Personally I had a low opinion of Slumdog Millionare, thought it was overhyped and overated. I really don't think it deserved the spotlight the night of the oscars and didn't deserve to win all those oscars, but that's just me.
Anyways, moving on I really liked the Sharukh Khan and Kajol film called Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. I thought it was the definition of a true indian classic, if there are any indians on these boards, you can relate to me on this. In my opinion it was and probably will be the only movie that I'll ever rate a perfect 10/10, but I can't predict what's out there in the future so I don't know. I also loved Hum Aapke Hain Koun with Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan. It was bloody brilliant! 9.9/10. I thought Hum Hain Rahee Pyaar Ke with Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla was a great comedy 9.9/10 as well. No movies can compare to those of the 90's for me, those times will never come back, damn wish it would though. I liked Kuch Kuch Hota Hai 9.8/10 for me, which was also quite amusing. Hum Tum was amazing, 9.7/10. I could go on and on like this but I'll let you guys decide. Dil Ka Rishta and Khakee were great too.

Oh really? Can I be in it? Jking.:woot: but yeah cast someone like Madhuri Dixit or Kajol Devgan. Those are two of the hardest working actresses out there and with them I'm sure you'll get the job done well, they are top-notch actresses and have yet to play in this kind of cross-over film that you're talking about, so it would be a change in a good way and very diverse, as to roles they have already taken and played. Madhuri lives here in Denver, Colorado, so if you can try and get in touch with her to shoot your next film. Good luck with the film and maybe this actor can be the new up and coming Shahrukh Khan of the next 2 or 3 decades, who knows. I wish you luck man.

OMG dude, you are so lucky any Indian like me would die to be in your position and be anywhere in the film industry. If this turns out a success, you owe it me, cause i'm praying for this man. Haven't really seen that many Vivek films but I'll check them out, hopefully he'll get his breakthrough role with this film as the leading male actor and find someone to play the leading female actress, and next thing you know you'll be at the oscars, waiting for your name to be announced for the award by someone famous like idk Johnny Depp.

On the bright side, 2008 was not a bad year at all, Jaane Tu....Ya Jaane Na was pretty good 8/10. Ghajini was no way more entertaining than Memento. 5/10 for ghajini. 1997 Dil To Pagal Hai 8.3/10 for me, pretty satifying but still a little to short. Yes Boss, was 7.5/10 in my views, overall it was good. Duplicate was 7.4/10, it was good but far from great. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani was about 7.8/10 for me, very nicely done, very well thought out. Chal Mere Bhai, was 7.7/10 for me, I liked it but still mistakes here and there. Kabbie Khushie Kabbie Ghum was 7.4/10 for me, loved some parts, others were boring though. Lagaan was 8.2/10 for me, Ishq was 7.6/10 tough. Quayamat Se Quayamat Tak was 8.2/10 and Jo Jetta Wohi Sikander was 7.9/10. Andaz Apna Apna, was 7.9/10 and Baazigar was 7.9/10. Khakee was 7.6/10 and Dil Ka Rishta was 7.9/10. Bobby and Namak Halal were equally rated in my opinion by me, as 7.9/10. Devdas and Humtare Hain Sanam were 7.7/10.

Well the only American movie sing-alongs that I've seen were probably Mamma Mia and Grease. Bollywood films are not worse than American films just because they have more songs, they are just different. You have probably seen the bad movies, watch dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge, that is a really good film came out in 1995 but amazing and mind-blowing. you have to see it, must-see for anyone doubting bollywood films.

Bollywood movies suck. Period. You get the occasional gem like Saawariya (Beloved)
I should know. I live in the Indian capital of New Delhi after all
The movies are primarily made for non-city folk who go to theaters to forget about their extremely harsh lives for 2 hours. Or the older generations. The filmmakers are only interested in money and most of the actors save a few are unlikeable jerks or can't act all together.
Bollywood films use female charecters like set pieces.
The song and dance nonsense is getting old.
Half the films end with a stupid marriage or something...
ARRRGHHHH!!!

No.....
There was actually. Came out in 2002 and starred Tomei, Heather Graham and Jimi Mistry. It's not a very memorable movie for a lot of people I bet. It bombed at the U.S. box office as well.
Also, I've never seen a Bollywood film, but I'd be open to watching one.

First of all, thank god for this thread! I've been a closet Bollywood fan since hardly anyone I know (who is not Asian) are into it like I am but I've managed to convert a few of my non-Asian friends. I was first exposed to Bollywood when I lived in Asia for 4 years and the film that captured my interest and turned me into a fan was the one you mentioned below, DDLJ. Whenever I hear songs from the film soundtrack, I get goosebumps.
As for Slumdog Millionaire, I like it. A LOT! Although I don't consider it a typical Bollywood movie.
Anyways, moving on I really liked the Sharukh Khan and Kajol film called Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. The films bolded, I've seen all of them and enjoyed them very much. I'd say my top 3 Bollywood films would be 1) DDLJ, 2) KKHH and 3) Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham (sp?). If you noticed, I am sure you do, all three paired Shah Rukh with Kajol. They're my favorite Bollywood pair. I also love the pairing of Aishwarya and Salman in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Another one of my favorite Bollywood movie.
Oh really? Can I be in it? Jking.:woot: but yeah cast someone like Madhuri Dixit or Kajol Devgan. I love those 2 actresses, especially Madhuri. OMG! I don't care what anyone thinks but I think she's the most beautiful and talented actress in Bollywood. I LOVE watching her dance, especially classical Indian dance. And her megawatt smile, its infectious and I bet she lights up any room she walks into with that beautiful smile. As a woman, I am not ashamed to admit that I think I've got a crush on her.

