed nearly $600 million worldwide.

That really isn't that far away. Especially when a production as big as this is rolling out. So, maybe a June or July start date in 2010?

didn't they start the clock tower/train sequence (SM2) a year in advance as it was so complex?

IIRC, filming is slated to begin sometime next year. This year will be all about the script and casting.

There was a rumor the next Batman movie won't be until 2012 due to Nolan's Inception movie.

Damn, start counting. Now we just need more announcements like casting and the villains and I can't freaking wait. We'll probably get something this year with that.
I hope to God Raimi and co can come back and blow all of us away with our expectations since the thrid film. I do think he'll want to make a much better experience. Plus he made a smaller film in between which is always good to do, so I think he's ready to come back.

IIRC, filming is slated to begin sometime next year. This year will be all about the script and casting.
The script's been in development since early 2008 (Vanderbilt was unable to work on it when he got the gig in late 2007 because of the WGA strike), plus add in David Lindsay-Abaire's rewrite/new draft when he came on in late 2008.
If Sony's going to film the fourth and fifth films back-to-back, they need to have someone writing the fifth movie this year so that they can build sets and begin previsualizations next year in addition to the fourth movie. Once Raimi finishes up Drag Me to Hell and fulfills the contractual promotion tours, he'll most likely be working full throttle on S-M 4/5 for Sony after that.
I'm surprised Sony hasn't pegged a 2012 release date for S-M 5 -- I guess they can aim for a late June release a la S-M 2.

SM5 June 2012 sounds about right. I think it will underperform big time though being overlooked by Avengers and possibly BB3. Not to mention that the latter film of a back to back pair usually flops or underperforms.
PS: Shouldn't we be moving some threads to the SM4 forum?

WOOHOO!!!
I cannot wait! This will be my daughter's first Spidey movie(in the theater, anyways)!
I'm also hoping for a Lizard/Kraven combo, and I'm REALLY hoping for a far more personal story, preferrably character-driven, much like part 2 (still the best comic movie ever made).
As for a Batman and Spider-Man showdown, the only person who wins in that instance is the fans! That sounds like a PHENOMENOL summer!!
Of course, I still think the third Batman movie will totally blow chunks in comparison to TDK, though...I am optimistic, for the time being.

@Chaseter. How is it being rushed?? They've been writing this since 2007.. they still have about 2 years to get it right. Raimi is not rushing...if they were rushing it would have come out in 2010.
webhead731
03-13-2009, 10:56 AM
2009 actually. 2 years is really rushing.
I thought the 3 year wait for Spider-Man 3 was worth it, so this better be uber worth it.

We got got news for this back in 08 when they confirmed James V and David Abaire for writing the script. Spidey 3 came out in 07...I'm sure they've been working on it since then..which equals plenty of time. They would have to have something because they're looking for villians.

It's two years away. They've been writing the script for the last year and a half; they've got Raimi, Maguire, and Simmons all back; apparently they've got villains; and filming is scheduled to begin in a year.
This is the complete opposite of rushing. They're definitely taking their time with it.

Don't forget Dunst said "I'm in" but she wouldn't confirm whether she was officially on board for Spidey 4.
And guys, don't forget 2012 has prime territory for S-M 5 (not to mention that's the date rumored for BB3). Either way, Spidey and Batman will go head-to-head in 2011 or 2012 (most likely the latter).

It's quite obvious they have Kraven as one of the villains
I can't imagine why else they'd want Mickey Rourke to play one of the spidey villains when his name came up in discussions before he signed onto Iron Man 2..
what else does he suit? Scorpion? Electro maybe?
So is this mean we're gonna get villain news pretty soon?
Probably not soon, but definitely by the end of the year.

I say thats a strong possibilty. Do you recall when they released the picture of the black-suit spidey?
Goran
03-15-2009, 06:29 AM
I think it was in January/February 2006.
the reason was obvious: Back then they were shooting the sequence in front of the demolished bank. They feared that black spidey could be seen during the shoot, so they released the picture to anticipate any speculation.

They better do a good job. A lot of fans and regular viewers are expecting the best movie out of all 4. I'm very excited, hopefully they pick a good cast, and good villains. Who knows, SM could return to being the best Comic Book movie franchise created if they pull this off.

Unconfirmed rumor claims that Raimi tested the RED camera (http://www.red.com/shot_on_red/) months ago for use on SM4.
Anonrighter: you can’t shoot a feature on HD today, but it’s not far off. I read somewhere recently (in an article not at all taking consideration of SAG, AFTRA or otherwise - it was about the tech) that both Raimi and Favreau were doing camera tests with Red for Spiderman 4 and Iron Man 2 respectively. You’re right about all pilots going to AFTRA after this - why wouldn’t they? - and there’s a pretty good likelihood that film will start to follow sooner or later (just like the inexorable transition to digital in professional still photography). Then, SAG is done.

The quality of the camera should be the least of anyone's worries. A solid and exciting script with great direction is where my concern is at.

^^Ahhhh, yeah, everyone knows that already. We don't need to mention in all of the posts that a good story is essential, since it is a must for everyone here. Let's just discuss these other things.
I'm curious about this red camera, too. Never heard about.
