...never seen any of those...

Never seen Monster Squad!?!?!?!? Think the Goonies meets the Universal Monsters.

I also have no idea how you have never seen Cujo it was adapted from a Stephen King novel and it is probably one of the better Stephen King movies.

Frailty is also a very good movie that probably fell off a lot of peoples radar. It was also Bill Paxtons director debut as well I believe.

I heard Angel Heart was good but I have never seen that one.

3:10 to Yuma looks stunning and sounds amazing. You'll be pleased.

Excellent, thanks, only paid £10 for it, and I thought the scenery, etc would look amazing, cant wait to watch it now.

That explains it, 24fps only works with 1080p displays that accept the 24fps feature.

Ah yes, my TV can only put out 1080i, so that does explain it, was getting worried there! Thanks for the info.

HA! NICE!

'Deadlands 2: Trapped' on… HD-DVD??!!
September 4, 2009

You heard that correctly. Anthem Films is bringing Gary Ugarek's indie zombie film to the defunct format in a limited edition.

'Deadlands 2: Trapped' will be released on HD-DVD on October 27. What makes the release special is that it will come with a numbered certificate of authenticity and will be limited to 500 copies.

This not only makes the release the last title to make its way to the deceased format, but will also make it a highly sought-after collectible.
Gary Ugarek has this to say about his release:

“Over the last 18 months, since HD DVD’s demise, I and a small group of HD DVD enthusiasts have scoured every part of the planet trying to obtain the left over releases of HD DVD material. We were early adopters of the format and still feel to this day the format shouldn’t have been left to die off. So I set out to do some research and realized the following:

During HD DVD’s release, over 1,000,000 player units were sold and over 800 titles were released for the format. At the end of its tenure the market penetration still remained strong, and the format built a dedicated fan base."

"So I set out to see if these HD DVD owners would be interested in a brand new release. I presented all the information about the film, gave them access and links to trailers, the press kit and the technical aspects… and you know what… THEY LOVED THE IDEA. The feedback was unbelievable.

Within 36 hours of putting the question out there, I received over 200+ emails, within 96 hours 380+ requests from HD DVD fans asking me to make this happen."

"I presented the idea to Anthem Pictures, the distributor, and they liked it, and immediately jumped behind it.”

“Some people thought I was flat out nuts and were asking, why HD DVD? Are you not a Blu-Ray supporter? I answered I am, but when you have a dedicated fan base for a format, like HD-DVD does, and you see the passion of its supporters I immediately knew I wanted to do this for the fans. I want to give them something special.”

“I had been asked by the fans to include something about how I made a micro/low budget zombie film, and what my experiences were, what hoops and hurdles I had to overcome, and I though sure, why not.”

“I know it’s a gamble with HD DVD having lost out on the format war, but based on feedback from HD DVD fans we expect this to be a huge moment for them, the film and HD DVD. Kind of ironic that a zombie film would be helping HD DVD try to come back from the dead, even if for a short period of time, but who knows, if the program is a success maybe other indie filmmakers and distributors can do something similar for the HD DVD fans and keep it alive for the hard core.”

Specs are still unknown for the HD-DVD, but supplements include both the Unrated & Original Work Print versions, director's commentary, work print commentary, featurette on indie filmmaking from the director's POV, featurette on the theatre cineplex location, and more!

Most of the supplements will be exclusive to the HD-DVD version as well.
Suggested price for the HD-DVD has been set at $29.95 plus shipping and handling.Source (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Anthem_Films/Disc_Announcements/Deadlands_2:_Trapped_on%E2%80%A6_HD-DVD%21%21/3382)

Oh great HD-DVD is being used as a marketing gimmick now. Just a way to try and make more money off a movie that probably isn't expected to sell very well. And even the small amount of money it would generate it seems pointless. 500 copies?? Really?? Lol.

What a stupid comment. Early adopters are always screwed over and should expect it. That's why I waited until there was one format before I went into blu-ray.

Considering the HD DVD was top tier as far as PQ was concerned, I think it's safe to say the Blu-ray is the same.

