Sony Details Lineup, Adds $200 3D Blu-ray Player
Today, Sony Electronics released the full details of its 2010 Blu-ray player lineup. In addition to the models BDP-S370 and BDP-S570, already announced at CES (see blu-ray.com, January 6), Sony is surprising everyone by launching the 3-D ready BDP-S470, which retails for only $199.99 and can be preordered now at the SonyStyle website.
3-D functionality will be added via a firmware upgrade, available this summer. The previously introduced BDP-S570 player, as well as the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 Blu-ray Disc home theater systems, will also be Blu-ray 3D capable. On the other hand, there is now no mention of the BDP-S770, which at CES was the only listed as 3-D compatible.
Disney Fast-Tracks Alice in Wonderland Blu-ray
Like the white rabbit, Walt Disney Studios is in a hurry – to release Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland on Blu-ray, and has handed exhibitors a "Drink me" bottle that will shrink the theatrical run of the movie to a mere 13 weeks, when the current average theatrical-to-home-video window of a movie in the US is 16 weeks. Exhibitors, in turn, want a bigger slice of the box office cake during that compressed window. If the parties reach an agreement, the BD release date could be set for early June.
Wizard of Oz Single-Disc Blu-ray Edition Goes Wide
Warner Home Video has announced The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Edition for release on Blu-ray on March 16. When Victor Fleming's classic was released on September 29, 2009, this single-disc edition was originally a retailer exclusive, available only at Wal-Mart. Now all bricks-and-mortar and Internet retailers will be able to stock it.

PS3 Getting 3D Update This Summer
Sony’s giving you yet another reason not to buy a standalone Blu-ray player.
Still using your PS3 as a Blu-ray player? Well this summer you’ll have even more reason not to pick up a standalone device as Sony will be upgrading the firmware to add 3D support.
John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, spoke up about the PS3’s 3D capabilities in an interview this week. “3D is a major part of our initiatives in 2010,” said Koller. “We’re currently developing 3D stereoscopic games to come in conjunction with the launch of Sony's 3D compatible BRAVIA LCD TV in summer 2010.”
In addition to the 3D games that will be launching, he talked a bit about a firmware update that should be hitting at right around the same time. No matter what model of Playstation 3 you own, you’ll be getting 3D content. Koller added, “All PS3 units that exist in homes and markets will be able to play 3D stereoscopic games as well as 3D BD movies through separate firmware upgrades.”
Koller also pointed out the flexibility of the Playstation platform, in that you could easily upgrade your 40GB unit to a full 1TB unit with a simple hard drive swap. He was a bit quieter on the subject of cloud storage, simply saying “We plan to continue providing PS3 users with options so… they’ll have the storage space to accommodate the way they want to use their system.”

In an interview yesterday, director James Cameron leaked the release date for what will be the first Blu-ray edition of his megablockbuster movie Avatar: it will be on Earth Day. “It's all right on schedule,” said Cameron. “We'll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that's our plan as of right now, and that'll be pretty much bare bones. And then we'll do a value-added DVD and a 3-D Blu-ray in I think November sometime.”
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment couldn't confirm the release date.
Cameron also said that with a wave of companies set to release 3-D compatible TVs, the time was right to issue his film in 3-D for the home viewer.

Alien Anthology Blu-ray for Christmas
A recent promotional Blu-ray flyer from 20th Century Fox prominently features H.R.Giger's creature jumping menacingly at the reader, atop the caption "Alien Anthology Coming to Blu-ray Christmas 2010." The specific use of the word "Anthology" raises the possibility that this BD collection could include not only the "Quadrilogy" movies, but also Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator Requiem.

Hey at least you got a date to look forward to now and already have something to put on your Xmas wishlist. I really don't like the possibility of them including the AVP movies though. If they do then I really hope they do individual releases because as much as I would like the Alien movies I really don't want to add the AVP movies to my collection.

I guess I am one of the few people that enjoyed Alien 3...well at least the director's cut. The 4th one I can even get into...even though I admit it is a weak entry into the series I still think it has enough cool moments where it gets a pass.
The AVP movies though yeesh...where do I begin? I must admit I never saw Requiem though but going by the reviews I have read it is almost universally hated so it sounds like I don't even need to see it to know it is garbage. But I did see AVP and it sucked balls...but I was going in against it just from it getting a PG-13 rating alone. Seriously...how the **** do you combine 2 R rated franchises into a PG-13 movie? That is just ridiculous! I could go on and on about the mistakes with AVP.

In an early announcement to retailers, it seems 20th Century Fox is working on 'Elektra: Director's Cut' based on the popular Marvel Comics' character for a high-definition release on May 4. Specs and supplements still haven't been revealed yet, but suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.99.
History of the World Part 1 Announced for Blu-ray
In another announcement to retailers, 20th Century Fox is planning to release 'History of the World Part 1' on Blu-ray on May 11. The title is currently available in high-definition as part of 'The Mel Brooks Collection.' Specs and supplements should be the same as the previously released version and suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $24.99.

Goodbye Analog – Hello DRM
Component makers will soon be discontinuing the use of component cables. It might not sound like a big deal, but what if your old Blu-rays won’t play through your existing setup? It may happen next January.
Digital rights management (DRM) is a really touchy subject for consumers. DRM is the reason you can’t use Zune Pass with an iPod. It’s the reason you can’t reinstall Spore more than twice, and it’s the reason video download services are more limiting than you’d expect. But in the past, it hasn’t really been a problem for Blu-ray discs.
Admittedly, Blu-rays have some pretty strong copy protection, but there’s nothing that stops you from watching a disc you own.
Starting at the end of this year, no new hardware will be introduced that offers alternate HD outputs. If the signal going out is 720p or higher, it’ll be HDMI or bust. That doesn’t sound too bad initially. Some connections get phased out over time. It happens. The problem isn’t the new products though. It’s the old ones. Starting January 1st, companies will be able to put something called an Image Constraint Token into their Blu-ray players. Coding this into a Blu-ray disc means that HD video will only be able to be sent out using HDMI. Your component outputs will be rendered useless. Anyone with a component video setup currently may have to change accordingly. At the least, it will mean buying a new cable. At the most, it could mean a whole new wiring job for those with custom home theater installations, and even new components. Of course, a company would have to embed the token to make this happen. There’s still no word on which makers will be adopting this technology.