All the ones bolded, I've seen. Bolded and underlined, I've seen and enjoyed. Baazigar was Kajol's first movie, wasn't it? I thought Chal Mere Bhai was pretty funny but I am sure some things are lost in translation as I don't understand Hindi and watch with subtitles.
I hate bollywood films. they go into song and dance every 5 minutes and the plots are always the same.
Hahaha! Sometimes that can get annoying and when the songs seem to have nothing to do with the scene before it, it's just downright ridiculous but I find that to be the charm of Bollywood. I guess for me, it's something... different. I enjoy the custome changes during a song. The song would be like... 5 minutes and they'd have at least a half dozen costume changes and maybe the same number of different locations in one song. :D
I've seen most of the ones you've mentioned. There's no variety in the plots. They always deal with family issues...
I happen to like the ones that deal with family issues. The ones that reflect the Indian culture. I love action movies, too, so if you know any good Bollywood action movies, recommend to me? The last time Bollywood film I watched was over a year ago, Dhoom 2, when I traveled to Singapore and watched it at a friend's home on DVD. Dang, that Hrithik dude sure can move. A looker and a good actor to boot. I saw him in Mission Kashmir and Fiza and liked both films, too. There's another film I saw with Shak Rukh that dealt with terrorism. The one where he was singing and dancing on a train to the song "Chaiya Chaiya". I forgot the film title. Do you know what film I'm talking about?

DBella, if you like the actor Hrithik Roshan then you may be interested in the movie Krrish, which is an Indian superhero film. It's filled with cheese (IMO) but you may like it. It's actually a squel to the movie Koi...Mil Gaya, so you may want to check that one out first if you haven't seen either of them yet. I believe they're even making another sequel called Krrish 2.

One of the top Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor is making a splash in Hollywood on the Fox TV Show "24" where there is a chance he gets yelled at by Jack Bauer. He was just cast for the new season of the hit show.
Of course, he plays a Middle Easterner.

I've seen Koi... Mil Gaya. That's the one with the alien that looks like ET, right? Not checked out the sequel yet. Superhero? I'll have to check that out. However, over here where I'm currently at (Japan), I've not found a store where I can rent Bollywood films. When I lived in VA, I used to go to this Indian grocery store like... once a week to rent. At first they found it odd that a white chick would be interested in Indian films, they were curious and asked a lot of questions. I felt interrogated, but by friendlies, so I didn't mind. I don't mind cheesy when I expect cheesy. In fact, when I expect cheesy, I better get cheesy! :p

Actor's US 'detention' prompts outrage in India
By NIRMALA GEORGE, Associated Press Writer Nirmala George, Associated Press Writer
Sun Aug 16, 8:54 am ET
NEW DELHI – Angry fans burned a U.S. flag in protest Sunday, a Cabinet minister suggested searching visiting Americans and an actress tweeted her outrage after Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he was detained for questioning at a U.S. airport.
Though U.S. immigration officials denied he was formally held, fellow Indian film stars and political leaders condemned what they called "humiliating" treatment given to Khan, a Muslim who is well-loved in a largely Hindu country. One Cabinet minister suggested a "tit-for-tat" policy toward Americans traveling to India.
Angry fans in the northern city of Allahabad shouted anti-U.S. slogans and burned an American flag.
Khan said he was detained Friday by U.S. immigration officials at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey because his name came up on a computer alert list.
The actor is in the U.S. to promote a new film, "My Name is Khan," which is about racial profiling of Muslims after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
The story was front-page news in India, where the ability to avoid being frisked at airports is seen as a status symbol. Politicians, sports celebrities and film stars often claim VIP status to avoid security checks.
"My name is Khan? Too bad. SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) feels the heat of American paranoia," said The Times of India, quoting Khan as saying he felt "angry and humiliated."
Khan later downplayed the incident. "I think it's a procedure that needs to be followed, but an unfortunate procedure," he told reporters Saturday in suburban Chicago.
U.S. customs officials told The Associated Press that Khan was questioned as part of a routine process that took 66 minutes. Spokesman Elmer Camacho said Khan was not detained, "but it took a little longer because his bag was lost by the airline."
"Shocking, disturbing n downright disgraceful. It's such behavior that fuels hatred and racism. SRK's a world figure for God's sake. Get real!" actress Priyanka Chopra said on her Twitter feed.
The federal information minister, Ambika Soni, angrily suggested that India adopt a similar policy toward Americans traveling to India.
In the Indian capital, New Delhi, a small group of photo-waving fans shouted slogans in support of Khan.
The U.S. ambassador, Timothy J. Roemer, on Saturday said the U.S. Embassy was trying to "ascertain the facts of the case — to understand what took place."
Khan, 44, has acted in more than 70 films, and has consistently topped popularity rankings in India for the past several years.