Plus, it got a 4.5 out of 5 for PQ at Blu-ray.com

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=1140&show=review

Hulk bursts onto Blu-ray with a stunning 1080p, 1.85:1-framed transfer. Please note that the packaging erroneously reports the film's aspect ratio as 2.35:1. Glossy and bright, nearly every frame features an abundance of bright colors that translate very well to Blu-ray. Close-frame detail is superb throughout the movie. Human faces reveal every pore and line; Nick Nolte's and Sam Elliott's thick facial hair stand out clearly and distinctly in every frame. Viewers will also be privy to every splotch of ink and ridge on paper or the textures of a straw hat worn by a character early in the film. The film is colorful without being overblown. No one color is emphasized over any other, which comes as somewhat of a surprise. In this kind of film, one might expect green to be prominent in every frame, but it's not. In fact, the color is not to be seen in abundance at all in many sequences. Ang Lee instead chose to move away from this distinctive look, one employed by the filmmakers of Daredevil (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=1011), for example, who chose to add many red highlights to the film. Depth is fine and the image often exhibits that desired "popping" effect, the result of crisp imagery, solid use of color, and excellent detail and clarity. Black levels are true and deep, with a good deal of shadow detail. Some of the later scenes in the film in the abandoned military housing area look pale and slightly washed out, likely a result of the bright desert sky and nearly monochromatic desert floor. Detail remains strong nevertheless. The cracks in the desert floor, the abandoned buildings, and various, aged objects scattered outside have a realistic look about them. The print does exhibits the occasional black speckle. Hulk is another fine transfer from Universal.

 King Kong only looking slightly better than the DVD? Are your settings on your TV set alright? I notice a huge difference from the DVD to the Blu-ray on King Kong. Kong is one of the best looking disc out there. Most everything released from Universal on Blu-ray is top tier.

King Kong finally makes its way to Blu-ray featuring a VC-1 encoded 1080p transfer in the film’s original aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as the transfer is phenomenal. The film features a rich color palette that is both vibrant and slick during the film’s New York scenes, while retaining a nice earthy tone during scenes taking place on Skull Island. The entire film displays a wonderful sense of depth that often will often leave viewers slackjawed in amazement. The film is a true sight to behold on Blu-ray and easily ranks among the best transfers the format has seen.

Contrast is exceptionally rendered with deep and accurate black levels and whites that never bloom. Detail is also extraordinary; the film just overflows with skin, fabric and landscape textures that add tremendous weight to this exemplary transfer. I was equally impressed with the lifelike nature of the image. The whole film just feels alive. King Kong has been an eagerly anticipated title on Blu- ray. It’s gratifying to see Universal bestow such a phenomenal transfer on the film. King Kong is a reference quality transfer that will be used as demo material for years to come. Highly recommended!

Hulk and King Kong are the cream of the crop when it comes to Blu-ray discs so I have no idea why neither of those wouldn't look good to you. It isn't really a far comparison because it is playing in full motion on your HDTV but if you look at this screenshot you should easily be able to tell the difference between the HD version of the DVD version.

Lol. No, no offense taken.

I've had this conversation with others and myself a lot. It's ironic that I feel like I've seen soooo many movies, but I've NOT seen a lot of the "classics".

I hear people saying "oh, you like movies? Well what did you think of so-and-so?", and a lot of the time I respond with "...well I actually have never seen that". "WHAT?!?!"

:p

I actually made it a point about a year or two ago to finally get around to watching some of those "Must-See" movies that everyone's always talking about. So I finally watched "Scarface", "The Green Mile", "Shawshank Redemption", "Die Hard", "The Fifth Element", and one or two others, I think. I'm currently Netflixing "Castaway", but I've had that for a few months now and haven't watched it yet. lol

Just watch: any of you on this thread make a list of your Top 10 Must See Movies, and I'm willing to bet I haven't seen a lot of them.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it really wasn't until the HD DVD/Blu-ray format war that I really started getting into movies. We didn't go to the theater a lot when I was little, barely ever bought any movies, etc. But suddenly paying attention to the movies since the format war, I can see people's Most Wanted lists, and I see how excited people are when certain titles are announced...it's really opened my eyes to a lot of movie's I'd have never tried until now.

They are making a European model for late '09 or early '10. Maybe I'll wait for just a little while.