Alien 3 is okay, at the very least it's interesting, but I hate the way they killed off everyone else. I didn't like Resurrection much outside some nice scenes, Weaver and Pearlman. If they only offered those in a pack, I would probably upgrade. If they offer them separate, I'll probably stick with the first two. Then might get the last two at discounted prices.
Though, yeah, I agree. AVP's about as bad it gets.

Fox always screws up somehow on their comic book franchises. But let's be honest while the director's cut of Daredevil was much better than the theatrical cut it is miles from being an amazing comic book film. Mark Steven Johnson is a mediocre director at best. As for Elektra it just falls into the already filled category of female superhero movies just sucking. I think a lot of it has to do with studios being afraid to take risks on how they portray them on screen so their sensitivity usually ends up translating to this generic female superhero that we just don't care about.
I mean even look at the X-Men franchise. 3 badass female superheroes Storm, Jean Grey/Phoenix, and Rogue basically got screwed over on every level of being badass. Storm was supposed to be a powerful goddess type, Phoenix...do I really even need to say how they screwed up???, and they turned Rogue into nothing but a wimpy whiny damsel in distress.
I think studios need to grow some balls and take some inspiration from some female hero characters of past films for example Sarah Connor from T2 or Ripley from Aliens...it can be done but studios want a "safe" portrayal of female comic book characters.

Fox Says No 3D Avatar Blu-ray in November
James Cameron caused quite a stir when he said to the Wall Street Journal that Avatar would come out on Blu-ray in April in a "barebones" release and then in November in a 3D edition. On Thursday night, a spokesman for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment notified the WSJ: "3D is in the conceptual stage and Avatar will not be out on 3D Blu-ray in November."
Of course, when putting in context the bold claim that "3D is in the conceptual stage," the following known facts are worth considering:
1. In December, the Blu-ray Disc Association (of which Fox is a board member) announced that it had finalized the Blu-ray 3D specification.
2. The 3D part of the HDMI 1.4 specification has already been adopted and made public.
3. At CES, 3D Blu-ray players were announced by Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba. Most of them have also announced 3D displays.
4. This year, the PS3 is reportedly getting a firmware upgrade enabling 3D Blu-ray playback.
5. Blu-ray 3D authoring is already operational at Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory
6. Disney, Dreamworks and Sony have already announced they will release 3D titles during 2010.

Sony to Distribute Weinstein Titles on Blu-ray
Independent studio The Weinstein Company, which is in the middle of a restructuring process, has finalized a new home video distribution deal with the worldwide acquisitions unit of Sony Pictures, according to which TWC and Dimension titles will release through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The Sony deal is envisioned as long-term, in batches of 9 to 10 films.
The first movies under this arrangement are Rob Marshall's Nine, A Single Man, The Road, Youth in Revolt, Halloween, Piranha 3-D, Nowhere Boy, Hoodwinked 2 and Blue Valentine. However, note that not all of these titles will necessarily get a high-definition release.
Weinstein content used to be distributed by Genius Products, of which TWC was the majority shareholder. The home entertainment distribution operations of Genius were sold to Vivendi Entertainment in September 2009. Afterwards, Weinstein property has been released by different distributors: Quentin Tarantino Inglourious Basterds was released on DVD and Blu-ray by Universal, and Rob Zombie's Halloween II, by Sony.
In related news, Outlander (a TWC title released on DVD in 2009 with no accompanying Blu-ray edition) will finally hit Blu-ray Stateside on May 18, released by Vivendi.

Ripley and Sarah Conner both were the stars of their respective movies and played major (if not leading roles) in their Sci-Fi sequels. Maybe the next X-men movies will try to balance this instead of just focusing on Wolverine.

Ripley and Sarah Conner both were the stars of their respective movies and played major (if not leading roles) in their Sci-Fi sequels. Maybe the next X-men movies will try to balance this instead of just focusing on Wolverine.
Huh? I am not comparing X-Men to Ripley or Sarah Connor I was simply saying that these comic book films hardly give these female characters any balls like other movies have done successfully. In comic book movies they are very cookie cutter like we have seen this before and we are not impressed.
The female characters were just one of the many problems with the X-Men franchise. I really am surprised I enjoyed X-Men with all the things in consideration. Wolverine was fine being the lead character so to speak but Fox cares so much about keeping summer blockbusters under 2 hours that it was guaranteed some characters were going to get screwed over. Like I said Wolverine could have stayed out in front if only the movie had been an extra 20-30 minutes longer to flesh out the other characters.

Are there any plans for a trilogy set for Toy Story? I know the first two are coming out this month, but assuming Toy Story 3 will be out by Christmas, I'm curious if they have any box set plans. If they do, I may wait for that instead.

June is Month of Eastwood on Blu-ray
On May 31, veteran actor and director Clint Eastwood will turn 80. To celebrate it, the following day Warner Home Video will release a slew of Eastwood movies on Blu-ray, including two box sets (the ten-film Clint Eastwood Collection, and the Essential Eastwood: Director's Collection), two more Eastwood double features (Where Eagles Dare / Kelly's Heroes and The Enforcer / Sudden Impact) and three individual Blu-rays (Absolute Power, Heartbreak Ridge and The Rookie). Finally, Eastwood's latest movie, Invictus, is also expected around that time, although it hasn't been officially announced yet.
The titles included in the Clint Eastwood Collection are: Absolute Power, Dirty Harry, Gran Torino, Kelly's Heroes, Letters from Iwo Jima, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, The Rookie, Unforgiven and Where Eagles Dare.
The Essential Eastwood: Director's Collection, in turn, consists of Letters from Iwo Jima, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River and Unforgiven.

