So you don't see nothing wrong with them wanting you to buy the dvd's right away, instead of renting them?

So that means if you wanna see a new release movie you gotta fork over the cash to buy the dvds or wait 28 days later to rent it.

Thats gonna drive people away, I assure you. And cause people to download even more then they do. If some people wanna see it right now they will.

First WB puts out the bare bones dvds and now this. Great job WB!:whatever:
Yes I don't see anything wrong with it. If I didn't see a movie and want to rent it, I'm willing to wait the extra month. I don't see any problem with studios wanting to maximize first month sales of their new releases.

And unlike Redbox, which just wants to sue, Netflix is more willing to negotiate with the film studios. And it is why Netflix is going to get more preferential treatment.

When I say download I mean Illegal download, where the studio gets the money. And I don't care about Netflix I don't use it. I'm just saying its pretty crappy for those who do.

To be honest it takes me so long to get through my Netflix queue anyway I probably won't notice the delay. It also gives me a chance to see the older movies on my queue I keep pushing back whenever I bump a new release to the top of the list. :oldrazz:

It used to be the other way around. When VHS was new you couldn't buy them for months after the release until the video stores were done getting the rental revenue out of them. Then the tapes would start showing up in stores.

Well the HDTV my dad bought is a Mitsubishi TV that is supposed to be 3D ready. So if the PS3 is upgradeable to a 3D player then all he would need is an adapter and the glasses to be ready to go I am assuming. So I might be able to experience and comment on 3DTV sometime this year.

Its technically impossible most of the HDTV's on the market just don't have the things it needs to make it possible. But your equipment is still gonna be good for a long time don't fret. It isn't like this push for 3D is going to hurt Blu-ray in fact it might even help it even more.

The 3d should be similar to the Real3d stuff they got at theaters. Also, while the PS3 can do 3d it won't be able to do 1080p 3d because HDMI 1.3 does not have the bandwidth for that.

Yeah I saw that and figured there would be some kind of tradeoff. But hey that would still be impressive and cheap to accomplish 3D. Like I said my dad has already got a 3D ready HDTV it is just a matter of how much the adapter will cost and the price on the glasses before I look any further into it. As much as I am not buying into Avatar being an amazing movie plotwise I definitely wanna check it out for the visuals at least and checking it out in 3D wouldn't hurt either.

I just saw it today. Story wise I give it a 7.75/10. It borrows heavily from story elements from Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves like others have mentioned, especially Pocahontas. The Na'vi are pretty much Native Americans. lol. The special/visual effects were seamless and amazing...the 3d was...disappointing. I've seen Up, Ice Age 3, Cloudy, and now Avatar in 3d and I would have to say Ice Age 3 was the most impressive for 3d. Avatar had its moments but mostly still looked 2d-ish and I started getting eye strain after 2 hours.

Honestly, I don't really see 3d being all that huge in the home. Probably at first but not in the long run. Personally, it's more of a novelty to me, and I think I'll just be happy with 2d...unless they can end up doing 3d without the glasses.

I still don't understand how the Terminator ride at Universal Studios still has the best 3d I've seen and that is over 10 years old. Not even the other 3d rides at Universal can touch it.

Also for the Pocahontas references, check out this thing, it's kind of funny...I'll put it in a spoiler window for those who don't want to be spoiled.

Completely agree about Avatar. Have you ever seen Mickey's Philharmagic in 3D at Disney World? It's even cooler than the Terminator 3D show at Universal. The screen wraps around the sides of the theater, so when the do the magic carpet stuff from Aladdin it feels like the whole theater is flying. It's amazing.

I picked up District 9 today. That God of War preview sticker is leaving that sticky crap on my slipcover, so I can't take it off. Hate when that happens. :cmad:

If you don't have a PS3 then you will need a new 3D Blu-ray player to play 3D Blu-ray's. Your player is still safe though. It isn't like the 3D Blu-ray's won't play in your Blu-ray player they will just you will only be able to view the 2D version as far as I know.

But you will need more than a new player for 3D. You will need a 3D HDTV, an HDMI cable that can handle the signal, and of course the 3D glasses.

Now keep in mind that just because I am posting this doesn't mean these titles are going to be released in the US for sure this year. But it might be a good indicator of what we can expect to come.

2010 Blu-ray Slate from Major Studios in France
The lack of Blu-ray title announcements at this year's CES, as had become customary in previous years, has been a disappointment for many enthusiasts. However, some foreign sites have already published the local Blu-ray release schedules, including titles from the major international studios. This may be a useful reference for what's coming up in 2010, with some reservations.

Here is a select list of upcoming catalog titles from Disney, Fox, MGM, Sony and Warner in France (published by ecranlarge.com), excluding movies already released or officially announced in the US.