Seems like WB is really ashamed of owning the rights to Catwoman. They didn't put the title of the movie on the spine of the Blu-ray. Guess they knew people would be ashamed to have it in their collections for people to see.

Delay for Lord of the Rings Blu-ray Confirmed
Two days ago we broke the news, and now it is confirmed: the Blu-ray release of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy' is delayed to 2010. Studio and industry sources have informed our friends at The Digital Bits that the BD trilogy is no longer on the 2009 schedule, and is now tentatively slated for early 2010 (probably March).

No official confirmation of the delay is to be expected, as the title was never officially announced in the first place.

No official reason for the delay was given either, although The Bits believes that Warner Home Video "didn't want Rings to get lost in the crowd", considering that the studio "already has a number of big 3rd and 4th quarter titles coming on Blu-ray this year" (such as 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Gone with the Wind' and 'North by Northwest'). 'Lord of the Rings' fans are already replying that it is likelier that those classic movies would be the ones to get lost in the crowd if released at the same time as the Tolkien trilogy filmed by Peter Jackson.

There is no information as to whether the delay will entail any change in release details, or whether the studio will use the additional months to include the extended versions of the movies in the Blu-ray release, as demanded by numerous enthusiasts here and elsewhere.

Terminator Salvation Blu-ray Announced for December
Warner Home Video has announced that it will release 'Terminator Salvation' on Blu-ray on December 1, day-and-date with the DVD. As we told you in August, both the theatrical, PG-13 cut and the director's R-rated cut will be included (not via seamless branching, but on separate discs). A digital copy of the theatrical version will also be included.

Special features are as follows:

Disc 1 (theatrical version):
* WB Maximum Movie Mode
* Focus Points
* Re-Forging the Future
* The Moto-Terminator

Disc 2 (director's cut):
* BD-Live
* Media Center
* Featured Content
o "Resist or Be Terminated” Video Archive
o Terminator Salvation Official Movie Prequel Digital Comic Issue #1
* My Commentary
* Live Community Screening

Well while I am not saying it is highly likely I think it might make business sense considering all the complaints there has been. Most people have the opinion that they will not buy the theatrical versions and wait for the extended versions. But honestly I cannot figure out what WB is doing half the time when it comes to their Blu-ray releases. They constantly have technical errors, cheap out on the audio, only release giftset editions of movies, etc. They are definitely half-assed, greedy, or just plain confused take your pick.

I plan to upgrade eventually to Blu Ray, just been waiting for the price to go down on the players.

I have a question. What is the difference between a player that has 1080p Output and 1080p Upconversion?

Upconversion will bring a DVD from 480p to 1080p, which is a marked improvement, but no where on the scale of Blu-Ray. So even if a player is outputting 1080p, it's not necessarily an HD movie player

Well if you are looking for a great player right now for the best price I would say the Slim PS3 for $299.99 is the best bang for your buck. You will more than likely be able to pick up a $100 Blu-ray player this holiday season but it won't offer nearly as much as the PS3 can.

1080p upconversion is something all Blu-ray players are capable of. It just upconverts your DVD's to the best quality you can get out of them...but...it will never look as good as an actual 1080p Blu-ray. You can only make a movie look so good that is using less than 10GB's of space.

WB most likely doesn't care about the complaints. They know that they can milk this franchise like Lucas milks Star Wars. Your average movie watcher would most likely pick up the theatrical cuts of the movie and those who complain will most likely buy it as well. Then, when the extended cuts come out, they can coincide it with The Hobbit and sell even more copies of the same movie. WB sees the green. lol.

Thanks for the replys BatMatt and RedIsNotBlue!

So if someone got a player that was just 1080p Output, does that mean it won't slightly improve your regular DVD's like a player that was 1080p Upconversion, or do they both do that?

I just want to make sure I buy the right type. Only problem I have right now is that my flatscreen HD TV is old and is only 1080i, so I need to buy a new TV before I convert to Blu Ray, just so I get the maximum quality out of it.

Also RedIsNotBlue, I would have bought the PS3 but I've kind of fallen out of hardcore gaming and only want to play a few select games coming out, my sister has a PS3 so I just borrow hers. I think I'm just going to get an actual player, even if it is a bit more expensive.

