View Full Version : Will the green hornet bomb?
BATS N' HORNETS

So, The Spirit was a box office bomb. This film was released in 2,509 theaters on December 25, 2008. The gross for the opening four-days was $10.3 million, placing 9th in the box office ranking for the weekend.[29] As of May 2009, the film has grossed $19,806,188 domestically and $18,588,842 internationally for a worldwide total of $38,395,030.
THE BIG QUESTION IS: WILL THE GREEN HORNET DO MUCH BETTER?
DISCUSS! ! !

Tough question. Heros from The Green Hornets time like The Lone ranger, The Shadow, and The Phantom have all failed at the box office. Now this movie has a star near the level that Alec Baldwen was at during his time as the Shadow, but with Rogen having a failure with Zach and Mari doesn't mean he draws in the money.
We also don't know fully if this is an action movie or an action comedy. I say we don't really know enough to judge.

Because they aren't made very well. Now I love The Shadow and the Phantom, problem is compared to other movies at the time the studios gave them little backing. Kind of like Lionsgate did with The Spirit hoping the name of Frank Miller would carry the movie. The studios thought "Oh these characters are really old and should have a huge fan base we don't need to give it alot of time and money to be good like WB Batman."
You know if you don't give the movie alot of respect your not going to get any respect from the viewer. Sony gave Spider-man tons of money for ads and budget for the movie to make it good. Cannon when they had the rights would have made a cheap movie with little ads hopping to make a few bucks off the name alone. Just like their Masters of the Universe movie.

But if it's not a MEGA POPULAR NAME, it won't do well without A LOT OF MONEY THROWN AT IT...
You could practically not throw a penny towards a BATMAN film and it would still do well by HYPE alone.

Now I wouldn't say that. The Batman MotP movie didn't do well in theaters. Name only gets you so far.

I don't think it will do too well with or without a recession. Pineapple Express excepted, Seth Rogen isn't a box office draw, as evidenced by Observe & Report and Zack & Miri Make a Porno. Considering nobody will know what the hell the Green Hornet is, how can seeing the same old, same old actors Nic Cage and Cameron Diaz in the movie help anyone care?
I say The Green Hornet may go by The Spirit wayside. It may not end up as dumb a movie, but it doesn't mean paid patrons in the seats. I seriously will not care either way.

I wasn't interested in it after Stephen Chow left the production, until Michele Gondry jumped aboard. I honestly don't know what to expect from this movie in terms of quality, since it's been having tons of production problems with actors and directors seeming to come and go at the drop of a hat and I'm not very keen on Seth Rogen (he pretty much plays himself in all of his movies, and I'm curious if this one will be any different). I have no sentimental attachment to Green Hornet so I'd be lying if I said I cared what they do to it, but unfortunately I might not be the only one who is neither familiar or nostalgic about the franchise, which makes its commercial viability a bit questionable.

My only knowledge about The Green Hornet was that Bruce Lee played Kato in the television series. Other than that I think most moviegoers aren't familiar with the characters anyway. So will the upcoming movie bomb.(YES!!!) Because Rogen IS NOT an action star or a ladies man and Chou IS NOT a martial artist and can't replace Bruce Lee.

And for those not familiar with Bruce Lee's Kato they might remember Kato Kaelin from the O.J. trial.

Could this end up being an example of how so much built-in negative hype obscures the collective talent of the cast and crew involved, and that when it all comes together in a final product and more often than not 'clicks' on screen, that the perception of the film will dramatically boomerang in a positive direction?
Cause so many people don't have any hope for this movie being at all great if you follow a lot of film talk back sites. Most dismiss it out of hand and only some are open to seeing it but with all sorts of reservations.
Seems to me those kind of negative fan expectations are setting up a situation that is ripe for an unexpected turnaround of fan interest once some quality promo stuff is released. That's kind of what I'm hoping for at least.

