Sony Pictures Adapting Shadow of the Colossus

Sony Pictures will adapt the popular PlayStation 2 title "Shadow of the Colossus" into a big screen action film, with Justin Marks writing the screenplay and Kevin Misher in negotiations to produce, says Variety.
"Colossus," which was released exclusively on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, revolves around a man named Wander who must travel across a cursed wasteland and defeat 16 creatures, known as the colossi, in order to restore the life of a girl.
The project, which proved a big seller for PlayStation and was produced internally by Sony Computer Entertainment, will build upon the video game's fantasy setting of a solitary world with few characters other than the 16 enemies

Amazing game. Could make for a stunning film it done right. It's gonna need a director with a strong visual style to make it work.

I was thinking this movie could be so epic(like the game) but then realized that Galactus pointed it's being written by the same guy who did the recent Street Fighter. :(

Yeah, also it feels like it would be right up Guillermo Del Toro's alley.
What a great game that was. I also really liked Ico.

my hopes for this film were dashed once i read this...
Sadly, the writer was responsible for the latest Street Fighter-movie...
...but because this is Sony, i'll remain cautiously optimistic. as long as they get a competent director this should be a sight to behold.

Sony = Spider-Man 3? :p
Anyway, I'm SHOCKED. I'm hoping this is the real deal, but as this is a video game movie production, I won't get my hopes up.

true, but Sony's still one of my fave companies. SM3 wasn't even bad...it just wasn't awesome.

"just because it hasn't been done yet doesn't mean it can be done." - some person a long time ago :cwink:
I hope this gets stuck in production hell. Frankly, the game is one of the most overrated I've ever played and I don't see how it works as a movie. There is no plot. Guy rides horse to moster. Kills monster. Rides horse to monster. Kills monster...and so on and so on. That's it.

i STRONGLY disagree. if Shadow of the Colossus is overrated then so is every other game that is more popular than SotC and SotC isn't even that popular.
There is no plot.
did you beat the game? there is a plot, it's just not as in your face as most other games treat their plots/stories.

Agreed!
Matt, you need to beat the game as well as play ICO to understand the story more.
I like it because it's a subtle fantasy tale. Like Dorky said, it's not in your face explosive awesomness like 99% of the games being released lately, especially 1st person shooters.
That was another thing I never got, was people complaining that it was only boss fights. That's what made it so fun for me, instead of making the same typical game over, where you have to kill a **** ton of carbon copy/assembly line little bad guys you get to do some searching for these giant monstrosities. Then you have to find a way to get on them, climb them and take them down. Doing that with the score they got playing in the background made those some of the best and epic boss fights ever.
I can't say if Hollywood could ever make a film that would do the games justice.
Due to the games simple story, I have a feeling whoever writes the screenplay is going to add so much it will take away from the game and be something quite different...in a bad way.

Seriously, how the hell does this hack keep getting jobs like these? Deal with the devil? Nazi gold?

"Colossus" is the latest high-profile project for Marks, who is writing the redo of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" at Disney, with McG attached to direct. He recently landed "Suicide Squad," based on the DC Comics book, at Warner Bros., for which he's also written "Green Arrow: Escape From Supermax," also based on the DC character, and "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe."
If i remember corrrecty he did write a badass version of the green arrow script and also a pretty good He-Man script.