Well WB saw the complaints/boycott threats for a movie like Blow not getting lossless audio. Once they saw how many people were saying they weren't going to buy it because of the lack of lossless audio they gave it lossless audio. But there have been other movies that received this same threat yet they still only gave it Dolby Digital which is why I said I can't figure out what exactly is going on with WB's "strategy".

If you are getting a Blu-ray player then it will upconvert DVD's it is a standard.

Well even if you have a 1080i HDTV you will still see a huge upgrade when watching a Blu-ray. You could buy a player now and be satisfied until you upgrade your HDTV.

Also RedIsNotBlue, I would have bought the PS3 but I've kind of fallen out of hardcore gaming and only want to play a few select games coming out, my sister has a PS3 so I just borrow hers. I think I'm just going to get an actual player, even if it is a bit more expensive.

Well I wasn't just talking about its ability to play PS3 games but the PS3 is just an amazing all around multimedia device. 120GB's of free space, web browser, wifi, able to store music pictures videos, ability to download demos for free, ability to rent or buy movies over the internet, etc. It is also arguably the best Blu-ray player on the market.

But if really all you care about is watching the actual movies themselves then you should be fine with a cheaper player just gotta read reviews and keep your eyes on prices. From time to time if I see a good player deal I post it in this thread so just keep your eye out. :)

Thanks again!

Just watching Batman Begins(which I heard doesn't have as good of a transfer as it should have gotten)on a PS3 on my 1080i HD TV I noticed a fairly good difference from the standard DVD. So I just might get a player in the near future and worry about the TV later on.

Batman Begins on Blu-ray looks really good and sounds even better but I wouldn't list it as demo material. If you really want to see some amazing Blu-ray's I would say check out The Dark Knight, Superbad, Shoot Em Up, Rescue Dawn, Hulk, Transformers, Wanted, Stranger Than Fiction, Sin City, The Hellboy movies. Those are just some off the top of my head that I have in my collection that I think look visually stunning.

I have a 1080i TV and I can definitely see an improvement over standard DVD with the blu-ray. Even standard DVDs look better.

Eventually I'd like to replace it with a higher definition, but for now this is fine, I'm happy with the better quality picture I'm getting now.

And they couldn't have missed the complaints on the Amazon.com order page. The box set had a whopping 1-1/2 stars and it was filled with complaints that it wasn't the extended version. Maybe they realize that the ones buying blu-ray are the ones who would rather have the extended editions.

I can't really tell what's going on - they never officially announced it to begin with, and do they really think it's going to get lost in shuffle with the Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz releases? I would think it's the other way around.

I'm still willing to bet we get the regular editions first, and the extended versions when they're able to give us some sort of tease for The Hobbit.

I never bought the theatrical versions on regular DVD because I went straight to the ended, so I was actually willing to get this release. It looks incredible just from the trailer.

Yeah I started out with a 40 inch 1080p HDTV, then moved onto a 52 inch 1080p HDTV, and now I have a 1080p projector with a 92 inch screen...lol. I can definitely say the bigger the better. :)

But next year they plan to launch 3D HDTV's and that is going to certainly be interesting to see how the works out.

Yes but it all depends on how the studio handles the transfer. Some Blu-ray's only look marginally better while others blow the DVD versions away. You can get a PS3 but you would have to get an HDTV to even get the upgrade in quality.

Now that I think about it, that's pretty much it. Blu-ray buyers tend to want the best version and nothing else.

Sony Announces Blu-ray Player with Netflix and YouTube Support
Sony has announced its "networked" Blu-ray player, number BDP-N460. This BD-Live model streams video from the Bravia Internet Video platform instantly, including content from YouTube, Slacker, and Netflix (support for Netflix access will be added later this fall). It will be available in October for about $250.

Well yeah but very expensive with limited content. Kind of like how Blu-ray started. As far as I know with current players and Blu-ray discs it would look the same as on any HDTV. So it could be they probably would have to re-release movies. It is a very confusing situation and has a good chance of failing considering how many people just bought an HDTV or Blu-ray player within the last year or 2. I really don't know TOO much about really so can't comment much. I just know the studios see 3D technology as a possible future. But like I said just because it debuts next year really doesn't mean much considering it will be expensive as hell with limited content so even if it does become mainstream it won't be at least for another couple of years.

