That was awesome. Hasbro and Adult Swim need to make this a series. Now only problem with this special is that all the guys seem to be voiced by the same V.A. Looks like Hasbro went all out on the animation but cheaped out on the voices. To bad.

What's really ironic is that this micro series/movie (so far) doesn't seem to "adult"/"mature" for kids. There's no cussing (so far),no strong sexual innuendos, and no on screen graphically bloody violence. The content in this series is pretty much in line with (so far) the content of the all ages Code Approved G.I. JOE comic from the 80's,the STAR WARS CLONE WARS CGI animated series,EXO-SQUAD,THE LEGEND OF PRINCE VALIANT,GARGOYLES, WING COMMANDER ACADEMY,and MIGHTY MAX. So far, based on the 3 episodes I have just seen (the 3rd episode is no longer up on youtube), this series/movie is the perfect example of the type of all ages content I have been talking about in this forum (and on other message boards). This show is not too "adult" and not too "kiddy", it's some where in between.

I agree it feels very 90s like the shows you listed. Sadly it's adult because of the use of real firearms. Moms would be fine if this was like the clone wars and they fired lasers that killed masked cobra units. That and the stabbing. You saw a knife in someones back, and snake-eyes killed people with his sword and grenades. Moms would be so up in arms about this.
I'm also surprised Adult Swim is promoting this? They seem like a group that loves things from the 80s. I guess their hatred for anime also goes with anime style other shows. To bad I hate that they're trying to kill Gi:joe.

I don't think that "moms" (I take it you're referring to "soccer moms") would have a problem with the action in this show. In both the original JONNY QUEST cartoon and 90's REAL ADVENTURES OF JONNY QUEST cartoon had the use of real firearms and grenades, and have even sometimes showed people getting shot, blown up by grenades, and (in the REAL ADVENTURES series) getting hacked to death by some giant shadow puppets. THE LEGEND OF PRINCE VALIANT cartoon often showed people getting stabbed/cut by swords/knives and shot with arrows (and yes, the characters that were cut/stabbed and shot did indeed die and stayed dead) in almost every single episode, and that show was on the FAMILY CHANNEL. Heck, in one episode it was clearly stated that a baby was killed while still in it's crib as a result of a war caused by one of the shows main villains (they even showed the crib, but not the body of the baby, which the body of the dead baby was still lying in). They even did an episode about canibalism.

I've seen the shows your talking about, heck I own the real adventrues boxset. Johnny kills serveal pirates in the first episode by tricking them to crash into a rock. That was the 90s though. This is now. Moms don't want that. During the late 90s shows starting toneing back the violence, and only now are they slowly allowing more again. If this G.I.Joe show was picked up and continued no way would it air on normal cartoonetwork. At least it wouldn't air with the real firearms. Ever since they made that rule about kids guns kid shows haven't had real guns in them. At least ones that fired bullets.

idk. it's probably a good thing that it isn't aimed at kids since there are so many kids out there that emulate what they see on tv and bring guns to school and accidentally kill others.
resolute isn't aimed for kids, but b/c it's a cartoon so parents will let kids watch it. that fine line between kid's shows and those aimed a more mature audience is almost gone now. i guess it says something about our society these days, yet there's always going to be that stigma that people who watch anything animated are watching shows/movies that are for children.

Actually, the violence in cartoons started being toned down way before the late 90's, depending on whether or not the show was a network show or syndicated. Network kids cartoons are often a lot tamer then syndicated kids shows. This new G.I. JOE cartoon could definitely air on normal Cartoon Network, it would just have to carry a TV-PG rating for violence like STAR WARS CLONE WARS and NARUTO caries. Now if they wanted this show to have a TV-Y7 rating for "fantasy violence" all they have to do is change the realistic gunfire sound to the fantasy pulse laser sound (like they did with SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN and the BIG GUY AND RUSTY THE BOY ROBOT animated series).

