I believe I have...well what I'm saying at least is that I traded in a lot of my duplicate DVDs, but used the funds to buy Batman: Arkham Asylum instead. I don't get paid till the 16th now, but once the money's coming in again, it'll be time for me to start giving it to amazon.com again

I FINALLY got The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray the other day (it's on sale at Best Buy for $19). Also, I just ordered Incredible Hulk for $15 including shipping off of eBay, so hopefully it arrives early next week. I've been out of the movie purchasing habit for a while (mostly because when I was home this summer my bro owned all the movies I wanted to watch), but I'm finally starting to catch up again.

^This. If you already own the DVD's you're not going to miss the extras not being there, and if you're buying for picture quality (which you should be) all of the discs in the set are top-notch, demo-worthy transfers.

Maybe this has already been mentioned....

According to Michael Bay's Official Website Message Board, Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen the IMAX version of the movie will be sold exclusively through Wal-Mart on DVD & Blu-Ray.

http://www.shootfortheedit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5972

This is all it said "I spoke to Paramount today and here's the lowdown on the Imax TF2 release: Walmart will have exclusive rights on selling the ROFT (w/ Imax) on DVD and Blu-ray."

RedIsNotBlue

That sounds really stupid. But I guess that is typical Michael Bay.

BatMatt
10-03-2009, 08:19 AM
So what, Paramount will have to cut four different prints? Widescreen DVD and Blu-ray and IMAX DVD and Blu-Ray? There is also no point to IMAX on DVD either. Very odd

Is the Imax version shorter? If so I may need to opt for that one over the regular version.

Nope, it's actually 28 seconds longer

So, I'm assuming this means any Transformers 2 copy not sold at Wal-Mart will have a consistent 2.35 framing? Because if so, then I'll be buying at Best Buy. :D

With Help from PS3, Adoption of Blu-ray Faster than DVD
According to a new study released by Futuresource, adoption of Blu-ray will surpass DVD when comparing year five for each home video medium. In 2002, DVD adoption (including the PS2) was 32.6%, and Futuresource is predicting that in 2010, Blu-ray adoption (including PS3) will be 34.1%. They further predict that in year eight (2013), adoption of Blu-ray will rise to 67.8%.

Removing the video game systems from the equation, DVD is predicted to be slightly ahead - possibly showing the a growing acceptance of video game systems as media players rather than just for gaming.

The predictions aren't all that flattering, however, with Futuresource predicting that Blu-ray will never catch up to standard DVD presence due to a rise in video-on-demand and web downloads.

Man this sucks, Wal-Mart is going to make a person pay extra for the Imax version of the Transformers 2 Blu-Ray. Depending on the Wal-Mart store in your area prices will vary but at least you will get a choice if it is worth paying the extra money for a tiny bit of difference in the movie.

These are the prices that each version will cost if you were to order from Wal-Mart.com.

The $24.86 regular version of the Blu-Ray.

Well yeah Spider-Man 3 has a whole disc dedicated to special features but Sony skimped on the first two having special features. They will probably get them on the re-release for Spider-Man 4. But as far as visual and audio go the discs available now are sure to please.

I am actually surprised how low the prices seem to be dropping at my local Wal-Mart. In January I remember Pineapple Express being like $30. But yesterday I just picked up Wolverine: Origins for my birthday which comes with a DVD copy and a digital copy and it was only priced at $19.96.

Also don't go by the prices on Wal-Mart's site. They do not price match and their pricing can vary at every location.

Well like I have said before you are going to be waiting quite a while. Sony won't re-release the movies until the fourth Spidey is being promoted or hitting Blu-ray. And Spidey 4 is being released in 2011 so you are going to be waiting a MINIMUM of a year...most likely 2 years...from now before you see a re-release available.

TDK Develops a 320GB Blu-ray Disc
TDK is set to demonstrate a 10-layer 320GB Blu-ray Disc at CEATEC in Japan this week. The company was able to expand the capacity of each layer from the standard 25GB to 32GB, and stack them them up to 10 layers thick while using existing Blu-ray technology. TDK was able to do this by altering the material of each layer to operate at higher efficiency.

After testing, TDK determined that the error rate met the threshold for wide-spread use, and are currently determining commercial viability for the product.

Snow White Blu-ray Drops to $9.99 with Promo Code
We know that many of you have already taken advantage of the amazing Amazon 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' Blu-ray deal, but also realize that even at that ridiculously low price, some were hesitant. To those holding back, be aware that Amazon has dropped the price of this Disney classic to $19.99, meaning that when you use the "snowhite" promo code, the price drops to just $9.99!

For less than $10 you can own the Blu-ray (and DVD) of one of the most popular and classic Disney animated features of all time, 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. But you must hurry, because the title is being released tomorrow, so the window for using the "snowhite" promo code is likely limited.

For those who have already taken advantage of this amazing deal when your price was $14.99, no need to re-order. Amazon's "Pre-order Price Guarantee" promises to give you the lowest price between when you order and the title is released, so you automatically get this lower price as well.

Ah well, I am getting Spidey 3 for nothing and have the others on DVD so can wait.

Paramount Announces G.I. Joe Blu-ray
Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the summer action hit 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' to Blu-ray on November 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. For the two-disc set, video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

I just noticed this, this is a definite must buy. This was one of those super fun movies...great action and should have some nice sound. Plus, The Baroness and O'Hara were hot. :woot:

I believe a while back I saw a rumor that the Jurassic Park Trilogy is said to be in the works for a Blu-ray release within the next year or two. If I had to guess at the earliest we would see that is late 2010. I predict Universal will have a bigger year next year when it comes to catalog releases. I already know we should expect an announcement for the Back to the Future Trilogy before the end of the year for an early 2010 release.

Yeah, some bits will be great on blu-ray, it will be a great 'switch of the brain movie,' which I need an abundance of at the moment because my job is very stressful at this time of year!

Having Baroness be a brainwashed good guy, Duke's love and Cobra Commander's sister along with horrible CGI simply just ruined it for me.

