Greetings! My name is Melissa, though most people call me Mel, and my main online name is MadRhapsody-- sometimes with 17 added to the end. I have lived in San Diego, California all my life and I have seen many enjoyable events come and go. However, one that captured my attention in July 2008 was the San Diego Comic-Con. I was never into it before because I wasn't a comic fan, but the reason I got into the yearly Comic-Con was because of Tim Kring's Heroes. It wasn't until this year's Comic-Con where I was finally converted into a comic fan. Big thank you to Keyser Soze, Wiegabo, Twylight and Twylight's brother-- who have become like extended family to me-- for helping me understand why they're enjoyable and why I must become a fan.

Comic-Con 2009 was excellent and it has convinced all of us to make it a tradition to go every year. With all the excitement, my parents offered free lodging during Comic-Con week to my friends who come from near or far for this extravagant event. With the living room, two empty rooms and my bedroom (girls only! Or my boyfriend if he tags along), we can fit 10 people. You do not have to pay a penny for every night you sleep over. However, I do suggest bringing a sleeping bag, an air mattress, clothing, and groceries money. You know, the essentials.

Notice the lists have been modified! I thought Twylight's list making was a lot more refined than mine, so we're going with hers. Pretty simple and not that hard to follow. As time passes by, I will create two new lists: Cosplay and Non-Cosplay. In this year's Comic-Con, John cosplayed as Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and I cosplayed as Carol Ferris (formal wear). It was a lot of fun, and although my outfit was last-second, I'm glad I dolled myself up for it. For 2010, I am planning to cosplay as Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil 4). I heard that some people were already interested in cosplaying as well, so feel free to join in on the fun! Each year, thousands of people cosplay for Comic-Con, so you most certainly won't be alone. Whether we participate in the yearly Masquerade or not depends on all of you.

Any posts made here should contribute to Comic-Con 2010. To be added to a list, post here. To confirm cosplay or non-cosplay, post here. To report any news about 2010, post here. Please try to avoid getting too off-topic as it makes my life easier to have this organized. Thank you!

~Mel (MadRhapsody)

I might come and stay but I do not know what the best hotels are in the area. I am hesitating between the Ivy (but I think you need to be two) and the Solamar. I am also looking at the Marriot and the Westin (to a lesser degree).

If you have any suggestions, I would be happy to hear them.

The US Grant was the one I stayed in this year, and it was lovely. And in terms of location, it's a 7 block walk from the convention centre, which only takes about 10 minutes.

I get discounts from Merriot. Depending on where the hotel is located, could be as low as $45 a night. :woot:

One of my thoughts for next year is renting a cabin at the Chula Vista KOA Campground... it's like $100 a night and if you split it.. *does math* the -only- issue is the car parking once you get into Downtown San Diego, but it's only a 17 minute drive...

Shlee
08-05-2009, 09:18 PM
As I mentioned to twylight and wanted to mention to others:

If we all choose a hotel and get booked early (like, we book about 4-6 months in advance), I guarantee that we can find a great group discount.

I have ZERO problems sleeping co-ed. Seriously. None. So sharing rooms wouldn't be a big deal.

But if there's a Marriot close and JB gets a discount, and if we could get a group discount on top of that, it would be cheap as HELL, especially if we book early.

ALSO! I wanted to make us t-shirts for next year. Design them, print them out and all that stuff, and we could decide to wear them like Friday or Saturday. With the hype logo/URL on them and stuff, maybe individual flair (like character names or forum handles) on the backs of the shirts. Something like that.

If you're interested in that, hit me up so we can design the shirt together, and if you're interested in donating to the cause, I'll probably just charge everyone the base cost of the shirt if that. :)

Anyway, I'm for sure going, I'm already planning on it and going to be saving for it. I'm totally stoked. :D

If I do end up going, and that's a big if right now, I'm cool with splitting the bill for a hotel room with you guys.
It'd have to be a 2 or 3 bedroom suit though, since one of the rooms would be mine and mine alone.
So it'd more than likely have to be a Residence Inn, not a Courtyard.

Since I don't read comics anymore, I'd mainly be going to check out the movie and TV show panels. And pretty much going out and partying every night I'm there.
I'd need a room to myself since I would be trying to pick up some San Diego strange while I'm there.