There is something very ironic going on here: The Green Hornet TV series started up as a result of the success of the campy Batman series in the 60s. The difference was that GH wasn't campy, it was played straight. No Pows or Kabooms. The Batman franchise made a successful change from comedy (and gay iceskating) to serious drama with Batman Begins, and in the meantime Green Hornet comes back to life with... Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry?!? Funny how history repeats itself.

Depends what bomb in this case means? A bomb as in not making lots and lots of money? Or bomb meaning something unwatchable? I think it comes down to the rating. PG-13 or R. Im not sure it have to be R. If its something in the vein of "Men in black, or "Rush hour". Well, in that case...it could make some decent money. :P
On the other hand 2 movies that Seth said they were influenced by are Beverly Hills Cop & True Lies. 2 R-rated Action comedies. (that both made some bank)
The Shadow didnt make much money, but i think its GREAT. Not for everyone though.
The Phantom is a competent movie. 80% approval rate from me.
The only reason i dont give it 100% is that the Phantom character, or "Fantomen" as he is called here, underwent several major additions through the years in my country(Sweden). The majority of them were great!
Lee Falk approved of em and he visited Sweden several times to check out the comic writers and keep up with things.
Hell, we even have a "Phantomland"! (Fantomenland in swedish)
http://www.adlercreutz.se/Bilder/Blandat/Fantomen.jpg
Yeah, i know that looks a little hokey. But its for kids and just like that little guy i too visited that place as a kid. And was awestruck too. Fun stuff!
As any swede who grew up reading comics knows:
"Anyone who sees the Phantoms face will die a HORRIBLE death."
And they showed his friggin face in the movie!!!
Needless to say, i was a bit nervous when i watched THAT movie....
And the Scandinavian Phantom's costume is dark blue, not purple.
http://www.polisensim.com/hopp/images/fantomenDiving_72b.jpg
Huh, that picture i found of him diving was on the swedish police swim team site or something,, heh, appearantly the cops in sweden have a swimming contest called Fantomen Cup (the Phantom cup)
Well, i guess it means Fantomen is still pretty popular here :P :)
Anyway, everyone over here complained that they had changed his costume for the movie.
Even though they were pretty faithful, going with the original look. Pretty ironic.
Eh, went abit off topic there with the swedish Phantom.
Hm, yeah i guess the point was that they could either make something for the fans.
Or something that everyone could enjoy.
THE MASK would be what im trying to put the finger on i guess...
I remember reading this crazy comic when i was in school. It was really gory and over the top and....well...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/hophead420/TheMask2copy.jpg
flippin awesome!
Then i was really pissed when i heard rumours about a comedy being made...
But i (and pretty much everyone else) really liked the end result. So...I dont know.
The mask Production Budget: $23 million
Worldwide gross: $351,583,407
Normally i dont like changes and dumbing things down but seriously...
A Mask movie 100% faithful to the comic would have made VERY little money.
I think the mask change was for the better.
Of course they could still make a piece of crap that makes no money and no one is pleased. But, i somehow actually have a good feeling about this movie.
I cant explain it. Dunno. Call it a hunch.

The Shadow and The Phantom both failed at the box office, but both became cult classics. I don't see that happening with Hornet. You have a lot of great talent involved at a different time. Rogen's had a stream of successful movies, I think this will be another one to add to the mix. People will see this, whether they be fans or just casual or curious moviegoers.

it's so hard to say if it's gonna bomb or not. Most people don't know the problems the production went through. In fact, nobody really cares in the end if the product is good.
I say when the teaser hits, that will be the big indicator.

