View Full Version : Tom Kalmaku Casting...anyone?

I thought there was already a thread. In my opinion, this character may secretly be one of the most important cast. If the script doesn't change much from the leaked version, Tom's character is by far the weakest and could easily become the focus of fan ire after the movie is released. The actor who plays Kalmaku will need to be prepared to turn **** into...something edible.
Since this is Hollywood, the actor doesn't need to be Alaskan as long as they are sorta kinda Alaskan looking. As such, my preference goes to Dexter's C.S. Lee.

If you are a fan, or have simply watched the show - you will probably know that the character most frequently serves as the comedic relief. Lee has shown a real knack for comedy, succeeding in pulling off cheesy sexual jokes into something genuinely chuckle worthy. Yes, he's Korean - so his casting is just the sort of racially ambivalent choice we are almost sure to get anyway.

He looks older than I'd imagine Tom to be. I guess it's not really a big deal, how old Tom Kalmaku is, though

Hell, Rainn Wilson I could get down with.
But somehow I always imagined Tom as slightly overweight. And Tom could be great. He was alright in the script, it was just the humor that was written for him.

Good choice!
I think John Cho would be another good choice for Tom....

Rainn Wilson playing Alaskan? Nice.
He could be great? Not without a massive rewrite of the character.
What did Tom do in the script? He made jokes and acted like Anthony Anderson from Transformers. He wasn't a real human being.

Just the humor needs to be improved.

I think his humor would probably be best improvised anyway. Especially bouncing off of Ryan Reynolds.
And good Pacific/Asian actors comedic actors? Can Judd Apatow give us a reference?

Ken Jeong would be good

Yeah, him and Reynolds together should be hilarious. That can also be one of the time where Reynolds can kinda improv on his own.

But yeah Jeong right now is my no. 1 choice.

Other than Jeong, I would like to see someone who's normal looking who happens to be a geeky type. Tom in Secret Origins and the rest of Geoff's run has been younger and a decent looking dude.
If he ends up being chubby or whatever, it's too on the nose.

That's why I like Lee. He doesn't make me think of Anthony Anderson.

Aaron Yo (Disturbia, Nick and Norah's infinite playlist).

I dont feel like Yoo looks old enough. Sure, he's like 30, but he doesnt look very old. He even played a teenager in "Disturbia".

I wouldn't be surprised if they changed Tom's character from being Alaskan to just an American if someone like Wilson was cast. Is it really important to keep him like that anyway?

I don't see the point of doing so, Doctor Jones.
It's nice to have diversity in the movie, and I can see a huge wave of people complaining about any changes to Tom's race. Especially from the Asian/Alaskan crowd.
Have you read "Secret Origins"? Tom reads like the Tom from the script, and he worked fine as a young good looking Alaskan dude.

Yeah, I'll agree with you there. I'm hoping to get SO tomorrow or something.

Keep him asian/inuit.

I think it's VERY important to keep Tom Asian/Alaskan. Despite his 'Pie Face' nickname, Tom Kalmaku was one of the first non-stereotypical Asian characters in the history of comics......That deserves to be noted and honored.

I submitted that screen test story to www.thinkmcflythink.com. Here is the link to the article, which gives you more info about the actor:

I'm gonna say go with Aaron Yoo... he seems like he can hold up with Ryan Reynolds.

The only thing that I've seen Aaron Yoo in was Friday the 13th, the movie was 'meh' but his performance was good, pretty funny. (Not that I'm saying that I want GL to be funny or anything) So, hey sure why not give Yoo a screen test.

I enjoyed that screen test quite a bit, and he seemed a good fit.
I would say whoever they cast needs to have really good chemistry with RR.
