No one here as figured anything out yet either, huh? I'm with Anita, the "clue" wasn't much of anything and got a bunch of people thinking this ARG was finally kicking off. I hope it starts up soon...

Some friends of mine were swearing up and down it was Edward Norton/Bruce Banner on the right and not Tony. It's amazing what people can see in an image. :wow:

Maybe I'll just wait for another "clue".

This really isn't getting near the Dark Knight viral level of response.. Seems fishy..
If you ask me I'd say the misspellings stick out a lot as something to look more into.
OR
Why hasn't anyone mentioned the blurry image over his right shoulder. (Looks like it could be a picture of Hammer) ..(if that's already been brought up and shot down please spare me)

I'm convinced the clue / game has something to do with the misspelled words. I think the image was released in a high quality, so fans would be able to read the article and spot these key words and letters. I'm not sure what "Secret" being highlighted means however.
I also find it interesting that the N and U are missing from Trauma and Substantial. Since there are already 2 Ns and 1 U in the anagram below, I'm thinking that the final message doesn't have the need for the extra N and U, but rather an added D and E.
Anagram solver: http://wordsmith.org/anagram/advanced.html
S-U-B-S-T-A-T-I-A-L
T-R-A-M-A
K-I-D-D-E-N-A-P-P-I-N-G
Letters in the Anagram - Appearances in paranthesis.
A(5)-B(1)-D(2)-E(1)-G(1)-I(3)-K(1)-L(1)-M(1)-N(2)-P(2)-R(1)-S(2)-T(3)-U(1) - 27 letters total.
Letters NOT in the Anagram:
C-F-H-J-O-Q-V-W-X-Y-Z
The following Iron Man related words can be found in the above anagram.
INDUSTRIES
MANDARIN
STARK
STANE
TEN RINGS
In an attempt to draw some conclusions, the following words are just words that can be made from the above letters, in alphabetical order.
AND
AT
BEAR
BIKE (BIKING)
BURN
BUS
GAME
GLAD
IF
KIDNAP (KIDNAPPING)
KING
LAP
LEARN (LEARNING)
MAD
MAKE (MAKING)
MARS
MEN
NAP (NAPPING)
PAIN
PAPA
PUP
PEN
RENT (RENTING)
RING
SAD
SLAP (SLAPPING)
SUBSTANTIAL
TEAM
TEN
TRAUMA
TURN (TURNING)
UP
1) To me, the arrow means nothing. A lot of commenters stated that it means Green Arrow or Hawkeye, but I think it's just a simple design put in the article.
2) The picture to the left is obviously not Bruce Banner, so I'm not sure why people are still on this idea. The picture to the left is very similar to the one posted by me on the last page with Stark simply being in his lab, and not a bar.
3) The writer and photographer of the article have Iron Man crew names, so I don't think they hold any clues either.
4) The Iron Man image on the left is simply that, an Iron Man image as seen in the Ivan Vanko lab image, and not War Machine.
Of course, I could be completely going in the wrong direction, but why spell 3 words wrong in 1 sentence?
Do you think it would help to assume that we should be looking for a web address? I think that would be a logical place for this clue to lead

Turtles
12-11-2009, 11:54 PM
SUBSTATIAL, TRAMA, KIDDENAPPING.
Three misspelled words.
The missing/added letters are N, U, D, and E.
What if the clue is not some complicated anagram? What if the missing/added letters are all we're supposed to find?
My first thought is also the most simple: what if the missing/added letters are supposed to correspond to their numbers in the alphabet?
N=14
U=21
D=4
E=5
Anybody notice those numbers (in any order) floating around any where? Are those numbers a secret password for the next stage of the game?
It seems too easy, I know, but you never know. Maybe it's supposed to be easy, since it is only the first clue.

So, the real secret is that there are articles written by Peter Parker, Lois Lane and Edward Brock hidden in the Whiplash poster, and we have to seek them out? They're right behind Dr Vanko.

according to C.Love (http://www.superherohype.com/news/ironmannews.php?id=8903&offset=475) there's two more letters we need to add to the list:
Here's all the mispellings:
T-missing from industries
i-missing from military
then of course the aforementioned N,U,D, & E
Together it spells united, untied, or dunite.

One thing I noticed, and I'm too lazy to go back and check is that they refer to the company as Stark Enterprises, not Stark Industries. The article also refers to Stark Headquarters. I typed these as a web address, but no luck. I even added "now" at the end like Stark Industries' site, nothing.