Lord of the Rings Blu-ray Ditches Dolby, Goes 6.1
Warner Home Video has uploaded the final back cover picture for The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy, which comes out on Blu-ray in a month, and a significant change in the audio specs has taken place: while initially audio was listed as Dolby TrueHD 5.1, now it's DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1.
The Notebook Gets Regular Edition Blu-ray
Blu-ray enthusiasts for whom gift sets are just cumbersome boxes and collectibles mere trinkets will be glad to hear that Warner Home Video will release the New Line title The Notebook in a regular Blu-ray edition on May 4. In January 2009, this movie had been released in a Limited Edition Gift Set, which, according to the blu-ray.com review, was "terribly impractical", although it "should make more than a few ladies grin".
Special features on this regular edition consist of:
* Audio commentaries:
o Director Nick Cassavetes
o Novelist Nicholas Sparks
* Deleted scenes
* Featurettes:
o All in the Family
o Southern Exposure

The 35 Anniversary was THIS year but Universal has said they would rather release it next year. But its not a long wait considering that there is a lot of titles that don't even have a rumored date yet.

If you pre-order Armageddon and Tombstone together on Amazon you get them for $32.98 shipped.
I think Armageddon just dropped a buck so this should now be $31.98. Make sure your order reflects the price.

Rumor: Branagh's Hamlet Coming Soon on Blu-ray
When Warner Home Video announced the release on Blu-ray of the recent BBC production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet (see blu-ray.com, February 16), we lamented that the full-text 1996 version starring and directed by Kenneth Branagh wasn't coming out on Blu-ray. Now it seems that WHV has addressed those concerns, as Branagh's Hamlet has just gone up for preorder, complete with rather official-looking cover art.

Well if it says director's cut, then I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Plus, the director's cut is the only version on Bu-ray.

Acer Launches 3D Ready 720p Projector
The latest release from Acer offers the potential for a 3D experience and a high def picture, all at a reasonable price.
Projectors are a great way to get that theatrical experience at home. Acer’s H5360 is a great example. It’s a slick projector that does just enough to be useful, but not so much that it’ll break the bank. The Acer H5360 is a 3D ready projector designed to be used with NVidia’s 3D Vision. It’s got an impressive brightness rating of 2500 ANSI lumens and a contrast ratio of 3,000:1. The H5360 has a native 720p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio.
It’s got an HDMI input of course, as well as jacks for component, composite and S-video signals and a VGA input. It sports a 3x color wheel design, and aims to recreate colors accurately thanks to Acer’s own ColorBoostII+ technology.
You can pick up the H5360 now for $699.

Friedkin Flaunts Control over Exorcist Blu-ray, Says No to 3D
In a recent interview, William Friedkin was asked about the possibility that Warner Brothers decided to convert The Exorcist to 3D. Friedkin said that would never happen, "providing I'm still alive." He stated that he has control "over every single frame of film" when converting it to Blu-ray. "If I want a scene bluer, I get that scene bluer," he added.
Friedkin confirmed that the Blu-ray of The Exorcist is coming out this fall. A rerelease in IMAX theaters is also being considered, although "nothing is certain yet."

G.I. Joe: The Movie Planned for Blu-ray
The nostalgic animated hit from the eighties could be coming to Blu-ray in the very near future. According to a recent tweet from Shout! Factory's DVD producer Brian Ward, the animated 1987 'G.I. Joe: The Movie' is in the works for a high-definition release.
:wow: Awesome. Although the movie was very bad story wise. it had some of the best GI Joe animation ever. Now where is 1986's Transformers The Movie???

War of the Worlds Blu-ray Dated and Detailed
Between April and June, Paramount Home Entertainment is releasing three Steven Spielberg movies on Blu-ray, one each month. On June 1, the studio will release War of the Worlds, the modern retelling of H.G. Wells's science-fiction novella starring Tom Cruise. Technical specifications have not been released yet. The BD carries over all the contents from the two-disc limited edition DVD.
Can anyone tell me which releases these are? I think one of them is Saving Private Ryan right? Which is the other?

Minority Report - April 20th
Saving Private Ryan - May 4th
War of the Worlds - June 1st
Hopefully one of the months this year will be the Indiana Jones Boxset. :) Also wouldn't mind seeing them release The Terminal. I was actually just thinking about that movie the other day.

Ah cheers, so more of his modern films then. I actually quite like all 3 of those films, but, for my money atleast, he'll never be able to top Raiders and Jaws.
I'd love there to be an Indy boxset, even though I know it will include the abhorable 4th film.

Well Paramount only has the rights to so many. Films like Jurassic Park, Jaws, E.T...are all Universal's to release.

Panasonic’s 3Ds Launch Wednesday – At Half the Japanese Price
If you thought 3D TVs were going to be exceedingly costly, you’re in for a surprise.
“3D is going to be so expensive!” say the format’s detractors. Panasonic’s taken a bit of wind out of that argument though, since their new 3D televisions are set to release at a price that can only be described as reasonable.
The Japanese launch of Panasonic’s new sets was expected to reflect the price seen on the US market, but the company has us surprised. Their 50” VT25 plasma will be sold for $2,500. As a kit with 3D glasses and a 3D Blu-ray player it’ll run right around $3,000. Presumably, this also means we’ll start seeing Panasonic’s 3D BD players hitting shelves this week too.
The new sets will start showing up in Best Buy stores on Wednesday, with over 1,000 stores in the US getting them in the long run. There’s no information as to what they’ll be showing on the screens, but I’d be willing to bet on blue aliens.
Three grand isn’t exactly chump change, but it’s a far cry from the tens of thousands for early plasmas, and it’s safely in the ‘normal’ range for a brand new television. It may not be enough to sway anyone into the 3D camp, but the unexpected price point could mean good things for the format.

