If Mickey Rourke didn't get cast in IM2 then I would have considered him for Hogun. David Wenham for Fandral. For Volstagg I'd say either Brendan Gleeson or John Rhys Davies. Or maybe Branagh himself.

He's not one of the Aesir like Thor, Odin, and all the others. He's from another realm that was conquered by Mogul. I think some bios refer to it as Skornheim, but I'm not sure if that's where Hogun's from or if that's where Mogul was originally from.

Fandral - Simon Baker, David Wenham (assuming he hasn't gotten tired of playing supporting roles in sword and sandal movies) or possibly Peter Facinelli.

Hogun - Mark Strong, Garret Dillahunt or Michael Fassbender

Volstagg - Ideally, Gleeson. But for the sake of argument I'll also suggest Jim Beaver from Deadwood and Supernatural (assuming he can do accents).

Mr Beaver is also my back-up choice for Dum Dum Dugan, after Ted Levine.

Abraham Benrubi's a good choice. He's already got experience being a loud and obnoxious dude from ancient times as Olaf the troll. :D

FVD

Seconded on Benrubi. Had to search him up on IMDb and I recognised him right away. Plus he's 6'7" which certainly helps plus he's apparently an avid comic book collector. Branagh cast him.

Danny Trejo is an interesting choice for Hogun. And I'm kinda liking the idea of Oded Fehr too actually the more I think about it.

TheCorpulent1
03-21-2009, 10:52 AM
Yeah, Oded Fehr would be a great Hogun. Or, since Hogun's supposed to be one of the older Asgardians, maybe even Arnold Vosloo. Granted, I've never even seen Vosloo with hair, let alone the super-awesome handlebar mustache Hogun always has.

Single White Thunder God Seeks Volstagg
SpoilerTV have posted what is purported to be an official casting side for the 'Thor' movie. The casting calls for an actor to play the rotund Asgardian Volstagg:

Male. Early to mid 30s. 6'2" or taller. Obese but agile, fun, good-hearted, a warrior but prefers eating over fighting...SUPPORTING; OPEN TO ALL ETHNICITIES.

TheCorpulent1
05-22-2009, 10:10 AM
Hmm, "open to all ethnicities"? I would've thought they'd try to keep the Norse gods looking Norse, but I wouldn't mind a black or hispanic Volstagg. I'd actually prefer an Asian Hogunn, too.

Philly Phanboy
05-22-2009, 10:27 AM
I really can only see Abraham Benrubi or maybe Tyler Labine as Volstagg.

For me, "open to all ethnicites" really doesn't work for the Volstagg character. I mean can you see an Anthony Anderson as Volstagg without it turning into a farce? An Asian Hogunn would work though.

TheCorpulent1
05-22-2009, 10:31 AM
I really can't see Anthony Anderson in anything without it turning into a farce. But that's the actor, not his race. I could see a jovial fat black guy working just as well as a jovial fat white guy for Volstagg. Just depends on which jovial fat guy they get either way.

Abraham Benrubi would definitely be awesome, though. Tyler Labine seems a bit young; Volstagg's a warrior from Odin's era, remember? He's like a goofy, drunk uncle to Thor. :)

Philly Phanboy
05-22-2009, 12:51 PM
So you're taking the "open to all ethnicities" literally as being for a character appropriate actor, Corp?

I take that casting call more as being studio-speak for them wanting the role filled with a chubby "hip" actor that (1) is recognizable to the movie goers and (2) fills their marketing department's demographic quota. That's why I brought up Anthony Anderson's name.

I guess the skeptic in me fears that we'll get an Anderson long before a Benrubi and the role will be more akin to a cameo character from "Epic Movie" than a LOTR supporting character.

Keyser Soze

You really need to check out Season 4 of The Shield.

Having watched the first 3 seasons of The Shield, I literally rolled my eyes upon hearing the announcement that Anthony Anderson was joining the cast. "Whaaaat?" I thought, "The unfunny comedy guy?" I began preparing myself for The Shield to jump the shark by introducing a pratfalling comic relief into the supporting cast.

Then I actually watched his role as Antwon Mitchell develop. Intense, utterly terrifying, and as far removed from comedy as you could possibly imagine. A truly despicable, frightening villain. I watched that, and thought, "Where's THAT Anthony Anderson been all these years!?!?"

Not that I'd want him for Volstagg. I just felt the need to defend the actor on this occasion, as Anthony Anderson really is better than the material he tends to find himself doing.

Not at all the look I would expect for Hogun, but I wouldn't be averse to it. Personally, I think Oded Fehr would make a great Hogun. The casting call makes it seem like they really want someone who looks more Mongolian or Chinese, though. Hogun is supposed to look somewhat Mongolian in the comics.

Interesting potential choices we've gotten so far regarding the supporting cast. Can't wait to see who gets the role of Hogun the Grim. To be honest, I didn't know anything about the character's backstory until now. Apparently, Hogun's homeland was invaded by Mogul of the Mystic Mountain who killed his folks in the process. As far as his appearance goes, he never really struck me as being Asian; just a white dude with dark tufts of facial hair. I can definitely see the Mongolian influence in his costume now that you all mention it though.
Still, I'd much prefer someone like Scott Glenn to portray the stoic character.
He seems born for the role if you ask me!

The Warriors Three in my book should be around 30-35 looking. a ten year age difference or equivalent to mortals to the Asgardian's immortality.
The pic from Wizard of Glen Scott even when it was published is too old for Hogun. Watanabe is getting close to being too old looking too, but if Hogun's always wearing his Helmet that could hide that fact.

C listers are fine by me, as long as they are good actors. 300 was a movie filled with C listers and lower, but the movie ended up being awesome. Kind of makes you wonder, though: with Thor and Loki taken by relative unknowns, maybe the studio will want some more name power in roles that would traditionally go to character actors.

I disagree. Mostly because I dont think they'd attempt name power on smaller roles considering money, especially already getting into trouble with low-balling. Studios love trends, and Star Trek made bank with practically no name power. Now, you may say that Star Trek has a built in audience and legacy. I would say hell yes, but studios still see a trend and milk it until they cant anymore. Plus Branagh is the kind of guy who infamously needs his way and takes cinema very seriously to an almost annoying degree.