So I just bought a 46 inch LED Samsung HDTV. OH MY GOD. I tested with The Dark Knight. I thought it great on my past 32 inch Samsung LCD HDTV, but the difference between 1080i and 1080p and having 120 Hz is incredible. I have never seen a BD pop so much! It was practically 3D. I raided Best Buy at lunchtime today and picked up:

Wolverine
The Dark Knight
Dirty Dancing

They were all on sale and I had a $5 reward zone certificate, so it was a good deal!

I now have a whopping 9 blu-rays in my collection. :oldrazz:

Well if you are waiting for an amazing deal you are best to hold off for the holiday season when the best deals come around. But if you are looking for a cheap Blu-ray player right now there is plenty on Amazon.com right now for less than $200.

I'll hold off until the holidays. I would rather pay a bit more and get a quality player that would last longer than a cheap brand.

Well just because a player is cheap doesn't mean it sucks. There is a company Goldmund that just announced a $135,000 Blu-ray player (Yes you read that right) and it doesn't even connect to the internet...lol. You would probably benefit greatly if you just do some research and figure out what features on a player would be important to you and which ones aren't. Just read reviews and find out what you are looking to get out of a player. Feel free to drop by here anytime with questions and I will do my best to help you out.

Well here's an easy question although probably a bit dumb as well.

All Blu-Ray players do in fact come with Component/Monster cables correct?

I'm sure they do because I doubt regular cables would be able to pump out the quality picture and sound that Blu-Ray offers.

It sucks when I had to borrow my sister's PS3 to watch BB and TDK on Blu-Ray and it has regular cables. Made that damn whirring sound the entire time, coming from the TV not the system. :(

Christ.

Are HDMI cables different than component cables or the same thing essentially? If they're different I need to figure out if my current TV can use them.

BatMatt

Well yes they're different, if you have an HDTV you most likely have the right ports unless it was was one of the originals

Well yes they're different, if you have an HDTV you most likely have the right ports unless it was was one of the originals

My TV is HD but 1080i, I've had it for roughly 3-5 years.

All I know is I have multiple ports for Component cables in the back. Blue, green and red colored just for picture, then there are the two slots for stereo sound.

BatMatt
09-15-2009, 06:48 PM
well that's capable of accepting a 1080i signal as well

RedIsNotBlue
09-15-2009, 07:01 PM
Yes Figs the blue, green, and red component cables are able to give you a 1080i picture. If you plan to upgrade your HDTV to a bigger size and 1080p picture then you will need an HDMI cable to do that. But thats not a real issue since those can be found pretty cheap for $10 or less. HDMI cables are the only way to get lossless audio as well I believe but that is a whole different can of worms you will need a lossless capable surround sound to even worry about that. Don't go in a store and fall for those overpriced HDMI cables. They do the same exact thing as the cheaper cables.

But the bottom line is that if you have a 1080i HDTV then you should be perfectly fine with the red, green, and blue component cables.

I'm not aware of any Blu-ray players that come with either component/HDMI. Most just come with those cheap Yellow/Red/White, Yellow being for video and the red/white being for sound. So, you'd have to buy the component/HDMI cables separately. Monoprice.com is a great place to do that.

I have over 500 DVD's and 58 Blu-Rays and not one has ever not played right out of the box. The only issue I ever had was when I bought the special edition of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It had 2 specials features discs and not the movie. Took it back to Wal-Mart and we opened like 10 of them in the store and they were all like that.

Yep, most companies are cheap when it comes to wires they include with their players. It's like, they don't want to pay one extra cent to get the proper cables for the player. :whatever: I can't really comprehend why they do that but they must have some sort of deal with cable makers so that Monster and Belkin don't lose business from the masses that don't know any better.

It may not actually be a problem with your DVD's and/or Blu-ray's. HDMI is pretty much a work in progress and sometimes there can be connection issues with syncing and whatnot. Like, my family has a 1080i projection style TV and every now and then there is a syncing issue that causes problems like you stated and shifts in color and whatnot. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen after every few movies.

