Trailer:
Coming Soon!
Trailer is rumored to be with Harry Potter HBP. I just finished the third book in the series and am kinda looking forward to this. Columbus proved with the first two Potters he can handle it though Im afraid this can either go great or horribly wrong. The cast is pretty darn fantastic for the most part.

Could be wrong, usually am, but I think this will be met with the same reception of recent fantasy films like City of Embers, Inkheart, or Birdge to Jersey/Terabithia(sp?).
One giant eh.
Until Potter is done and on DVD shelves, I don't think anything will be able to move in on that territory with any serious reward.

Considering the fact that the studio behind this is Fox, I'm not going to expect anything great.

Yeah the teaser/trailer will be attached to Harry Potter next week, but it'll probably be online before since it's Fox and I doubt they care about a WB pic.
Hopefully it's a full on trailer since the movie opens in February.

Hopefully it's a full on trailer since the movie opens in February.
It's not. It's basically depicting the lead character going into the Empire State Building, retrieving a set of elevator keys and using them to go up to the highest floor. When the doors open, there's a shot of Mount Olympus with Percy being awed and then it shows the release date. No glimpses of Catherine Keener, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean or Pierce Brosnan. Just the lead guy and the night watchman. (They're still shooting the movie, so I suppose we'll get a full trailer around November/December with the rest of the cast.)
And yeah, since it's attached to HP6, Fox takes full advantage of Columbus' involvement with the series with the tag "From the director of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" & "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." I think Columbus has a solid partnership with Fox, he's done six films with them so maybe he has final cut/say over this movie.

Is it just me or are more full trailers being released closer to the actual release date?

Man.
Like, I want to love the hell out of this property because it seems like something I would try to write myself, but on the other hand, it's such a blatant attempt to become the new "it" franchise that it's almost sickening.
Oh well. I'll play the optimist card for now. I want to read the first book.
TheComicbookKid
08-24-2009, 10:42 PM
Yeah, I'm sure if Chris Columbus wasn't attached, they wouldn't be getting so much attention. Especially in light of how many recent "franchises" tried to take that crown recently and failed.
Anywho, possible poster for the movie

Pretty cool poster (if it is real) with the combination of Percy's sword (Riptide) with Poseidon's Trident (although there appears to be a "the" missing before "Olympians" which makes me think it may be a "fan" effort - unless the "the" is inside the "O" of "Olympians").
And from the single picture, it looks like they might be going with the more traditional "Greek" version of a Satyr (which didn't have the horns and lower body of a goat) rather than the Roman "Faun" type which is what Grover more closely resembled in the books. Or they just couldn't be bothered including "horns" on Grover and he may still have the lower half of a goat (albeit covered by jeans).
Cheers.

I hated the long title too but it grew on me just because it's so weird to say it all.

Yeah in the official logo, the "the" is inside the O.

I figure since they hired Brandon, they couldn't hide horns behind wavy hair so they probably cut them.

Who says those movies will even be good. Both of these movies have had so many shifts on when they were being released. Wolfman has had a lot of production problems and Shutter island was suppose to be released earlier this year, cause most of the Leo and Martin movies release in holiday season to become oscar movies....why was this movie dumped to Feb and taken out of consideration for Oscars? Lack of confidence from the Studio? Hey they can turn out to be good movies..but I'm a bit iffy at this point.

Good God. A Scorsese move bad? It doesn't have to be shifted to be Oscar bait doesn't mean it will be terrible if it's moved. I don't get how the hell people think of this. Wolfman was reshot for more action (which I hope won't make it suffer) and SI was moved because they ran low on marketing money. They spent an assload on the other big films this summer.

Who knows, Lord Blackbolt. All three movies could suck balls. In light of 300, Inglourious Basterds, and D9, the old rules about what months suck no longer really apply, imo. The studios can put better quality material in any month.

I hope this is better than the book. The series leaves alot to be desired. It's all action and no characterization which actually might translate well in a movie series because the movies can actually work to fix that problem. I can't believe I just thought that.

Why is Annabeth a brunette? That's my only squabble with the teaser trailer right now. I'm hoping Chris Columbus can squeeze out a decent movie since he has the experience of making the first two Potter movies. Unfortunately, he also directed I Love You, Beth Cooper which failed miserably. I hope I'm not taking a gamble by putting my faith in him.