The Chaiya Chaiya song you were talking about is from the movie 'Dil Se'...The movie was pretty average to begin with, but the songs were awesome..Its from the same music director that did Slumdog....I recommend you also watch 'Taal' starring Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai, if you haven't seen it...A great musical film..
On a personal level, I don't really care for Bollywood films that much, coz I think most of them lack logic...Though I love Aamir Khan and will watch any of his films, coz he's the most method driven actor in Bollywood and I'm sure 90% of his films are pretty good...
Being a South Indian though, I think a lot of gem of films are made in South India too, but unfortunately they don't get the exposure of Bollywood...

Yes, "Dil Se"!! Thank you! That Chaiya Chaiya song (I call it 'the train song' :o) is my favorite scene in the movie. :D Yes, I know it's the A.R. Rahman did the song for that movie and Slumdog. I've seen "Taal", too. I looked it up, saw the DVD cover and yup, seen it! I liked that one a lot. I'm guessing if there's atleast 3 Indian restaurants by the place you stay..You should go and ask the restaurant owners or waiters if they know of any place you can rent movies from..They'd know better usually, I'm guessing! I know a particular Tamil film actor has a crazy fan following in Japan...So I'm pretty sure if you look up the right place, you should be able to find a store that rents movies...But again Asia being Asia, you might get a lot of newly released stuff you can watch for free on the internet..I do that sometimes too :hehe:...Not sure if they'd have subtitles though :csad:

I like Aamir Khan in "Lagaan" A LOT!Aamir khan is great in a lot of other movies than Lagaan...Watch Rangeela, 1947: Earth, Dil Chahta Hai, Ghulam, Rang de Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and Luck by Chance (very good movie, but Aamir guest stars) if you get a chance :yay:
Recommend me some good Southern films you think I might enjoy via PM. I am not sure how I'm going to be able to get my hands on them but I can try to look online. Southern Indian film industry is called Bollywood, too? Will do Cous. But I just doubt if they'd have subtitles in them...There is an actor called Kamal Hassan who hails from the South...Hes considered one of the finest actors India has ever produced...Most of his films are really great, but they'd be different from Bollywood as films from the South have a more regional feel to them...I can send you over some of his good films on PM as well...Southern film industry is called Kollywood if they're Tamil films or Tollywood if theyre Telugu films.. Notice the multiple ways of ripping off Hollywood :hehe::oldrazz:
Seen both the films I bolded. I like Devdas a lot. The costumes are AMAZING!! Madhuri Dixit looked, acted and danced like a goddess in that movie. The music was brilliant, too. There was one song in Mohabattein that brought tears to my eyes and I don't understand a word they're saying! :O :pHahaha...Girls cry for everything :p...So is Madhuri your fav. Bollywood actress? A good choice I would say...She's one of the few that can act, looks good and dances great too :yay:

there are alot, but its easy to just recomment an actor that you should look out for, its a guy called Kamal Haasan, i've seen all the greats of acting and this guy beats them all IMO, he's the one guy in South Indian Cinema that actually does try different things and succeeds. I download south indian movies and i've found 3 with Subs if you'd like to watch them.

yeah, the guy is nothing short of a living legend IMO, i wish more south indian actors were like him. I remember watching Guna when i was about 10 or 11 and crying all the way home. I still cant watch that movie without crying like a baby.

Thanks to the Zee tv and other tv stations , there's isn't a day when i haven't seen something bollywood on tv :oldrazz:.
Although i have to admit that i'm more of an old school fan with the 70's bollywood movies being listed as my favorite. KAALIA , DON , MUKKADER KA SIKANDER ...well pretty much every Amitabh Bachchan movie in the 70's :hehe:
Another one of my favorite actors is Mithun Chakraborty. However while i enjoy AMitabh Bachchan's movie for the acting , i enjoy Mithun's movies for their Grindhouse legacy. Disco Dancer is EPIC And COMMANDO...seriously how can a movie with Mithun as a commando , Danny as a character named "Ninja" and star wars movie fail :oldrazz:.
Aso the black & white classics are great.
Hum Aapke Ke hain Kaun was great. I'm not that big of a fan of the love story movies but i don't mind it if it's done a very fun way like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
While i do like Aamir's Khan's movies, i thought that GAjini tried to hard to be this serious movie. It worked ( aside from the VERY COLORFUL song & dance numbers) but IMO the moment he kicked that guy's head and put the bad guy's face backwards was just the moment where the movie lost all credibility. Coming off a high like Lagaan and Mangal Panday , i found Gajini very disaspponting IMO.
And the least said about Quayamat Se , the better :cwink:
I blame movies like that for the suicide wave amongst young lovers in my native country.
I swear if the majoritty of bollywood actors could also sing and not have a indian accent , these guys would've made perfect broadway stars.