I don't have any complaints about the picture quality, though. It's not the most current HDTV out there, but the discs look great so far. I watched Wolverine last night and it looked great.

I'm very happy with it, even on the 1080i - it's not as insanely sharp is the newer HDTVs that you see in the store, but it's a definite improvement. I saw Watchmen on blu-ray last weekend and it looked incredible.

I paid about $20 for the component cables at Best Buy since I was getting the player that day anyway. I highly recommend monoprice, though, like Downhere just posted.

Just don't let them sucker you into the Monster cables. They're way overpriced.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for December
Warner Home Video has announced that it will release the latest instalment of the Harry Potter series, 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince', on Blu-ray on December 8, day-and-date with the DVD. No edition details have been divulged at this time, other than it will be a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack.

Rumor: Moulin Rouge Blu-ray Coming Soon, Alien in 2010
Our friends at The Digital Bits have learned from "industry sources" that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is likely to announce the release of Baz Luhrmann's 'Moulin Rouge!' on Blu-ray "in the weeks ahead". Additionally, the site has confirmed that the studio continues to work on an 'Alien' anthology Blu-ray box set for release in 2010.

Rumor is though is that Paul Anderson who directed Punch-Drunk Love is working on getting Boogie Nights and Magnolia released on Blu-ray so maybe it will be released with those instead.

Well the Aliens Anthology was already being prepped for a 2009 release because this year is the 30th Anniversary of the first film so it made sense. But eventually they pushed it back to 2010 which pissed a lot of people off.

BD Details for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
After the announcement yesterday, Warner Home Video has now revealed the full release details for 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince', due out December 8. The Blu-ray will include a DVD and a digital copy of the movie, and will exclusively feature Warner's Maximum Movie Mode, as well as Facebook Connect via BD-Live - and it will apparently come in a cool-looking lenticular case.

Special features include:

Ultimate Editions Announced for First Two Harry Potter Movies
Warner Home Video has announced and detailed ' Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Ultimate Edition' and 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Ultimate Edition', due out on December 8, tying in with the release of 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'. These rereleases will contain theatrical and extended versions of the movies, and the first two parts of a new comprehensive series documentary, plus In-Movie Experience, Maximum Movie Mode and BD-Live, and a 48-page photo book.

These are the first two of eight total Harry Potter Ultimate Editions. Warner is expected to gradually release Ultimate Editions of the remaining Harry Potter films (yes, even 'Half-Blood Prince') to tie in with the theatrical or home video releases of parts I and II of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'.

The extended cuts add 7 minutes to 'Sorcerer's Stone', and 13 minutes to 'Chamber of Secrets.'

Each of the Ultimate Editions will include a new one-hour featurette that highlights a unique aspect of the filmmaking process and will be combined to make the complete eight-hour documentary, "Creating the World of Harry Potter."

'Sorcerer's Stone' will have Creating the World of Harry Potter, Part 1: The Magic Begins, in which viewers get an inside, in-depth look at the planning, creativity, personalities and other elements that went into the initial creation of Harry's screen world.

'Chamber of Secrets' contains Creating the World of Harry Potter, Part 2: Characters. Here fans get a first-hand look at the unique strengths of each of the films' directors and what they brought to the principal characters in the Harry Potter film series. In addition, it will include clips of never-before-seen screen tests of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, giving fans a chance to see how the characters have been transformed over the past decade.

I am a Mel Brooks fan but upset about that announcement. No individual releases is ********. In the boxset they are including Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, and Young Frankenstein which have been available already for quite some time so the Mel Brooks fans pretty much own a third of that set. Just like WB with the TMNT movies. I only want the first and I am not buying all four movies just to get the one I really want. Less money for them I guess. Why are studios so stupid? RELEASE INDIVIDUALS.

Ugh, guess I'll be getting the Ultimate Editions of HP. I hope the picture quality is better for the first one, the original release was OK but nothing to write home about. May Netflix Half Blood Prince if an Ultimate Edition is coming out.

I haven't replaced my existing HP movies on BD yet, mainly because they're on TV so much anyway that I rarely watch the DVDs I own, and I just figure they'll be coming out with another 'ultimate edition' once the movies are done. I'll be getting BD of Half-Blood Prince, though.