Seriously... with all these mistakes... I think they could have made them without realizing it. I mean... The art people that made them probably just created "legitimate" stories about Iron Man and Tony Start, somewhat what like how Zack Synder's team did for Watchmen... They made them... put them on Newspaper or whatever... then printed them out and used them as props...
Judging by the organization of these folks (no offensive if you are reading, but you just don't **** with fan boys and post something in August and give a crappy hint in December... come on now), they probably didn't care to spell check it... frankly because they didn't need to at the time...
At least... that is my hypothesis...

In the TDK ARG, they didn't spell "sergeant" correctly until like, a year into the game. :funny: I wouldn't look too hard into typos unless they were obviously pointed out. Like, with an arrow or note or something.

That is what I'm saying... it was interesting... but probably totally unintentional ...
BTW the Russian text: Железный человек? loosely translates into Iron Man? which means it is probably just a shot from the first fight...

So I may have found a few thing in the clue:
http://i45.tinypic.com/166dt6x.jpg
So I noticed that in the arrow, there are a few interesting things. For example:
- The word "Afghanistan" is cut in half by the arrow and now you see "Afghan". Next to it you see the word "mysterious", also in the arrow. This forms "Mysterious Afghan". Reference to The Mandarin perhaps?
- Also in the arrow they say that Tony "challenged natural disasters", but I don't recall anything like this happening in Iron Man. It also says that he was found "in Saudi Arabia", but it seems very unlikely that Tony walked from Afghanistan to Saudi Arabia. Now what do you get if you connect the 2? "Challenged natural disasters in Saudi Arabia". Again Mandarin maybe?
This is what I found for now. :D

They have already denied Mandarin. With the Russian appearing on these hints, I think it could be Titanium Man later on in the movie.

I really dont think there is an ARG in play here. I mean, TDK had a huge one with multiple sites, events, etc. Here we have a few pictures of the movie surface and those are supposed to give us something? Meh...

They have already denied Mandarin. With the Russian appearing on these hints, I think it could be Titanium Man later on in the movie.
Yes, but maybe he'll be like an after credits scene or like in the first movie, there could be a reference or 2 towards him, making clear that he's out there somewhere.

If so, it would have been nice for Paramount and SHH to tell us that, so we wouldn't be scrambling around with part 1.

It is definitely difficult to draw any conclusions from the little we have. My hope is that there are more "clues" that will be released. My guess is we will see several clippings with different highlighted words that reveal the message. I might be wrong, but that's the only thing I can guess with the info we have so far. Not much interaction, just, "Hey, here are some images with highlighted words, get pumped!" Lame as far as supposed viral clues go, but who knows, it may take off into something awesome.

Two things come to mind:
1) There's an ad/commercial for some shoe with that tagline currently.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/1876/hrironman2secret.jpg
In the DVD of Iron Man we see the Cap America shield in the background, and in Incredible Hulk we see the shield and body in an ice. So the "amazing captain" could have been found by Stark and his "Military Escort?"
And brought back to his HQ - possibly the S.H.I.E.L.D HQ? Cause we know about the whole Avengers Initiative so could Cap be discovered in the film or something?
Feel free to smack me upside my head if this seems far fetched but could it be hinting at the Inititative coming to life in the film to a certaine extent?

The link that you have on your website is not all the photos done by that guy for the washington post... When you search his name in google, you get over 600 results from him alone.... most of which weren't in the gallery... A lot of which having to deal with Mongolia... I'd bet that Eddins Jr. name is only in the paper to make it look more official. Same goes for "Getty Images" under the Stark image.
These clues need to be more obvious, or at least a little easier to spot, or at the very, very least, somebody needs to tell us how many "clues" there are.
I just want the real image... so I looked thru all of the photos... all 600 results...

Speaking of far fetched and following your train of thought.. What if we get a Captain America Cameo in Iron Man 2. I mean fully facial cameo. Granted he should be still in the ice and unconscious (if that is how you spell it) but that would be cool could be the last shot of the film or something. Don't know if by then we would know who is playing him. But if we don't it would be a real cool way of revealing him.

T (Industries) [misspelling]

Also, Stark Enterprises and Stark Headquarters are mentioned in the article, being interchanged with Stark Industries as someone pointed out and I forgot to include. I entered both into the url by themselves and with "now" at the end, but nothing came up.

ames (James Rothwell) [now I'm convinced it's nothing, and just them putting their names]
S (Sources) [there's a marking before the S]

TRAC or RAC (Contractor) [marked]
Walking on Air [might coincide with all the attention being on Tony or could be nothing, as the set up is like an actual front page. The question is, why include that and the picture at all? Man's head in the picture is missing, but could be nothing. Picture is from U.S. National Arboretum.]