Beforehand it was a pretty kick ass turn your brain off action movie. Baroness was not only hot but awesome. But then the final act happened

I didn't mind the ending. I mean, I went in with low expectations and I think doing that helped with liking the movie and even with the somewhat odd ending. But, overall, it was one of those no thinking required fun rides. I've been preferring those types of movies lately. lol.

BDA: No Discs Bigger than 50GB for Movies
With recent announcements from Sharp and TDK regarding increased capacity of Blu-ray discs (100GB and 320GB respectively), the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) was asked to comment on the possibility of Blu-ray movie titles utilizing the new technology. Andy Parsons, Chair of the Blu-ray Disc Association Promotion Committee in the United States, made it clear that this would be unlikely to happen any time soon.

"I think there will be applications for larger capacity recordable discs, but it would be difficult for [discs larger than 50GB] to achieve compatibility with the installed base of players," he said. "This is because player manufacturers design players to meet published specifications that define maximum media capacity, which in the case of Blu-ray Disc, is 50GB on two-layer media."

For those hoping to get the every episode of Seinfeld on one disc, however, there is some hope. Much the same as how VHS added larger formats that were incompatible with existing hardware, Blu-ray could eventually do the same. Parsons was again cautious, however, stating, "But interestingly, virtually all published content in VHS was released in two-hour SP mode, since it was the lowest common denominator among the installed base of tape decks."

For now, these larger discs are being positioned for use as BD-R/RE for storage of data rather than film playback.

After checking the Local Ad section on Wal-Mart.com they have the Blu-Ray version of Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen priced at $19.96 & it is listed as "Two Disc Big Screen Edition", so this must be the Imax version. It also will have different artwork.

I switched off the brain for G.I. Joe but the third act of the film is just sooooooo horrible.

Third act didnt bother me much, and I loved the Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow fight, though it could have been longer.

BTW, anyone know if we are getting the IMAX version of Transformers 2 from any outlets here in the UK?

Uh-oh...looks like more good news. It looks like WB might officially be dropping their new release Blu-ray's down in price from now on. :yay: 4 upcoming pre-orders from them...Shorts, Four Christmases, Terminator: Salvation, and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince are $19.99 right now on Amazon.com. The Half Blood Prince pricing is the biggest deal considering not only does it come with a digital copy but it also comes with a DVD copy of the film.

Terminator is only $19.99? Well that will help swallow the whole "3 minutes extra DC" problem

I will definately NOT be picking that up. But, I did just get King Kong on Blu-Ray. Is the original 1933 version going to be released? A while ago it said they were releasing it, now it was just kind of forgotten.

Oppo Launches in UK, Pulls Plug on DVD
Oppo, the maker of the acclaimed BDP-83 Blu-ray player, is expanding its BD business to the UK and has revealed that the company is no longer interested in developing DVD hardware. "We have sold out of DVD players and there are no more to come," said Oppo spokesman Pan Min to UK magazine Home Cinema Choice. "The DVD business is over for us. We are committed to Blu-ray."

Oppo is setting up a base in the UK to develop its Blu-ray business. The European version of its BD player, the BDP-831, is now available in the UK, priced at around £450.

"We may be a very small company," said Min, "but where we are different from the likes of Denon and Sony is that we listen to our customers. Feedback is really important."

Min revealed that Oppo currently has an engineering team of around 100 based in China working on its Blu-ray products.

Another Best Buy Exclusive: The Green Mile BD
We definitely haven't seen the last of Blu-ray exclusives at select retailers. Again without any formal announcement, our forum members have found the Blu-ray of Frank Darabont's 'The Green Mile' sitting on the shelves of Best Buy. The disc comes in the now-familiar Warner digibook, and carries a $29.99 price tag.

Rumor: Branagh's Hamlet Blu-ray in 2010

Posted October 15, 2009 06:58 AM by Juan Calonge

Warner Bros. Kenneth Branagh's famously unabridged adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' used to be one of the longest awaited titles on DVD, and when it was finally released in 2007, it didn't get a Blu-ray or HD DVD version, contrary to earlier reports. Now Warner Home Video has allegedly put the title back on the schedule for a BD release, with a tentative street date of August 17, 2010.

That date must be considered unofficial, especially at such an early stage, until there is an announcement from the studio.

Special Edition BD for 10 Things I Hate About You
In an early announcement to retailers it has been revealed that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is set to release the romantic comedy '10 Things I Hate About You', starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, on Blu-ray on January 5, 2010. No release details are available at this time, other than it will be a two-disc special edition.

SRP: $34.98 (2-Disc DVD)

Further Details:
Universal Home Video has announced 1-disc DVD ($29.98), 2-disc DVD ($34.98) and 2-disc Blu-ray ($36.98) releases of Public Enemies for the 8th December. The 2-disc editions will also include 5 featurettes ("Michael Mann: Making Public Enemies", "On Dilliger's Trail: The Real Locations", "Larger Than Life: Adversaries", "Criminal Technology", "Last of the Legendary Outlaws"), and a digital copy of the film. Universal hasn't revealed the package artwork yet I'm afraid, but we'll bring you that shortly. Stay tuned.

And another BB Exclusive: Iron Man Armored Adventures
Back in July, Genius Entertainment announced the release of 'Iron Man Armored Adventures, Volume 1' on Blu-ray and DVD for October 20. However, the BD version seemed to have fallen from the schedule, and some put that down to the financial problems at Genius/Weinstein. Now, TV Shows on DVD has again the scoop that the Blu-ray version will indeed see the light on schedule, but as a Best Buy exclusive.

Since this is the HD thread... i would like to ask is it possible to have 1080p (im assuming thats the fullest HD there is) on your computer? Like contained in a video file?

Yes it is possible. BUT...the file sizes would be huge depending on the factors. If you are talking about taking the movie from a Blu-ray disc then that file could be somewhere in between 10-40 GB's.

I believe when it comes to high definition files it would be an MKV file.

Yes MP4 too. I don't know too much about how all that file stuff works I just have a basic knowledge. I don't think an avi file is capable of high definition I could be wrong though. I just am pretty sure that all of the HD movie trailers I have on my PS3 are MKV or MP4.