I have a shelf with all my HP books and DVDs that's already bursting. I have no room for those special editions!!!

Watched Dirty Dancing on BD the other night. I'd heard the picture transfer wasn't very good, but the part of me who grew up watching this at every sleepover party I ever went to and was brokenhearted at the death of Patrick Swayze this week needed this when I found it at Best Buy for $15.

It looks better than I've ever seen it! I was really impressed.

Well, the PQ could be different considering they have the extended cuts as well. Normally I would think the same about the PQ, but in this case you never know. I would like the first one to be redone PQ wise as it wasn't the best...but the second looks really good so no complaints there.

Yeah I know but I have learned when it comes to WB you should always have low expectations that way you don't end up disappointing yourself. Wasn't part of the allure of DVD was that it was more compact and takes up less space? Why are they making certain movies only available in boxes that look like they are storing a ****ing board game? I am kind of sick of the WB routine.

I don't mind that they do these big box collector's edition releases but you HAVE to make copies available that come in a normal case they are sort of alienating a large group of people.

With other users mentioning having some problems with certain blu ray disc I was hoping someone might be able to answer a question I have regarding Sweeney Todd on blu ray. The disc I have looks great up until about the last 15 minutes of the movie at which point the picture seems to develop alot of noise. It doesn't seem to be normal film grain but more like static. I was wondering if anyone else that had the disc has had similar problems. In reading reviews for the disc I haven't seen anyone make mention of this so I'm wondering if my copy is defective. I would like to hear from someone else though before repurchasing the disc, because unfortunately I kept the disc for awhile before watching it so I'm unable to return it where I purchased it. Any help is appreciated.

That's why I think that the digibook is a good middle ground between the gigantic collector's box and a normal case.

Have no idea if that is a defective copy it sounds like it could just be the transfer. Maybe you should try renting or borrowing another copy and see if you encounter the same problem with another disc.

Slim PS3 Sells One Million in First 3 Weeks
During the Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced that retail sales of its new, slim PS3 achieved a total of 1 million units worldwide in the three weeks since its launch (at a retail price of ¥29,980 in Japan, $299 in the US and €299 in Europe). No breakdown of that overall sales figure by territory was divulged at this time.

Previously, SCEI had stated that sales had increased by as much as 300 percent with the new price tag.

Toshiba to Launch 2160p TV with Built-in BD and Cell Processor
Toshiba has confirmed that they are close to launching its flagship LED TV, which will uniquely include the 64-bit Cell processor used in Sony's PS3. The "Cell Regza" will have a panel resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. It will include a Blu-ray player and a 1TB recorder. Toshiba has confirmed that the Cell Regza will be on display at the CES show in January 2010.

Masaaki Oosumi, president of Toshiba's Digital Media Network Company, said that this new TV "brings together Toshiba imaging, storage and network technologies". He added, "it will be Toshiba's flagship model in the true sense. It is the ultimate entertainment machine that brings more excitement than a movie in a theatre. I would like to let users experience the same sensation as they felt by watching a color TV for the first time."

Toshiba will announce the specifications of the Cell TV within days, Oosumi said. It will be first available in Japan in December 2009. As for the pricing, he just said that it will be "fairly expensive".

Yes, I prefer consistency. I would have preferred the option of viewing the movie in scope throughout. I imagine it will be worse with Transformers 2 since I heard the scenes in IMAX are like a few seconds at a time and then back to regular film stock.

I don't mind when a movie starts off at one aspect ratio and then switches to another for the remainder of the film, but the alternating aspect ratios are just annoying.

Don't care about the shifts but can you imagine the quality. It would cost A LOT of money and be very difficult but it can be done just as long as WB thinks it will make a ton of money which is not a bad bet that it will make a ton. I wonder if they would also go the 3D route. That seems to be the starting trend for IMAX movies these days.

And on a very similar and more confusing note it looks like Wal-mart will ALSO have a The Wizard of Oz Blu-ray exclusive. This one looks to be $19.99 and comes in a NORMAL Blu-ray case unlike the other versions.