Personally, I think Columbus wanted to lessen as many similarities to the Potter franchise he helmed. Blonde female lead, ages of the children, and made Grover black.

The title is way too long. They should have just called it "The Lightning Thief". If anyone liked it enough to make more, they could have introduced the Percy Jackson preface for the sequel, ala Indiana Jones. I hate it that they are setting it up as a series already. Lets see if we like it first.
Some adaptations have the clout to get away with it (LOTR, Narnia). But who the f**k is Percy Jackson? He needs to prove himself before his name gets to sell a movie.

They are if you are into simple mindless action with not much in the way of characterization or plot. Percy Jackson is basically a poor man's Harry Potter.

Character posters are okay. I wonder if Riptide is actually a trident rather than a sword in the movie? Perhaps they wanted to ensure the hero had a unique and easily identifiable weapon (as well as being more marketable).
And is Annabeth's shield wrong? I thought she carried the Aegis with the Gorgon's head design? Or maybe that was only later in the books? Or I could be making up the whole thing - that's pretty likely.
Finally, I wish Gopher looked a little more "mythological", although he seems to be sporting an incredibly hairy left arm in that photo? I don't recall that from the books?
Percy's other solo poster is pretty cool. I wish they'd worked on his "motion" through the water through to give a stronger impression that he can "control" the water. Still, looks pretty cool. And not seeing his face adds some mystery to the whole thing.
Has anyone heard anything about toys for the film? I'm surprised that someone hasn't started marketing the crap out of the film? I would have at least thought they'd have something in stores for the pre-Christmas spending.
Cheers.

Not a huge fan of 4" scale figures, but perhaps the true scale is 5" (as for Zeus) and the kids are 4" due to being kids and everything. Not making the "girl" ("female action figures don't sell") is pretty poor form.

Well that's what I surmised. Could be wrong.
I think its Percy and Luke fighting.
I've read the first book and while the writing left much to be desired, the content was ample enough to keep me interested throughout, and when said content is about Greek mythology, so much the better.

Yikes! The Medusa poster looks terrible. I can't believe they would release that.
The photoshop efforts of the other posters isn't great either. The lighting/blending/whatever it is called around the hairlines is particularly bad.
Still looking forward to seeing the film. Even if it's dumb, I at least hope it is fun.
Cheers.

Well, if it gets good reviews, I say go for it. Otherwise throw it in the pile with the other kid-fantasy flicks and burn it.
Fox is desperately trying to jump-start the Percy Jackson bandwagon as their own Harry Potter franchise. Hence why they got Chris Columbus (who directed the first two HP films) to produce and direct it... most of the promotional material heavily emphasizes "From the director of 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'..."
As a film, it could be fun. Anything directed by Chris Columbus is automatically better than being force-fed that horrid Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise.

Hopefully Fox has learned their lessons from Eragon...which I'm sure would've been their LOTR had they made enough for the whole Inheritance Cycle. Not that the books were that great, but the movie was terrible.

I like the look of trailer but after they butchered Eragon I have no faith with Fox's name being on this, never read the books and looks interesting and the kid who plays Percy was superb in 3:10 To Yuma.

So, The Exterminator is meant to be Hades right? Or is that Ares? Looks more like Coogan than Winstone, but I have no idea.
Actually, I'm pretty sure its Hades:
http://percyjackson.org/cast/high-quality-stills-from-the-lightning-thief-movie/
I don't understand why they refuse to provide the actual "names" for any of the characters. Mystery? The "Fatal Beauty" is obviously Medusa (a VERY poorly CGI created Medusa, but still Medusa).
And I cannot comprehend why they would release that Medusa poster. The few seconds we see of Medusa in the "Clash of the Titans" trailer is 1,000 times better than that poster. They should have stuck with the hair-scarf for the posters if they couldn't get the snakes right.
As for Athena, I thought she did have a son. Not by conventional means though. Something about Hephaistos attempting to have his way with her or something. And we all know that of the three, only Artemis was the true virgin. Athena and Hestia certainly got around the pantheon.
Cheers.

i don't doubt that he could do both, but the only leading man to play 2 popular leading roles (that i can think of) at the same time is Harrison Ford (Han Solo and Indy). normally an actor can only handle 1 popular character at a time. as for his chances if Percy fails....Logan seems like a good actor that will get work regardless of if Percy is successful or not. those other actors/actresses in those movies you named weren't all that great.