Reports of Compromised CC Information at Monoprice
Popular audio/video cable retailer Monoprice has temporarily closed its website until March 15 while it performs "maintenance." The website doesn't go into further detail, but it allegedly shuttered after receiving several emails and phone calls from customers complaining about "odd" charges on the credit and debit cards they had used when purchasing from Monoprice. Customers are advised to watch their credit card statements very closely.
All Shrek Movies on 3D Blu-ray in 2010, Exclusive with Samsung for One Year
DreamWorks Animation announced yesterday the expansion of its strategic alliance with Samsung (see blu-ray.com, January 6), to feature an exclusive offering of the Shrek 3D film series in its entirety in 3D for the first time ever. This Blu-ray collection will be available during the second half of the year. The news was delivered at Samsung's Full HD 3D LED TV global launch press conference held in New York City.
In an interview with USA Today, Jeffrey Katzenberg confirmed that "you can't buy the Blu-ray 3D version of Monsters vs. Aliens or Shrek," and added: "They're exclusive to Samsung for a year."

Sony Signs Up Studios for HD Movies on the PlayStation Network
Digital distribution of movies from 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros hits PSN this week.
Since it has Blu-ray functionality built right in, streaming video didn’t seem all that important on the PS3 at the first onset. Adding Netflix was a great start, and now Sony’s signed up the big six movie studios for digital releases on their network. New releases today include 'Jennifer’s Body,' 'Up,' 'Star Trek,' 'District 9,' 'Zombieland,' 'Inglourious Basterds,' 'The Hangover,' and 'The Wizard of Oz.' All these new releases are in high definition, and are available for rental or for purchase.
Download pricing is only $14.99. Of course, if you’re picky about your video and audio, Blu-ray will still give you the best of both.
I was wondering what some of you prefer when it comes to 60 and 120 megahertz on your TVs?
My manager and I went to Best Buy at lunch a few days back and when we were watching some of the TV programs and movies on a 120 megahertz television it looked really weird. Like it was almost too smooth to where people in the background looked like someone increased their speed.
I just wanted to know which was better. When I get a better and much larger HD TV I think I'm going to go with 60 megahertz.

Personally, I can't stand the soap opera effect you get with the motion enhancers turned to on with 120 megahertz TV's. But, you should have the option to have it turned off. So, it shouldn't matter which TV you get as their should be an option to disable the effect.

Well here is my take on it. I have a projector that has this feature. But it is not a simple on and off. There is 3 different settings...low, medium, and high. The setting yes looks absolutely awful IMO. But I think the low setting can make things look different in a good way (not necessarily film but animation and HD camera type movies like Cloverfield.) The medium setting is pretty much a little bit of both good and bad.
Is it necessary feature to have? Nah I wouldn't say that. Can it be a fun extra feature if you want a different way to view your movies? Yep.

Cameron Talks Avatar Redux, 3D, Titanic, Abyss/True Lies Blu-ray
In an interview with USA Today, James Cameron revealed that Fox is considering a theatrical rerelease of Avatar in the fall, possibly in an extended cut. This might affect the 3D Blu-ray release of the movie, although Cameron is still hoping for a fall street date. The Canadian filmmaker is highly enthusiastic about 3D, but he also warned the industry against the temptation to "put bad 3D in the marketplace." He is okay with converting 2D content to 3D but only "if it's done well" and preferably "driven by the artist." Indeed, he intends to convert Titanic to 3D for a theatrical rerelease in 2012. He also expects to start working soon on the Blu-ray release of The Abyss and True Lies.
NeverEnding Story Director Wasn't Told about Blu-ray
When 1980s fan favorite The NeverEnding Story came out on Blu-ray last March 2, extras were conspicuously absent from the disc- not even a trailer. It turns out that Warner Home Video never contacted director Wolfgang Petersen to let him know about the upcoming BD release, let alone ask for his input with special features or remastering.
"I didn't even know!" admits Petersen, in an interview with MTV News. "Sometimes the studios are…it's just unbelievable," added Petersen, seemingly at a loss for words. "I would have loved to get involved and work on the colors a little bit, let's do this and let's do that. They didn't tell me. It's strange."
The German-born filmmaker wasn't even sent a complimentary copy of the Blu-ray and had to send his assistant to buy one for him. "I have a beautiful theater at home and I can screen it there. I have not seen it yet in Blu-ray, and I have family here from Germany, [so] we really are looking forward to seeing it again. It's been a long time since I've seen it. I'm so anxious to see how it looks on Blu-ray."

Well see it can be a double edged sword. WB is a studio that likes to get Blu-ray releases out fast and furious. If they wanted a director's approval and insight on every Blu-ray release it would be more costly and time consuming for them so the Blu-ray releases would definitely slow down.

That sucks what happened to Wolfgang. I think I'll wait on that one in case they double dip down the road with extras and hopefully his commentary.

The Pacific Blu-ray Release in Time for Father's Day
Posted March 15, 2010 04:49 AM by Juan Calonge (http://forum.blu-ray.com/member.php?u=1313)
During the Atlanta premiere (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2-fl7_d6z0) of the HBO ten-part "miniseries event" The Pacific (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Pacific-Blu-ray/10488/), it was announced that it will be available for purchase on Father's Day weekend, which probably means a release date of June 15, a mere month after the last episode airs. Although only DVD was explicitly mentioned in the announcement, it clearly will come out in high-def as well, as the HBO website already features DVD (http://store.hbo.com/detail.php?p=256023&v=hbo_shows_the-pacific) and Blu-ray (http://store.hbo.com/detail.php?p=256535&v=hbo_shows_the-pacific) versions. No other release details are available at this early stage.
The Pacific was produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman, like the Emmy-winning miniseries Band of Brothers (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Band-of-Brothers-Blu-ray/1151/). It aims to deliver a realistic portrait of WWII's Pacific Theatre as lived by three US Marines, from Guadalcanal to Peleliu to Okinawa. It is based on two books by USMC veterans: With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge and Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie.