April:

* Bad boys (Sony)
* Bad boys II (Sony)
* Borat (Fox)
* Kelly's Heroes (Warner)
* Lords of Dogtown (Sony)
* Where Eagles Dare (Warner)

May:

* Armageddon (Disney/Touchstone)
* Grand Prix (Warner)
* A Star Is Born (Warner)
* Thelma and Louise (MGM)

June:

* Absolute Power (Warner)
* Fistful of Dollars (MGM)
* For a Few Dollars More (MGM)
* Hang 'em High (MGM)
* The Magnificent Seven (MGM)
* Mutiny on the Bounty (1935 and 1962 versions) (Warner)
* Road to Perdition (Fox)
* The Rookie (Warner)
* Shrek (Dreamworks)
* Shrek 2 (Dreamworks)

July:

* Insomnia (Warner)
* Moonwalker (Warner)

October:

* The Exorcist (Warner)
* Forbidden Planet (Warner)
* Mars Attacks! (Warner)
* One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest – Ultimate Collector's Edition (Warner)

November:

* Excalibur (Warner)
* The Maltese Falcon (Warner)
* Three Kings (Warner)
* The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Warner)

December

* 2001, a Space Odyssey – Ultimate Collector's Edition (Warner)
* The Last of the Mohicans (Warner)

Note that even if a studio holds international rights to a movie, it may release it in different territories at different times. Also note that more titles may be announced, especially considering that (except with Warner) the above list only covers the first half of the year.

Anyone know of a good site that does Blu-Ray reviews where they let the buyer know if the transfer is that much better than the DVD release?

There are a number of films I want to buy on Blu-Ray that I already own on DVD but some of them aren't the hard core visual effects kind of films that would look great. They're just older films that could somewhat use a better transfer.

I know Blu-Ray is obviously better than DVD but some films I'm not sure if they can ever make it look that much better due to it's age or original quality.

Figs, your best bet is www.dvdfile.com

The first five bars indicate standard definition (DVD) quality and then when it goes beyond that it shows the HD quality.

Rumor: Armageddon and Tombstone on Blu-ray
Home cinema site The HD Room has gotten hold of cover art for the Blu-ray editions of two movies belonging to the Disney/Buena Vista catalog: 'Armageddon' and 'Tombstone'. Although that does not necessarily mean that either of these titles will be announced soon on Blu-ray, it is a good sign. No other edition details are known at this time.

I would definitly re-buy Tombstone for Blu-Ray. Especially when my DVD copy has a scratch that freezes the movie at a certain scene. Only thing that sucks is that I've noticed Blu-Ray releases are trying to double dip as well. A lot of times when a film comes to Blu-Ray that had some extended or director's cut on DVD, they won't release that version yet. :cmad:

I have the director's cut of Tombstone on DVD so if that's not the version released on Blu-Ray I guess I'll have to wait awhile.

I go to the first 2 as well. Definetly reccomend them. This is also another good site

James and the Giant Peach Blu-ray Coming Soon
A trailer has surfaced online promoting the upcoming release of the special edition Blu-ray of Henry Selick's animated movie 'James and the Giant Peach'. No other release details are given, other than the movie will be "restored and remastered". There is no specific release date either, but as it was produced by Tim Burton, it might tie in with the home video release of 'Alice in Wonderland'.

Buy Toy Story 1 and 2 on Blu-ray, Get $10 Off
Amazon is having a special offer for those who preorder 'Toy Story: Special Edition' and 'Toy Story 2: Special Edition' on Blu-ray simultaneously. If both items are added to the shopping cart, a $10 discount will be applied at checkout (no promotional code necessary). There is no information as to when this promotion will expire.

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Announcements/Warner_Brothers/Where_The_Wild_Things_Are_Blu-ray_Detailed/4066

Warner Brothers is preparing Spike Jonze's 'Where The Wild Things Are (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/2748/wherethewildthingsare.html)' for a Blu-ray release on March 2.

The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and the only supplements shared with the DVD release will be four webisodes: The Absurd Difficulty of Filming a Dog Running and Barking at the Same Time; The Big Prank; Vampire Attack; and The Kids Take Over the Picture.
Exclusive to the Blu-ray will be an animated short - Higglety Pigglety Pop (voiced by Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker), HBO First Look, and four more webisodes: Maurice and Spike; Max and Spike; The Records Family; and Carter Burwell.
The release will also include a DVD/Digital Copy.
Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $35.99.

Not sure what these webisodes are, but sounds like there'll be a decent amount of them. Thought I would post since I didn't see anything about it and this was one of favorite movies of '09

Catalog Blu-ray Wave from Lionsgate in April
Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced three catalog titles from the 1990s for release on April 6: the speculative military drama 'Flight of the Intruder', starring Willem Dafoe and Danny Glover; the erotic thriller 'Jade', starring David Caruso and Linda Fiorentino; and the sci-fi horror movie 'The Relic', starring Penelope Ann Miller and Tom Sizemore.

Okay I'm looking to buy a 40" HD TV.

Starting points for what to ask? What brands to look at? or do people even have suggestions for a good model TV

I bought a Samsung 32'' back in 2007 and 2 and a half years later Im still very satisified with my purchase. I recently bought a 23'' which is a smaller version of it and it looks just as great. I will only deal with Samsung now as I find their TVs to be of top quality and look amazing

Well if you are upgrading from a standard definition any HDTV should be an improvement. Look for a 1080P model. If you don't have a ton of money to spend you can get a basic featured HDTV in the $600-$700 range from different companies that is in the 40 inch range.