I don't really understand this line of thought. Actors get more work when their movies succeed not fail, unless your Nic Cage.
I mean, nothing is guaranteed either way, but for a studio looking at a huge reboot, someone that has successfully opened a movie to the target demo they want is probably more appealing. Otherwise, no one would even be mentioning Robert Pattinson except as a joke. Efron is okay from what I hear, but it's the same logic.

That sounds like a good bet. Nothing is coming out until March with Alice in Wonderland(and that may not even be good).

I have two feelings about this? One, it's going to flop big. Two, it's going to make a considerable amount of money. It could go either way.
Whenever you flip a coin with somebody you always say, "heads I win, tails you lose", don't you?

The reviews I have read so far are very positive!
Here's (http://www.heyuguys.co.uk/2010/02/08/review-percy-jackson-and-the-lightening-thief/) a detailed one.
The CGI used to create these snakes is absolutely fantastic with the multitude of snakes attached to her having their own personality yet still being in touch with and linked to Medusa’s thoughts and persona. Massive credit to the guys who created the special effects for this movie because they are simply brilliant.
And from another review (http://www.urbancinefile.com.au/home/view.asp?a=16577&s=Reviews):
Uma Thurman as Medusa, the gorgon with a coiffure of writhing snakes and stone-inducing hypnotic gaze is one of the highlights of this bewitching fantasy that juxtaposes Greek Mythology with contemporary American culture.
After this medicore posters of Uma's Medusa, I am very happy that she turns out to be very cool:word:

during Star Wars time PG was a little different.
And The Incredibles was rare...a PG film that's actually geared more towards adults than kids.
But for this one...the core characters are all "kids". which makes a big difference to me.
But when the original STAR WARS films were rereleased several years ago, and the first 2 prequel movies were released, they all were still rated PG. Also, the 2nd FANTASTIC FOUR 2,ERAGON,and the DRAGONBALL movie were all rated PG.

Im thoroughly entertained by watching the female lead's Yellow Pages commercial...so I'm sure I'll like it well enough. The closer it gets to release, the more I think it'll be a Netflix for me though.

my gf is taking her younger brother to see this on Friday...I'm gonna go with them because I actually think it looks good and I loved Chris C's HP adaptations...but more importantly the full Last Airbender trailer is going to be attached so thats definitely a plus for me. But PJ still looks pretty good regardless.

garrr...I keep debating this movie. I won't want to waste free movie tickets on something that's going to end up being so kid friendly that it alienates adults.
I saw Aliens in the Attic because I figured it'd be adult friendly...you know, something like Batteries Not Included. But it turned out to be nothing more than a super dumbed down kid film.
That's the only thing holding me back...can't decide! ARGH!

Its not hard to figure out what this film is aimed at. Its the Harry Potter teen audience but thank god not the Twilighters. I expect some fun not an adult intended film. There Wolfman for adults so will balance myself out that day with the kid in me and the adult cravings.

I'm looking forward to this one. The only potential problem I see is the movie, from what I've seen in the clips and trailers, takes alot of liberties with the book.
There does look to be some great scenes though, like the Hades one as some of you mentioned.

What? Is the Minotaur in this Percy Jackson film?
What? Is the Minotaur in this Percy Jackson film?
Yes it is.
In case of being Kid friendly, yes this supposed to be enjoyed by both adults and kids. But that may soon change when it reaches the third book, thats when things get more serious.