Does anyone else get annoyed when these big box sets resort to cardboard cases for the movie itself instead of just giving you a standard plastic one? I mean if you're gonna fork over all that extra $$$ you shouldn't have to worry about the box getting dinged up.

Wolverine Sells Over 20% on Blu-ray
20th Century Fox has revealed that for their recent home video release of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', over 20% of all units sold were on the Blu-ray format, with some retailers reporting up to 25%. This not only beats the industry standard average of 12.5%, but also becomes Fox's best performing Blu-ray title, eclipsing the Blu-ray release of 'Quantum of Solace'.

Additionally, Fox has revealed that their IMDB.com BD-Live feature was accessed more than any previous Fox BD-Live feature.

As the first summer blockbuster title, 'Wolverine' is seen by the industry as a good indicator for Q4 sales. In response some retailers are increasing their allotments of upcoming titles (such as 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen') in anticipation of brisk Blu-ray sales.

NPD says Blu-ray going mainstream next year (http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/19614.cfm)

According to a new NPD analysis, Blu-ray (http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/blu-ray.cfm) will finally break into the mainstream in 2010, especially as prices continue to drop.

The company researched consumers using Blu-ray set-top boxes (not including the PS3) in February 2008 and in August of this year, and the figures clearly showed that BD (http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/bd.cfm) is out of the "early adopter" phase (http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/phase.cfm) and into the "dreamers" phase which is the group that wants the new technology but are "deterred by price."

Regardless, NPD says falling prices, strong holiday sales, and a slowing uptrending economy will finally push Blu-ray from "niche" technology to "mainstream."

In the 2008 study, over 64 percent of users were early adopters, which only account for 20 percent of the entire market. By August however, the number had been reduced to 38 percent, and replaced by "dreamers" and "sensibles," a group full of middle aged families who like the technology but waited some time before investing. Those two groups account for over 40 percent of the entire market.

“In the last year, we have made great strides toward becoming mainstream, but we’re not quite there yet,” notes NPD analyst Russ Crupnick, via VB (http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6698792.html). “But going into the holiday season, we are seeing a combination of fairly reasonable price points on hardware and a lot of content. By February, after the holidays, it’s going to quickly look more and more mainstream. We are on that path.”

There are however still a decent amount of "late adopters" who do not care for the technology or are neutral. Neutral consumers are at 17 percent while "anti-tech" (users that frankly hate Blu-ray) are at 7 percent.http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/19614.cfm

The PS3 Slim is gonna do well this Xmas and I expect Blu-ray player prices to drop lower. Also Blu-ray's themselves have been getting a lot lower in price. There is definitely going to be a significant Blu-ray boost this holiday season.

It's also been nice to see that brick and mortar stores are having good sales on worthy titles (Like when I got Benjamin Button for $14.99 at Best Buy) instead of just amazon.com

Rumor: Inglourious Basterds BD for Mid-December
Apparently, Quentin Tarantino's latest movie will make it on Blu-ray before Christmas after all. According to site Den of Geek, 'Inglourious Basterds' will be released on December 15 in the US (December 14 in the UK). No disc details are available, and this release date is unofficial until an announcement is made.

PSP Digital Copy Included on Sony Blu-ray Releases
Beginning with the November 10th Blu-ray releases of 'Godzilla' and 'The Ugly Truth', Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will include a digital copy especially for the PSP on all their Blu-ray disc releases. The announcement comes just days before the release the PSP Go, Sony's latest iteration of their portable gaming platform which will - for the first time - have no removable media option.

The PSP digital copy will only be accessible on the PS3, and will only play on the PSP. For some releases, like 'The Ugly Truth', a separate DVD will be included for the PC digital copy.

Rich Marty, Vice President of New Business Development at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, commented, "This latest enhancement to Blu-ray and Digital Copy demonstrates the versatility of the format and its ability to deliver a multi-platform video experience. It also showcases the unique advantage that the PlayStation 3 brings to the Blu-ray consumer."

Well Fantasia and Beauty and the Beast are coming 2010 as well. Disney expects to have all these titles available sometime between 2011-2015. The Lion King, Bambi, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, and 101 Dalmatians. But that is just their "Diamond Collection". We should see plenty more scattered in there.