Here is some options for an HDTV that is in the 40-49 inch range.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_abn_pp?ie=UTF8&rh=n%3A979929011%2C%3A%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A550061011%2C%3A%2Cp_n_size_browse-bin%3A1232882011

I highly suggest when you are looking for an HDTV though that you read the reviews for it. On Amazon.com just scroll down to the bottom to read reviews about what other buyers thought. It also all depends on what your budget is exactly.

If your looking for an LCD it's probably best to stick with the three S's as far as brands go. Samsung, Sony, Sharp.

LCD or Plasma which one is better

I would say LCDs. Theyve become the predominant type

Upscaling makes DVDs look better than they would normally look on an HDTV but they are NOT full HD. They wont look anywhere as good as a bluray but they do look better than had they not been upscaled.

You can only upscale the quality of a DVD so much. Think of it this way. The video on a DVD takes up what...like 4-7 GB's? The video on a Blu-ray takes up 15-30 GB's of space. It is basic logic...the bigger sized file is gonna be the better looking one. All upscaling does is make DVD's look the best they can with the amount of information that is available on the disc. The technology will never be able to match up with what a Blu-ray disc can offer.

And DVD upscaling has been around for quite some time now I am surprised you are just noticing it...haha.

Rumor: War of the Worlds Blu-ray in June
According to information posted at UK retailer HMV, Paramount Home Entertainment will release Steven Spielberg's 'War of the Worlds' on Blu-ray on June 14. No information on technical specifications or special features is available at this time. Note that this is unofficial until there is an announcement from the studio.

France: Family Movies on Blu-ray from Sony
The France branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed a very family-friendly Blu-ray slate for March: 'Jumanji' and 'Zathura: A Space Adventure' will come out on March 10; and on March 22, the studio will release 'Stuart Little' and 'Stuart Little 2'. No other release details are available.

why would you buy blu-ray films you already own on HD-DVD?

Don't tell me that melting code that destroys everything HD DVD past 2010 is real! I thought that was just a myth!

You don't have to. But you are thinking short term. What if your HD-DVD player craps out? Are you really going to go buy another used obsolete player? Also isn't it more convenient to have one player and one kind of format? Some Blu-ray re-releases also have lossless audio while the HD-DVD versions have lossy.

When I switched to Blu-ray I made a promise to myself: I would only rebuy the movies that I already have on HD DVD if I can get them under $10. Every movie I own on both formats are ones I've gotten on Blu-ray for $9.99 or under.

Anyone has a 7.1 Sound System? If u play DVDs with 5.1 on ur Blu ray player, is there a difference?

BatMatt

No, as the player should play the DVD in its native 5.1 surround sound

Yeah I pretty much answered this question when you asked about the upscaling...lol. The DVD's only have a certain amount of information on them so they can only look and sound so good. It is impossible for a Blu-ray player to expand a file size. If the DVD has 5.1 Dolby Digital that is all you can get on any player. Some receivers can take a 5.1 audio track and make it sound like its 7.1 but you can do that with a DVD player and a Blu-ray player.

Is there any word of releasing Hayao Miyazaki's other films on blu-ray besides Ponyo on March 2? They're re-releasing Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, and My Neighbor Totoro on DVD on March 2 to coincide with Ponyo, so I was wondering if they were going to appear on blu-ray.

I would like to see them, but I doubt they're popular enough for Disney to give them the blu treatment. Ponyo will get it since it's basically a standard for new releases, but I would say his other movies are pretty unlikely, unfortunately

I added WWII in HD from Netflix yesterday, but it's not in HD. I was hoping they would have them in Blu-Ray, but just standard DVD. How can you have something called WWII in HD when it's not in HD anymore?

Yes, 3D players will play 2D BD's and DVD's. Also, you can put in a 3D Blu-ray in regular Blu-ray player and it will play the 2D version of the movie.

I think that if they put the time and effort you could have higher quality glasses that aren't red/blue on you regular TV. And 3D HDTV would be a success because of it. Instead it will bomb because 3D HDTV requires you to buy a new TV, a new blu-ray player, a new cable/satellite receiver, new cables, glasses, etc.

Coraline's 3D was pretty much the same as Avatar's. And if Coraline could be done in 3D on my TV, Avatar can be done in 3D on my TV.

Huh? Coraline's Blu-ray release contained the crappy glasses. They are definitely going to re-release it for 3D HDTV. It may be expensive I agree and it could very well fail. But would you rather watch Coraline in 3D with the expensive glasses and recreating the theater experience? Or you want those cheapie glasses that **** up the entire color scheme to a movie? 3D HDTV is supposed to duplicate the theater experience in your home.

If they could have done the none red and blue glasses on your regular TV they would have done it but it isn't possible physically.

Same here. But more options are always good IMO. I am just relieved this 3D push will not affect Blu-ray. The only real reason I was against this 3D push in the first place was because I thought it might turn into another format war but it will co-exist with Blu-ray. Studios better keep that thinking in check. 3D should ALWAYS be optional...not the standard.