wow . I been watchign some of these clips online , alot of spoilers , unless there is alot more to it.
This is the Worst adaption of a fantasy book I have ever seen. I saw it last night at Midnight and being a HUGE fan of the book I was rather pissed off the entire movie. I hope this bombs simply because I do not want the other books to be butchered. I went in with the lowest possible expectations and I was STILL dissapointed. It was like 5% adaption 95% made up. The acting was sub-par at best and the Effects really were nothing to write home about. I'M MAD AS HELL. Chris Colombus should be ashamed of himself. I just really hope that the rights go to someone who can handle them instead of FOX they have really ruined another Franchise already. Again I went in as a HUGE fan and still am of the Books but there is just too much wrong in this movie. Percy is 16 not 12? Certain characters are mixed together or all together missing. HUGE scenes are not in the movie. Oh and no one but Percy looks like they should in the book. Its just bad. Very Very Bad. I really think if you gave me $150 million i honestly could make a better picture with lesser talent. I know that is a big thing to say but thats how bad I thought this was. If your a fan of the BOOKS do not see this, its too much dissapointment. Oh and for Sean Bean lovers he does not even redeem this.

saw it last night.....extreeeemelly filled woth cheesy scenes dialoge and plot moments.
with that said, it was still somehow entertaining. Maybe cause i went in with such low expectations... and the vfx were actually amazing at times!, which is surprising from a Fox film.
and the Uma as medusa scenes were actually not as bad when i saw it in context. It was prob my favorite thing about the movie.
there was plenty of stupid **** though... as if whoever wrote this didnt completely ever know anything about greek mythology. and the fact that all the monuments of world are mythological places was freakin retarded... the Hollywood sign is the entrance to the Underworld (in this movie called Hell, and hades looks like the devil).
5.6 out of 10... silly ridiculous film, but great vfx and directed/acted as best they could with that cheesy script.

Well the Mythological Places being in certain places around America is explained in the book which is not explained AT ALL in the movie, something that bothers me ALOT, so yeah the whole Nashville scene (not in the book) was well retarded. Yeah I agree on Hades that was just ill performed and horribly visualized.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I just wanted to talk about one of Hush's complaints. The one reason they upped the characters ages was to avoid even more comparisons with Harry Potter.

i thought it was an awesome looking design and vfx... but not for Hades lol
and the underworld looked like hell from Constantine (again cool design but not for the underworld).
As i remember the underworld wasnt for bad people.. its just where people's souls go after they die. dont know why it looked like just a place of torture and fire.

Something seemed cool about this Hades being more Modern day corky and a bit Crazy looking. I have not seen it so can't relate until Sunday but i think most seemed aimed at teens more or less but i often go to films to rekindle the child like feeling inside you get sometimes with films like this.

i'm still going to see this...never read the book but want to be entertained and it looks ok. i don't think its going to make a lot at the BO, and it will probably only pull in about as much as Spiderwick Chronicles did...71m-80 total. But I hope I'm wrong...I'd hate to see another adaptation stunted after only 1 movie.

Hannibal Smith

That's hard to say for compeletly different characters. I am sure Spider-Man people are hoping this flops but i hate seeing this be another Golden Compass or Spiderwick for i liked those movies but got no success largely because bad release time. Thses fantasy films are always released in slow months.

The kids in this thought seemed better then the Narnia kids. Mind you its by Trailer and Clip observations but seemingly wise the 3 main kids seemed fine.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I just wanted to talk about one of Hush's complaints. The one reason they upped the characters ages was to avoid even more comparisons with Harry Potter.
Well thats just it, you dont need to up the ages if you adapt it correctly its very different from Potter. Now they have a sticky mess on there hands for ANY sequels enless they just do different stories in all the remaining films. Plus its the innocence of a 12 Year old getting a huge revelation that makes it such a great story. He does not care about girls or anything yet, he just wants to have an adventure. You lose that by upping the age.
I just mean performance wise. I don't expect him to act like Peter or SPider-Man or anything. Just a performance where it's fair to judge that he's capable.
He was the strongest of the leads and he has potential, he would make a decent Spidey, not sure on Parker though.

Well fantasy completely ignored Black people. I mean traditional Fantasy like Rings and so on. I don;t mean Avatar and Star Wars. I do not recall a main black kid to the exception of Dean Thomas in the Potter films and he was a secondary character.

Nah. He actually got to be the hero in a few situations. It skirted the edge but didn't crossover.
That movie should not have worked at all, but I walked out with a smile on my face. It's cotton candy. Light and fun. I have COTT for the dark and gritty stuff.

Well, if you aren't digusted by the changes by the time the credits run and just want to leave, there's an extra scene a minute into the credits(after the main cast list).