Sneak Peek: GI Joe Resolute Finale on Adult Swim (http://www.thehdroom.com/news/Sneak_Peek_GI_Joe_Resolute_Finale_on_Adult_Swim/4632)
April 23, 2009
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/4056/4632t.jpg (http://img6.imageshack.us/my.php?image=4632t.jpg)
Hasbro's GI Joe Resolute web cartoon is gearing up for its finale that will air this weekend during Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.
Starting last Friday, two 5-minute GI Joe Resolute segments have debuted at AdultSwim.com (http://www.adultswim.com/) every weekday. Kids who grew up watching GI Joe cartoons in the 80s immediately recognize their favorite characters, only in Resolute the bullets are real and absolutely no one is immune from meeting an untimely demise.
Though Electronic Arts has no hand in Resolute, they did pass along a few teaser images from the final 10 minutes that will debut on Cartoon Network this weekend (Saturday night at midnight). Once the complete series completes airing on TV, it will become available in-full at AdultSwim.com.
Once Resolute comes to an end a bigger question begs an answer. Has there been enough interest in Resolute to develop an ongoing adult-targeted GI Joe series to air on Cartoon Network? The potential is there if scribe Warren Ellis had more than an hour to work with. You can help out the cause for an going series by catching up with segments 1-10 at AdultSwim.com (http://www.adultswim.com/).

I'm glad they've made a more adult version of the series. But they need a strong story if they want to keep it up. And I worry what would happen if little kids watched this show.
I am now all caught up and all I have to say is SWEET MERCIFUL CRAP! GIVES US MORE RESOLUTE!!!!!!!!!
This is just astounding stuff...The Snake Eyes/Stormshadow fight alone is one of THE best moments of geekdom in 2009.
Hasbro...forget Sommers and all that crap, you need to make THIS the G.I.Joe movie if you want to make dumptrucks full of cash.

Finished all 10 webisodes on YT, and holy crap that's the best GI JOE I've EVER seen. The battles are brutal, the deaths are real (I do mourn the death of my favorite character, Storm Shadow), and they pulled no punches. This is the first time they make GI JOE with adult sensibility, and not a toy commercial for young kids. Quite frankly, I don't think we need a movie now since Resolute is what GI JOE should be, and judging from the abdomination that Sommer is cooking up (stupid CC design, laughable robosuits, lame one-liners), I seriously doubt the movie will be any good when it comes out.
The Question
04-24-2009, 01:25 PM
Here's how I feel:
The Pros:
The G.I. Joe team functions like a tactically sound special operations unit. They have a technical support staff, they use the various members of the team with specific areas of expertise on missions regarding those areas instead of just storming enemy bases like regular commandoes, and when facing a major crisis they have simultaneous missions to tackle each aspect of the crisis. Which is kind of how the military would respond to a widespread terrorist attack. I also love how the have Snake Eyes actually fighting like a proper ninja. He slits peoples throats from behind their backs, sets up booby traps, and resorts to head on confrontation when the situation calls for it. In short, his uses guerilla tactics. Which is what real ninjas did.
The Cons:
Cobra. Don't get me wrong. They are a much more menacing and effective organization. But, as characters, they're all really flat and one dimensionally evil. Cobra Commander is no different than his counterpart in the original cartoon: He's a bastard for the sake of being a bastard. It's just, now, he's actually good at it. Personally, I prefer the Cobra Commander of the comics. An emotionally scarred, slightly delusional terrorist leader who organized a terrorist group, not with vague promises of wealth and power, but by an actual philosophy of militant libertarianism. On the same note, Storm Shadow, who in his best interpretations is a well meaning but vengeful man who simply gets caught up with the wrong crowd who manipulate his anger towards more destructive tendencies, is in this a whiny, selfish ******* who hates a guy just because his uncle thought he was slightly better at being a ninja. And Destro is seen with Baroness, acting like you basic sociopathic thug, instead of simply a business associate of Cobra who stayed away from doing hands on dirty work for them when possible. The best villains in the whole thing were Firefly and Zartan, and they had no lines and simply served as generic mercenaries/assassins.

Well, Zartan did have a line, or rather, a monologue he had with Scarlette like a typical villain who'd rather talk about how great he is instead of shooting the protagonist (parodied by Austin Powers). He was great early on, but unfortunately he was reduced to a stupid villain afterward.