As for how many you can fit, depends on who's up for sleeping on the floor. Really, you can fit a ****load in a 2 bed suite. Provided those in question have no qualms about "ruffing" it.

You sure it'd be cool with the hotel if we pack a 2 bedroom suite full of people? LOL. It would cut down costs, but I'm just worried about breaking hotel rules and/or getting kicked out. :P

As long as the floor isn't littered with sleeping humans, I don't see a problem. Eight to ten in a 2-bed suite should be fine.

Hit the nail on the head. As long as everyone isn't disturbing the other guests, they'd be cool with it.

Wow. Coming back from a trip to Tijuana, Mexico (which is basically half an hour away from where I live) and I find this thread's been packed with posts! It makes me happy to read that so many are determined-- or at least interested-- in coming to San Diego during Comic-Con 2010 week. :D

Somebody mentioned the Marriot Hotel? There is one in Downtown San Diego. (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/sandt-san-diego-marriott-hotel-and-marina/) I believe it's pretty close to the US Grant Hotel. Of course parking Downtown during Comic-Con sucks, so I would suggest parking cars either in Fashion Valley or Mission Valley. Both are pretty close via bus/trolley.

As Keyser said, the US Grant Hotel is another lovely choice. You can ask Twylight and Wiegebo about it; they'll reinforce how nice it is. If you'd like to check it out, start with the official website. (http://www.usgrant.net/) The earlier you book, the cheaper the prices, but that also means you have to have the money earlier.

For other San Diego Downtown Hotels, click here (http://san.diego.hotelguide.net/hl1dt.htm).

Again, if you have the means of transportation but nowhere to stay, you can always enjoy free lodging at my house during Comic-Con week. *Smile.* Ten people is a comfortable number. You just have to supply yourselves with air mattresses or sleeping bags just in case. Oh, and grocery money. Sometimes constantly buying food at restaurants gets expensive...

Feh. I am saving my pennies. Also, Johnny, I resent that "sleeping humans" comment, you filthy Homo sapiens.

As for sleeping arrangements, I'd probably want my own room, as I talk in my sleep and sleepwalk, which could be inconvienient to others. Case in point, when I first came to Denver to visit the school I'm now attending, my hotel room had two beds, one of which I went to sleep in, the other, I woke up in.

I'd want my own room, that is, unless you're all swell with sleep-raping. It's a rare condition, I know...but I have it. I just...walk around the room and hump everything that comes my way. That's the true story behind how I got my...thing stuck in that vacuum. :oldrazz:

I'm cool with rooming, I'm the kind of person who isn't all weird about just meeting with someone and sleeping in the same room. Though fat chance I will room with my brother or one of our friends anyways.

She looked that way the whole time she was walking down past the line. And plenty of pictures were being taken. It's almost like she's mad she's getting her picture taken so much.

You dressed as freaking slave Leia at the Comic-Con! What did you think would happen?!

In her defense, it sometimes gets really tiring to have your picture taken SO MUCH. It's fun at first, but it quickly becomes a matter of privacy and feeling like it's invaded. :P

I know it's what we cosplayers sign up for. But it's just one of those things. :P Picture taking becomes obligatory and we do it grudgingly. :P

I can't really give you a suggestion as to hotels... but pretty much all hotels in Downtown San Diego are pretty posh. US Grant, Marriot off the top of my head are nice...

What sort of things do you like? LA is chalked full of Museums; I'm a bit of a Muesum nerd so... ^_^' that's what you'll get from me.

I'd for sure suggest The Getty in LA, it's fantastic and gorgeous to boot.
La Brea Tar Pits if that stuff interests you, the Peterson Automotive Museum is fun. The LA Arboretum is pretty. You -have- to eat at two places for sure though, In-N-Out and The Hat. ;) Good old 50's California food.
Obviously, if you can make it out, go see the Hollywood stuff...Walk of Stars etc.. I don't know how far you want to wander but a drive up Highway 1 is always a nice scenic thing, the Santa Monica Pier and Seal Beach are pretty.
In San Diego.. the Wild Animal Park, the Zoo... OH and Balboa park is like right nearby the convention center area.