The Spirit bombed because it was directed by a talentless, cold-blooded hack who writes the same story every time. Even Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Mendes might have been more bearable with an actual director leading them.
Fortunately, Michel Gondry is a director who was able to keep Jim Carrey playing it straight for a whole movie (Eternal Sunshine), so I have faith in him and Seth.

why do you think that is, that heroes from The Green Hornets time like The Lone ranger, The Shadow, and The Phantom have all failed at the box office?
In the theater I saw "The Shadow' in, a close to full audience stood up when the lights came on and applauded. Good movie.
But on reflection:The opening hurt it a lot. Superman Stalks lois level hurt. Depicting Cranston as a murdersous thug, drug smuggler and warlord was a dumb idea. Too many obscure details from old Walter Gibson novels for the general public to deal with.
As to the others: The Lone Ranger fizzled on a number of counts. Pre release publicity about gtetting two other actors to voice the parts of The Ranger and Tonto certainly hurt it. The director seemed to think a thick Country and Western music association with the movie would make it hip in Urban cinemaplexes. It was done as a nostagic view of TV westerns instead of as an action movie.
How did it bomb? too many ways.
The Phantom was an okay film and had Catherine Zeta Jones in it. DOOMED by it's advertising plan.
Tried to sell it as the sort of thing 3 years color in with crayons.
Hornet advantage: the 60s TV show. Bruce Lee made it a martial arts show. There is a 10 minute long trailer http://www.scifiscoop.com/news/the-green-hornet-an-excellent-fan-film/ which shows the strengths and weaknesses of a martial arts movie approach.

Disagree. A dumb superhero plus a bad one trick pony actor equals a bad movie that will bomb. It's simple math.

Bomb of a movie? I don't think it will. Rogen pulls in the crowd. Most of the flicks he has been in made a nice amount at the Box Office, minus Zach & Miri. This is also a superhero flick, so as you know yourself, they pull in the money. Alot rides on the trailer also. So to come out and say ''Yep it will bomb'' or ''Nope it won't'' is a stupid statement at this point.

I agree with you 110%.However I do think the Green Hornet Character himself is an awesome character.I for one have been a big fan for years.
The Comics the old T.V. show etc. What turned me off was when I found out who was playing the part.I am a fan and I remember I said."I'm not going to waste my money on that piece of junk as a fan I'm freakin insulted".
As it was it had too much to compete with and the odds were against it from the start,
First:You have the 1960's fanbase:
http://www.mylifetime.com/files/imagecache/photo_gallery_featured/files/images/e-gall-greenhornet-tv-superheroes.jpg
The series was to be darker then the 1960's Batman series
Even though some episodes were still hokey it still had a dark brooding tone to it.
Second:You have Bruce Lee fanbase:
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:XlidtQ6Ct0R7KM:http://msnbcmedia1.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photo_StoryLevel/080521/080521-bruce-lee-vmed-1p.widec.jpg (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://msnbcmedia1.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photo_StoryLevel/080521/080521-bruce-lee-vmed-1p.widec.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24761930/wid/21370087&usg=__3b7II8DVORcb3GhJocrZKtQxaHs=&h=354&w=298&sz=13&hl=en&start=12&sig2=5WbFRHDcNe1AvrwTc6tvZA&um=1&tbnid=XlidtQ6Ct0R7KM:&tbnh=121&tbnw=102&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbruce%2Blee%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive %26sa%3DG%26um%3D1&ei=wf3JSszECI6ytwfazujiCA)
Now you have to replace Bruce Lee as Kato.
Trying to replace Lee in any venue is near impossible if at all possible and it's not.
Third you have a whole new fanbase of an even Darker brooding Green Hornet comic.
http://www.angryasianman.com/images/angry/greenhornet01.jpg
Green Hornet was supposed to be a dark brooding film even Darker then Batman.
And we get this .....?

You've made good points... but Hmarrs, as I said in my previous post... HOLLYWOOD IS DEVOID OF IDEAS...
As it stands, Rogen is trim and fit for the role. The car looks good, and the suits do more justice to the characters than many other popular comic book movies.
So (as a fan myself) I say this:
if we don't get Batman Begins PT 2, it will be fine AS LONG AS WE DON'T GET SPIDERMAN 3 or BATMAN & ROBIN!