Caddyshack Blu-ray coming June 8th
Warner Home Video has officially announced the Blu-ray Disc debut of Caddyshack on 6/8 (SRP $24.98), just in time for the film's 30th Anniversary. The film had been previously released in HD-DVD, and has long been available on DVD. The new edition will include all the special features from the previous editions, along with the all-new Caddyshack: The 19th Hole documentary, as well as the film's theatrical trailer. From the press release, the 37-minute doc will include "featuring hilarious outtakes, rare footage and interviews with stars Chevy Chase and Cindy Morgan, producers Jon Peters and Mark Canton, and director Harold Ramis, along with other cast and creative team members recalling their on-set experiences."

I went to Best Buy and was looking for a DVD case and they were pretty damn expensive. I have about 200 DVD's and about dozen Blu-Rays and the cases that would fit my collection and accomodate more, ranged from $89-$189.

Avatar Blu-ray Officially Announced
After weeks of speculation and rumors, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced Avatar on Blu-ray. As James Cameron himself revealed a month ago (see blu-ray.com, February 18), the release date has been set for Thursday, April 22 (Earth Day). In a first for a major theatrical release on Blu-ray, the studio will go Superbit on James Cameron's megablockbuster and release it without any special features of any sort, in order to maximize audio and video quality. A DVD will be included with the BD.
Avatar producer Jon Landau explained to the Los Angeles Times that they told Fox that "we wanted to do something really special and reach for the best presentation of any film in the history of the format." Landau adds, "Everything that is put on a disc takes up room – the menus, the extras, the trailers and studio promotions – and we got rid of all of that so we could give this movie the best picture and sound possible." Extra time and care have been devoted to this project, with the video compression sessions taking six weeks, as opposed to the usual two weeks for a typical theatrical release.
A multidisc "ultimate version" Blu-ray is planned for November. Details will be given during a press event in March 23, which will be attended by Landau and Cameron.
Regarding a 3D release, Fox sources again denied reports that it would come out later this year. The Digital Bits hazards a guess that it will probably come "in a third dip a year or two from now", once there is a market for 3D on Blu-ray.

But I have been testing out some of my DVDs to check out the upconversion, and "Revenge of the Sith" looks great on my Blu-ray player.

That excuse they use is complete BS. Adding a second disc that has all the extras it deserves would do NOTHING to damper the bitstream of the feature disc.
They're milking the people for money, and that's the only excuse.
Exactly, this is just an attempt to get the masses to double dip and then eventually triple dip with a 3D release down the line.

Avatar Blu-ray Detailed, Gets 1.78:1 Video
Release details have begun to surface regarding the upcoming Blu-ray edition of Avatar, which was announced yesterday. Not regarding the special features (as there will be none), but the audio and video presentation. An interesting development is that the feature aspect ratio of this edition will be 1.78:1, as seen in most 3D theatrical projections.
Audio will be presented in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio for the original soundtrack only. Localized dub tracks will be encoded in lossy audio (DTS or Dolby Digital, depending on the territory). Finally, MSRP has been set at $39.99. Most web retailers already have it up for preorder.
Flash Gordon attacks Blu-ray in June
Universal has announced for June alongside Darkman the 1980 space-opera Flash Gordon, adapted from the classic 1930s comic strip and serials will hit Blu-ray on June 15th.
Flash Gordon:
* Alex Ross, renowned comic artist, on Flash Gordon
* Writing a Classic: Screenwriter Lorenzo Semple, Jr.
* First episode of the Flash Gordon 1936 serial
* My Scenes

Just got Terminator 2, Beowulf, Ghost Rider, Zombieland all on blu-ray, Star Trek First Contact is on the way as well as it isnt out here on BD until Monday.
My collection is slowly increasing. I have to say, the Beowulf BD is possible the most impressive I have seen yet, could definately tell the difference from DVD, the detail was stunning.

I am not all into this Avatar hype and really don't care about the whole triple dip thing but you can complain all you want because this complicated 3D/2D/IMAX/Different aspect ratio releases are ALWAYS going to piss off some group of people. The Dark Knight was already proof of that.
I do find it funny the spin Fox is trying to put on their triple dip plan. They are claiming they are leaving out special features and extras to "maximize quality". Ummmm so what is going to be their excuse when the 2nd release looks virtually identical to the 1st one? I wonder if people would have more respect for the studios were at least honest. "Listen...this movie made a ****load of money at the box office it would really be stupid for us to blow our load on the 1st release. You guys will get more and more with each release and you will have to wait a while but it is what is best for our company financially".

Yep well while mainly I am a live action fan I have to say animated films usually show what Blu-ray is all about and has to offer in terms of quality over a DVD. I wasn't planning on picking up Toy Story but after I read the review and saw the screen caps for it over at DVDBeaver I might have to put it on my wantlist.

I'm definitely not an Avatar fanatic and don't really care what aspect ratio the movie is in, but I just thought it was funny how Cameron talks about 2D movies looking better in scope yet the 2D version of Avatar (which was shown in scope, heck my 3D viewing of the movie was in scope) is going to be 1.78:1. Just thought that was funny, but at least this is not a Dark Knight situation, since the whole film will maintain one aspect ratio. :p
And yes, this is the most blatant double dipping a company has ever done. I think we will see a boatload of different releases for this film in the years to come. Bare Bones Edition (2D), Special Edition (2D), 3D Bare Bones Edition, 3D Special Edition, 3D Collector's Edition, 3D Ultimate Extended Director's Cut...etc.