Actually, Storm Shadow's hatred is understandable. By teaching Snake Eyes that final step, it essentially meant his uncle saw the new guy as his legacy and heir. Snake Eyes would have taken the guy's place as the master of the clan after he died. All of this used to be uncontestedly Storm Shadow's so it's no surprised he's a little sore about it. This was further worsened when he confronted his uncle and the guy basically told him point blank that Snake Eyes would be the sole inheritor of his secrets and Storm Shadow would not get anything. Should that be enough reason to kill? Probably not but it's probably enough motivation. People have done crazy things over pride, jealousy and feelings of betrayal.

So when they're seen killing people they're cool, but when they talk they're back to being stupid characters?

So when they're seen killing people they're cool, but when they talk they're back to being stupid characters?
Villains in movies always like to talk for minutes before they kill the hero, and during their self-indulgence they are usually taken down by someone who saved the day. Zartan became such a villain in Resolute when he did the same to Scarlette and thus gave Duke an opening to save the dame.

As cool and great as this mini series is, I don't want this to bec ome an ongoing "adult" series aimed squarely at adults on ADULT SWIM. However, I would like to see a SLIGHTLY toned down TV-PG rated middle ongoing G.I. JOE series that is both suitable for and appealing to both kids and adults on CARTOON NETWORK. In other words, I want to see an all ages G.I. JOE cartoon that is done in a similar way as the CGI CLONE WARS series is currently being done.

Well this probably won't be a series. It looks like it was basically written as a one off special that they divided up into a bunch of parts.
Its not like how Star Wars clone wars started.
I think a better tone to go for is something like WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN which is made appropriate for kids but its not . . . dumb. And its quite dark and grim at times.
That would be a better tone since Clone Wars stinks up the joint quite often and Asoka is like nails on a chalkboard.

Clone Wars just isn't that good IMO....GI Joe is a different animal because the fanbase is different...can they do something that has a wide appeal...maybe...but is it worth the time to do so?

yes it would be worth it. remember the wider the audience, the longer a franchise can endure/last.
The over whelming majority of Marvel and DC comics have been aimed at a very narrow and shrinking adult readership for several years now, and we have seen the obvious huge negative effect that has had on sales.

Yes, but GI JOE as a toyline. Its not like a Marvel/DC universe. GI JOE originated as toys.
The new toys that are selling very well, their largest audience are collector, older figure enthusiasts. 25th Anniversary has been selling for Hasbro better than anything GI JOE in a long time.
Also it doesn't look like Resolute was meant to be anything more than Resolute anyway.

Watched the finale on youtube. Was fairly disappointed with Cobra Commander. Yes, he was more ruthless than previous cartoon incarnations but the way they executed it still left him incompetent. I mean, why kill the messenger? It's not like he messed up and it just leaves you with even less manpower.

And when those older figure enthusiasts are no longer around to collect the figure, who will be their to replace them? Aiming a product that was ORIGINALLY created for kids/all ages at an adult niche audience is short term thinking.
I do agree with you that RESOLUTE seems to be an entity onto itself and was never meant to be a regular series.

All things considered I liked the final product. It was obviously written to be close to the mid to late first generation G.I. Joe comic. This fact puts it ahead of the previous animated series or the Devil's Due take on G.I. Joe.
I'd definitely suggest that they go after some different voice actors though if they were going to make this into a regular series. :ninja:

Maybe the Red Ninjas might resurrect him (didn't they do something like that for Snake Eyes in the comics?) or maybe Cobra had him cloned? Or maybe he'll come back as a cyborg (don't hit me. But seriously, what do you think of a ninja cyborg?). :woot:

In the comics, Storm Shadow NEVER killed a JOE and he was actually a good guy on his personal quest for revenge. If I had only ONE problem with this series/movie it is the MOSTLY out of character portrayal and final fate of Storm Shadow.

You'll be fine. My main knowledge of G.I. Joe is the animated film and more recently the IDW reboot. I LOVED Resolute. I'd buy it for myself, but it went on my Christmas list instead. This movie blows the live action one out of the water. Not that is was much of a challenge. And I am not one of those people that thinks every sequel, prequel or live action version sucks. I hate to say a film sucks and I only say it about a few films.

It might turn into a tv series. Someone at work said it was, but honestly, I hadn't heard anything about it and havn't looked it up. I presume if the DVD sells well enough we'll get a tv series out of it.
And it started out as I think 12 five minutes webisodes. It was meant to air online first and then as the movie (which it did).