"I KNOW STARKS SECRET!!!CONFESS YOU STOLE THE ARC REACTOR TEQ FROM MY DAD OR ILL KILL YOU LIKE I KILLED YOURE DAD IN 1991!!!!!!!"
Despite the misspellings, something in my gut says there's more to this than I'd like to admit. Would be a pretty strong motivation for someone to go after the Stark family and ties in pretty close to a central part of the mythos (the Arc Reactor). I haven't read any leaked scripts to confirm but any other thoughts?

With the hole Stark Enterprises thing in 2 of the 3 clues, I think we can be pretty certain that they will rename the company.
I'm thinking that as well, as Stark Industries is associated with weapons development.

Starks pop was involved with World War 2? Obviously Captain America was as well, and the Russian's were on our side in that war...so maybe Crimson Dynamo was on a team with them and got screwed over somehow???

Favs made the point of mentioning that Whiplash is the son of Crimson Dynamo. Okay, cool...well...what happened to Crimson Dynamo? Surely someone with powers had to defeat him...the answer must be Starks dad since thats what the issue is about...and likely Captain America as well since that is what amounts to the sequel to this film. Black Widow is Russian, so even their government wants in on the secret...
I dont see this "secret" as a blockbuster...unless it is revealed that Starks father was a super hero as well (The Vision????). If that were to happen (which I doubt) it would be a suprise, but a crappy one that would all but ruin the film for me.
Also, the secret could theoretically be more involved...possibly old man Stark stole the arc reactor technology from Dynamo (explaining why Whiplash knows how to make one)...but that the giant arc reactor was actually meant to cross dimensional borders...perhaps a giant hammer was retrieved and is hidden somewhere...BUT...that is WAY too much story to bother getting into when there's already so many characters and themes.
So, since the other options are stupid or too involved, I'm going with the idea that this will be a lame surprise...possibly revealing that Starks father turned evil and stole the arc reactor tech...which could lead a man to drink.

Could it be that Tony is looking for confirmation of whatever secret Ivan told Tony?! People have been saying that it is a hole, but look... there are cases in the floor opening...
heres something i found. Howard Stark was involved in the Manhattan Project and he also created robots called the Arsenal with a control unit code-named Mistress it was hidden in the mansion. The Arsenal robots also was supposed to be activated if the US was overrun during a presumed Cold War conflict. the Mistress had a persona and brain patters of Howard Stark wife Maria Stark.

Oh my...I just cant imagine them bringing in a subplot about a bunch of robots...there are already so many characters, and surely justin hammer will have something to keep War Machine busy...
I actually forgot that Justin Hammer is in the movie...man they have WAY too much going on here. They have to have some build toward Mandarin, some build toward Avengers, and tell a cohesive storyline with Hammer, Whiplash, Black Widow and War Machine added, AND a personal story with Pepper. What a mess.
I stand behind my theory that Stark's dad was involved with Captain America and Crimson Dynamo. The world they've created makes no sense if they aren't. There is some dark secret involved. The reason why its hard to guess is because it could be related to this movie, a sequel, Thor, Captain America or some other Avengers character.
Somehow, all of this has to tie together without adding too many extra parts. Perhaps Hammer created the Ten Rings for Mandarin? Old man Stark and Captain America put down the Whiplash's daddy. Will the Captain America movie tell this story? If so, does either Crimson Dynamo or old man Stark help the Nazis create the Red Skull??

Lets face it, Thor takes place in another realm, captain America takes place in the past...so this movie has to set up Iron man 3, Avengers, Captain America and possibly Thor...heck, maybe even dealing with Hulk loose ends...and at the same time work War Machine into the action, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Whiplash, Pepper Potts, Justin Hammer...and some back story with Starks dad...and again, thats NOT including the Mandarin! The movie isnt 4 hours long...so you're already looking at a cramped film. I'm sure it is the plot, or heavily involved in the plot, but if it needlessly involves Starks dad then that just east up time that could be spent developing characters, especially considering that all of these characters will have to fight for time to be developed.
If the secret affects this movie, for instance, Stark made the robots Hammer uses, then it is a waste of time and they should have had Hammer invent them himself.
If old man Starks secret impacts Captain America and Avengers, then the time spent is worth it.