Hence why I think that if Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc. actually put in the time and effort they could develop quality glasses that work on all TVs, without the need for a new TV, cable/satellite receiver, blu-ray player, etc. while delivering the 3D theater experience at home. I think it can be done.

My use of Coraline as an example was that 3D can work at home with existing players and TVs. They just need to develop a little bit more than what they're pushing right now. Requiring people to buy new stuff when people have just bought HDTVs and blu-ray players is going to result in 3D HD to fail.

It can be done on existing equipment...with the ****** glasses. Current TV's just don't have the technology inside of them to pull it off. And it will be expensive for a lot of people yes. But from what I hear...

1. Some HDTV's on the market will be 3D capable already they will just need an adapter. The only downside would be is that the picture won't be full 1080p but the resolution would be cut in half so it would be a 540p picture. My dad happens to have one of these HDTV's so I will get back to you on that if I ever decide its worth the money to check it out.

2. The PS3 is SUPPOSED to be upgradeable to be a 3D Blu-ray player with a simple firmware update. But this is another wait and see.

3. From what I hear a lot of existing cable boxes will be able to handle 3D programming. But like earlier the image would be cut in half so it would be a 540i resolution if the picture is 1080i.

So for a person like me all I might need end up buying is a TV adapter and the glasses and I would be good to go. The only trade-off is that I would only be able to watch 540p 3D at best. And I would say there is a chunk of people in my similar position so who knows what exactly will happen. Only time will tell like the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray format war.

If you want the technology explained a bit more so you can understand it better you can check this article out.

It is arguably the best and most reliable Blu-ray player on the market for the price so I would recommend it even if it is just for Blu-ray watching. I haven't had one issue with my PS3 while playing a movie for the few years I have had it.

But it can be used for Blu-ray's, PS3 Games, DVD's, CD's, internet browser, store photos, music, and movies, talk to people, download games and movies, etc. etc. for just $299.99. And if it can include being a 3D Blu-ray player onto that list it just makes it even more awesome than it already is.

It will be 3D capable but remember it won't have full 1080p resolution when displaying 3D...the HDMI spec that the PS3 has just doesn't have the bandwidth needed for that.

But i wont advise someone to buy a PS3 if all they want is to watch Blu-ray.... i mean come on, its a gaming console...

Well, like Red said, the PS3 is a great Blu-ray player...but if a person is just going to watch Blu-ray's they could save half of the cost of a PS3 and get a good stand alone player. In addition to my PS3, I have a Panasonic BD-30 which has been just as good as the PS3 so far. So yeah, the PS3 is great but if you were to only watch Blu-ray's a good stand alone would be great as well...especially with some places selling brand name players for $100-150.

I read a few articles about the PS3 and 3D and in order to get full 1080p 3D you have to use the new 1.4 HDMI spec. The 1.3 HDMI spec does not have the bandwidth available to do that, which is why it will be in reduced resolution.

I think you will be just fine. Even though 3D HDTV is debuting this year it will be EXACTLY like when Blu-ray first debuted. High price, little content. I didn't get into Blu-ray until like a little over a year since the first player and Blu-ray's hit the market. Give it a year or two until they work out some of the kinks, prices, and content and then decide for yourself if it is worth it to you.

It will get 3d but not at full resolution due to it only having the 1.3 hdmi spec which doesn't have enough bandwidth to do 1080p 3d.

the ps3 can output 1080p at 60fps. since films are 24fps then it could output 2 frames for 3D each at 1080p.

No I would say that to experience Blu-ray now versus DVD is a much more enjoyable upgrade today than BD to BD 3D will ever be

Yeah, I was thinking the same both of you to be honest. I have my doubts about whether 3d in the home will take off to be honest, in a house there are a lot more things to factor in. I cant see 3D working on a summer day with the sun blaring through your window for example.

I just wanted the opinions of a few people who knew more than me and you guys have settled my doubts, thanks.

I believe you are right, although, doing this may limit the audio you can send on the same cable. I had read an article a few weeks back claiming the PS3 would output 3D at 1080i instead of 1080p due to bandwidth limitations. I would think as long as you have a 1.3a HDMI high speed cable then you would be good with the full resolution 3D...but lossless sound may have to suffer. If you look at the upcoming Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player it is going to have two HDMI outputs. One is 1.4 HDMI and the other 1.3a HDMI. The idea is to use the 1.4 HDMI output for 1080p 3D and the 1.3a HDMI for audio.

Also, if you use a receiver, it will have to be 1.3a compliant at the minimum and the cables to match.

Dude, you haven't seen a lot of movies. :oldrazz::funny:

I've seen a TON of movies, yet it seems like so many of the must-see classics I've somehow missed. Don't worry, though. I've preordered SPR. :)

And isn't this coming from the guy that was touting Spielberg as an HD-DVD exclusive at one point? :oldrazz:

Well yes. There are other movies of his that I'm big fans of, but most importantly I didn't have to have seen the movies to know how beloved they are and how much of a help it would've been to have his movies released on HD DVD.