Now, slightly off-topic, I can't wait for Paramount to finally announce the new Gladiator release. I think I sold mine so I'm anticipating getting the corrected copy so I can finally watch it! *sighs*

I have seen some excellent pictures in live action on BD, but Beowulf was just something else, when you can see stubble on an animated character and hairs on their arm its just crazy, in a good way of course.

Actually there is 3 separate Blu-ray releases already if you count the Limited Edition Endoskull edtion.
For DVD I am pretty sure there was at least 5 different releases.
Then there was the laserdisc.
Don't forget the 5 or 6 VHS versions along with a D-VHS version.
And if you really wanna get picky it was also released in Europe on HD-DVD...so I think T2 has practically been on every single format since its release. Missed the boat on a Betamax version though. :oldrazz:
And that is just the standalone releases...not going into how many times its probably been bundled together with another movie(s). :oldrazz:
I also think that once studios start pushing 3D more and more and start converting old movies into 3D Terminator 2 will be at the top of the list of candidates for a 3D conversion so that probably means yet ANOTHER release for T2 on 3D Blu-ray.

If you have the money I highly recommend you invest into a surround sound system where you can take advantage of the lossless audio on Blu-ray's. I think especially for Star Trek and Watchmen the audio on those discs are an amazing experience.

Also remember that you get $10 off automatically at most retailers, so a great deal can be had here. I know using the automatic discount of $10 and then these two $10 coupons, you can get these films for $16 plus tax out the door at Target, and like $14 plus tax out the door at Toy's R' Us.

Even Octopuses Prefer HDTV
Most humans have been aware of the enhanced picture quality of high definition television for a while now, but based on recent testing, is seems octopuses are hip to the benefits as well. Octopuses seem to be fairly intelligent animals that respond directly to visual cues. An image of a shark, in theory, should set the octopus off. Past experiments on cephalopods though have revealed absolutely no reaction. Previous tests were done with standard definition sets, and no matter what image the researches showed, the octopus didn’t seem to care. “It was a case of the technology not being up to the relatively high standard of octopus eyesight,” says Renata Pronk of MacQuarie University in Sydney, Australia.
The most recent test uses high definition sets, showing 1080p video to the target cephalopods, and has been a great success. While the reaction of the octopuses hasn’t been consistent, the fact that they react has been.
Whether it’s the progressive scan technology or the higher resolution, they can’t yet say, but there’s no question that even the humble octopus can tell the difference between standard definition and high definition.

New Moon is one of the worst films I have ever seen. The only thing redeeming about it is that it has one character that is at least somewhat likable.
Jacob actually being a somewhat decent character is why New Moon isn't up there with CINO, A Knight's Tale, and Dragonball: Evolution.

I haven't seen New Moon yet, but figured since I had the first Twilight film on Blu-ray, why not grab the second one for only $9. I had asked a few people about it and they said it was better than the first. lol. I don't know, for $9 I didn't lose much if it is really bad, but I'll find out soon enough.

I actually thought it was much better than the first one. You still have to put up with Stephanie Meyer's awful storytelling, but I thought it was far more watchable than Twilight.
But I saw it on Blockbuster's on-demand feature through my BD player, I'm definitely not interesting in buying the discs.

More Details of Alien Anthology Blu-ray Surface
German site Bluray-disc.de has received an advance review copy of Minority Report (which is distributed in Europe by 20th Century Fox) to find that it opens with a short teaser for the upcoming Blu-ray edition of the Alien Anthology. After the extended tagline "In space no one can hear you scream – but on Blu-ray they can," it is revealed that the Anthology will consist of the movies Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection.
Additionally, according to the print edition of the UK movie magazine Empire, this release is being produced by Charles De Lauzirika, who is behind the BD releases of most of the movies directed by Sir Ridley Scott, including the monumental five-disc Blade Runner. De Lauzirika said that, while the Quadrilogy DVD was already very comprehensive, this Anthology Blu-ray set will blow it out of the water, with new extras and commentaries. Also, a new sound mix has been done for the extended edition of Alien 3, which involved bringing back some of the cast to reloop their dialogue.

I saw NM about 2 weeks ago and the one major thing that turned me off that it had like no plot. This big vampire vs werewolf thing that was promoted barely plays a factor in the film and if you are expecting some big showdown, prepare to be disappointed. Twilight ended on a good cliffhanger with the redheaded vampire vowing revenge on Bella, but she never confronts her or manages to get near her, so this threat never is one.. The triangle was underdeveloped and barely had much presence. The entire movie felt like 2 hours worth of filler. It was nothing more than setup for the next film. I cant see why it did so well and got as much hype and attention as it did bc it trully was a bad movie. Overhyped and not worth the praise

That's nothing - wait until the next film when the vampires & werewolves join forces to fight an army of newborn vampires created by Victoria to invade Forks and
we instead spend the entire battle in a tent miles away where Edward and Jacob are hiding Bella and we get to listen to them argue all night over which one loves her more. Since Edward is psychic we find out what happens during the fighting through his play-by-play that he tells Bella.
Needless to say, the woman can't write an action sequence to save herself.

lol...the premise is good and would lend itself to some great action sequences, but unfortunately thats not where it went. I guess my problem was going into it as a guy with a guys perspective and was hoping for more action oriented stuff balanced with the cheesy romance but it had its specific auridence which it catered to

New Moon is a million times worse than Twilight. Mostly because I cannot stand Bella Swan, not just as a character, but as a person. My hatred for her knows no bounds and if I summed it up to words, the end result would probably end up with myself being demodded and banned due to incredibly harsh language.