I switched to getting blu-ray discs on Netflix, and so far 4 of the movies they've sent me (A Bug's Life, Watchmen, Benjamin Button, and The Proposal) have completely died on me - they paused at least an hour into the movie, starts making noise the like the disc is stuck, then just stops and tells me the disc can't be played.

But the BDs I own are fine. Never had any problem. It just happens to any disc I get from Netflix. I checked the firmware updates (Samsung BD-P1600) and everything is up-to-date.

Has anyone heard of problems like that?

It sounds like a player issue but if all the discs that you own play all the way through then that is very strange. Is there anyway you can try the rented discs on another player and see if you have the same issues?

Terminator Salvation Gets Audio Live Community Screening with Director
On December 5, at 6 p.m. PST, Warner Home Video will hold an audio-enabled live community screening of 'Terminator Salvation' with its director, McG. This is an industry first: while there have been BD-Live-enabled community screenings with filmmakers in the past (first and most notably that for 'The Dark Knight' in December 2008), they had been text-based.

Viewers watching the screening on BD Live-enabled Blu-ray players will be able to simultaneously watch the movie and hear an interactive fan Q&A conducted by the movie director McG. People can submit questions to McG through Web-connected computers or mobile devices.

To participate in the screening, you have to sign up for an invitation through Warner's BD Live network. The community screening is open for the first 100,000 members who respond.

Inglourious Basterds Gets US Date
In an early announcement to retailers it has been revealed that Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' on Blu-ray on December 15, day-and-date with the DVD. This will be a two-disc special edition, and contents are expected to be similar be similar to those on the UK edition Blu-ray that was recently announced for December 7.

As usual, this date can't be considered official until there is a formal announcement by the studio.

PS3 Still Impacting Blu-ray Sales
According to a new study by NPD Group, 66% of people who buy a PS3 are using the devise to play Blu-ray movies, a number which not changed since a similar poll was taken August 2008. When comparing the console to the PS2, which general accepted as having greatly accelerated the adoption of DVD, the PS3 has a higher level of adoption for use of the new media.

Russ Crupnick, an analyst for NPD, comment, "Most PS3 people think of it as a gaming device, but there is a reasonable level of awareness and intended use for Blu-ray."

When Sony dropped the price of the PS3 last month, it was meant to make the popular game console more appealing to casual gamers. It seems to have worked, as PS3 sales continue to grow as we get closer to the holiday season. What has yet to be seen is if casual gamers will be as quick to adopt a high definition movie format. If Sony can maintain the excitement of Blu-ray with the new PS3 crowd, Blu-ray sales could see significant increases over the next few months.

Blu-ray Up 83% Year-to-Date
Today, the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) released third quarter US sales figures for the home entertainment industry. Blu-ray was up 66.3 percent to $161 million compared to the same period last year (up 83 percent year-to-date to $568 million). BD accounted for 12 percent of all theatrical new release sales in the third quarter.

Furthermore, according to Rentrak Corporation´s Home Video Essentials, Blu-ray rental spending was up 44.5 percent.

In sharp contrast to that, revenues from the supposed nemesis of Blu-ray, digital distribution, grew only 18 percent year on year in the quarter and 20 percent for the first nine months of the year.

Consumer spending for the third quarter of 2009 in the home entertainment window for pre-recorded entertainment, which includes DVD, Blu-ray Disc and digital distribution, was off slightly at $4 billion, down by 3.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

"We are pleased to see an uptick in the number of consumer transactions, indicating a continuing strong demand for home entertainment product," said Ron Sanders, President of DEG and also of Warner Home Video. "We are also encouraged by the dramatic growth of Blu-ray and the increases in digital distribution and rental in the third quarter."

Blu-ray, proving to be home entertainment´s stand out performer in 2009, is accounting for 12 percent of all theatrical new release sales in the third quarter. The year´s best selling Blu-ray Disc titles, 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' and 'Watchmen', have each approached or surpassed 30 percent of consumer spending on Blu-ray Disc.

"Titles that appeal to the early adopter demographic continue to perform increasingly well on Blu-ray, representing upwards of 20 percent of all physical media sales," said Bob Chapek, Chairman of DEG and President of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. "As the penetration of Blu-ray increases, we are beginning to see the same kind of response by mainstream audiences that we are seeing in early adopters."

More than 17 million Blu-ray discs shipped to retail in the third quarter of the year, an increase of 35 percent over the same period last year.

According to figures compiled by the DEG based on data from CEA, retailers and manufacturers, Blu-ray Disc playback devices sold 3.3 million units through the first three quarters of 2009, an increase of 13 percent over the same period last year. Through the first three quarters of 2009, Blu-ray Disc set-top player sales grew 112 percent over same period last year.

Blu-ray playback device households are nearly 11.7 million and include PS3, standalone players and home-theater-in-a-box systems. Approximately 80 percent of Blu-ray devices are BD-Live capable.

"We´re enthusiastic about the continued promise of Blu-ray Disc with more entry level players coming to market and the upcoming strong slate of box office blockbusters," said Amy Jo Smith, Executive Director, DEG.

Half-Blood Prince Worldwide BD-Live Community Screening
In another industry first, Warner Home Video has announced a worldwide BD-Live audio-based community screening. On December 12 at 8 p.m. UK time (3 p.m. EST), Harry Potter fans will be able to attend a community screening of the 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' Blu-ray, hosted by director David Yates and actor Daniel Radcliffe. In past community screenings, only fans from North America had been able to participate.

"I'm really looking forward to the live community screening of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and excited to talk directly to fans of the movie about my experiences and answer their questions," said Radcliffe. "It's a wonderful way for fans and for those directly involved with making a film to share opinions and ideas."

Yates added, "I'm looking forward to engaging with the thoughts and opinions of the fans who have supported us so loyally and passionately over the years-without them the films wouldn't be the success they are."

And Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen which is out today is down to $19.99 on Amazon.com.