What you typed sounds complicated, AND you gave one scene to develop each plot point. The movie is walking a tight rope between telling an involved story and telling an 80s action film style story with no character development.
Until proven wrong then I am convinced that Tonys dad, Whiplashs dad and Captain America all interacted in WW2. This tells me that Tonys dad was likely a bad guy...considering that the government deemed Captain America a failure and didnt care about saving him. This Legacy that is on Starks shoulders could lead him to join a team...could lead him to find captain America...could lead him to drink heavily due to guilt. It makes sense and can all fit together, where no other theory Ive heard does.

The Supersoldier program was considered a failure because...
. In the regular Universe, the man who created the Supersoldier Serum, Dr. Reinstein, was murdered by a Nazi spy. Since he kept all the secrets of the formula in his mind to protect it from spies, no one was able to perfectly mimic the formula.
. In the Ultimate Universe, every other test subject other than Steve Rogers died because their organisms wouldn't adapt to the Serum.
I find much easier to have one of these explanations than to make Tony's dad a villain.

Yes, but in the movies, the super soldier program is considered a failure BUT Captain America had already had adventures which will be shown in the movie.

Simple. It worked...but Captain America wouldnt do what he was asked to do...so they turned on him and deemed the project a failure.

Steve stops a bomb from reaching USA but falls into the ocean as a result of it. When he wakes up, everyone will be is enemy at the start, he's in the future, surrounded by people he doesn't know and new tech he will probably never understand. And in Iron Man 2, they're not villains at all, Stark was a military poster-child for more than half his life. He made them amazing, new weapons. And they're just mad he won't share his/the worlds greatest weapon for military use on the battlefield. Which is what he was going completely against. Whatever Tony's dad might have done to Ivan's dad, it doesn't seem to have nothing to do with the Supersoldier program. Tony accidentaly finds out about it while he's investigating his father's past. Ivan's dad is not a military scientist as far as we know. And you can't discart the possibility that Tony's dad didn't do nothing and Ivan's dad is just blaming him for his or a third person's acts.
And Tony's dad (Lets just call him "Howard" :hehe:) made Cap's shield, among other things.

I think Howard Stark is important right now because with his knowledge of everything SSS, there could be a new insight to a cure for Bruce Banner, the location of Captain America, closer for Stark hell, maybe The Avengers was even Starks idea and SHIELD has been around long enough...

It has nothing to do with us being dumb. They spoon fed us words in the easiest code to crack in history, and then didnt give us the last part of the website. That isnt clever or intriguing. Its just lazy.

Just had a form where I put in my name. I thought it would be a collective thing where more and more people had to sign up to launch the trailer, but to my surprise the countdown started as soon as i pushed submit.

So, superhero hype was involved in the viral campaign, and the administrator of the sites forum figured it out.
Lame.

Long story short: The viral campaign bombed. No one sat at their computer for hours typing in random urls until they found it...so one of the websites involved in the viral was told to go ahead and solve it and tell their readers...
Such an awesome viral campaign guys. The trailer looks awesome...but get it together.

Sigh... They still have 5 months... maybe they'll get something going and do something like the TDK did and give away tickets...

Maybe they will.
The thing is, I feel for them. There must always be a huge desire to run a viral, but iron man just doesnt lend itself to one. Batman is a detective, so it works out...horror movies that promote to internet dorks work by convincing people that it's real. Iron Man isn't mysterious or anything...it's just a great action/sci fi character. His rogues gallery isnt well known enough to base something around either.

Heh, usually a viral is solved by one person after many, many people see the clue. But yeah, it's usually a random player, not one of the messengers. :oldrazz:
And actually, some of the clues in TDK were solved by blind dumb luck as well (and one time we plain up cheated :funny: ), although we always had the information needed to solve it properly.
I've read a blog post that theorized that 42Entertainment, who was behind the TDK ARG, is behind this. They're not. They have a strict policy of not interacting with the players at all during a game. It's supposed to be an "alternate reality," not "here's some clues, have at it." Instead of recruiting websites to relay the jpegs, they would have put up the articles (with highlighting) up on a billboard or pasted around major cities. Not this.
Maybe they will.

TDK had the luxury of having the Joker, who can work underground to recruit minions, and it worked beautifully into the movie's storyline itself. I think that's the common thread among all ARGs - you need some kind of subversive, curious aspect of it that compels players to find out what's going on.
They've also simply made additional storylines for movies that don't have that subversive aspect. Star Trek's ARG involved characters not in the movie itself, Vulcans who got lost time traveling and ended up on Earth, and players tried to help them escape the Romulans and relay their message. They also went with extra characters in the A.I ARG, and that was one of the earliest pioneers of the medium.
Just because there's nothing in the movie's storyline to investigate, doesn't mean you can't have a good ARG.