More Leia's! (and their Pimps)

Twylight, I like the way you make lists. I hope you don't mind me using them on the first post of this thread to keep better organization. You can even help me keep track of new updates!

Speaking of updates, I'm subscribed into the Comic-Con International News Feed and I check it everyday, so anything new and important that comes up (especially pre-registration), I'll let you all know immediately. Actually, there are a few things already up for SDCC'10!

2010 Exhibitor Application Package (http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_exhib_info.shtml)

2010 Artists' Alley Application Package (http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_artalley.php)

And yes, in San Diego, I am not only your friend, but I am also your tour guide. I've almost memorized the entire map for the San Diego Convention Center, so I can also be considered your map. You have to expect this from a San Diegan who has lived in the city since birth. <3

Fear not about having dinner together at least once. Keyser, Wieg, Twy, Twy's brother and myself had dinner at San Diego's House of Blues (http://www.houseofblues.com/venues/clubvenues/sandiego/) this past 24th of July. It was wonderful and we all had a good time. There are PLENTY of places to eat during Comic-Con, especially along the Gaslamp Quarter (http://www.gaslamp.org/). I'm more than certain we'll figure out dinner plans for at least one night with all of us to hang out. *Smile.*

Bit of advice for those unsure of how many days they'd like to go for Comic-Con? Know that there is A LOT of walking to do, but it is easier in the company of good friends. They keep you inspired to keep going. Without the crew this past Comic-Con, I wouldn't have gone all the way. Basically, go all four days. You will have no regrets about it. Besides, buying individual day passes tend to be annoying, especially since you'll always have to line up for registration and badge pick-up each new day before you're allowed in. Ask Wieg, Twy and Twy's brother about that. However, if you only want to go one or two days, Saturday is the best day, followed by Friday, Thursday, then Sunday last (though Sunday is for those who enjoy shopping-- discounts you can't get on the other days!).

When it comes to the official lists, I'd like to list everyone by their full usernames. Nicknames seem to be a bit complicated for me at the moment since I don't know you all very well yet. We have a year's worth of time to change that, of course. :)

Thanks but I actually grew up in LA so I already know it quite well. I do have family there so I will only be staying a day or so to see my grandmother.

Regarding hotels, I guess I will go with the one closest that has available rooms.

Anyway... onto the lists *'cause ya'll know I love lists* It's just a quick one! So let me know if there needs to be any modifications. I'll try to post this on the next page too >.>

As for your idea of a Hype dinner, we took it and we're running with it. Y'know, I've been thinking, it might not be such a good idea for me to go to ComicCon, since there's just so much crap involved with it that I'm just not interested in. I've got to weigh the cost of going against what I'm going to gain from it.

Shlee

1) You get to meet a bunch of people you've known online and spend a lot of quality time with them discussing the **** you have in common.

2) You get to go to panels for upcoming movies and things like that that you enjoy, see the stars of said movies or whatever speak and be in the same room with you, and learn a lot of behind the scenes stuff, including the chance to ask your own questions of them.

3) There is a metric f**kton of merch at something like ComicCon. Be it comic merch, game, toy, whatever merch. There's a ton. And a lot of exclusives.

4) LOTS of companies buy exhibition booths, there's probably an art hall (at comic con, I'm not 100% positive as I've never been, but even my fairly small local anime convention has an artist's alley), even non-comic companies do. I know for a fact that NCSoft had Aion on computers and were letting people play the game (lucky a**holes too, since that weekend wasn't a beta test weekend for the rest of us!).

5) It's GEEKY. Plus it's in freakin' California. There's a beach not far away, San Diego is beautiful! I'd love to take a side trip to the zoo, and I know twy and I were thinking of doing a bonfire/barbecue on the beach on Sunday evening or something, because a trip to California isn't complete till you spend time on the beach, even if you don't swim.

6) More reasons to come later. These are off the top of my head. And I guarantee that the other guys can give you reasons to come as well. The pros HARDCORE outweigh the cons. It's a freakin' vacation. It's fun. There's people you'll meet that like the same stuff you do. It's exciting, plus you can point and laugh at all the cosplayers (even though I'll be one).

1) You get to meet a bunch of people you've known online and spend a lot of quality time with them discussing the **** you have in common.

This is a pro. I want to meet you guys and hang out.