Yeah but Wal-Mart's prices can vary from store to store so just keep that in mind guys. But also when I first heard that Wal-Mart was getting the IMAX exclusive release I thought it was stupid. But now I realize it is even more stupid and a complete marketing scheme. It isn't like The Dark Knight where roughly 30 minutes of the film was shot for IMAX from what I can gather the IMAX footage in Transformers 2 is LESS THAN 1 MINUTE. Seriously? Come on who really cares at that point whether you have the IMAX version. The review I read of this disc said that people after watching the 2 versions couldn't even tell the difference. The IMAX footage sounds really insignificant.

Hey guys, my friend just got his first blu-ray (Transformers 2 Big Screen Edition) and is experiencing some problems. For some reason he's getting the black bars on the side along with those of the top and bottom. Now I bought the same version of Transformers 2 so I know that the top and bottom bars are supposed to be there but the side ones are not.

He also has the PS3 Slim for his blu-ray player.

Any idea on what to do?

From The Digital Bits (I had a feeling I was gonna read something like this today):

"It appears that there may be volume problems with the DTS-HD MA mix on the Wal-Mart-exclusive IMAX version of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on Blu-ray. We've gotten a number of complaints from readers about it. We don't have the disc ourselves, so we're looking into it and will update you when we know more. Be advised that the regular Blu-ray version available at other retailers is unaffected."

Exactly that is my point. The IMAX scenes aren't even worth making an exclusive version...it would have made more sense with The Dark Knight. Actually that would have been perfect for The Dark Knight that way we could have also avoided people *****ing about the shifting aspect ratio. But no Paramount decided to make an exclusive release with roughly a minute of IMAX footage which is retarded so I am glad it came back and bit them on the ass and they will probably have to offer an exchange program.

I have a question, is Warner Bros. planning to do what they did with Gone with the Wind like they did with Wizard of Oz by offering the Collector's Edition along with offering other versions of the movie at retailers?

I haven't heard anything official but I would assume so. That seems to be WB's strategy now at least for the moment.

I bought that version of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen & the audio sounded great to me although I only have the audio ran through a 2 speaker stereo system & not a real surround sound system.

WB is keeping their pricing on a good track. The Hangover pre-order for $19.99 on Amazon.com.

I hear that it is just recorded at a lower volume and if you bump up the volume 4db then it should sound similar. Of course, I was given this version of the film as a gift (would have preferred the standard release), but I'll hopefully watch it this weekend and see how the sound is.

Rocky Horror Picture Show Blu-ray in 2010
We see you shiver with antici...pation! Enthusiast site Cosmo's Factory has revealed that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is set to release a 35th anniversary edition Blu-ray of the cult movie 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', including what looks like a movie reenactment on disc, complete with a casting call in New York and filming in Los Angeles.

PS3 Gets Netflix Instant Watch at No Extra Charge
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) and Netflix have announced that the PS3 will soon gain access to Netflix's Instant Watch service. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 next month, at no additional cost to PS3 owners in the US who are also Netflix subscribers – unlike Xbox 360 users, who can stream from Netflix only if they also pay $50 a year for Xbox Live Gold.

The cheapest Netflix plan with unlimited streaming is the $8.99 one-DVD-at-a-time plan ($10.99 if you opt in to rent Blu-ray Discs).

Initially, this service will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. This disc employs BD-Live technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members and PS3 owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 by going to a dedicated sign-up page. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

It is being speculated that a future PS3 firmware update might enable access to Netflix Instant Watching without the need for a streaming disc.

Within Netflix Instant Watching interface, available titles are organized into a variety of categories based on members' personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members' individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix website or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their queues. With the PS3 controller or BD remote, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the PS3 controller or BD remote.

"The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network's video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all."

"As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members," said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. "As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners."

NPD: BD Player Prices Down, Sales Up, Possible $49 Black Friday Deals
Blu-ray player prices are dropping fast, and not only off-brand, barebones models. Even brand-name players with BD-Live and video streaming can be found for under $200. Nearly eight of every ten BD players sold this year through August were under $300, as opposed to only one in ten in the same period last year, according to NPD Group, which also reports that currently, BD unit sales make up 15% of overall US home video player purchases (DVD and BD players put together).

NPD notes that between January and August 2009, 65% of all BD players sold were models priced between $200 and $299. For the same 2008 frame, the vast majority of all such purchases, at 75%, were for players between $300 and $399. Average price has dropped by approximately $100 in one year.

A striking data point is sales of BD players under $200. In Jan-Aug 2008, there were no sales in that price range; in the same period of 2009, 14% of player sales were for players under $200.

During last year's fourth quarter, the biggest Blu-ray player deals featured mostly off-brand players with no BD-Live. Now there are several name-brand BD-Live players with video streaming under $200, such as the Panasonic DMP-BD60, Samsung BD-P1600 and the LG BD370.

"We've seen very strong growth in Blu-ray players this year. It has been a bright spot in a very gloomy industry landscape," said Ross Rubin, NPD director of industry analysis. "Nearly all other electronics device categories have been down, such as digital cameras and MP3 players."

Rubin added that currently, Blu-ray unit sales make up 15% of overall U.S. high-definition/standard-definition home video player purchases. Yet he expects that will increase to 50% of unit sales in 2010 if current demand and pricing trends hold. Rubin expects $99 deals on Black Friday, and says it's "conceivable" that a $49 offer could be seen on Black Friday.

Here is some updates regarding the whole Netflix/PS3 thing.

Update 1
Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities, as cited by Joystiq, noted that the Blu-ray disc required for Netflix playback on the PS3 may circumvent exclusivity clauses instituted by Microsoft. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix's ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii," said Pachter.

Back in April, we reported that a German company had demoed a BD-Live application that turned players into VoD platforms, using a VoD Blu-ray Disc with a specialized Java software application acting as a Client (browser). The Java application in the disc synchronized with the Java operating system inside the Blu-ray player and executed the delivery of movies from a dedicated content management system and video server. Maybe that is the same scheme being used here.