Haha but yeah Ian you really need to play catch-up on some movies you are missing out on some masterpieces of film. But in a way I am jealous that you are seeing these films for the first time ever on Blu-ray.

yeah the sound might be a problem. not because of the bandwidth but because receivers don't know they can pass on the video to the TV if it's in 3D. hopefully the TVs will have a HDMI out for audio like that player does so they can take the stream then pass on the audio to a sound system.

the extra bandwidth of HDMI 1.4 is more for allowing 2k resolution. which requires twice as much bandwidth as 1080p 3D.

Well, from what I gathered, if you get a receiver with 1.4 HDMI, then you should be able to do sound/3d video with one cable. But, since the likelihood of average consumers going out and buying a new receiver on top of a new 3D display and 3D capable player (if they don't have one) is going to be next to nil.

Well Ian some personal favorites of mine on there which I am shocked you haven't seen yet.

Rocky, Good Will Hunting, Ed Wood, 12 Monkeys, Groundhog Day, Stand By Me, Million Dollar Baby, The Big Lebowski, Snatch, Platoon, The Sixth Sense, The Wrestler, Heat, Jaws (Dude what the hell you haven't seen Jaws?!!?), Unforgiven, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Elephant Man, Slumdog Millionaire, Gran Torino, Full Metal Jacket, Inglourious Basterds, Reservior Dogs, L.A. Confidential, The Pianist, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Saving Private Ryan, Taxi Driver, American History X, American Beauty, Leon, The Usual Suspects, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Goodfellas (Dude!), and Pulp Fiction (DUDE!!!).

Those are the main recommendations from that list for me. And to be honest I haven't seen my share of some of those on that list as well. I also am kinda shocked at some of the movies I am actually seeing on that list I think some of them are highly overrated. But in any event thats a pretty solid list from me and the good news is I would say a pretty big chunk of those are already on Blu-ray so you got plenty to get started on. :)

Armageddon' Blu-ray Detailed, Will Strike Earth SOONER!
The giant meteor is making a beeline to high-definition in April, instead of May. As previously reported, Disney/Buena Vista is preparing Michael Bay's guilty pleasure disaster flick 'Armageddon' starring an all-star cast including Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, and Billy Bob Thornton for Blu-ray release in May, but that date is now actually April 27.

The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and the only supplements revealed so far are Aerosmith's " I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" Music Video & Theatrical and Teaser Trailers.

Yep, and I CANNOT wait for Tombstone in May. That's been on the top of my BD hope list for like two years

Thats another great thing that has come from Blu-ray for me personally. It seems like whenever a new movie gets announced I learn more about it. I didn't know Kurt Russell was the one who actually directed most of Tombstone. :wow:

Murdoch: Avatar Blu-ray Release by June
At a News Corp. earnings call, CEO Rupert Murdoch said yesterday that James Cameron's sci-fi megablockbuster Avatar will be released on Blu-ray during the company's fiscal year, which ends June 30. However, the studio is in no hurry to put the movie on store shelves just yet. “We're not going to yank it out of theaters if it is doing $30 million a weekend,” News Corp. president Chase Carey said.

Tombstone' Blu-ray Detailed, Justice Is Coming SOONER!
High noon is coming to Blu-ray a week earlier than expected.

As previously reported, Disney/Buena Vista has revealed the classic western 'Tombstone' starring Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday is heading to high-definition in May, but that date is now April 27. The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and the only supplements revealed so far are: The Making of Tombstone, The Director's Original Storyboards, TV Spots, and Trailers.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.99.

More Universal Blu-ray Flippers: Out of Africa, The Jackal and Traffic
The January debut of Universal's Blu-ray + DVD flipper discs with the Bourne Trilogy films raised an interesting question. Would the studio stick with previously released titles on Blu-ray to move to the flipper format, or would it release films exclusively in high definition as flippers?

The answer, it turns out, is both.

The second wave of Universal Blu-ray + DVD flipper discs is due April 27 and will include Traffic, The Jackal, and Out of Africa: 25th Anniversary Edition, all with an SRP of $26.98. Traffic is an HD DVD holdover, but the other are new to Blu-ray which means anyone who wants them will have to add flipper discs to their collection.

All three films will be presented in their original aspect ratios with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The Jackal will not include D-BOX Motion Control support but the other two films will.

Bonus features for each title are as follows:

Traffic

* Deleted Scenes
* Inside Traffic
* My Scenes
* BD Live

The Jackal

* The Making of The Jackal
* Feature Commentary with Director Michael Caton-Jones
* Production Notes
* Cast and Filmmakers
* Theatrical Trailer
* BD Live
* My Scenes

Out of Africa: 25th Anniversary Edition

* Deleted Scenes
* A Song of Africa
* Theatrical Trailer
* My Scenes
* Feature Commentary with Director Sydney Pollack
* BD Live
* Production Notes (DVD side only)
* Cast and Filmmakers (DVD side only)

Universal Releasing Frank Herbert's Dune on Blu-ray
Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release the theatrical cut of Frank Herbert's Dune April 27 on Blu-ray Disc, completing the film's three-year journey from HD DVD to the prevailing high definition home video format.

