Not only does he list the 6 we know are 100% on-board (Paltrow, Cheadle, Rourke, Rockwell, Johansson, Jackson), but he also says that Garry Shandling and John Slattery are cast.

Can't be Hawkeye the either of them... so that's good news because I don't want too many characters.

Well, looking at the casting calls (http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=319952), these guys seems to fit these descriptions:
[MALE U.S. SENATOR] 50's - 60's, an imposing man who is not easily amused... ANY ETHNICITY.
[MALE] late 40's - mid 50's. Handsome, intelligent and dynamic. Please submit Caucasian actors.

^So I'd bet Shandling is the senator and that Slatterly guy is the other one. Just my opinion, but does Slatterly look from that pic above like a dead-ringer for Justin Hammer from the comics?

I was almost thinking the same think...
Maybe, the theory that Sam is playing younger Hammer in a flash back, might still play out, with him as older Hammer

I considered that for about two seconds before I figured there was no way that could be true.
You don't hire a great actor like Rockwell to do flashbacks only to replace him in the current timeframe by an absolute nobody. They'd simply use make-up to age Rockwell so that he seems older.

Not to mention, the very first casting call they sent out was for a 30's Justin Hammer, Black Widow, and Whiplash. They aren't going to include an incredibly minor role with the two new lead ones as one of the first characters they cast.

Slattery HAS to be Howard Stark if you compare that picture to the portrait in IM1. Dude's a clone and looks like he can be RDJ's brother...
I am guessing Shandling is going to play the senator who hates everything about IM and vows to take him down publicly... or the exact opposite.

Well if Robbins is truly out then that makes sense. If we really do get Howard in flashbacks, what are the odds that Jeff Bridges could return for a small cameo as Stane again?
FaT_tONle
04-04-2009, 10:40 AM
Wouldn't be a problem to bring back Stane... they can always use makeup to cover the age along with CGI.

And here is a side by side from Slattery and Gerard Sanders (Howard Stark from IM1)

I wish they would just use Gerard Sanders again as Howard Stark. I mean, geez, he can't be THAT bad of an actor, can he? Favreau had to have known that there was a possibility down the line of flashbacks with Howard Stark, so why would he have hired Sanders to begin with? Plus, he has acting experience, it's not like he went from only being in some Britney Spears video to being in Iron Man.

Tim Robbins would have been better... maybe the budgetary concerns got the better of Marvel.

depends which role, has more scenes or character development, if the majority of the flashback scenes are the main set up for the character, and you only see the old him in a few small scenes (with little development or demand for high caliber acting)
it might be worth casting the name for just the young version, but, where it might not be worth putting him through all the make up process of ageing him, so, for the lesser scenes it would be easier to just hire a different guy
not that I believe this is the case...
just saying

Yah, but it's highly unlikely, IMO. Most of the story will be taking place in the present, rather than the past. It's not that big an expense to age someone with make-up. We'll see.

IRON MAN 2 directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle began prinicpal photography today.
On set was veteran actor Garry Shandling, yes, that Garry Shandling. I kid you not, he was confirmed as part of the cast by Robert Downey Jr. earlier this week via WENN.
Shandling was on set today in an undisclosed location shooting a large scene.
I am editing this article to clarify what was previously written to make it more clear.
Shandling is a reporter or Senator or some sort that appears in a continuation of the final scene from the first IRON MAN film, you know that famous "I am Iron Man" scene. We start this film from there is what it looks like.
Stay tuned for further information and hopefully some pics!

Sounds like he is playing the senator, and it's interesting that the very last scene was shot on the very first day of shooting
Wait, THE Senator? Like, which Senator? A Senator that maybe replaces the dignitary that gets accidently shot in the back by Iron Man? Setting up for Demon in a Bottle?

I don't know what the senator's role would be, but there was a casting call put out for a senator that matches Shandling pretty perfectly

Maybe the senator feels like it's dangerous to national security to have civilians take matters into their own hands.

Slattery briefly talks about playing Howard Stark.
You’re in the upcoming Iron Man sequel, as Robert Downey Jr.’s dad. That’s gotta be in a flashback, right?
I’m glad you said that. My kids said that. I don’t want to give anything away on it, but yeah. That makes sense, I can’t be Downey’s father, I’m not that old!

Interested in the flashback with Howard Stark. I'm guessing it will be his actions n this flashback that causes Whiplash to hold the grudge against Tony. Slattery is a good actor. Watch Mad Men.

There was a rumor about having Howard Stark appear in Captain America, which comes as no suprise. Whomever they bring in needs to be really young though, since he worked on the Manhattan Project which was about 70 years ago so I think they'd have to use a different actor. Unless Slattery can pull off a 25 year old.

Gary Shandling is playing Senator Stern, an politician who wants Tony to give his technology to the USA government.