Update 2
Joystiq has interviewed a Netflix representative for more specifics and here are the main details:

* The PS3 application was developed internally by Netflix, with the help of the Sony team.
* The Netflix disc has to be inserted every time to access the Netflix service. It can't be installed on the PS3 hard drive.
* A disc-based streaming application was used because it was the fastest and easiest way to implement streaming on the PS3.
* Late 2010, an embedded solution is expected for the PS3 via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.
* No special features will be available for streaming.
* There is no difference between the content catalog available on PS3 versus Xbox 360.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Dominates the Charts
Home Media Magazine reports that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has already become the top-selling home entertainment release of the year with first-week sales of 7.5 million units!

The sequel also became the biggest-selling Blu-ray Disc release of 2009, with first-week sales of 1.2 million units.

"Revenge of the Fallen" topped day-one sales, having moved 2 million discs its first day in stores, 500,000 of them on the Blu-ray Disc format.

The sequel easily debuted at No. 1 on all three charts: the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, Home Media Magazine's rental chart and the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Rumor: Blu-ray Enabled Wii 2 in 2010
Gaming site Maxconsole.net, citing information leaked to Logic-Sunrise.com by a Nintendo France marketing employee, is reporting that a new Nintendo console will be launched worldwide in the third quarter of 2010. This "Wii 2" will reportedly get a Blu-ray drive, and support 1080p for games and movies.

An official announcement will reportedly happen just one month before launch date. In the intervening months, "huge publicity and viral marketing will be utilized to create buzz" (so this post is ultimately contributing to that, right? Damned if you do...).

Allegedly, there will be the option to trade in old Wii's for "Wii 2" consoles.

This rumor comes just after Nintendo's profit fell by more than half in the six months from April, hit by a slump in console sales (it sold 5.75m Wiis between April and September, far fewer than the 10m it shifted in the same period last year).

Some analysts are suggesting that a completely new console offers its best hope of reviving hardware sales.

Sony, on the other hand, has benefited from a reduction in the price of the PS3. "The price cut on the PlayStation 3 was effective because people are getting a high spec Blu-ray disc player for a good price," said Yusuke Tsunoda, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities.

A Blu-ray enabled Wii seems like a stupid idea on Nintendo's part, but that's just me.

It isn't stupid if they see Blu-ray and high definition gaming as a growing and profitable business which it is and would continue to grow if they threw their hat into the ring. But this rumor seems unlikely simply based on the fact that the Wii can't even play DVD's right now so this is an out of nowhere announcement. We have already heard of a possible Blu-ray add-on for the 360 which seems more likely at this point but who really knows right now. Right now Blu-ray is taking a decent size chunk of the sales and companies are seeing that. I think this holiday season will be a big indicator on what other companies will decide to do and I think this holiday season will be pretty big for Blu-ray.

If the next system Nintendo designs has Blu-ray, great...but, as an evolutionary step for the current system I have to call it stupid considering their whole thing with the Wii was price, ease of use, and the motion controllers. Plus, it's too soon for a Wii replacement considering the Wii is still doing relatively well and has only been out for a couple of years.

This holiday season I see the PS3 coming out the big winner. Like I said I think this rumor is unlikely but I don't think it is an insane one. It could be Nintendo just trying to nip this thing in the bud according to their predictions of declining hardware sales. These days console "upgrades" is much more prevalent than in the past. I think I have l lost count of how many versions of the PS3 and 360 have been on the market at this point.

I think it's different from the different versions of the PS3 and 360, most of those were hard drive size differences, not a redesign to implement Blu-ray. Honestly, I could see Microsoft doing it before Nintendo. Adding/redesigning the Wii will only make it more expensive which is not in line with what the Wii was supposed to represent.

Nintendo isn't going to use blu-ray for it's next console. I guarantee it. They'll develop a 25GB/50GB disk if they go high-def, but it won't be blu-ray. They don't want to shell the royalties to Sony, Panasonic, and Philips for every game sold and they don't want to shell out royalties for blu-ray technology.

The same reason why the Wii doesn't use DVD despite the Wii Optical Disk holding the same amount of data so they don't have to pay royalties to Toshiba for disks and technology.

As far as the "Jurassic Park" movies go, if I remember correctly Steven Spielberg is holding it back and refusing to let Universal release it on HD DVD because he hates HD DVD and loves loves Blu-ray and wants Universal to defect to Blu-ray so he can release it on that format. ;)

So all we have to do is wait for Universal to join the Blu-ray side and then within a couple months at the most we should see "Jurassic Park", and a flood of all of the other Spielberg movies finally hitting Blu-ray. :)

I don't think it was a love/hate thing but obviously he prefers the Blu-ray format. And it isn't as simple as a snap of the fingers to release his movies on Blu-ray. The man has a huge catalog of mouthwatering movies BUT he is a busy man and I am sure Universal and Spielberg himself wants him to have a hand in some of those releases in the way he had a hand in the Close Encounters Blu-ray release. Right now he is finishing up The Adventures of Tintin so I am sure he is putting all of his focus on that. And even if they come they will come slowly because studios want to milk the cow not give the whole thing away.

We already have Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull available with the Jurassic Park trilogy, Minority Report and the rest of the Indiana Jones movies rumored for a 2010 release. I also know next year is the 35th Anniversary of Jaws so that makes me have my fingers crossed so tight they are bleeding.

Also when I go back to the whole Spielberg and HD-DVD thing the simple fact is this. Universal was the studio that had the best and invested interest in seeing HD-DVD succeed. So why in its 2 year run on the market did we never see JUST ONE of Spielberg's big catalog titles? The only logical assumption I can reach is that Universal didn't want to release his films without his greenlight and the last thing Universal wants to do is piss off and severe ties with a guy like Spielberg.

Okay we have a lot of announcements today so this will be a big post...haha.

Blu-ray Popularity Continues to Grow
At Blu-Con 2.0 yesterday in Los Angeles, a number of Blu-ray stats were revealed to wet the appetites of executives looking the capitalize on the high definition format. Among them was that Blu-ray is now one of the top 10 consumer electronics products most wanted by adults for the holiday season. This is the first time Blu-ray has made the list, and it matches the amount of time it took for DVD to make the list (4 years).

The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) announced that Blu-ray has sold an estimated 11.7 million players in the US. For the first nine months of 2009, 3.3 million players were sold, representing a 112% increase over last year. Additionally, sales of Blu-ray titles are up 83% so far this year.