Dune on Blu-ray will be presented in its original 2.35:1 1080p aspect ratio with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and D-BOX Motion Control support, the latter two exclusive to Blu-ray.

Bonus features are nearly identical to the HD DVD version with the exception of a photography gallery that appears to have been dropped.

* Deleted Scenes with an Introduction by Raffaella De Laurentiis
* Designing Dune
* Dune FX
* Dune Models & Miniatures
* Dune Wardrobe Design

Dune on Blu-ray will carry an SRP of $26.98. Amazon.com pre-order information and cover art are on the way.

Gangs of New York Blu-ray Gets Video Overhaul
Quietly, without any announcement or even a press release, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released yesterday a remastered Blu-ray edition of the Martin Scorsese movie Gangs of New York. Pending a full analysis, blu-ray.com reviewer Kenneth Brown confirms that this edition offers a "substantial improvement" in video quality over the 2008 release.

The remastered edition can be told from the first one by looking for the following:

* "Miramax award-winning collection" banner at the top
* Black frame around smaller cover picture
* "All-new digital restoration" sticker
* Audio options English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0

With regard to the video quality, a full review will be posted to the site soon. In the meantime, Kenneth Brown has sent the following advance preview:

The newly remastered release of Gangs of New York represents such a substantial improvement over the previously released Blu-ray misfire that filmfans and videophiles will be left with little to nothing to complain about. Everything about the transfer looks amazing, and all of the problems that plagued Disney's first release are nowhere to be found. Colors, contrast, black levels, and fine detail are all excellent, the presentation is free of digital anomalies, edge enhancement has been kept to a bare minimum, and the film looks fantastic.

Warner to Increase Blu-ray Releases in 2010
Yesterday during an earnings call, Time Warner Inc. CFO John Martin said that Warner Home Video would increase the number of titles released in 2010, especially on Blu-ray, compared to last year. Martin mentioned the continued growth of "higher margin of Blu-ray" as one of the factors that will offset the "somewhat challenged" DVD sales.

Sales of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Hangover were singled out as particularly strong. The filmed-entertainment unit reported fourth-quarter operating income of $436 million, up 61% from operating income of $271 million during the previous-year period. The results marked the seventh consecutive quarter of pre-tax earnings growth for the film segment.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes said that the company was hopeful that the sellthrough window agreed upon with Netflix "can provide an example of what can work in putting out rational windows".

Bewkes also said the studios would continue to tap into the catalog of characters from DC Comics for theatrical releases, direct-to-video titles and video games. Specific announcements will take place in the coming weeks.

Disney Blu-ray Classics Reshuffled, Including Dumbo
Ultimate Disney is informing that the Blu-ray release of Dumbo (slated for last Tuesday) won't be released on Blu-ray until February 2011. Reportedly, there won't be any classic animated Disney titles on BD in the first half of the year. Beauty and the Beast is still scheduled for October, and Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 are bumped from May to December. The Lion King is expected for October 2011.

Back in August 2009, Ultimate Disney had reported that Dumbo would be released on Blu-ray in February 2010. Then in November, it went up on the Disney site, with a release date of February 2. However, that date came and went without a formal announcement.

Well the pre-order on Amazon has the same cover as the theatrical version and they have the same runtime's listed so it is looking like the theatrical cut. But isn't the difference only a few minutes?

When I already have it on DVD and want to rebuy it for the better sound and picture I'm not going to downgrade to the theatrical version. I prefer a director's true vision when watching their films.

As for the don't hold your breath comment, it may not be right away but they will release it down the road. I don't plan on upgrading all my DVDs to Blu-Ray so it's not like I need that one right now.

I read a few articles about the PS3 and 3D and in order to get full 1080p 3D you have to use the new 1.4 HDMI spec. The 1.3 HDMI spec does not have the bandwidth available to do that, which is why it will be in reduced resolution.

Why is it that Component cables get a bad rap? They are 10 times more stable than an HDMI cable, and you dont have to keep worrying about new versions.

Because component cables only offer 1080i picture at best and you cannot get lossless audio from component cables...only through HDMI.

That is not true, component cables can carry 1080p.

Every HDMI cable I have bought, from the expensive ones to the cheap ones have had problems connecting to old HDMI ports and newer ones. Why can't they just pick a format and keep it the same? All this 1.3 and 1.4 crap is ridiculous. We shouldn't have to keep buying new cables and new TVs every 2 years just to keep up with some stupid wire specification.

As far as I know component cables have always only been able to do 720p/1080i at best unless I am unaware of something new on the market. And I know for a fact component cables can't handle lossless audio so no matter what HDMI = better than component. I am sorry you have had problems with your HDMI cables but I haven't had a single problem and I have bought a few. It isn't like they are that expensive anyways. Component has been on the market since forever and it can easily carry a 1080p signal all day long and component can give you the best audio quality with the proper connectors. The problem with Component is that companies can't make money off of it. Licenses governing BD-ROM A/V do NOT allow 1080p outputs on analog connectors. They like their HDMI because of its copyright protection features. This is quite silly as many will just find a way around it.