2) You get to go to panels for upcoming movies and things like that that you enjoy, see the stars of said movies or whatever speak and be in the same room with you, and learn a lot of behind the scenes stuff, including the chance to ask your own questions of them.

This is a "meh". I don't usually care much for the making of movies, and probably won't attend any of the panels.

3) There is a metric f**kton of merch at something like ComicCon. Be it comic merch, game, toy, whatever merch. There's a ton. And a lot of exclusives.

This is part-pro, part-con. I'll probably buy a few things, but (with my experience at other cons) too much of the metric f**kton will be anime/mange junk that I couldn't care less about. At least it'll save me money.

This is another "meh". The likelihood of there being anything I'd want to see in these booths is middling to slim, and I'd bet that the lines would deter me from them.

That's what made me question going. I've been to cons before, and just walked around being bored as hell, only the last few times all it cost me was admission and a ride on the subway.

The zoo is a pro. The rest are "meh" to con. I loathe the beach.

Sorry to be all negative, but I know how I am, and it's questionable on whether I'm going to have fun.

Shlee

That's because you're a downer.

You realize this is COMIC con... not ANIME con? Right? Because no, it won't be a ton of anime/manga merch. It's going to be COMIC merch. :P

I dunno if you saw twy's list of panels she was thinking about going to just on the days she went, but the list was extensive and amazing. And she'd whittled through the list just to find the ones she wanted to do.

There's SO MUCH to do. And again. It's San Diego. There's a ton to do. :P You're such a defeatist/pessimist. :P

If you want an idea of how much there is to do (and that doesn't include the stuff to see/buy on the exhibit floor), just check out this year's panel schedules.

http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci09_prog_thu.php
http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci09_prog_fri.php
http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci09_prog_sat.php
http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci09_prog_sun.php

And while Sunday may not have as much stuff, everything on the floor is discounted to sell. And, really, look at all that stuff. It's almost a certainty that at any given time of any day there's at least one or two things worth seeing. On my schedule, I often had backups of backups of backups. At one time on Saturday, there were 5 different things I wanted to see in case any line was too long.

Also, for everyone who goes all four days, it's actually five days since we also get to go Wednesday night. (I heard they were cutting back Wednesday, but I also heard they were making it bigger.)

If there is one flaw with the Con, it's waiting in line. For some of the stuff I went to, the line may have been long, but the wait wasn't bad, and I still got in. Other stuff, either prepare to go really early and wait, or (since they don't clear out rooms between panels) try and find stuff in the same room so you can just keep getting better seats.

And, while this year's big thing was obviously Iron Man, next year will be panels for Thor, Captain America, and Green Lantern. And if Kevin Smith is there again, he is a must see!

SuperFerret
08-08-2009, 08:01 PM
I've been to COMIC cons before and there's still a ton of anime junk there, and yes, I saw twy's extensive list of panels and didn't think any sounded remotely interesting. I'd like to go, and to meet everybody, but that's a lot of time and money that I can't spare on something I'm not 100% gung-ho about.

Either way, the dates the Con is on are still my biggest worry. I could take a few days off of school with no problem, but if the Con falls on a test day or the first day of classes, I've got to put school first.

You know what I was just thinking? Since we've got almost an entire year to plan for the Con, and we all want to have our best sexy on when wearing our costumes...what if we had our own little basement-only fitness thread?

Those of us who need to get into fighting form for costumes, or who just want to tone a up a bit, can use it to keep each other motivated, keep track of our goals, brag about how good we're doing, compete with other basement dwellers (dick measuring contests), or just get prepared to stand in line for a few hours while carrying a heavy bag waiting for the Green Lantern movie panel (stares at Keyser).

It'll just be a nice place to hang out and keep each other motivated, since we all know it's easier to stick to the plan when you have people hounding motivating you. (First motivation guys, the more weight you lose, the bigger you dick looks.) We can share tips and ideas. I am confirmed. I have my pass, plane ticket and have reserved at least 1 one hotel room which I hope to change.

By the way, if I do change, it would open up a room at the Marriott which I had to pay in advance. I would obviously be willing to pass it on to someone else.

No idea about hotel+airline deals.