Gremlins and Green Mile See Expanded Release
Warner Home Video has announced that they will release 'Gremlins' and 'The Green Mile' for Blu-ray on December 1st. Both of these titles have been available exclusively at certain retailers (Target got 'Gremlins' while Best Buy has 'The Green Mile'), but both titles will be available at every Blu-ray retailer starting December 1st.

Pre-Black Friday Walmart Blu-ray Deal
For the week of November 7th-13th, Walmart will be hold special pre-Black Friday deals on electronics. One of the items on sale beginning this Saturday will be the Sony BDP-S360, which will be available for $148. While not the sub-$100 many bargain hunters are looking for, it does match previously revealed Black Friday sales ads from Sears.

Analysts still expect that actual Black Friday sales will include a sub-$100 Blu-ray player, with even the possibility of one going below $50.

Scorsese a Big Blu-ray Fan
At the Blu-Con 2.0 conference yesterday, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who is also a veteran and avid cinephile, sang the praises of the Blu-ray format because it offers viewers at home the chance to "experience the best possible sound and picture" and see "the film as it was meant to be seen." Movies viewed in the HD format boast a "film-grain quality," he added.

Also, Scorsese opined that BD "will extend the life of movies", because the clarity makes classic films look new again, and thus more attractive for younger audiences. “Blu-ray will extend the life of movies,” Scorsese said. "I have a daughter who's 10, and she can't tell the difference between old films and new films." That makes him "very excited and optimistic as a filmmaker and a film lover".

On the other hand, a poor presentation, in his opinion, detracts from the movie-watching experience, especially for younger viewers. “There are subtle things, like not being able to see the actor's eyes. With Blu-ray, you don't have that problem.”

During Q&A time, Scorsese was asked which film he has most enjoyed watching on Blu-ray. Scorsese said it was the 'The Searchers'. The Ford/Wayne classic has long been one of Scorsese's favorites, and he considers the BD "incredible." He said it was "something about the beauty of the landscape and the nature of the faces — you put it on just to check something out, and you can't take it off."

Warner Announces Valentine's Day Blu-ray Price Drops
Warner Home Video has announced a number of female-focused Blu-ray titles that will see their suggest retail prices (SRP) drop to $19.89 on January 19th, just in time for Valentine's Day. The decrease in SRP should result in retail prices of between $12-15, depending on your retailer preference. Some titles, like 'The Wedding Singer: Totally Awesome Edition', can already be had in the sub-$10 price range, so don't expect to see any price change for those titles.

The complete list of titles are:

* He's Just Not That Into You
* The Lake House
* License to Wed
* Nights in Rodanthe
* No Reservations
* P.S. I Love You
* The Wedding Singer: Totally Awesome Edition
* The Women

Godfather & Godfather Part II Get Sapphire Blu-ray Releases
Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that the next two titles in their Sapphire Series Blu-ray releases will be individual releases of 'The Godfather: Sapphire Series' and 'The Godfather: Part II - Sapphire Series'. Original only available as part of the 'The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration', the discs will be identical to those original releases.

Notably missing from the announcement is individual releases for 'The Godfather: Part III' and the fourth disc from the set which features a ton of bonus material. Many collectors were waiting for individual releases due to the inclusion of 'The Godfather: Part III' in the original set, which is generally seen as the weakest of the three films.

Both 'The Godfather' and 'The Godfather: Part II' Sapphire Series Blu-ray individual releases will be available on February 2nd.

And another way to save some money on Amazon they are currently running a $10 off special if you order Monster Inc. with Up you get them both for $37.48 right now.

Our friends at The Digital Bits have confirmed with "studio and industry sources" that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the 'Alien' anthology on Blu-ray during 2010, so it seems that the studio would not wait for Ridley Scott's future reboot/prequel. Not to be confused with the 1995 BBC miniseries of the same name, which was released on Blu-ray earlier this year, this 2005 motion picture is coming to Blu-ray for the first time.

Universal Does Atonement for Blu-ray
In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release 'Atonement' on Blu-ray on January 26, 2010. No disc details are available at the moment. 'Atonement' is a drama set in pre-WWII Britain, based on a novel by Ian McEwan and starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. It was nominated to seven Academy Awards and won one (best music).

Wizard of Oz Emerald Edition BD Gets Wide Release
Warner Home Video has announced 'The Wizard of Oz: Emerald Edition' for release on Blu-ray on December 1. When Victor Fleming's classic was released on September 29, this three-disc, no-frills set was originally a retailer exclusive, available only at Target stores. Now all bricks-and-mortar and Internet retailers will be able to stock it. As we explained during release week on the Wizard of Oz buying guide, the Emerald Edition is comprised of three discs, and contains all the disc-based contents from the Ultimate Collector's Edition, including the six-hour MGM documentary "When the Lion Roars", but not the digital copy, or any of the collectibles. This edition carries an MSRP of $49.99, or $35 less than the Ultimate Collector's Edition.

Paramount's yearly phailure achieved.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Released on USB

Kingston and Paramount have teamed up to bring the much watched Transformers sequel directly to USB. Paramount Digital Entertainment has announced that they’ve signed a deal with Kingston to bring their films to USB drives and SD cards, but the release of 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' just has us scratching our heads. Everyone seems to agree that digital distribution is the future of entertainment, but just how it will be delivered seems to be in strong contention. Netflix and Hulu take a streaming approach, while Blockbuster and Amazon go for a pay per view sort of download service. Kingston and Paramount have, on the other hand, created a way to combine the inconvenience of having to leave the house to purchase a movie with the video quality of a stream.

For $30, consumers are able to pick up the newest Transformers film on a 4GB USB drive. According to Kingston, users simply need to plug the USB drive into their computer to play the file, but details on what format the file will be in and what kind of DRM will be involved aren’t there.

There’s also no information on the quality of the video included, but since it’s on a 4GB drive, we can assume it’s not up to Blu-ray standards.

All this wouldn’t be so bad if the cost of the USB drive and movie were less than the two purchased separately, but for $30, that just isn’t the case, as a quick Amazon search quickly confirms.