The problem is the CE companies are pushing HDMI and it is the ultimate standard and will continue to be so for many years. Another note is that Component cannot give you the best audio quality as far as lossless audio goes. The easiest way to get it is through HDMI as it is a single connection. You can use analog cables if your Blu-ray player and receiver have those connections, but honestly it is a pain as you would need 6 wires for 5.1 sound. It just makes sense to stick with HDMI.

Lionsgate keen to buy Miramax
Hollywood studio Lionsgate, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, is looking to buy Walt Disney's Miramax film unit, the New York Post said, citing sources inside or close to Lionsgate.

Lionsgate can not only afford Miramax, but could also be left unchallenged in its bid, as rivals may choose to pursue Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the bigger studio which is also struggling under $3.7 billion debt load, according to the paper.

Miramax was once a top art-house studio, and its library includes "Pulp Fiction," "Good Will Hunting," "No Country for Old Men," "Clerks" and "Shakespeare in Love."

In January, the New York Times reported that the film unit can fetch about $700 million.

Lionsgate could not be immediately reached for comment by Reuters outside of regular U.S. business hours.

It doesn't make any sense to stick with HDMI if you have to keep upgrading your cables every year when a new version is out because more and more is being pumped through it. Whenever the industry chooses a solid HDMI standard, I'll consider buying an HDMI cable again. When will it end? 1.4? 2.0? 3.0? Everytime you get the upgraded cable you have to make sure your TV supports it, and if it doesn't you have to find some firmware upgrade on your TV, and if there isn't any, you need to buy a new one. I'll stick with Component.

HDMI 1.3a will work for pretty much 99% of the time for anything regarding 1080p picture and lossless sound, even 3d (but possibly at a reduced resolution...as there really isn't any hard facts yet on HDMI 1.3a and 3d). HDMI 1.4 goes beyond HDMI 1.3a as far as being sure to send/receive a 1080p 3d signal and adds networking capabilities.

If you care about lossless audio at all, then HDMI is the only way to go.

Rumor: Remastered Gladiator Blu-ray Coming Up
The Digital Bits, quoting industry sources, is reporting that Paramount Home Entertainment, in cooperation with Universal Studios Home Entertainmment, will re-issue Gladiator on Blu-ray later this year, using a brand-new 1080p transfer that was just completed "a couple of months ago." Bill Hunt says this was done "after Paramount and Universal realized how bad the first one was, naturally."

Again according to the Bits' sources, the studio plans to schedule this Blu-ray rerelease for late summer or fall, to coincide with either the theatrical or (more probably) the home video release of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, and possibly labeled as a 10th Anniversary Edition.

There is no information as to whether there will be an exchange program for the first edition of this title. There is no information either of a rerelease in other territories.

They probably want to re-release it around the time Robin Hood is in theatres or when its coming to Blu-ray. And the current version didn't seem so terrible to me. Not spectacular at all but it seemed like an improvement over the DVD. A re-release with a fresh new transfer wouldn't hurt at all though a lot of people are wanting one. I also think an exchange program is silly. There is nothing technically wrong with the current version it just doesn't look as good as people wanted it too.

You can import it? I was only aware of a Region B Blu-ray that is a 1080i transfer that looks awful from what I hear. I know they are wanting to reboot The Crow so if that gets greenlighted then it could be quite some time before we see it on Blu-ray sadly. :(

Why would an exchange program be silly? They are obviously releasing a new version with a better transfer because the current one is not up to par and by releasing a new version so soon after their "Sapphire" release backs that up. Hence, a replacement program would be a nice gesture. Disney did it with Pirates and that only had like 5 minutes of somewhat cropped footage. It's like with Gang's of New York, which was way worse than the Gladiator situation, Disney should do a replacement program for that one.

If studios offered an exchange program for every re-release then they would be taking in a huge loss. A mediocre transfer shouldn't be an excuse for a free exchange...especially in the day and age where reviews are so readily available even before a disc is released. The Pirates situation was different that was an technical error on the disc. Sorry but I am on the studio's side when it comes to this.

The thing is that when the movie was released it seemed that there would not be a new release anytime soon considering it was labeled as an "elite" version of the film with the whole Sapphire moniker Paramount is using for the bigger films like Forrest Gump, Braveheart, and Gladiator. Therefore, that negates the whole review angle. Paramount should take a cue from Sony, as I believe they had a replacement program for The Fifth Element.

Actually it does matter...haha. I am putting it into perspective. There wasn't as many Blu-ray releases back then so the complaints were much louder and clearer and Sony couldn't risk pissing off people during the format war so they offered a disc exchange. Let us also point out that The Fifth Element is hardly a comparison to Gladiator in terms of how many people want it. People are willing to re-buy Gladiator....plan and simple and I guarantee the average joe Blu-ray buyer is not complaining about their current copy...the issue is for people that know better and who are on the lookout for things like DNR and such.

I am not fully backing up the studios on the issue. Should they just have released it right the first ****ing time? Absolutely. But I don't think think they should have to dig even deeper into their pockets just because the hardcore Blu-ray fanatics thought the first release was mediocre. They were fully aware with what they were getting thanks to reviews so they spent their money knowing what they were getting so they should bite the bullet.