I read all the books and had to lie to my boss (who loaned them to me) that I liked them. Bella is the worst character ever written. I'm actually in the middle of a discussion about her awfulness on another message board right now and have no patience for those who try to defend her. She just gets worse from New Moon too. :cmad:
My sister read the books after kinda liking the first movie and hated them so much she was downright offended by them. My best friend literally tossed the book she borrowed from her sister back at her yelling "THIS IS AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP!!" :argh:
So...calming down...swinging back to topic...
How 'bout those blu-rays? :oldrazz:
Just picked up The Princess & The Frog and it looks fantastic. Now I need to go and get the other animated Disney films I haven't picked up on BD yet - Snow White and Pinocchio.
Also thoroughly enjoying watching the original Star Trek TV series on blu-ray. I haven't watched the show in ages, and the new transfers looks amazing.

3D TVs Hitting Walmart This Year
Walmart says they’re working to bring down costs and give customers an affordable 3D experience.
It usually takes a long time for technology to be considered a part of the mainstream, and Walmart sales are the number one indicator of just what is and what isn’t a crucial part of the market. It took the super sized retailer a long time to start stocking anything but a few new release Blu-rays, and just as long to get BD players on shelves.
In a surprise announcement, Walmart revealed that they’ll be stocking 3D televisions for the 2010 holiday season. It’s big news, especially since 3D TVs are still so new. Early adopters are still just getting their hands on these and Walmart is already ready to stock them. “We are going to be instrumental in helping to bring the costs down and bring a more affordable 3-D experience to customers,” said Walmart’s Gary Severson. “We are excited about it.” The success of home 3D entertainment is still a question mark, but this endorsement from Walmart looks like an indicator that 3D may be here to stay.

Disappointing, but if you look at the DVD's, I always felt that Fellowship never looked as great as the latter two films in the series. So, it's kind of expected that this has happened on Blu-ray if they used an old master. I'll still be Netflixing these as I haven't seen them in a while and they should look leaps and bounds better than their DVD counterparts which look horrible on anything over 55".
At least the audio is top notch!

Yep that is actually how it usually goes with Blu-ray. The higher the sequel the better it looks.

Half of Avatar Preorders Are for the Blu-ray
During the recent Avatar press event, James Cameron stated that about 50% of Avatar presales are for the Blu-ray version, a much higher percentage than the 15% usually seen on other titles. The filmmaker said that the public is "definitely excited about the Blu-ray release and pre-selecting for the most premium version in which they can see Avatar in a home environment."
As to how that percentage would ultimately translate to total sales, Cameron couldn't say, at this point. "We'll find out in a month."
James Cameron saw a parallel between this situation and what happened when the movie was released theatrically: while Avatar was being "wildly" pirated, "people were lining up and we were selling out in theaters." He concluded: "I think the wider public has made a decision that they want that premium experience."
Hang 'Em High, Man in the Iron Mask Blu-ray
An early announcement to retailers indicates that MGM will release two catalog titles on May 11: Hang 'Em High, a 1968 western starring Clint Eastwood; and The Man in the Iron Mask, the 1998 retelling of the Alexandre Dumas novel with an all-star cast. As with other recent BD titles from the studio, a DVD copy of the movie will also be included.

It doesn't surprise me. "Avatar" was just one of the reasons for me getting off my ass and upgrading to Blu-ray. I feel like "Avatar" will be for Blu-ray what "The Matrix" was for DVD.

The Dark Knight is to blu-ray as what the Matrix was for DVD.
After the Dark Knight came out on home video, blu-ray became more and more mainstream to where we are now seeing blu-ray as the sole reason why home video sales are up.
A week after hitting store shelves, the Blu-ray release of Warner Brothers 'The Dark Knight' has sold over 1.7 Million units worldwide, shattering all previous Blu-ray sales records. The film, which stars Christian Bale as the caped-crusader, is set to break $1 Billion at the box office, and some execs feared that home video sales would be hurt by such success. Those fears were alleviated after selling through 600,000 Blu-ray units on the first day, and sales of the landmark title have been continuing at a record pace.
The worldwide numbers include retail and rental sales in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Benelux, and Australia. The majority of sales came from US buyers, which bought over 1 Million units of the title. Blu-ray sales represented nearly 13% of all home media sales for the title, which sold 13.5 Million units on home video formats.
In comparison, 'The Matrix' DVD release in 1999 - which is generally recognized as the title to spark sales of the format - sold 780,000 units in one week. The Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight' has more than doubled that accomplishment.
Blu-ray has been recognized as one of the most wanted items this holiday season, and consumers are responding aggressively towards lower player prices and the high definition releases of many film favorites. Interest in the format has exploded as consumers budgets become tighter and they realize they can get the same or better movie watching experience in their home with Blu-ray for a lot less money.
To quote Anna Paquin from her role as Polexia Aphrodisia in the film 'Almost Famous, "It's all happening!"

Meh doubt it considering it looks like studios are choosing to make 3D Blu-ray's only available if you actually buy a 3DTV with it. I am pretty sure the Avatar 3D Blu-ray will be the same way. It might actually end up being Batman 3 which is more than likely being considered as being shot in 3D :oldrazz:

And just for Red (lol), on to a Twilight note. I finally saw New Moon, it wasn't as bad as some of you guys made it out to be...it's definitely not the worst movie ever. :p It was about on par with the first, but better directed and better cinematography. The thing that annoyed me though was that Bella was a total b**** to Jacob and I was hoping for a wolf to kill off Edward. I know, I know, I totally need to give up my man card for watching these movies but they aren't that bad...lol. Anyways, it was alright, had some pretty good CGI for the budget they were working with.