Paramount says that more movies are coming via USB sticks and SD cards, but if a $30 price tag and less than impressive visuals are what we’re getting, expect the trend to end soon.

One of our fellow forum members from Denmark is telling us that he has scored a copy of the Blu-ray of 'Fight Club', which includes a trailer for 'Road to Perdition', labeling it as "coming soon." Note that despite being a Dreamworks title, this movie is distributed in Europe by the local branch of 20th Century Fox.

That doesn't necessarily mean that this movie will also get a Blu-ray release in the US, but it gives hope.

I don't think so. I think all we know at this point is that a LOTR Trilogy is "SUPPOSED" to be on shelves in February. None of the details have been confirmed by WB so at this point it is still speculation. But we do know that it was previously announced and only supposed to contain the theatrical cuts and then it was delayed to a later date. It could be a sign WB saw the outrage of consumers and decided to go ahead and just go with the extended cuts. But like I said it is all speculation for now.

As for Lord of the Rings, if I can only afford one copy (for now) I will probably just buy the theatrical cuts. I've only watched the extended ones a few times, and while I did enjoy them I do see the theatrical versions as being the definitive cuts. If I'm going to watch the extended versions, it's like an event, because they're so long and the pacing is so off that getting through one in one evening is a bit of an endurance test. I can live without the extended editions in HD for now, but I must have the theatrical ones.

Terminator 2
Australia
The Proposal
Coraline
Sleeping Beauty
Dirty Dancing
X-Men Origins Wolverine
Quantum of Solace
Hairspray
The Dark Knight

I'm getting UP this week, and then Star Trek on release day. Harry Potter after that, and hopefully a lot more by Christmas. :woot:

Love the online coupon thing that Disney is doing with new releases - here's the $10 coupon for UP:

http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/animatedfilms/up/couponoffer/

I got Up and Monster's Inc for $9 plus tax for both!

Here's how I was able to do it...and it has to be at Target from what I understand.

Here is how you go about getting the deal that I got for these two movies:

For the Up $10 coupon, go to: http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/animatedfilms/up/couponoffer/ (You will have to install a coupon program and then you just allow it to print the coupon out for you.)

For the Monster’s Inc. coupon, you will have to make an account with Disney rewards: http://disney.go.com/disneymovierewards/

Then, once you have an account there, put the following code in the “Enter Code” section: 786936164886
Once you do that it will give you a link for the coupon, which will use the same coupon program that Up used

For the target coupon, go to: http://offers.e-centives.com/mcp/pd.cfm?encp=Y8UaV2wwHW3zk3WHVv3Kdtvh59iVrt2WffBOhN 6NEGrRSgr9l4zZUctm3DB3dhap4NFECkkKzTx1%0D%0AUpk8Tt ztJk9brj%2BjkvH3Eztxz7UtXzjT2jO2xOq8TPt1wTPnDyPNnt hvnlj5FN3kc1DIDLJLnTG2%0D%0AEVpgeJHtTWTp407At3GtT8 yq1CqgXQ%3D%3D

You will have to go to page three on that link and it will be the first one on the second row. It will have the Blu-ray logo.

Once you have all three printed out, you will then want to head to Target and grab the Up and Monster’s Inc. Blu-ray’s. On the Monster’s Inc. case there will be a coupon stuck to it and you will want to take that off so you can use.

Since you will be using four coupons, it would be safe to add 2 items that are cheap like drinks or candy or something so that the register sees four items, since you are using four coupons.

Once you are all set, go to the checkout and let them scan everything and then just hand the cashier all the coupons. That’s how I did it.

Hope this helps.

Turn on the display and see what kind of audio is running. If you have a PS3 just hit triangle then Display and it should tell you what kind of audio is playing. It could be that they were pushing the limits with the space so they had to cut some corners and make the menus more simple looking? I don't know I can never figure out what the hell WB is doing half the time.

3D Blu-ray coming sometime next year

Our recap of Blu-con 2.0 continues with a look at the emerging world of Blu-ray 3D!

3D is the hottest thing in movies right now. It’s a box office buoying premium experience that has captured audience attention around the globe (internationally, ‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs’ is the third highest grossing movie of all time, behind only ‘Titanic’ and ‘Return of the King’). And next year, it could be in your friggin' living room!

The Blu-ray Disc Association, a 170-company conglomerate responsible for establishing Blu-ray standards, is currently finishing up specs (a.k.a. requirements) that will usher Blu-ray into the 3D era. They plan to announce these new specs next month (before the end of this year), with the hope that manufacturers can produce equipment by Christmas 2010, perhaps even sooner. Panasonic was in house to say that they consider 3D a “revolution, not just a small feature.” They’re planning to get to “mass market pricing” as soon as possible. 3D won’t simply be for “the exotic few” who can afford luxury.

What do we know?

Though the standards are not finalized, we know we’ll be getting full 1080p video projected to both the right and left eyes. And they’re building in backwards compatibility on hardware AND software. Meaning, not only will 3D Blu-ray players be able to play CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and 3D Blu-rays, but 3D Blu-rays will also play in 2D Blu-ray players (but ONLY in 2D).

Wait, so none of my current equipment will play 3D?

Correct. The BDA wants you to know that your current devices aren’t going to be obsolete (which is why they built in the backwards compatibility onto the discs themselves), this is just an added layer for those who want it. Meaning, 3D at home requires the purchase of a 3D Blu-ray player as well as a 3D Blu-ray compatible TV and 3D glasses (which will be handled by the TV manufacturers).

So how does it look (a.k.a. is it worth it to wear silly glasses)?