I currently have The Punisher which was one of Lionsgate's early releases and it looks ****ing terrible compared to most of my Blu-ray's. But I don't expect them to offer an exchange program for it if they decide to re-release it with a better transfer.

Ah, so good old fashion debating. :oldrazz: This goes back to what I said previously. Yes, people read the reviews and bought the movie anyways, but the Sapphire release was supposed to be the only release for quite a while considering Paramount launched the Sapphire moniker for their bigger titles. I mean, if it would have been a standard release and then released again as a Sapphire title I could understand this, but this wasn't. Therefore, what choice did consumers have but to upgrade to the Sapphire release as it had looked like that would be the definitive release of Gladiator. Now, we will have another release in less than a year for a catalog title that supposedly got an "elite" release already. Even the quotes from Digital Bits claim that Paramount knows they screwed up on the transfer. Therefore, I say, they should own up and offer a replacement program.

I currently have The Punisher which was one of Lionsgate's early releases and it looks ****ing terrible compared to most of my Blu-ray's. But I don't expect them to offer an exchange program for it if they decide to re-release it with a better transfer.

There is a big difference with Gladiator and Punisher. It's been quite some time since The Punisher was released and it was one of the earlier titles, therefore if Lionsgate released a new version they would not be at fault for trying to rip off the consumer since it's been over 2-3 years since it was released and it was an earlier title. For Paramount, there is no excuse for Gladiator as it is a recent title which was released under a banner that marks it as a definitive release of the film and now less than a year from that release they want to re-release it with a spiffy new transfer because they have heard the complaining of the die hard fanatics and think they can make a quick buck off of them and not offer a replacement program.

I gonna take a middle ground on a replacement plan regarding Gladiator. On one hand, we as consumers should not expect a replacement plan.

But on the other hand, releasing a newer, better version of Gladiator less than a year after the Sapphire Edition that is being done mostly because Paramount knows how poor the transfer is, Paramount is morally obligated to at the very least offer the new version at a discounted price to previous owners of the film. Especially since Paramount is treating the Sapphire Series as their elite film collection.

Also, Paramount needs to drop the cut out the POC/bar code from the boxes of your damn movies and implement an exchange similar to Warner Bros. where all you have to do is send in the box of the movie and pay a small price for the upgrade.

Thank you! :awesome: lol. Seriously, even the film at a reduced cost would be fine by me. It just ticks me off that studios think they can get a way with these kinds of things.

This kind of thinking just let's studios continue to get away with these kinds of situations. Releasing a supposedly elite version of a film with mediocre/average picture quality and then releasing another version within less than a year with top quality picture quality just isn't right. Especially when the studio knows that they messed up. :cmad:

Agreed. If this was a game, there would be a 'patch' to fix this. If this was a CD and the quality was bad, there would be a simple exchange at the register. Since this is a silly Blu-Ray, you have to buy another one so the company gets a financial reward for *****ing up the first release.

I'm not gonna buy any new re-makes until they are actually re-mastered and not just ported to blu-ray for a quick buck.

Which is what I have been saying all along. You guys are getting all pissed off yet people were offering their comments on the disc and reviews were up before and right around the release and you obviously have the internet access to view those so take a little responsibility and be a smart shopper and take it as a lesson learned. I learned LONG ago to stop assuming that every Blu-ray is gonna be pure gold...gotta read reviews and opinions before you plunk down the cash guys. Don't assume something just because it has a spiffy edition title attached to it.

And once again from the screenshots I saw it didn't look THAT bad. I have seen A LOT worse Blu-rays than Gladiator. And the audio seemed to be a step-up from the DVD so I dunno its just kind of weird to see all this really high level of hatred.

There is a difference from your point-of-view to the situation at hand. Usually when a movie is ported over with lackluster picture quality it is not considered an elite release of the movie. The Sapphire moniker was supposed to represent critically acclaimed movies in the Paramount library to the bet quality available. Therefore, most thought that a new release would happen but not for at least a couple of years. So, it's the only release available and seemed to be that way for quite some time and therefore if you love the movie you buy it since it is a step up from the DVD. BUT, then Paramount realizes the complaints and offers a new version of the movie less than a year from the original release and so far is not inclined to provide those who bought the original release some way of getting a disc with top notch picture quality. See, it just presents the fact that they don't care about their consumers. Heck, I read that Universal did an exchange for some kind of box issues for Battlestar Galactica, why can't Paramount own up and do the same for Gladiator.

Also, keep in mind that according to The Digital Bits, a new transfer was completed because "Paramount and Universal realized how bad the first one was."

Agree to disagree. Already burnt out on the whole Gladiator thing so I am done talking about it just going in circles.

But WB still reigns supreme for me when it comes to douchebaggery with Blu-ray releases. Their most recent failure is releasing Grumpy Old Men on Blu-ray then a few months later announcing Grumpier Old Men would be on Blu-ray...but as a double feature disc with Grumpy Old Men. Seriously WB? You have got to be ****ing kidding me.