Nice, I may buy when it hits the mid-10 dollar range it since I never got the DVD.
I noticed that Disney was re-releasing their animated version of Alice in Wonderland on DVD to promote the new Burton movie coming out, but only on DVD, and not Blu-ray. Got to say I'm rather disappointed. Not many people seem to like that one of the Disney line-up, but I would gladly rebuy it on Blu.

I loved that movie when I was a kid, one of my favourite Disney films, but I havent seen it in a while. I definately found the Burton movie distinctly average.
On a Disney related note, I just bought Dumbo and Monsters Inc, £18 for the set, which is a pretty decent price over here. I've yet to check them out, although I'm sure MI will be pristine.

Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray Dated
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced Beauty and the Beast for release on Blu-ray on October 5. It will be presented as a Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack (2 Blu-ray Discs and one DVD), and like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 2009, will launch seven weeks ahead of the DVD release.
Disney specifies that the release will feature "state-of-the-art picture restoration," 7.1 audio and "hours of additional viewing experiences," including behind the scenes features, deleted scenes, enhanced music tracks, immersive games and more.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Blu-ray Available Now
The Ang Lee martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is now available to buy separately. Until now, it was only available in the US as part of a three-movie pack, released in July 2009, which also included The Curse of the Golden Flower and House of Flying Daggers. A separate edition had gone up for preorder early this year, but without a definite street date.
Disc details haven't been released at this moment, but in all likelihood it will be the exact same disc from the three-pack.

ok thanks... i was wondering if it would be better for me to get a samsung bdp to match my samsung tv...
It won't matter and you don't really want the Samsung Blu-ray player since all I've heard about them are negative things.

Does anyone know if they are bringing out a Special Edition of The Terminator on BD, I believe the current version isnt very good.

I could have sworn that I read something about a new edition coming out this year but am not 100% sure on that.
Also, for anyone who is a huge U2 fan (like me), they are bringing their most recent concert to Blu-ray...
U2360° At The Rose Bowl will be released on DVD and Blu-ray by Mercury Records on June 7, 2010.
U2360° At The Rose Bowl was the penultimate gig of last year's U2360° Tour in support of their Grammy nominated album No Line on The Horizon. The Rose Bowl performance was the band's biggest show of 2009 and U2's biggest ever US show, with a live audience in excess of 97,000.
The show was also streamed across seven continents via YouTube. The first ever live streaming of a full-length stadium concert, U2360° at the Rose Bowl had over 10 million views on the channel in one week.
Shot entirely in HD, the concert was filmed with 27 cameras and directed by Tom Krueger who had previously worked on U23D, the first live action 3D concert movie taken from U2's Vertigo Tour.
Available in standard and 2-disc deluxe DVD formats (see below), U2360° At The Rose Bowl will also be U2's first concert available in Blu-ray. The deluxe formats and the Blu-ray will feature a new documentary called Squaring the Circle: Creating U2360° with new interviews from U2, Paul McGuinness and the team behind the touring production.
The ground breaking U2360° tour continues this year, with the US leg opening in Salt Lake City on June 3, and the European leg opening in Turin, Italy on August 6.
Tracklisting of U2360° At The Rose Bowl is as follows:
Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Beautiful Day, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of, No Line On The Horizon, Elevation, In A Little While, Unknown Caller, Until the End of the World, The Unforgettable Fire, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight, Sunday Bloody Sunday, MLK, Walk On, One, Where The Streets Have No Name, Ultra Violet (Light My Way), With Or Without You, Moment Of Surrender.
U2360° At The Rose Bowl is released in the following formats:
- Single Disc DVD, live concert only
- 2DVD Super Deluxe Box Set (content to be announced)
- Two Disc DVD Deluxe edition
and
- Blu-Ray Single Disc edition each featuring the live concert plus:

I had owned xmen 1&2 on dvd and then I bought the last stand on blu .
Instead of buying the trilogy I found xmen1 for 10.99 at walmart. I've since been looking for a markdown on X-men 2 which is a must own for me.

There is a new edition being worked on but James Cameron being very busy with Avatar (who has to approve of the new transfer), various rights issues for special features, Lightstorm is working on a restoration of the film with Lowry Digital, and now problems with MGM (which has released very little recently) have delayed progress considerably.

The current price for X-2 is $13.86 at Walmart. Since Walmart's in stock blu-rays aren't very impressive, I would price match it at a local Best Buy if possible. Btw, which of your collection do you think has the most impressive video quality?

Well personally out of the 209 Blu-ray's I own I would have to say that The Dark Knight's IMAX filmed scenes have to be the most breathtaking in terms of visual clarity...it is my go to demo disc. I have a 92 inch screen with a 1080p projector and its just amazing looking.
Anything Pixar is sure to be a demo disc as well.

You've made a jealous man out of me. I have to agree with you about TDK's IMAX scenes, they are nothing less than spectacular. Since I've purchased Toy Story I and II, I've come to the conclusion that the sequel has the best VQ of any of the movies I own (20 lol, just got the capabilities via laptop this year). Watching the opening sequence left me with my jaw on the floor. Great movie, now one of my favorites.
I'm most looking forward to the blu-ray version of The Incredibles as it is bound to look remarkable.

Yep the Toy Story Blu's are getting amazing reviews so I am sure they look spectacular. And you are watching them on a laptop? Well I can say the bigger the screen the more obvious the differences between the DVD and Blu-ray will be more noticeable. I also have a surround sound setup that takes advantage of the lossless audio and it definitely is half of the experience.

The Dark Knight's IMAX scenes are brilliant, unlike Transformers 2. Those IMAX scenes were just really jarring.

Yeah, it'll be forever before I turn my dream surround system into a reality. I am a college student after all. My HDTV (21 inch) can only play Dolby Digital audio so when there's DTS-HD and that sort I have to resort to my laptop. Normally I would simply hook my HDMI cable to the tv.

It would have been better if they didn't keep switching from widescreen to IMAX every two seconds during the IMAX scenes.