As a fan of all things high def and a rampant early adopter. Ohhhhh yeah! Panasonic had a slick demo at Blu-Con 2.0 displaying 1080p to each eye, 120 frames-per-second. They’re planning to have their 3D devices available as a bundle (player, plasma TV, and glasses) when the technology hits the big box stores next year. We screened the trailer for Disney’s ‘A Christmas Carol’, footage from the 2008 summer Olympics / a preview for the 2010 winter games, and the teaser trailer of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar.’ Having recently seen both trailers in 3D cinemas (‘A Christmas Carol’ was on the ‘Toy Story 1 & 2’ double feature), they looked exactly as they did in the theatre. Both the good and bad aspects. The 3D effects were great, but sometimes the focus was hard to find and the image could be occasionally dim (thanks to wearing glasses; Roger Ebert wrote about this in his review of ‘Up’). But the 3D HD video footage of the sporting events was breathtaking. I’ve never seen anything like it (except for IMAX, which stands seven stories tall). It literally felt like there was a portal in the wall of this demo truck, and that I could have leapt through it into the stadiums of Beijing, or onto the snowy ski trails outside of Vancouver. It was so bright, clear, and crisp (sign me up for the first 3D Super Bowl).

One of the themes of the Blu-Con is that Blu-ray needs that wow factor to break into the mass market beyond the ten or so percent it has currently reached (interesting note, no video format has ever hit 10% of a market share and NOT gone on to mass adoption). That Blu-ray and its BD-Live technology need to be so exciting, people forcibly drag friends and families over to see it, and say, “you gotta get Blu-ray, look at what it does.” It’s been a huge obstacle to get people away from, “yeah, well my DVDs look good, so why do I need Blu-ray?”

3D Blu-ray is the game changer. Anyone and everyone will see the difference, whether or not they understand data rates, bandwidth, or other tech terms. This is the leap forward DVD brought to the home entertainment world over VHS in 1997. Look out cinemas. We may soon have a reason to never leave the house again.

Sorry, but I'm not buying a new TV for ****ing 3D :o

Yeah well the downside is you are going to have a 3D ready HDTV, A 3D capable Blu-ray player, and of course AT LEAST one set of glasses.

But...the big upside to this which had a lot of people worried at first is that the technology is backwards compatible with 2D Blu-ray which is a big deal. So from what I gather Blu-ray releases will still be coming just as usual but the 3D will be an OPTION instead of the possible complete separate format which people were dreading so Blu-ray will not be obsolete anytime soon.

And yeah don't worry what you have now will satisfy you at least for a few more years because even if it is debuting next year it won't be affordable to upgrade for most.

Also I know there are already 3D capable HDTV's on the market. My dad has one in the living room it is a 60 inch Mitsubishi that claims to be 3D ready but it remains to be seen if the ones on the market now will even really be capable. Guess will we have to wait and see next year for every specific concerning this technology.

G.I. Joe Tops DVD and Blu-ray Charts
Paramount Home Entertainment's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which grossed $150.2 million in theaters, was the top DVD and Blu-ray Disc seller and rental in its debut week.

"G.I. Joe" sold 3.8 million discs in North America, 500,000 of them on Blu-ray.

The title marks the third-biggest title so far this year in first-week sales, behind Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Twilight.

Best Buy Ramps up BD Space, Promotion, Education
This holiday season, Best Buy Co. will allocate up to 30% of its entertainment retail space to BD, up from 10% last year, and move the BD software section up front. Consumer education on the benefits of Blu-ray and the product required is also a priority. Best Buy is also working with two studios to test new store patterns.

In 13 “movie test stores” in Los Angeles and Chicago, retail representatives from Fox and Universal have created standalone kiosks and product placements showcasing BD new releases, surrounded by catalog titles. “The customer has to walk through the catalog titles to get to the new releases,” said Diane Sherwood, market director for movies. The idea is to help customers find the titles they're interested in, in addition to getting them to “interact” with catalog product.

Best Buy has instituted a policy that lets consumers unable to find a Blu-ray title to order it, and it will be shipped to them for free.

“Our focus this holiday season is definitely Blu-ray and stepping customers up to [the format],” Sherwood said. “We are definitely driving the industry in Blu-ray promotions.” Best Buy stores have implemented genre-specific Blu-ray sections, in addition to carrying budget-priced Blu-ray titles selling for as little as $10.

Sherwood said the traditional in-store Blu-ray content playing on TV displays has been altered to emphasize that the HDTV experience can be replicated in movies. In addition, home theater departments feature BD end-caps highlighting the steps and product required to experience HD movies in the home.

“It's not enough to just call out the Blu-ray logo and say that it's a premium product,” Sherwood said. “We need to land what the customer is asking for and solve their problems. It is really about making it an end-to-end experience.”

Fox Blu-ray Titles for January and February Revealed
The Digital Bits has revealed the slate of titles that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment intends to release on Blu-ray in early 2010. New releases 'Post Grad' and 'Whip It' will street on January 12 and 26 respectively, while catalog titles 'The Last King of Scotland' and 'Walk the Line' will come out on BD on February 2.

MGM's 'To Live and Die in L.A.', originally scheduled for release in 2009 but later delayed, is also coming soon.

District 9 Blu-ray Lands a Week Earlier
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has moved forward the release date of the BD of this year's science fiction sleeper hit, 'District 9', which will now hit store shelves on December 22, in time for Christmas shopping. Disc specifications and special features remain unchanged from those initially announced.

In other news, 'District 9' recently followed the trend of other new releases and dropped in price on Amazon.com to $19.99.

MGM Library up for Sale
According to Variety, MGM is expected to essentially be auctioned off within the next few weeks. Its library would be acquired by a major studio; another party would buy the roaring lion logo; and yet another would buy the United Artists film studio. MGM's financial problems have been in the spotlight since the summer, and as of September was said to be teetering on bankruptcy.

One candidate mentioned for purchase of the MGM library is Time Warner, which already controls its classic catalog through a 1996 merger with Turner Broadcasting System, which had purchased MGM's catalog in 1986.

Thus, as film site Film School Rejects details, what's on the market consists of many of the titles MGM made after 1986, most of the post-1952 UA catalog, post-1981 Orion Pictures titles, and several minor catalogs.

In 2009, MGM has only had one film to release in theaters – the 'Fame' remake, which is anticipated on Blu-ray for January 2010 but hasn't been officially announced yet.

As of August 18, 2009, MGM ownership is as follows: Providence Equity Partners (29%), TPG (21%), Sony Corporation of America (20%), Comcast (20%), DLJ Merchant Banking Partners (7%) and Quadrangle Group (3%).