And prices vary greatly depending on how close you get. So it might be worth it getting a hotel farther away and finding a good airline+hotel+rental car deal.

Doing a quick look, one hotel next to the even is going for about $180+ a night (but it's literally next door and on the water). But I didn't go through any of the special deal sites liek Cheapticket, Expedia, Travelociy, or whatever.

Now if I do get the room I want, I will offer up my room at the Marriot which I already paid for at a big discount. It is a deluxe room on the concierge level.

Currently only Thursday and Sunday are available. You won't be able to buy tickets from anyone who already has them because you have to show a valid id as proof of purchase when you get there. Do you think it is even worth it to go on Thursday and Sunday? I live about fourty-five minutes away so I don't need a hotel or anything. But from my previous knowledge I know there is not a lot going on those days, so idk if it would be worth it.

And I know that last year Comic-Con actually put up tickets on their eBay account near the actual date of Comic-Con 2009. They sold out in minutes a day lol.

Since you live so close, it's probably at least worth going Thursday. That way you can get a feel for what it's like. I know I wish I had gone Thursday last time because I missed great panels like Psych, Burn Notice, and Doctor Who.

If you want to get good deals on stuff to buy, then Sunday is good too. I think the panels only run half a day, and the booths try to clear out their inventory by slashing prices.

It's a pretty good deal if you can get it. You work the Con for a few hours each day, then you get to attend the rest of the day for free. I think you work out a schedule so you get to see the things you want to see the most. MadRhapsody is doing it this year, she could give you the details.

You can still buy for Thursday and Sunday. Although Thursday looks just about gone.

I understand. I wouldn't either if I could not get the 4 days. However, it would be nice if the maximum of hypesters came.

I have two of them; both in the headquarter hotels.

And I am offering one of the room to the hypesters here.

My posse (all of two people) and I are booked at the T&C, for now. Sadly even putting in a list of 12 right -at- 9:00 did nothing for our chances. We got one that wasn't even on our list... gooo figure.

Not the happiest with it, but it's cheap and grants us enough money for taxi's on the late nights.

We're getting in Weds afternoon, and leaving Sunday afternoon. Sooo if anyone is up for dinner before/after preview night (not sure on the times for that yet) let me know.

I'm in for dinner anytime. What other chance do we all have to hang out. :)

The T&C is where I was picking up the bus at the mall. An all day pass was only 5 bucks, so that'll save you cab/parking in the morning. And since Keyser's still in the same place (essentially) you'll be able to meet up with him at that same spot.

I'm getting in tuesday night and leaving monday morning.

My recommendation would be dinner AFTER Preview Night.

Last year, MadRhapsody and I were queueing in the Convention Centre from the early afternoon. A massive wait to get your 4-day pass and eventually get into the main hall for Preview Night. I'm still hoping against hope that The Walking Dead pilot will be ready to screen at Preview Night this year, so I'm wanting to go.

So my recommendation for the folks arriving Wednesday would be to head straight for the Convention Centre. Depending what time in the afternoon you guys are arriving, I could meet you and walk down to the place with you, and we can queue together. Then all go for dinner afterwards. :)

What do you mean what days? Confused.

2 of my friends are VIP or something because they are artists for the Con or something and the other I think he had to buy each day pass individually or something. I have 4-day pass w/o Preview Night.

We are arriving Wednesday late morning/early afternoon and leaving Sunday evening.

Looks like the Comic-Con iPhone app has been updated again. Now it actually takes you to the Con webpages inside the app.

Hopefully they'll include some kind of method to setup schedules. For Wondercon they have a section showing each session per day, which is nice. But it would be nice to carry around a schedule (with alternatives) on my phone instead of a piece of paper.

I totally agree with you. My guess is we will get a further update once they put the schedule in place.

Just to let everyone know, I got tickets a couple nights ago! Randomly they had more, even though they never announced it. They probably had around 50-100 more, but they were gone within the first couple of hours. I guess word spread quick. Anyways, I got my legit 4 day pass/preview night for 100 bucks and will be there!!!

Does anyone know what parking is like down in San Diego? I have the option of staying in a nice hotel about 20 minutes away from the Con for free, but we would have to pay for parking each of the four days.

From what I could see, it does not look good and it seems more advisable to take a shuttle in from your hotel.
